We Got a Party Going On, Many Spirits Strong!

Today is a fine day here at Zappos for many a reason, but mostly, because it is the anniversary of the birth of one of our finest Zapponians, Rob S.!

Rob is a Customer Loyalty Manager and he is one of our veteran employees. Rob is a Colorado native (sort of), a music fanatic and a fine guitar player and singer as well. The man’s nickname is Smilin’ Rob for a good reason: He has not stopped smiling since 1993….seriously, I would not lie to you. It’s kind of the like the Joker situation in the first Tim Burton Batman movie, but minus the menacing overtones….just joking, Robby. ;)

This is a beloved employee here at Zappos and he makes Zappos a great place to come to work everyday. Rob, on the day of your birth, we salute you!

Don’t PANIC!!!

Vegas Encounter Karaoke

Upon entering Ellis Island Casino and Brewery in Las Vegas, Nevada the first thing you will hear is not the plinkity plink of the slot machines, but the crooning coming from a very famous karaoke bar inside. Upon entering we gazed at smoke filled old booths, two not so famous Elvis impersonators, and the biggest song books I’ve ever seen. We ended up at the Ellis Island Casino and Brewery looking for $1 beers from their very own brewery and a chance to sing in front of some serious Ellis locals.

Though they didn’t have the $1 beers anymore, they did have a great list of their own brews to choose from. I brought some of my fellow Vegas Experience peeps here remembering what a great but seedy and old casino this was. Bert H. belted out, “Baby Got Back,” while Kevin (Mike) M. sang, “Pretty Fly for a White Guy, “ by the Offspring. The “Duets,” soundtrack version of “Cruisin,” was sang by me as this is the only song I’ve ever sang karaoke to and I couldn’t believethat they had it. Amber R. sang Sheryl Crow’s version of, “Sweet Child of Mine,” while Pat C. gazed at us from the back booth not wanting to get up and sing but he sure gave his support to us brave fools. If you find yourself sick of the new part of the strip and you’re looking for some old-fashioned karaoke fun, or want to enjoy a famous $6.99 Sirloin Steak special, or some local brew, head down to Ellis Island Casino and Brewery.

Distance Runs: Bangkok

The Bangkok Marathon is one of the most popular distance runs in Asia.

I currently live in Bangkok, Thailand and am also a serious runner . Distance runs (10ks and 5ks) are not as easy to find in Thailand as they are in the US, which is why everyone loves the Standard Chartered Bank Bangkok Marathon so much.

The Bangkok Marathon is held every year in November. In 2008, it will take place on November 23rd. The Bangkok Marathon itself begins at 2 am for those runners who finish in 5-7 hours, as the heat is so intense in Bangkok that many of us fell it’s better to run while it’s still dark. Even at 2 am, the temperatures can easily top 80 degrees and increase exponentially. So, if you decide to run in it, make sure you are hydrated properly. The second marathon start time is at 3:20 am for those runners who can finish in under 5 hours. All races start and finish in front of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaow, which is one of the most spectacular pieces of architecture in the world.

The marathon also has a quarter marathon (10.55k) and a 5k run, which are very popular with Thai residents and foreigners alike. The quarter marathon begins at 6:45 am, with the 5K (also known as the Fun Run) starting thirty minutes later at 7:15am. These runs are also really fun as the course loops around the Bangkok historic district and through several different ethnic communities, and there are beautiful historical Thai buildings and temples to see. Thais are also very interested in the marathon and the fun run and very proud of their country, so the streets will be packed with spectators cheering you on.

The prizes in the Bangkok Marathon are also very nice. In male and female overall categories, the winner will receive an award of 300,000 baht (currently around $9,375). Second to tenth place winners in the male and female categories will also receive cash awards as well as medals and certificates. In the 10.55k and the 5K, any runner that completes the course under a certain period of time will also get a medal and a certificate. The marathon itself is usually dominated by runners from Kenya, but it would be nice to see a Thai win it this year.

You can register for the Standard Chartered Bangkok Marathon online at http://www.bkkmarathon.com . Fees vary from around $5 for Thai residents (includes Westerners who live in Thailand), to $65 for registrations by non-Thai residents. There is no registration allowed on the day of the marathon so, if you want to run in it, make sure you register by the deadline of November 22nd. The Bangkok Marathon really is a fabulous thing to see though so, whether you run it, do the 10K or the 5K or just go out to watch, you’ll still have a really fun time.

Matthew McConaughey's Baby Boy, Ashley Duprey's Reality Show and the Latest Hollywood Break-ups

Matthew McConaughey is finally a dad! Matthew and his girlfriend, Camila Alves, welcomed their beautiful baby boy into the world on Monday night. No word on a name yet, but being a celebrity baby, chances that the name will be something like Trailer Park Surfer are pretty good.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie‘s divorce just keeps getting messier and messier. It seems that Madonna has been having some sort of an affair with none other than famed baseball player, Alex Rodriguez. It’s no surprise that there are rumors that Madonna used Kaballah to persuade A-Rod that the two of them were soul mates and destined to be together. A-Rod is, of course, going through his own messy divorce with his soon-to-be ex-wife, Cynthia Rodriguez. Cynthia hasn’t wasted anytime socking it to Alex by fueling rumors that she and rocker Lenny Kravitz have a thing going on and then flying off to Paris and indulging in extravagant shopping sprees. I’m sure we’ll be hearing about these two couples for some time.

And here’s one that nobody saw coming – Drew Barrymore has split from her boyfriend of one year, the cute Mac Guy, Justin Long. Besides indulging in a lot of PDA around LA, everyone thought that Drew and Justin were actually one of the most down-to-earth couples in Hollywood. They of course, are vowing to stay friends, but we all know how the friend thing goes after you’ve been in a relationship with someone.

