Burnished sienna and coffee colors are natural hues for the season, but when they are enveloped in architectural platforms and a modern twist on mod back-zip booties they become a necessity. The Couture team is lusting after CoSTUME NATIONAL's conical heels, buttery soft leathers, daring height (can you say five inches?) platforms and the dual texture booties. Our picks: CoSTUME NATIONAL brandy-hued peep toe platform and their moro-hued suede and leather bootie.

THE WEEKLY BABBLE - PROJECT RUNWAY

Sep 25, 2008 by Stephanie_Sims

How ironic that the winning design was worn by the designer who was sent home? Here's the rundown from last night.

The challenge: Design an outfit for another contestant. The catch - the outfit has to fit a musical genre, ie. rock 'n roll, punk or hip hop.

The winner:
SS: Korto, those pants are pretty hot. When paired with all the accessories, the outfit was within the genre but outside of the box. Way to go, chick.

JF: Korto, way to go! I'm not surprised because Korto has mad skills. To go outside of what she usually does and win it, really shows her talent.

The loser:
SS: Rock 'n roll shouldn't be boring. And the look Jerell was wearing, designed by Suede, was a bit boring. Don't get me wrong, the pants looked hot and the vest had a nice design, too. But the shirt made it look a bit too Godspell, with the sternum exposed. The sternum exposure was the only risk taken in the whole outfit. A bit too safe, and let's face it, rock 'n roll is never safe!

JF: Suede, you played it a little too safe. However, I know why Kenley gets to stay, drama. She had no clue what hip hop was. And to have one of the kings of hip hop (LL Cool J) as the guest judge, should have gotten Kenley the boot for that outfit. But like I said she's drama, and drama equals ratings. Fine. It's not like Suede was that awesome anyway, and as her outfit showed, she really missed the mark by miles. Bye-bye Suede, bye-bye.

It's really getting down to the wire. The next challenge determines the final three who will go to New York Fashion Week. Come on, you can tell us, who won't be going there?

HOW TO WEAR IT - ROCKER CHIC AT WORK

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2527/h2wi_rockerchic.jpg

Work should be fun and rock stars always have fun. So, that gave us an idea for an outfit. If you can stretch the dress code just a bit at your office, this look is rockin'.

The What: Rocker chic at work.

The How To: Moschino jacket, Mochino printed dress, Sigerson Morrison flat leather boots and Marc by Marc Jacobs bag.

The When: When you need to toughen up your look - pairing the dress with the jacket and boots makes it a little less girly.

The Why: Who doesn't want to look like a rock star?

Last week we gave you the scoop on one of the hottest parties of the New York fashion season, but we would be remiss in our Couture duties if we did not fill you in on what was hot. This, of course, is of special interest, as our very own Couture carries the hot fashion item spotted. Actress Zoe Saldana, dressed in a black skimmer leg length suit, was sporting the mega high heeled Piercing Pump 3 in black while in attendance of the DSquared He Wood + She Wood fragrance launch party on September 10 in NYC. Ms. Saldana worked the room in her uber high heels with nary a care, giving the paparazzi plenty of photo opportunities and a fabulous fashion stare.

ROMANTIC PUNK

The Couture team is feeling the rebel yell of the changing season, torn between our ladylike underpinnings and our rebellious spirit. What better way to express it than merging the sweet with a little spice? Absolutely none! We are craving black leggings tucked into our navy buckle detail male-inspired punk-esque boots, a little pirate swagger with a dash of skulls and skeletons scarf, ladylike indifference with a leather fringed handbag, channeling a little Belgian punk spirit with lace up booties, and cuffed perfection with a crown insigna silver cuff.

Our pics: Paul Smith Navy Back Zipper Boots with Buckle Detail, Roberto Cavalli Black Patent Leather Lace up Ankle Boots, Alexander McQueen Black/White Tree of Life scarf , Jill Stuart Onyx Leather and Metal Fringe St. Germain Felicity Satchel, and King Baby Studio Crowned Heart Cross Cuff.

