MAN OF HONOR

Jun 30, 2008 by Stephanie S.

Today, Giorgio Armani will be awarded a Legion of Honor in Paris. French president Nicholas Sarkozy, who has invited the designer to the presidential residence, as reported in Fashion Wire Daily, will pin the medal on the designer himself.

Armani is currently in the City of Lights promoting his haute couture line, Armani Prive, as well. Double duty, it seems, but I bet getting awarded the Legion of Honor isn’t looked at as a chore. What’s more, he’s receiving this award before he turns 74 on July 11 – yes, Armani has been around for that long. Congratulations, Armani!

THINGS GO BETTER WITH DIET COCA COLA

Jun 30, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Well at least in Patricia Field’s world they do. The stylist/designer has been commissioned by Selfedriges in London to design a limited edition Diet Coca Cola bottle sets to be sold exclusively at their stores and on Field’s website, patriciafield.com. There are four bottle in total, and no, they do not represent any of the Sex And The City characters. The bottles represent passion (the red one), fashion (the turquoise one), career (the gold one) and love (the pink one). Only 25 sets will be sold online at Field’s site, patriciafields.com, so you have to act quickly or else you only choice will be to hop a flight to London.

Don’t just wear any old pair of sandals this summer – embellished sandals add a little class and sass to any outfit. These flats by Giusseppe Zanotti are so pretty, you’ll feel like you’re wearing art on your feet. Wear them with a tiered skirt and a casual tank top.

CHARLOTTE YORK BY DESIGN

I think lots of women will agree with me that Charlotte on Sex and the City has a great classic style that any woman would love to imitate. That’s why this news is rather unexpected, but exciting nonetheless – Kristin Davis is creating a reduced-price line for Belk Inc., a Southern retail chain. Davis hails from Columbia, South Carolina, and grew up shopping at Belk, she told FabSugar.

Her brand will have sportswear, activewear, sleepwear, handbags, jewelry, belts and footwear. Phew! That’s a lot to just start out with. The price range is $30 to $240 and will debut in the south in August.

TIFFANY TENNIS BRACELETS, LITERALLY?

Jun 28, 2008 by Stephanie S.

Not quite, but I had to use it as a headline since we’re talking about tennis. Now, I used to play tennis, and the idea of running up and down the court with dangly or hoop earrings doesn’t really sit well with me. But, if those earrings are by Tiffany, I suppose I could deal with it.

If I were a real tennis pro however, like Maria Sharapova, I might be able to pull it off. She can, and she will – Sharapova partnered with Tiffany to create a line of earrings, Tiffany for Maria Sharapova, and she’s contracted to wear her earrings at major tennis events over the next two years. Elsa Peretti designed the earrings for the tennis champion. Maybe they’ll bring her even more luck – don’t all things that come in little blue boxes bring luck?

The What: Moschino Italian accented sneakers

The How To: 1.) Moschino polo T-shirt 2.) Diesel Zanity boot cut jean 3.) Dolce & Gabbana watch

The When: When you're going to the movies, or just hanging out with the guys.

The Why: Even movie stars would be jealous of this clean, polished-yet-casual look.

A MISSONI BRIDE

Jun 27, 2008 by Stephanie S.

It's rare you see Joy Bryant’s name in the tabloids…she always manages to steer clear of the gossip hounds and the paparazzi. Therefore, it was surprising – or maybe, not really surprising, yet surprising – for Couture to learn she will be married this Saturday in the Hamptons in a beachside ceremony at a house in Amagansett. The lucky guy is movie stuntman David Pope.

The 31-year-old Bryant will wear a dress by Missoni and change into another Missoni dress, a floral print number, during the reception, while her 37-year-old groom will don a pale gray Calvin Klein Collection suit. The last well-known bride to wear Missoni was Charlotte Rampling at her South of France wedding to her then-agent, Bryan Southcombe, over 35 years ago. So, in other words, it’s about time.

