Z Big Ball is Hyped: Zappos KY is Recycling!

Z Big Ball at the Zappos KY Fulfillment Center is uber-ecstatic, and a little lonely. Lately, Zappos Team Members have been neglecting him to focus on another cool project: Recycling Aluminum Cans! ;\

Do you ever wonder to yourself at night: How many pounds of aluminum cans do Zappos Team Members at the Kentucky Fulfillment Center go through every two weeks? Well, Z Big Ball does ]:) . Any guess? Well, Z answer is: 344 pounds (at a minimum). How much is that worth? $309.60.

Holy Cow! Who knew! Here in Kentucky, they recently decided to start doing something with all of the free soft drinks they consume. They are going to recycle them and give the proceeds back to the community. Though, old habits are hard to kick. The 344 lbs. we collected over the first two weeks of the program doesn’t even come close to what can potentially be collected. Z Big Ball has noticed Many Late-Adopters just tossing their cans in the garbage. But hey, Z Big Ball is working on changing that. More recycling containers and ball full of hype are on the way.

Next week, the KY team is hoping to cement a partnership with a local organization. Zappos Team Members will collect the cans, and our partner organization will cash them in to invest in programs for local youth. We are super excited. :^0

Props go to Jerry down in the KY Photo Department. His tenacity was the spark that got the ball rolling (no pun intended). Thanks for being Passionate and Determined.

Recycle on, Zappos; Recycle on.

Comfort Shoes to the Rescue

While they can’t necessarily work miracles, comfort shoes provide the wearer with benefits such as additional padding, observation of pressure points, wider soles and better support that improve the walking experience.

When you have a medical condition that makes walking uncomfortable, comfort shoes come to the rescue with special construction that can help make walking easy again. While they can’t necessarily work miracles, they do provide the wearer with benefits such as additional padding, observation of pressure points, wider soles and better support that improve the walking experience.

Sometimes referred to as “orthopedic,” comfort shoes are produced by a wide variety of manufacturers, such as Dr. Scholl’s , Comfort One and even New Balance. In some cases, they are geared toward specific conditions that consumers might be dealing with, such as diabetes, while in some, they are designed for the average consumer who might need some extra protection against the rigors of walking.

For example, Arcopedico is one of the most popular manufacturers of comfort shoes, and they provide options in a wide variety of styles, colors and widths. Their most notable feature is the polyurethane outsole, which helps absorb the impact of every footfall while providing additional traction to avoid slipping and falling. Other companies use similar materials for shock absorption and traction.

You’ll also find that comfort shoes provide more room for the wearer, making it easier to stave off injuries to the foot, such as calluses, Dansko , for example, produces occupational comfort shoes that have Thermoplastic toe boxes that simultaneously provide the toes with more room and provide reinforcement for the shoe itself. Dansko also uses PVC for the inner frame, which protects the entire foot without sacrificing flexibility.

Dr. Scholl’s also provides innovative designs in comfort shoes, such as their Women’s Client mary janes, which have cushy memory foam insoles for shock absorption as well as suede leather uppers for maximum flexibility while walking.

Soft materials such as gel, memory foam and leather are the cornerstones of comfort shoes, as they allow the foot to move freely regardless of the speed or gait at which the wearer walks. In many cases, these materials are combined with reinforcements, such as the PVC in the Dansko shoes, providing support for the moments when you need it most. Some are also made with different variations of canvas, which is both breathable and durable.

Additionally, most comfort shoes are built upon a foundation of extreme traction because consumers who buy these types of shoes are more prone to slip-and-fall accidents. Rubber tread is the most frequently used material for this type of feature, and can vary depending on the amount of slip resistance required for the shoe. Cross-hatched tread is generally the most effective, and is common with tennis shoes, walking shoes and sometimes even sandals.

And finally, clogs are the latest style in comfort shoes, and are preferable to many closed-toe versions because of their breathability. In years past, comfort shoes were often considered ugly and were easily identifiable, but now manufacturers are focusing on style as much as function. Clogs often have adjustable heels that allow for swelling and other changes to the foot during the day, and are sometimes just as comfortable as your standard walking shoe.

Big Game Hunting: The Beasts of Newfoundland

When hunting season rolls around, think about heading up North for the challenges of Newfoundland. These days, it can be difficult to find those unspoiled places to hunt where everything comes down to an honest confrontation between you and your prey.

Newfoundland, Canada is, however, one of those rare hunting destinations where you truly have to rely on your skills as a hunter to come home with a trophy. With the black powder and rifle season beginning in mid-September, Newfoundland offers some of the best big game hunting opportunities in the world; bow hunters get to start two weeks earlier. Because Newfoundland has a temperamental and changeable climate during hunting season, it’s hard to tell exactly what kind of challenges the weather will throw at you. Make sure to pack for cold, wet weather as well as unseasonably warm temperatures. As for the wildlife, Newfoundland definitely puts the “big” in the term big game:

Black Bear

Bears typically are formidable prey, but the North American Black Bear, which has tipped the scale at close to 500 pounds, is an especially challenging target. Newfoundland offers both baited and non-baited Black Bear hunting.

