Fitness Options for Kids: Extreme Racing!

Who says a race is simply running from start to finish? Not this mom. I like to mix it up a bit. Sometimes I even turn it into an extreme sport for kids , increasing their physical benefit from the fun exercise. To do that, I simply add something extra to the race. Since kids are like animals, that is one of the themes I use often. I also have been known to throw in plenty of other fun things to make the race extreme.

Most kids seem to have a natural love for racing. The reason likely varies from kid to kid. For some it could be the thrill of the competition. Yet, to others, it may be the adrenaline rush or the force of the movement. When choosing extracurricular physical activities for my kids, racing is an activity that gets chosen often. It doesn’t have to be the same every time either. In fact, racing is very versatile, especially in what I call extreme racing for kids.

Let’s Get Hopping!

In this extreme race option, kids must hop just like a kangaroo all the way to the finish line. Kids caught not hopping are eliminated until the next round. The jumping motion helps to increase the heart rate and also exercises those limbs. So, get those kids hopping to the finish line.

Climb The Ladder

To have kids do this extreme race, I have them move their hands and feet up and down from start to finish, resembling climbing a ladder. This must be done quickly to cause a running motion. Kids like this one because it looks pretty silly.

Zig Zag Zip

In Zig Zag Zip, the kids will jump from side to side in a zig zag motion toward the finish line. This extreme race can get pretty fun. Sometimes the kids cross paths by accident. There is also a lot of laughter!

Just go!

This extreme race option allows the kids to each pick their own method of extreme racing. It’s interesting to see what the kids come up with. Sometimes they pick from things we’ve done before. Other times, they get very creative.

Best Hiking Trails: Diamond Head

Diamond Head State Monument is located on the island of Oahu in beautiful Hawaii. This is a must-do hike . It can be seen just about anywhere on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. (Unless you’re diving!)

When we arrived we were told by a person in a kiosk (there was no Visitor Center) to be back by 6 p.m. because the gate to the parking lot closes then and if we missed it, we’d be sleeping there. In fact, the gate didn’t close at exactly 6 p.m and, if we had wanted to spend more time, we could have found parking outside the gate.

The trail was well maintained and, for the most part, pretty easy. There were handrails all the way up the 1.4 mile round-trip hike. This was a short hike, but really nice. We encountered some lava we had to climb up, but I’d call this hike great for the whole family. Although easy, it’s a steep 760-foot crater, so I found wearing hiking boots to be a good idea. We also always carry binoculars and this was a great place to have them, along with the necessary sunscreen and a cap. There was no shade so having lots of water helped also.

Once we got to the top we had a gorgeous view. It felt as if we were on top of the world. It was one of the most impressive views I’ve ever seen. Along with the beautiful blue water, we saw hotels and a lighthouse.

We headed down at about 5 p.m. and it was still quite warm. Be forewarned: there was no water or bathrooms on the trail or at the top of Diamond Head.

We spent about two hours doing this hike. Even at that time of the day there were plenty of people. There weren’t enough for me to call the observation posts crowded, but close to it. If I were to go again, I’d go early in the morning when it wouldn’t be as crowded or hot.

Best Vacation Spots for Skaters: Atlanta!

Learn about skateparks, shops and events in and around Atlanta, Georgia.

Skateboarding is spreading around the globe. However, some major cities are taking a little longer to catch up with this trend then others. Atlanta, Georgia is one major city that is starting to build a better repertoire of skateparks, skateboarding events and skateboard shops. If you are visiting this city and are a skateboarder, then you will be glad to learn that there are some great events to participate in, and some fun skateparks to visit in the surrounding communities.

Atlanta Area Skateparks

While there are several Atlanta city skateparks currently being developed, right now your best option for finding one is to search the surrounding communities. The first park that you can visit is the Front Side Skatepark. It is located at 850 Jamerson Road in Marietta, Georgia 30066. If you will be staying near Kennesaw, Georgia then you can stop by the NorthWest YMCA Skate Park, which can be found at 1700 Dennis Kemp Lane, Kennesaw, Georgia 30152.

