Shoe Encyclopedia: Quarter, Shank, Crampon and Top Lift

Jan 27, 2009 by Momie T.

Gather round, shoe terminology students. It is once again time for another lesson from the shoe encyclopedia. From the last lesson, you learned about the Louis heel (named after a famous king), the kitten heel, the plug of the moccasin and the heavy brogan. If you missed last week's lesson (or any others), don't forget to go back through and learn them. This shoe encyclopedia lesson focuses on the quarter, the shank, the crampon and the top lift

Quarter
When it comes to shoes, the quarter is not a coin. The quarter actually is the part of the shoe that covers the sides and back of the foot. Sometimes it consists of one whole piece of material, and other times, it is split into sections that are sewn together or held together by zippers or glue. The quarter is located on virtually every shoe. Therefore, styles and variety can vary significantly.

Shank
Sometimes the term shank can refer to a portion of ham but, luckily, not when referring to shoes. In a shoe, the shank is the portion that extends from the heel to the outsole. It gives structure to the shoe, as well as providing support to the arch of the foot. A shank can come in many different styles. All shoes have a shank.

Crampon
The crampon is often used in mountain and glacier climbing sports. These heavy-duty climbing devices clamp onto mountain boots and are used to trek through thick ice and snow. The metal spikes offer a strong grip. One type is made for trekking through snow and ice located on mountains and glaciers. The other type is made for ice climbing up steep vertical ice (or ice covered) structures.

Top Lift
The top lift, contrary to what it first sounds like, is actually located on the bottom of the shoe. It is the bottom portion of the shoe heel. The top lift supports and balances the shoe. The top lift can be thick, like in a platform shoe, but can also be very thin, like in a stiletto heel. Sizes can vary, depending on the shoe.

History of Shoe: EcoDragon, Eco-Friendly Shoeshemp

Jan 16, 2009 by Eisla Sebastian

Sustainable business practices are becoming more important to consumers. While many shoe manufacturers are slow to catch up to this trend, EcoDragon is on the forefront of the eco-friendly shoe manufacturing crusade. The company tries to create as little environmental impact as possible by selecting environmentally friendly construction materials and techniques. If you are interested in a comfortable shoe that is kind to the environment then check out the line offered by EcoDragon.

EcoDragon Background
EcoDragon is a natural shoe company that was found in 1993 by a pair of brothers named Wes and Eric Crain. Their goal was to design a line of shoes that utilized the ultra-environmentally friend fiber called hemp. Hemp was chosen as the construction material because it is easy to grow without chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides, is one of the strongest vegetable fibers in the world and can be woven into cloth or spun into twine and rope.

In addition to using the eco-friendly hemp as the primary material for their shoe line, the Crain brothers also utilized dyes that were fiber-reactive. This means that the dye quickly absorbs into the fiber and becomes naturally affixed to the fiber molecules. This eliminates the need to use chemical dye fixatives, again lessening the impact of the shoe line's manufacturing process.

Finally, all of the shoes produced by EcoDragon are hand sewn. This means that the natural shoes are durable as well as stylish. Furthermore, since the shoes are sewn by hand, there is no need to use petroleum products, glues and toxic chemicals. These reasons are why EcoDragon shoes are comfortable to wear as well as good for the planet.

EcoDragon Shoe Line
The EcoDragon shoe line all started with the Original Hemp Sandal. This sandal remains a top seller, but it is no longer the only shoe offered by the company. Other shoes in this collection include Hemp Clogs, BackSlides, EcoStyle, EcoCross, Nature Walk, Nature Wet, Back Sling and Hempadrilles. As you can see, EcoDragon offers a variety of shoe styles from basic sandals and clogs to casual business shoes.

History of Hush Puppies

Dec 19, 2008 by Eisla Sebastian

Casual shoes are something that nearly every person in the United States has at least one pair of; however, the concept of casual shoes is a relatively new invention. In fact, casual footwear really didn't evolve until the mid 20th century when Hush Puppies were introduced to the American public. The concept of Hush Puppies way of life was so popular that within a couple years of their introduction, nearly ten percent of all American adults had a pair in their closet.