Bull Moose

With large antlers and a weight of approximately 1,500 pounds, a mature Bull Moose is quite a trophy and can be brought down with a bow, muzzleloader or rifle.

Caribou

To stalk these 500 pound beauties, you also can use bows, muzzleloaders and rifles and hopefully come home with an impressive trophy.

On the average, a hunter in Newfoundland has approximately a 70-75% chance of bringing down their prey, with some regions offering a better shot than others. For something a little bit different, also try hunting the Willow Ptarmigan, a local bird that can be found in abundant quantities during the big game hunting season.

Among hunters in Newfoundland, the concept of “fair chase” hunting is fairly widespread; it is perhaps the most honest and honorable way to spot and stalk prey in the wilderness. Instead of using high tech gadgets to get off a shot from a long distance, fair chase means relying on your own skill to move in closer for the kill.

Hunting lodges are quite plentiful in Newfoundland, with all-inclusive packages that offer “fly-in” hunts, accommodations, meals, guides and preparation of meat and trophies. Depending on what kind of game you have your heart set on, packages range in price between $2,000 and $5,000. Lodgings tend to be clean, comfortable and contain everything you need for a great hunting getaway.

One of the best ways to reach Newfoundland is by plane and the recommended carrier is Air Canada. Since you will be traveling outside the United States, a current passport is needed to enter Canada. You can bring your weapons into the country as long as you declare them to the proper authorities at Canadian Customs.

With some of the biggest game available in North America combined with an unspoiled wilderness, Newfoundland could easily become your new favorite hunting spot.

Pursue Growth and Learning (And a Master's Degree!)

One of our very own Content Team members recently achieved something pretty spectacular. The amazing Angela Chege received her Master’s degree from the University of Southern Nevada, and we couldn’t be more proud of her great accomplishment. Now, one of the first things I thought was, how in the world does someone as hard-working as Angela, manage to find enough time to do such a stellar job at Zappos AND go to classes, and crank out thesis papers? I know many of us often feel like there are just not enough hours in a day to get everything in…so, with this in mind, I just had to have a little Q&A with Miss C. herself:

H: So Angela, rumor has it that you recently earned your Master’s Degree! That’s quite an accomplishment! What did you get your Master’s in?

A: Who is spreading those rumors? Is it because I have a large head? Yes, I received my Masters in Business Administration.

H: Wow…Congratulations! It’s so cool to have an MBA among us! Was it hard to balance working here at Zappos +and going to school? How did you manage your time and what tips can you give to those of us who never can seem to squeeze enough hours out of the day?

A: Thanks. The funny thing is working at Zappos actually brought some relief from my hectic school schedule. Advice?? Anything is possible, so just believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything. I mean, just look at Zappos. Set your mind to do what it is that you want to do, keep your mouth shut, and keep it simple. More importantly, I could not have done anything without the support of my family, friends and Zappos co-workers. So many people have made sacrifices, altered their schedules, etc. to accommodate me, and this degree belongs to them too.Smart-sounding people always use quotes, so let me think of one…..

“You become effective by being selective. It’s human nature to get distracted by minor issues.”

- Rick Warren

Ahh, yes…that’s very sound advice from our resident MBA, always end with a good quote! This one is definitely a good one to live by especially in such a fast-paced, hectic world.

Thanks Angela! I believe this calls for a….Happy Hour celebration??, Yes? =)

The Patten....the Boot...Not the General

Look out your window. What is the weather like today? Is it rainy, snowy or sunny? In today’s world it really doesn’t matter what the weather is like because the roads are paved, there are sidewalks and most of the destinations we need to get to are climate controlled. However, during the Middle Ages things weren’t so accommodating. In fact, a rainy day could turn the roads into a quagmire where you could easily lose your footwear, a tire or worse. Because the rustic condition of many roadways and walkways, people in the Middle Ages wore Pattens. Pattens were slip on clogs that protected the wearer from muddy paths and were the precursors to galoshes.

Pattens and the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages shoe fashion was somewhat unreasonable for the road conditions of the day. One of the most popular shoes on the market during this era was a thin soled pointy toed shoe that was impractical for walking outdoors. To protect these fashionable shoes Pattens were worn over them. Pattens elevated the wearer so that they could keep their feet out of the mud.

Pattens came in three basic designs. The first design used a flat wooden sole that elevated the person above the mud. This design often included a hinge to make flexing the foot easier to do while wearing this type of Patten. The second design used an iron or wooden wedge as the sole of the Patten. This wedge also elevated the wearer’s feet above the mud. The third Patten design utilized many leather laminates to create a flat soled platform.

The Patten was a very useful tool during the Middle Ages, and its popularity kept it in fashion well into the 15th and 16thcenturies. However, in later years Pattens made from willow, alder and poplar were replaced by leather Pattens.

17th Century Pattens

The design of the Patten evolved steadily over the years, and by the 17th century the flat soled and wedged shaped Pattens were replaced by circular hoop designs. These Pattens included a wooden platform that strapped on to a person’s foot, a metal plate that was nailed to the wooden platform, a metal circle that sat on the ground and two metal bars that connected the metal plate to the metal circle.