COLETTE POPS UP

Jun 27, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Louis Vuitton started the pop up concept this year with the pop up Vuitton stores within Japanese artist Murakami’s art installations, with the stores featuring bags by the artist. Well it has caught on and now Colette will have a pop up mini store in New York City this summer on Fifth Avenue at 54th Street. The store will be set up for one month from September 6 through October 5. Colette, as you know (and again a fashion shame on you if you do not) is the hip, chic Parisian behemoth at 213 rue Saint-Honoré which carries all of the cutting edge labels and luxury designers that any fashionista, tourista and Lou Doillon wanna be could not live without. Much to the chagrin of Parisians, Colette will temporarily close its store for massive renovations starting July 7th, with an anticipated reopening by the end of August. Don’t be to upset though if you are in Paris and want to shop there, they will have a Suprette parked out front so you can still get your shop on.

THE DAILY TREND - TWO-TONED SHOES

Two-toned shoes add an element of surprise to simple high-heeled oxfords or pumps. Go bright with a shoe like this Kate Spade pump in blue/pink shades, or blend in a bit (but not too much!) with neutral/black two-toned slingbacks.

It is funny how persuasive the news media can be when it comes to celebs, ‘It’ girls and creating the buzz around the latest must-have accessories. For instance, Couture has been loving the Delman Uli ankle strap thong sandal for months now. Why? Because they are simply designed, comfortable yet very chic, making them perfect for almost any occasion. They can be paired with white jeans and a leopard print halter top, with a great LBD (little black dress) or with shorts and a T-shirt. Clearly, we are not the only ones loving this shoe, the Delman Uli recently was given a shout out in June’s In Style magazine. Couture.Zappos.com carries the featured Silver Mirrored Metallic, as well as the lovely Rose Gold Mirrored Metallic hue and the delightful Midnight Blue Mirrored Metallic hue. And yes, Couture was, again, ahead of the trend curve here.

The off the shoulder look might be reminiscent of the ‘80s, but this Just Cavalli top definitely does not have a Flashdance feel. The print and purple and black colors make it pop, the bow is sweet as can be - it's perfectly modern. Pair it with plain shorts and embellished flats.

PATRICIA FIELD'S DESTINATION STYLE

Jun 25, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Ms. Field is quite the busy woman these days, even with the cancellation of Cashmere Mafia. There is the frenzy surrounding the Sex And The City movie, her ongoing collaboration with Payless, styling videos for one of the hottest songbirds in Japan, to name a few. But her plate just got a little fuller with her latest collaboration with the Home Shopping Network. Patricia and her long-time design partner, David Dalrymple, have created a 50-piece collection that ranges from sportswear to denim, dresses and accessories to be sold exclusively on HSN for five days starting September 23. The idea, according to HSN’s Chief Executive Officer, Mindy Grossman, is to build buzz around the brand with an event during New York Fashion Week, which will also include a runway show and will be broadcast on HSN and HSN.com at launch time.

Many of the pieces, which span her career as a stylist and designer, will be recognizable to viewers, Field told WWD. The looks for sale range from the now iconic dress that Sarah Jessica’s character Carrie wore in the SATC movie, her famous T-shirt dresses with her Martine illustrations and a sequin blazer, to name a few. So ladies, if you can’t get to New York City to check out her Patricia Field store on Bowery, then this is the next best thing.

HOW TO WEAR IT - SUMMER WEDDING, WOMEN

Classic black is flattering on everyone, but dress it up with gold accessories to avoid the look of mourning. The Kate Spade sandals are especially great for wedding season - sparkly with the perfect heel height, you'll stand out - hopefully the bride won't mind you stealing her spotlight.

The What: Kate Spade Loupe sandal

The How-To: 1) Just Cavalli V-neck black dress 2) Dolce & Gabbana earrings 3) Dolce & Gabbana gold bangle set 4) Carlos Falchi metallic anaconda box clutch

The When: Wear it at one of the many weddings you'll attend this summer.

The Why: Black and gold jewelry are always in style.

Polo shirts
for guys with the collar popped up is hot. Not! But really, the popped collar trend is so over – wear your polo with board shorts or khaki shorts and flip flops and you’ll look every bit casual cool. Again, restrain yourself from popping the collar. It’s over. Move on.