Atlanta Skate Shops and Events

This contest runs in February and March, and skaters of all ages can win prizes and free skating rights for a full year. Other Atlanta skateboarding events include the SK8 or Die skateboarding art event in May and the Go Skateboarding Day in June.

While visiting the city and surrounding areas, don’t forget to get a little shopping in. Best Distance Runs: Manhattan Beach

The Manhattan Beach 10K Run is a nice, hometown race in Southern California that’s well worth participating in.

If you’re the planning-ahead type when it comes to races , you might want to start thinking about the Manhattan Beach 10K Run. This year, the Manhattan Beach 10K will be held on October 4, 2008 and will start at 7:30 a.m. When I lived in Los Angeles, I used to run the race every year and would recommend it for any serious runner who also likes to give back to the community.

The Manhattan Beach 10K is a partnership between the race committee and the city of Manhattan Beach and the race committee donates all the race proceeds to the Manhattan Beach community (something I always loved). They fund scholarships to high school seniors, new equipment for area high schools and also provide improvements to area parks.

Another thing I really like about this race is the way they time the runners. Every runner has to have a timing chip tied to their shoe, which is activated by stepping on a mat when they begin the race. The time will then be stopped when the runner passes over a similar mat when they finish the race. The timing is incredibly accurate, but you have to make sure you wear the chip. If you don’t, your time will not be counted and your name won’t be included in the official results.

The cost for the Manhattan Beach 10K Run last year was $25 for early registers and $30 for late registers. Runners under 15 years old can register for $15 and $20 for late registration. The registration fee for 2008 hasn’t been announced yet, but it will probably be around the same price.

The race is really fun, very laidback, with friendly volunteers and nice runners. Split times are called at each mile, and there is even on-course entertainment.

Also don’t forget to check out the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair after you’ve finished the race. It’s not connected to the run, but it’s a fun event with interesting booths, entertainment, arts and crafts, food and even a display of antique cars. After finishing the run, it’s a nice place to hang out. The fair also operates the shuttles for the runners and they’re nice folk too.

For more information, contact the race organizers at 310-374-2397. If you’re in or near Manhattan Beach, you can also register for the race at the Village Runner store on Sepulveda Boulevard.

Heidi Montag Goes Christian, Britney Gets Overnight Visits and More Gossip Girls Gossip.

In an interview with US Weekly, Heidi Montag announced that what she most wants in life is to record a Christian music album. There are so many things wrong with the sentence that I don’t even know where to start.

First, why does US Weekly keep interviewing Heidi Montag? She and boyfriend, Spencer Pratt, must have some dirt on somebody there, because they keep interviewing her and even putting her on the cover, even though the two have no talent between them and everybody hates them.

Secondly, why does Heidi insist on pursuing a music career when her last attempt at recording a CD was a miserable failure? Now, maybe she’s thinking she’ll take a cue from Jessica Simpson and try switching music genres to gain a little momentum. But she forgets that you actually have to have some musical talent to start with! And she’s even claiming that she and Spencer want to travel to Africa to feed children and build “things.” What kind of things, Heidi?

You know that she doesn’t have a clue and she’s hoping that by mentioning the bible in every interview, it will count for something with the Christian music crowd. Never mind the fact that she’s considered one of MTV’s worst villains and that she’s been filmed lying, cheating, backstabbing, living and sleeping with her boyfriend and is incredibly shallow and self-centered. Yeah, that’ll go over real well when she’s trying to break into Christian music.

In other blonde news, Britney Spears was finally granted overnight visits with her boys, Sean Preston and Jayden James. You’ve got to hand it to Britney, she’s really making an effort to straighten her life out. It seems like things have only gotten better since she kicked her good-for-nothing friend/manager, Sam Lufti, out of her life and her dad stepped in to oversee her career and finances.

And there is a lot of gossip going on about the cast of Gossip Girls, but it’s not the girls that people are interested in. Instead, people are wondering if Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick are more than “just friends.” Chace has been linked with American Idol-winner Carrie Underwood and, most recently, to JC Chasez. We’ll see how this story develops.