The History of the Hush Puppies Shoe Line
The Hush Puppies shoe line was launched in 1957 at the National Shoe Fair, which was held in Chicago. The brand's name derived from a business meeting at a local fish restaurant where the creators of the line were eating what was called a hush puppy, which is a catfish and corn fritter. The reason they decided to use this as the name of their shoes was because hush puppies were used to quiet dogs on local farms to keep them from barking, furthermore, one of the phrases used at the time to describe worn out feet was "barking dogs." Hence the name was used because the comfortable design of the shoes would quiet the wearer's "barking dogs."

The popularity of the Hush Puppies was immediate. Shoe vendors lined up to order Hush Puppies for their shoe stores. This rush for the Hush was so vigorous that the company sold their first million pairs within 30 months of launching their company. The popularity of these shoes ran far beyond American families, as celebrities also enjoyed wearing these shoes, and soon Hush Puppies became the official shoe of the "swingin' set." This included the "Rat Pack" and Warren Beatty.

New Technology Launched by Hush Puppies
In addition to spawning a new casual trend in footwear, the Hush Puppies line also developed several technologies that made casual shoes worry-free. Worry-Free Suede, for example, was stain, scuff and water-resistant. Other technologies and inventions produced by the Hush Puppies line made casual shoes more comfortable and light weight. We can all thank this company for turning shoes into something that feels as good as they look.

So what is different about comfort boots as opposed to other boots? There are a few features that enhance comfort boots, providing not only a well fitting boot, but a comfortable boot. Weekly Comfort Item: Don't Let Your Feet go Flat

Sep 10, 2008 by Rica

The fact is, everyone wasn't born equal. Just talk to an athlete with flat feet, and he or she will quickly tell you how the purchase of athletic shoes must be done carefully. Stepping into orthotics with style is easy since most of the athletic shoes and daily footwear now provide orthotic support. Some individuals are required to have professional orthotics made based on the severity of a foot disorder. However, footwear with features that include multi-density orthotic support that is removable is available.

There are a number of brands that offer the privilege of stepping into orthotics with style including Timberland, Ryka, Ara and Rockport to name a few. There are a few specific features to look for when selecting a shoe that provides orthotic support. If purchasing a product from an online retailer, all of the features should be listed. The wearer should look for the shoe product that offers removable or built-in orthotic support, a contoured foot bed to provide added arch and heel support, a polyurethane midsole for maximum support for the wearer, and a durable multi-density rubber outsole.
With the wide variety of attractive, popular shoes available that provide quality support, why not be smart and provide the feet and body the proper support needed, which results in overall better health?

The feet are the main support of the human body and if one's feet hurt, this will cause awkward walking in an effort to steer away the pain, which results in misalignment of the body. Why not stop the madness and take the initiative of voluntarily stepping into orthotics with style by purchasing the proper shoes that provide the necessary orthotic support for the foot and body type?
Shoes with built-in or removable orthotic support do not necessary cost more than other shoes. Great care has been taken by leading shoe manufacturers to ensure their products are competitive on all levels. In this day and age when much is demanded of an individual, being able to be comfortable and avoid foot pain is important. In fact stepping into orthotics with style is in fashion.

History of Shoes: "Just Do It" Nike

Sep 5, 2008 by Eisla Sebastian

The history of shoes would not be complete without talking about Nike shoes. This shoe manufacturer has changed the way we not only view athletic shoes but also how we view athletes. Nike's sponsorship of athletes created many of the sports heroes of the 1980s and 1990s, and Nike continues to bring new athletes into the limelight. The history of this company is truly a rags to riches tale.

Nike's Modest Beginnings
Nike originally was called Blue Ribbon Sports, or BRS. This small business sold Onitsuka Tiger shoes (a Japanese brand) out of the back of the company founders Philip Knight and Bill Boweman's car at local track meets. After a half decade of selling from their car, the founding fathers of BRS opened their first retail outlet in 1966 in Santa Monica, California. By 1971 the company dropped the Onitsuka Tiger line and launched their own shoe line with the official Nike symbol, the Swoosh. The Swoosh first appears on "Nike," which was a soccer cleat.