Summer fashion should be comfortable and casual, which is why sneakers are ideal for guys. So, tell us fellas, which sneaker would you choose to wear out and about from the beach to the bar and why? The Cesare Paciotti Euro-inspired sneaker or the Marc Jacobs sportier pair?

If all the vixens, sexy ladies, etc... in the world needed new summer sandals, these Cesare Paciotti shoes would be the first pair they’d buy. Sexy to a T, pair them with a sweet dress or girlish skirt for your softer side, or step it up a notch and show off your tanned legs in these sky-high heels by paring them with a mid-thigh grazing bubble hem dress to indulge your saucier side.

IT TOOK FOUR YEARS TO FIGURE THAT OUT? REALLY?

Jun 22, 2008 by Stephanie S.

For four years now, Louis Vuitton has been trying to convince a judge that Dooney & Bourke's multicolored monogram handbags were too similar to their own monogrammed purses and customers would get confused (we’re talking about the white/colored monogrammed purses for LV and D&B, for clarification). On Friday May 30, the judge determined consumers probably won't confuse one for the other and ruled in Dooney & Bourke's favor; LV used a larger font size and a combination of letters and shapes, D&B just uses an unadorned DB.

So, it took four years to figure that out? Vuitton plans to appeal the decision. Of course they do.

A TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND

Jun 21, 2008 by Stephanie S.

The Sundance Film Festival will pay a tribute to design great Yves Saint Laurent with two documentaries examining his life.

Couture wrote about Yves' passing and his wonderful contributions to fashion earlier this month. The first documentary by Filmmaker David Teboul, follows the designer's life from his youth in Algeria and his ride as Christian Dior's successor at age 21 to the creation of his own world-famous house in the 1960s in Yves Saint Laurent: His Life and Times, with help from exclusive interviews from Saint Laurent's mother and longtime business manager and partner Pierre Bergé.

The second documentary,
Yves Saint Laurent: 5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris, peers behind the doors of the fashion house where Teboul follows St. Laurent as he prepares his final 2001 women's collection, capturing the evolution of his vision and showing how, in roughly eight weeks, the designer's drawings are transformed into a glorious reality of a couture line.

Both films should be insightful and inspiring. Maybe one or both will merit praise – much like Saint Laurent got for most of his life.

KARL LAGERFELD ON THE ROAD

Jun 20, 2008 by Stephanie R.

The man with the golden touch and fingerless gloves, Karl Lagerfeld, designer of Chanel, Fendi, Lagerfeld Gallery, product campaign photographer, writer, has just added road safety to his lofty resume. One does not think of road safety as a hot or sexy commodity, nor do you associate the Kaiser with a fluorescent yellow safety vest, but it is a collaboration that is underway for summertime. Lagerfeld will appear in the road safety ads in France with his typical dour expression, white ponytail and dark glasses, all the while sporting the yellow safety vest encouraging drivers to equip themselves with safety vests with this simple statement, "It's yellow, it's ugly, it doesn't match anything, but it can save your life." But fear not, Karl remains his stylish self, pairing the safety vest with a black suit, crisp white shirt and bow tie.

Shorts are the best option for an evening pool party because 1.) the party usually starts when the sun's out, so you can catch some sun on your gams before night falls 2) if anyone throws you in the pool, they won't take as long to dry off.

The What: Moschino shorts

The How-To: 1.) Moschino top 2.) Derek Lam Camille shades 3.) King Baby Studio earrings 4.) Marc by Marc Jacobs zip clutch 5.) Elie Tahari wedges

The When: A pool party that starts in the evening and goes until dawn.

The Why: It's a cute outfit, why wouldn't you want to wear it?

With the Beijing Olympics just months away, sporting modern asian-interpreted styles is so ahead of the trend curve that will ensue. Be inspired by Mandarin collars, Emperor jackets, origami or as we were, the male Yukata (lite, summer kimono). We chose this French Connection Dune Dream wrap dress for its modernizing of the Yukata with its dropped waist, deep criss-cross front and low slung belt. But remember folks you heard the trend-spot here first!