During the 17th century many advancements were made including thicker soled boots for men and better street construction. These advancements meant that men generally did not need to wear Pattens any more, however, lower class men still wore them. From the 17th century on, Pattens were marketed almost exclusively to women.

The Extinction of the Patten

Like any type of footwear, Pattens were eventually phased out of existence. Paved roadways made Pattens obsolete, as did advancements in men’s and women’s foot fashion. For example, in men’s footwear, Pattens were replaced by thicker soled boots during the early part of the 17th century. Women’s footwear evolved somewhat slower, however, by the end of the 17th century women had the option of wearing galoshes instead of Pattens.

Today there are dozens of footwear choices that will keep your feet dry and warm. There are work boots , galoshes, Uggs , moon boots, cowboy boots and hiking boots. It may be hard to believe now, but even these modern footwear designs will most likely be replaced in the future with new outdoor footwear options.

Running Records: The Great Jesse Owens

James Cleveland Owens is one of the most famed record breaking athletes in the world.

In 1913, James Cleveland Owens was born as the seventh child of Henry and Emma Owens in Oakville, Alabama. Right away, the family started calling him J.C. and the name stuck. As a result, when the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio and James started at a new school, he introduced himself as J.C. The only problem was that his southern drawl got in the way. His teacher and fellow students were unable to understand James’ thick southern accent. So J.C. sounded to them like Jesse and this situation is what forced J.C. Owens to eventually go by Jesse Owens.

As most of you probably know, Jesse Owens is one of the greatest record breaking runners of all time. One of his most celebrated moments was in 1935 at the Big Ten held in Ann Arbor Big. After falling down a flight of stairs earlier that week and still reeling from back pain, he ran well enough to break 3 world records. They are as follows:

  • 220-yard dash in 20.3 seconds
  • 220-yard low hurdles in 22.6 seconds
  • Broad Jump at 26 feet 8¼ inches

These record breaking events convinced Jesse Owens, who was a sophomore at Ohio State at the time, that he was ready for the 1936 Olympics. It was a moment that inspired him as well as others.

A year later at the 1936 Olympics held in Nazi Germany, Jesse Owens continued to break records. As a consequence, he ended up winning four gold medals and being the first American in History to do this in a single Olympic meet. It was an event that showed his strong athleticism and bucked against Hitler’s idea that his Aryan nation was superior.

From this point on, Jesse Owens name was a staple in American history. Although he wasn’t offered endorsements and other deals Olympic athletes get today, he didn’t let this stop him. He used his athleticism to provide for his family in a variety of ways including as a motivational speaker up unto his death in 1980. However, even in death, he triumphed. Ten years after his death, he was awarded (posthumously) the Congressional Gold Medal by President George H.W. Bush. It was an honor well deserved because Owens showed humanity that when hard work meets up with opportunity it can do great things regardless of all of the barriers put in front of it. Therefore, he is a role model for anyone trying to do big things in life.

Vacation Spots for the Little Ones: DC!

Washington, DC may seem like a place you’d never want your kids to visit, and with good reason. Kids are very impressionable and there are just way too many bad influences hanging around Washington street corners, especially Pennsylvania Avenue. There are plenty of destinations that kids will thrill to that won’t upset your future ideological expectations for kids by exposing them to whatever political party you decree to be responsible for all the problems facing America. If you pick right, your kids can actually come away from Washington, DC without even being aware that it is the center of gridlock in the American government.

The National Zoo

Not a local zoo. Not a county zoo. Not a state zoo. But the National Zoo of America. And with good reason because the National Zoo in Washington, DC is a kids’ fantasia of incredible animals that will take their breath away. The National Zoo is famous for its Giant Pandas, of course, but don’t think that those cuddly creatures are the only attraction that will delight you and your children. The National Zoo in Washington, DC is home to big cats, reptiles, ocean creatures, exotic birds, and pretty much any other type of animal that you kid is crazy about.

American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History is more than just a collection of artifacts, mannequins and dinosaur bones. This traditional stopping place in Washington, DC has really gone high tech over the years, featuring the exciting planetary experience called SonicVision, an incredible new space show called Cosmic Collisions, and one of the most amazing IMAX film experiences in the country, featuring an ever-changing collection of must-see films. No kid will leave thismuseum complaining about how museums are boring.

Six Flags America

Bet you didn’t know there was a thrilling theme park just a half hour’s driving distance from the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. Midway through your trip to teach your young ones all about American history and the importance of becoming politically aware, take a day off to have just good old fashioned vacation fun. All kids love Six Flags theme parks and just because Six Flags America is almost near enough to see the Capitol’s dome from its highest point doesn’t mean it isn’t the kind of place to make your kids forget all about the boring places you’ve been dragging them to. Six Flags America might well be better known as Six Flags Superheroes as many of the most thrilling thrill rides have names associated with DC Comics heroes. For instance, a trip on the Superman: Ride of Thrill rollercoaster is a guarantee to pump new life into the bodies of older kids and teens who have seen just one too many marble structures. In addition to the requisite thrill rides, Six Flags America also has tamer rides to get your smaller children back into shape for returning to the standard tourist fare in Washington, DC.