HE WOOD + SHE WOOD

What do you get when you mix the brothers Caten, a new fragrance launch and fashion luminaries? One of the most coveted parties of the fashion season. Dean and Dan Caten, co-owners and Creative Directors of Dsquared2, the Milan-based über fashion brand, breezed into town Wednesday, September 10, to launch their new fragrance, He Wood + She Wood. The dual fragrance fete was held at the duo’s new New York meatpacking district showroom, far from and high above the maddening fashion week crowd. As the fashion cognoscenti know, the Caten brothers were legendary party promoters once upon a time early in their career, so a party invite from them is the holy grail stamp of an assured good time, and as the paparazzi pics showed, a good time was had by all. The theme was one of wood, based on the designer’s love of the outdoors and their upbringing in Canada. The wood element was found throughout the production, touching on everything from the paneled decor, to the wooden logs that held the fragrances, to the planks that held the food, right down to the fragrance bottles themselves. DJ Derek Monteiro spun a funky, eclectic mix of tunes, while party-goers shimmied and shaked, enjoying the continual flow of Mumm champagne and hors d’oeuvres. Couture had our very own insiders giving us the inside scoop. They spent the enviable evening rubbing their Prada hips and rocker chic elbows with the likes of designer Marc Jacobs (can you say oo la la) and the new object of his affection, Lorenzo Martone, actresses Zoe Saldana and Stacey Dash, singer Cassie, model Tyson Beckford and Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe, or in other words, one beautiful person after another. Of course the real stars of the evening were the scents. The He Wood She Wood fragrances were inspired by the Caten’s love of nature, by its richest and strongest, most beautiful and basic of elements: wood. He Wood was a heady mix of White Fir, Vegetal Amber, Musk, Violet Blossoms, Vetiver and Cedarwood, while She Wood was a mix of Lemon, Jasmine Petals, Heliotrope, Violet Blossoms, Neroli, Vegetal Amber, Vetiver and Musk.

As the fabulous evening came to a close, I believe our Couture attendees summed it up best, “It was a beautiful, balmy evening, filled with beautiful people, fabulous surroundings, mixed with loads of laughter and a little mayhem thrown in.” Enough said!

PIECE OF ME

Sep 17, 2008 by Stephanie_Sims

No I am not speaking of the ‘lifestyles of the rich and famous’, nor of ‘that Britney shameless’ but of that ‘xtra, xtra, this just in,’ a new tattered, torn denim spin. The look of which I speak, is on full display as Ms. Spears dances around in an original pair of Destroyed Brand jeans in her VMA winning video Piece of Me, a look which is fast becoming a small trend in the denim kingdom. The style, a bleach-splattered, ‘drive over them a few times with your car wheels’, is a resurgence of its edgy predecessor from the early ‘90s. However, the Piece of Me video is not the only one leading the ripped charge, designer Christopher Kane paired ripped denim with lady-like blouses for his Spring 2008 runway collection, and denim maker Destroyed Brand, takes a more stylized approach to their torn designs with spray paint bleaching and strategically placed horizontal rips. If you are like me, or any one else who has ever owned, worn or designed a pair knows, the rips grow with every washing, so do watch your strategic placement. The best news of all? This time around the look comes in multiple washes and variations on the rip theme. Yay!

We here at Couture love fashion, as you already know, but we especially love great fashion presentation. Another of our fashion favorites, due to her consistent ability to effortlessly pull off a 'rocker chic' aesthetic, is Janelle G. She rocks empire waist frocks, a plethora of skinny jeans, drapey strapless tops and enviable leather cut out sky high heels. Ms. Janelle, we love the way you rock it!

RESURRECTION'S COMING OF AGE

Sep 16, 2008 by Stephanie R.

It is not often that you hear shopkeepers say that items are too special to be sold in their store, but that is just what Mark Haddaway and Katy Rodriguez did with their special vintage finds. That is, until now. Come October 30, the co-owners of the Resurrection boutique in Manhattan, a 12-year-old veritable institution of vintage finds located in the East Village, will be auctioning off an expansive trove of vintage treasures through Christie’s auction house. Known for their discerning eye, many pieces up for auction represent significant time capsules in the fashion universe. The pieces up for auction are special indeed, with items from Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin, Norma Kamali, Vivienne Westwood and Yves Saint Laurent to name a few, making this an auction on which all fashionable curator eyes will be on. Simon Andrews, Christie’s specialist of 20th-century decorative art and design has categorized the lot into four categories: avant-garde pop culture, romanticism, discord and disorder of punk, and designer wear. Notable items such as the iconic Pierre Cardin bubble vinyl satellite cape circa 1969, represent the pop-art decade; T-shirts made by Westwood and Malcolm McLaren for the Sex Pistols and made famous by them, display the iconography of Union Jacks, upside-down crucifixes, "God save the Queen" and "Destroy" slogans, represent the anarchic decadence of discord and disorder, better known as the punk era; handmade leather pieces for Sly Stone during his Sly and The Family Stone heyday, mark the seventies decade of rock/punk; and items from Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent, represent the designer wear era of the ‘80s.

