It's a putty world...

Even though Zappos never sleeps the photo department does slow down. Photographers and their assistants can stay busy updating the older pictures on the site, but the people who enter in the product information occasionally have to seek out something to do.

Late one night, after moving from one photographer to another completing all work possible, Angela (our PI girl) was bored. While talking to an assistant, Matt, she picked up some yellow putty the photographers use to prop up shoes and began making a three dimensional triangle.

By the time she was done it was a crazy cat lady with 6 kittens!! I snapped a few photos of it and posted it on the background of my computer.

Her creativity with a tool photographers use all day made everyone happy. People began throwing out suggestions to see what she could come up with next. Her creations went anywhere from a Koi pond, snoopy & woodstock, a derby horse & jockey, a clothespin and even a drunk guy on a beach!!

One of my favorites is a sculpture of a photographer. It was about four inches tall looking into an Orbiculight with a camera on a tripod, photographing a shoe. I couldn’t help but think of the irony of me, a photographer, taking a photo of a photographer made out of putty, photographing the same way as if I was taking a photo of a shoe.

What will they think of next?!! If anyone out there has suggestions, send them to us and we might be able to make it happen for you!!

Celebrity Trends-Chop Off That Hair: Extensions Are Always An Option

Quite a few celebrities are cutting off their locks and opting for a new shorter hairstyle. With the hot months of summer ahead, cutting your hair now is not a bad idea. There are plenty of different short styles so you can pick the one that would look the best on you. There are angled bobs, layered bobs and pixie cuts just for example. If you do choose to cut your hair like a celebrity, remember that short hair needs to be trimmed more often to retain its style and cut.

Gwyneth Paltrow is probably the best example of a celebrity cutting their hair into a shorter style. Gwyneth cut off approximately 10 inches of her hair, so now it lands right above her shoulders. She went from really long straight hair to a short style with long layers. She has been seen wearing her hair wavy and straight.

Anne Hathaway is another celebrity who just cut off your locks. She went from long hair, down several inches past her shoulders, to a cut above her shoulders. She also has been seen wearing her new shorter do both curly and straight. Her hair is naturally curly, so layers were cut into her hair to make it more manageable. If you have naturally curly hair and want a short hair cut, I would recommend taking a peak at Anne’s hair before heading to the salon.

Several other celebrities are rocking the short hairdos also. Katie Holmes cut her hair into a short bob a while back and recently cut it even shorter. I think that she looks more grown up with her new style and definitely does not look like Joey Potter from Dawson’s Creek anymore.

Michelle Williams also has been sporting a short pixie cut for a while too. Her short blonde locks are an extreme for most people, but it does suit her well. Other stars who are sporting the short cuts include Tori Spelling, Sophia Bush, Kerry Washington, Rihanna and Christina Ricci.

So I say, go ahead and take the plunge. Follow the trend and cut your hair. There are always extensions. Isn’t that what stars do anyway?

History of a Shoe: Penny Loafers

The penny loafer originated in the 1930s when loafers of several varieties were fashionable as men’s and women’s shoes. Somewhat unbelievably, this fashion started with the Spaulding company when they produced shoes styled after those of Norwegian dairy farmers that had appeared in an article in Esquire Magazine. However, it wasn’t until a few years later that the penny entered the equation.

In trying to add his own unique stamp to the popular loafer, John Bass began producing loafers he called Weejuns that had a strap across the top of the shoe for style purposes, as a loafer is traditionally defined by having no buckles or laces. This strap had a split design that was supposed to look like a pair of lips. This opening in the strap was soon used as a way to add a decorative touch to the usually simple loafer and small objects, such as pennies, were often placed there. A stylistic embellishment that had once been peculiar to Bass’s shoes became synonymous with an entire fashion.

When pay-phones were still ubiquitous and hadn’t yet been raised to a quarter, the penny loafer was often the source of funds for an emergency phone call home, especially for school-age children or teens on dates.

Penny loafers have been unique since their inception in that they have moved between both form and casual fashion and men’s and women’s fashion. Acceptable for both genders and viable with everything from a suit to jeans and even shorts, penny loafers have long made a smooth transition from work to play. The unique style of the vamp of the shoe that gives them their name has even been transplanted onto a high-heeled (and therefor non-loafer) version for women.

For men, the penny loafer has generally been worn without socks since the 1960s. This style was particularly popular then, and in the 1980s, where the penny loafer with a suit but no socks was emblematic of preppy fashion. It was seen commonly on style-leading celebrites of the time, such as Don Johnson of Miami Vice.

Women more commonly have worn their loafer with socks or stockings, but as bare legs, even with skirts, have become more acceptable for women, their loafers have also become fashionable as a sock-free shoe, at least in casual circumstances.

Despite its presence in many fads, the penny loafer is a simple, classic and understated shoe with practical, long-term fashion value.