Zappos on Nightline!

After my local news telecast last night, thine eyes landed on quite a story that the fine folks over at ABC News’ Nightline were airing: A story about Zappos!

Nightline camera crews were in our offices for two days at the end of June, filming our training classes in NV and our KY Boot Camp in Kentucky. They focused on our culture, customer service and our ten core values and how we apply them to our business. Our CEO, Tony Hsieh, was interviewed and explained why we want to treat our customers like royalty (Which You Are!) and how we have made that our number one goal.

If you follow the link below, you can see the story on the Nightline’s Website.

We thank Nightline’s crew for being so great to us while visiting, and thanks to everyone for watching!

THE DAILY TREND - PAINTERLY PERFECTION

Abstract brush strokes in every incarnation were all over the Spring/Summer 2008 runways. Think strokes that imbued the clothing with Rothko, Pollack and Monet. The look is eye-catching and begs for statement jewelry pieces that complement the outfit but do not compete with it. One of my favorites is this M by M Kalan abstract brush-inspired Crepe de Chine black and white dress . Pair it with a large silver cuff and an oversized pearl and silver ring and ta da, perfection!

Crazy Day, Turned Super Hero Day!

Working at Zappos allows us use our creative geniuses and most of all, our inner children get plenty of exercise!! The entire warehouse in Kentucky celebrated our Zappos spirit throughout the week, allowing us to wear plaid and blue from head to toe, pj’s, shave mohawks and other fun activities. Friday’s designated theme was ‘Crazy Day’. So going with the new warehouse theme of ‘Superheroes’, I thought it would be a fun idea to dress up like superheros instead! Our entire department came together on this, even going the extra step and using ‘gods and goddesses’ names to help us uniquely choose our characters.

From left to right:
Ashley P. (photographer) chose Aphrodite as her superhero goddess. True to form, her ‘inner flower child’ made Aphrodite into a play on words using instead AFRO-dite!! She wore a toga made out of curtains, a giant afro wig, and allowed us to paint funkadelic grape vines all over her face and collar bone! Ashley’s said her reasoning behind Afrodite is to be the “the goddess of all things funky.”

Angela T. (senior photographer) dressed as a super version of Persephone, goddess of transformation and Queen of the underworld. She is a child of the earth, living a double life with her mother on earth, and her dark husband in the underworld causing the worlds seasons to change from summer to winter and back. “This is my life!” Angela thought, when choosing what goddess to represent her!

Abby B. (photographer) chose to dress as the four-armed Hindu goddess, Kali, who is the goddess of time and change, often associated with death and destruction. She is also revered as the redeemer of the universe, as well as thought to be a benevolent mother-goddess. Abby chose this eastern deity because of the complexity of Kali’s personality – with time and change we come to face many obstacles.

Taurie M. (photographer) was dressed spunky and tom-boy-ish as her chosen goddess Artimus. She is the Greek goddess of courage, known for being athletic, adventurous and a free spirit that can not be tamed!

Carol D. (senior assistant) dressed as the goddess Isis. When asked why she chose this goddess, she said “Because Isis controls all magic, and she’s Egyptian, which is interesting to me.”

Carla B. (assistant) chose a siren goddess, Lorelei who lived in the ocean and sang sailors to their deaths with her beautiful voice. Her costume was based on water and many shades of blue to reflect the ocean.

Theresa S. (photographer) had a goddess made up of her own, a name that started out as “Princess Couture” was changed to simply “Coutura” by her fellow team members, and will now forever be known as “the goddess all things high fashion”.

Jenny H. (assistant) chose to be the goddess Bastet. With a cat head and a human body she is the cat goddess and also a deity over childbirth and motherhood. This was an obvious choice for Jenny because she spends tons of time with her nephews, and her love of cats!

Angela S. (product info) is representing Mania, the goddess of insanity in Greek mythology and goddess of the dead in Roman mythology. The outfit, and random feathers in her hair are supposed to represent both of these mythological goddesses.

I hope that we can always celebrate our weirdness and express ourselves as individuals at this amazing company!!