Another couple who made a trip to Splitsville USA this past week are supermodel, Kate Moss and her rocker boyfriend Jamie Hince. The Daily Mirror reports that the couple had a major fight over the 4th of July holiday weekend and that Jamie has since moved his belongings out of Kate’s London home. Ouch.

And guess who is in talks to develop her own reality TV show? The infamous high-priced call girl, Ashley Duprey, who was rocketed to fame after it was reported that she was part of the Eliot Spritzer scandal. Rumor has it that the 23-year-old wants her own reality dating show, sort of like Tila Tequila’s MTV show.

Keeping Kids Active: Tetherball!

Keeping kids exercising is often as simple as finding a fun, energetic sport or activity that they enjoy. One sport our family enjoys that I don’t see enough of anymore is tetherball. Remember that game from the schoolyard where you would take turns trying to punch a ball on a string around a pole? That’s tetherball.

To enjoy tetherball, you don’t have to hunt down the nearest gym or school who happens to have access to it. All you need to do is either buy your own or make your own. It’s not as hard as it may sound. The local sporting goods store will generally have an easy-to-set-up, low-cost, low-grade tetherball game, even including the pole. The instructions will come with the set.

If you want a more sturdy tetherball game, try making your own. It’s very simple and depending on the ages and abilities of the kids, they may even be able to help. All you need is a small bag of concrete mix, an old tire with the rim still inside, a cheap tarp, a metal pole, a bolt with a hook, a drill with a metal bit, and a pre-strung tetherball. First, drill a hole the correct size for the bolt into the top of the pole. Next, screw in the bolt. Mix the concrete thickly. Set the tire on top of the tarp.

Now place the mixed concrete inside of the tire. Fill the entire hole. Place the pole in the center of the mixed concrete inside the tire. Smooth out the concrete. The pole should stand straight up and if the concrete is thick enough, it will not move. Allow it to dry completely. There’s your tetherball pole. Now, just hang your tetherball and you and the kids can start to play.

Tetherball rules are very simple. Player one is the server. To serve the ball, much like volleyball, set it atop the non-dominant hand and punch it with the other. The goal is to get the tetherball to wrap completely around the pole without interruption from the other player. Each player must take turns hitting the ball in opposite directions until one player wraps it around the pole.

Whomever wraps it around the pole first is the winner. Players may not grab the string or hold onto the ball. Either is an automatic “out”. If this occurs, the next player will come in and a new game will begin. Players may only punch or hit the ball.

Best Hiking: The Beauty of Maine

No one should die without seeing the coast of Maine from Acadia National Parks. This is one hike that I highly recommend.

August 15: We woke to rain after sleeping like babies. Once the sun was out, we headed to a hike that we had planned called Huegenot Head and Champlain Mountain in Acadia National Park, Maine.

The hike was 3.3 miles and supposedly would take two and a half hours. I’m not sure who’s counting the minutes or how old the person is, but we like to stop and smell the flowers and did the hike in 3.5 hours. We found one area strenuous and much of it challenging, but the hike was gorgeous and worth the challenge. This hike begins at the Tarn parking area. We found the granite staircase. We love this kind of trail in spite of the physical work it requires. We started out with about 1,400 steps. Sure the steps were well defined and we had forest next to us eliminating the fear of falling off of them, but still, that’s a lot of steps when you’re going up a mountain and gaining 1,100 feet in elevation.

After the 1,400 steps, we hit some switchbacks. This is the kind of hike I call “rock climbing.” I’m 5 feet 4 inches and with rocks like that, I’m pulling myself up to get on them and onto the next one. When we weren’t “rock climbing” the trail was almost straight up. There’s an elevation gain of 1,100 feet.

The summit was incredible and a perfect place for a picnic. We were looking at Frenchman’s Bay but didn’t see any seals or other critters. We had company but it was alright becase we all shared our stories of how we got up. We could have come to this summit any of four ways including using a ladder. At that time I had never done ladders so chose the rocky way. I had also been told that one way up the trail was so steep that I would be on my hands and knees clinging to the side of the mountain and trying not to look down to lots of air. Many of us wondered where the Starbucks was and when the helicopter would be coming to take us down!

We found out that we had our hike to ourselves for the most part because of the four ways up. The Precipice Trail, which is how some came up, is said to be the most difficult on this side of the island. The trail we went up is Tarn. We decided to go down Bear Brook Trail, which felt like an easy descent after the climb up. One negative about Bear Brook Trail is that we ended up on Route 3 and then had about a mile walk to our car. I would have preferred hiking to our car.

Kiva 411

Okay, so KIVA has been up and running for a while now and despite a few bumps along the way, everything is running great. Those little critters are working their circuits to the bone. Last time I talked about some employee’s views on KIVA itself and how they liked working with the new system. I heard from a few people how they would like to know how the process works and how it’s different from regular putaway or picking. So this is for all those eager young minds yearning for information.

Unlike site manager, which is ran throughout the rest of the warehouse, you don’t have to make a new password and type in your login every time. Instead all you have to do is scan your badge with the hand scanner that you use for putaway, or type in your name to get logged in. Easy enough. After the login screen, you are directed to a job option screen. On this screen you choose either putaway or picking/purging. Purging is a tool under picking that helps with picking multiple orders.

Once you choose which job you will be performing, you will be prompted to choose which pods you want to use. There are pods for small and large handbags, shoes, apparel, etc. Once you make your decision, the bots will automatically go and retrieve the appropriate shelving units. Once they bring them, all you have to do is put the items away. The only difference between putting away in KIVA and putting away in the static racks is in KIVA you have to scan the location and then scan the items, while in the static racks you have to scan the item first.

Now that you know the process I bet you can’t wait to jump in there and start working, right? Well of course you are. They’re just too neat not to want to work with the bots.
