CHARACTER COUTURE - LIPSTICK JUNGLE

Last night’s show tackled a big fashion issue as of late – copying designs. But it wasn’t a fairly simple situation of Forever 21 knocking off Victory’s designs. That’d be too easy. Turns out one of Victory’s former employees sold her sketches to a big-name designer, Richard Bragini. Since Victory didn’t have her sketches of the various dresses – a red, strapless sweetheart necklined number with a burgundy sash, a strapless, white lace number, a silverish-purple printed dress – anymore, because they were sold to Richard, she couldn’t do anything about it. But, this is based on a Candace Bushnell novel, so of course the next morning a wealthy investor stops by looking to invest in Victory’s label because his girlfriend loved one of her dresses. Good things always happen right after setbacks, right? So life is looking up for Victory, and her wardrobe is staying consistently fabulous – textured fabrics, bright colors, short, strapless dresses and bubble hems. I’m not trying to shortchange Wendy and Nico here, but the most interesting fashion dynamics happen to Victory because, well, she is a fashion designer.

EXTRA BAGGAGE

I’m well aware Marc Jacobs is a genius, and he’s had arguably one of his best years yet. But something that came down his runways in New York puzzled me – mini bags attached to larger bags. I know Jacobs is all about shocking the public with fashion that’s new and different (reverse high heels, for example), but wouldn’t buying a larger, chic tote make more sense than digging through the larger bag, then the smaller bag for your cell phone? Just a thought.

Is it a really long shirt or a dress? That’s the beauty of a shirt dress, they work both ways! Wear a checkered shirt dress with a wide white belt over leggings with black booties or wear a plain black one with a wide black belt and red pumps for a pop of color.

What award-winning menswear designer worked for both Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, has an amazing store in Soho, has a very successful eponymous clothing line as well as a collaboration with a popular shoe line and really gets the needs of his clientele? Give up? It is the amazing John Varvatos, one of my all time favorites.

The clothes are the kind that are well-made, and have that broken-in feeling even though they are created in sumptuous fabrics and hues (sound familiar?). His clean, minimalist aesthetic reflect his design pedigree as former VP of menswear for Polo Ralph Lauren and former head of menswear for Calvin Klein. So how giddy was I then, this past holiday season, when I discovered that Zappos.com carried some of the line. We carry the great 100% cotton pullovers, the modern short-sleeved polos and the "steal it from the boyfriend's closet" soft graphic tees. So ladies, shop for him but snag a few for yourself. I know I will.