Survival Gear: Backpacking

If a backpacking adventure is calling your name this season, picking out some essential equipment can help you trek along safely and comfortably. You’ll need ultralight backpacking and hiking gear to get you through those tougher trails and challenging courses; from shoes to sleeping bags, make sure you have all the basics covered with this equipment checklist:

1. Sleeping bag

If you’re heading out on an overnight course or extended trip, make sure your sleeping bag is well-prepared for harsh climates and inclement weather.

2. Fleece jacket.

No matter how hot the temperatures are during the day, the nighttime climate can drop dramatically and leave you shivering yourself to sleep without the right gear. Pick up a lightweight fleece blanket, gloves or jacket to keep you warm and toasty.

3. Cooking pot.

This will probably be the heaviest piece of equipment in your stash of supplies, so look for something lightweight, efficient and convenient. You’ll also need some utensils, a lighter and a water filter so you can cook up a nourishing meal after a hard day of hiking.

4. Hiking boots.

All-purpose hiking boots are your best bet for a backpacking trip, especially if you’re trekking across different types of terrain. Avoid investing in a super-heavy pair loaded with extra ‘features’ you don’t really need. Lightweight, waterproof and comfortable ankle boots are the ideal match for a backpacking adventure.

5. Swimming shorts or a swimsuit.

When you’re taking a break from backpacking and hiking, don’t forget to take a dip in the lake or swim around the waterfall pool! Tuck a swimsuit into your backpack for some rest and relaxation during your adventure.

6. Poncho.

You never know when that downpour is going to hit, so pack a poncho to keep you dry during a rainy spell. Ponchos are lightweight and easy to fold up and pack away in the small compartments of your backpack.

Running Tips: Take the Day Off

One thing that’s very important for runners but that is often forgotten about is rest.

Many runners run seven days a week and run hard seven days a week. The human body, though, is set up to need rest, and a schedule of hard running every day will soon wear it down.

When I began running, I would hit it hard every single day until I met a trainer at my local gym who gave me some sound advice. He told me never to do anything seven days a week. In fact, the ideal is to train hard one day followed by a less-hard day (alternate one day on and one day less on) and always take one day off every week. Keep doing this and your body never has time to get bored.

So, if this is the case, why do so many runners train too much? The phrase “work hard, play hard” has become synonymous with success, and people tend to carry it over to every element of their life, including their workout routine.A body that is pushed to its limit all the time will soon rebel. Boredom will set in, injuries will happen and soon you won’t be running at all due to injuries.

The ideal schedule for a runner is to train hard three days a week. Push yourself to your limit. Then, on three other days, continue to train at a slower pace than on your hard days. Then relax one day a week. Go to the movies or to the beach, have dinner with your friends, be a couch potato. Literally do anything….. but go running. One thing I do on none-running days is get a massage. This relaxes me, works out the kinks in my body and sets me on course for another three days of hard training.

Whatever you do though, make your off-days fun and your on-days work. After a few weeks of this regimen, you’ll find you enjoy running more, you’ll get more out of your hard workouts but your body won’t be wiped out all the time.

How Did We End Up With High Heels?

Every now and again, when I want to feel sexy, I’ll put on a pair of high heels , shunning my flats and heading out in true style. Shoes with high heels have been around since the 1400s (for the mundane task of keeping one’s feet out of the mud), but it wasn’t until Catherine de Medici came from the Italian peninsula to France in 1533 that high heels became a fashion statement.

At first, only the wealthy and the powerful wore them. But as raw materials became more affordable and consumer spending became possible for more and more people, high heels became more popular. Assembly line and mass production techniques that make use of machines mean that just about anyone can buy and wear high heels. There are even high heels designed especially for men who cross-dress or are making gender switches.

It is possible to fabricate high heels out of nearly any material: leather, wood, fabric, plastic, cement and glue, nails, metal and even paper. High heels are designed by independent fashion designers, or created by designers hired by the manufacturer. Most begin as a prototype that can be referred to throughout the process. Embellishments can be added after the basic construction is finished.

Mass-produced high heels are made using computerized assembly lines. This makes it fast and easy to create high heels. Metal dies are used to cut the pieces out of leather or some other material, into the proper sizes. Sometimes, in the more high-tech factories, a laser beam is used to cut the materials. The next machine uses thermal cement to hold the material over a sort-of mold called a last on a temporary basis. This is done while the sole, upper and heel are created and shaped. Finally, another machine puts the shoe together. The final steps are labels and embellishments. Then another machine wraps the high heels in tissue paper and puts them in a box.

It is interesting to note that these days, most of the heels themselves are actually made from plastic. This is one of the essential ingredients to a cheap shoe that is widely affordable.

Healthy Recipes for the Fam: Mexican Food Night!

Many years ago, encouraging kids to try ethnic dishes was a lot more difficult then today, where most children seem to be more adventurous than adults. In fact, they’re willing to try a large variety of ethnic foods, but one of their favorites is Mexican food. This has led many families to have a weekly taco night. While tacos may be fun, and can certainly be prepared in a healthy way, why not do something different? Instead of taco night, why not have Mexican night and try something new each week?

Beefy Bean Taquitos

  • 1 packet of low-sodium taco seasoning mix