Nike - The Goddess of Victory
In 1978 BRS was officially renamed Nike, Inc. The name "Nike," which had christened their first original shoe design, and now was the banner head of their company, was derived from the Greek goddess of victory. A fitting name for this sports shoe line that would eventually capture over 50 percent of the U.S. athletic shoe market.

Victory was a theme that Nike lived by over the next four decades. To market their products they sponsored top athletes in a variety of sports. These athletes not only wore Nike products, but they also were the spokespeople for the Nike brand. Nike sponsorships brought many winning athletes into the spotlight and created athletic superheroes that kids, teens and adults around the globe idolized.

Nike Products
Nike is responsible for some of the most popular athletic footwear and equipment on the market. Their brands include Nike Golf, Nike+, Nike Skateboarding, Nike Pro, Air Jordan and Team Starter. They also own the subsidiaries of Cole Haan, Umbro, Hurly International and Converse. With such a huge presence in the athletic shoe world, if you have bought a pair of athletic shoes in the last thirty years, chances are you bought a Nike brand.

Weekly Comfort Item/Procedure: Foot Health for Baby Boomers

Aug 20, 2008 by Rica

Baby boomers are moving into a new era in their lives where the demands are not the same or, in most cases, have been or need to be revised. The days of stilettos or the most popular shoes may be gone or may be worn more sparingly. It is more about comfort and maintaining good foot health. More baby boomers are taking preventative measures to avoid arthritis of the ankles and foot area, be it in a conservative manner or otherwise. This includes conforming to wearing the proper shoes that promote good foot health.

Many baby boomer women have, in the past, worn shoes for looks that may have caused damage to the feet due to pinching, improper sizing or the pushing down of the foot into pointed toed shoes in an extremely high heel. Men, on the other hand, may have worn shoes that were improperly fitted or possibly a shoe that simply was not ideal for the foot.

When considering foot health, baby boomers are more opt to consider comfort over style, though it is possible to have both. There are many options today for comfortable shoes that prevent injuries and promote foot health. There are multiple styles of shoes made by New Balance, Nike, Asics and many others that market shoes that look like basic active wear shoes or oxfords that are certainly accepted in a corporate environment yet provide the necessary support and balance to maintain good foot health.

The baby boomer generation, known as the "Me Generation," is an aggressive generation that will use their health coverage to ensure they are well taken care of, and boomers will make modifications and life style changes to ensure they have good foot health.

When times change, accepting new practices in one's lifestyle may take a little time, however being comfortable is important to all generations. With the many lines of fine active wear shoes that are on the market, comfort and style don't have to be compromised. The baby boomers may however be the leaders of the pack for future generations to show them that being cool doesn't mean giving up comfort and good foot health.

Construction Stories: The Skipper Wears Boat Shoes

Aug 15, 2008 by MJM

Summer is a great time of year. The hot weather makes such activities as boating and swimming desirable. And if you are headed out for a day on the lake, whether for fishing, sailing or water skiing, boat shoes are a must-have.

Boat shoes are not traditionally considered very stylish. They are very simple: canvas (the fashion gods shudder) or leather uppers attached to a rubber sole. The rubber sole, one might guess, is meant to keep the wearer from slipping on the deck of a boat that is most likely wet. In earlier times, boat shoes resembled moccasins more than anything else. Now, though, boat shoes are becoming as high tech as any other shoe.

Worried about foot odor out there on the lake? Some boat shoes are treated with special products that help maintain "all day freshness." Concerned about stains? You can get boat shoes that are made from stain resistant materials. Is there anything nanotechnology can't do? Additionally, high-quality boat shoes made with real metal eyelets are often treated with products that resist rust. After all, you don't want your shoes to get rusty.

Many boat shoes are also made with soles that are molded so that proper support is given to the foot. Your feet can become sore while you are out there padding around on the deck of a boat. Now you can enjoy space age comfort, even while escaping the space age on your sail boat, with items such as venting, sun protection and secured tab collars. Plus, you can get special grip soles that are made with advanced traction to keep you from falling off your boat.

It is also possible to get boat shoes made from a variety of fabrics and different features for different activities. Want special fishing boat shoes? You can get those. No matter what you