The Rabanne pieces, especially the chainmaille-esque wedding dress made of silver and white leather held together by metal rings, are expected to fetch the highest bids out of the entire lot. Regardless to what the duo’s lot brings in, it will be an interesting bidding session, surely with a little fisticuffs thrown in for good measure. What? Did you think all of those important vintage pieces would sell in a civilized fashion? Not!

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BAG, CHANEL THAT IS

Sep 15, 2008 by Stephanie R.

It is not often that a fashionista has the opportunity to come face-to-face with a classic, quilted Chanel bag circa 1955 that is large enough to sit inside of with a few friends, a DJ and a mini turntable, but that is exactly what the traveling Mobile Art: Chanel Contemporary Art Container, a collaboration between design innovator Karl Lagerfeld, and the celebrated architect Zaha Hadid, presents to you. The collapsible mobile pod designed by Hadid, will house all of the rotating exhibits that will travel to Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York, London, Moscow, before settling in its final destination of Paris. The twenty artisans received a brief from Lagerfeld with the instructions of creating an exhibit that revolved around Chanel’s back catalog of the iconic handbags and would capture the essence of the house’s most famous bag, the quilted handbag. The original collaboration between Lagerfeld and Hadid began when the two were photographed for a W 092 Power Couple magazine photoshoot, where Lagerfeld chose Hadid as his architectural hero. The interpretations of the Chanel bag are vast and inspirational, from the oversized 2.55 quilted purse with a video installation, to a room lined with leather as though walking inside of a handbag, to a photo essay shot in an American landscape interpretation of the Chanel workshops. The exhibit will be making the rounds for the next two years, so don’t miss a truly unique experience, because if you do, fashion shame on you! DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT - DELMAN

Sep 10, 2008 by Stephanie R.

ds_100_2.jpg

It is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius... Okay not really, but it is the dawning of a new era at the Delman company. The iconic shoe brand, known for their exquisite quilted flats, will be celebrating more than its 90th anniversary next year, it will also be celebrating a top-to-bottom makeover. The brand, owned by Nina Footwear Group, made its first industry shoe print in the early 1900s and grew steadily well into the ‘90s. With the brand having a slowdown in sales and facing a changing customer demographic, new management was put in place, as well as a younger, hipper designer placed at the helm. This formula proved to be a winning mix, giving the brand better positioning and the appropriate energy injection that was needed. The payoff? A more modern design aesthetic resulting in hipper, more youthful styles, a new fan base, and more streamlined business operations. In recent months, the new designs have generated a lot of buzz for the brand, as well as having countless celebrities photographed in their shoes, both on and off the red carpet.

Here at Couture.Zappos.com, we did not need the generated buzz to know the label is a great discovery. From the Mona patent flats (a favorite of actress Brooke Shields) to the Stella slingback pumps, to the multi-hued patent leather chunky heeled sandals, there is something for everyone to love. What are we loving now? The Stella peep toe platform slingback pumps in black patent leather with a silver platform, the Mona patent leather round toe flats in navy, and the Gaiety-S suede boot with buckle detailing in chocolate.

Fall is upon us, and that means exciting new additions to your wardrobe. Be 'red ahead' of the crowd with an eye-catching pop of color to add oomph to any outfit. The Couture team was quite taken with the saturated red hues in many of the designer collections for Fall 2008. What would any outfit be without a fabulous accessory (most notably, a great handbag)? Nothing. Our faves: D&G Dolce & Gabbana Lisa Shiny Soft Calfskin Medium Shoulder Bag, Jean Paul Gaultier Satin Mini Minaudiere Bag, Furla Clara Shopper Grande Crocco and the Kate Spade Savona Evan Shoulder Clutch.
