On the cover of the December 29 WWD, it was all about the 'Right Mix' of fabrications that designers have played with for Spring 09. Women's Wear featured a lovely Kate Spade oversized clutch in yarn and vinyl, as well as a L.A.M.B. cotton canvas and leather clutch. What does all of this mean to you dear reader? That our very own Couture buyers were atop of the trends, and we carry similar styles from Kate Spade and L.A.M.B. Our picks: Kate Spade Tortola Paola in Natural/Gold and the L.A.M.B. Signature Carlisle Samburu Clutch in Vinyl and Leather.

A shirt, is a shirt, is a shirt, right? Wrong! There are the classic button downs, the logo-emblazoned versions, and then there is the classic silhouette given a little graphic edge. We are loving this C'N'C Costume National Logo Print Front Button Up. Pair it will dark rinse jeans or black dress pants, paired with a funky lace up shoe or boot. Um, to maintain that edgy cool, leave the shirt untucked.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT - ALISHAN

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-3723-2748/alishan.jpg

What isn’t there to love about elegant, contemporary jewelry with a classic feel, and eclectic twist? Absolutely nothing. That is what makes the Alishan jewelry line all the more a gem (pardon the pun), amongst the throngs of jewelry designers on the market today. The Armenian designer migrated to the States in 1970 to continue his study of art and design, settling in California. Soon thereafter, Alishan began his career as a stone setter, and soon found himself climbing the ranks of the jewelry design field. His unusual mix of textures, materials and cultural references, result in an artistic expression that enlivens the brand with simple, elegant designs. The line is infused with sterling silver, 18K gold, diamonds and pearls, tastefully displayed in pendants, clover rings, and drop earrings.

Once the Couture team stopped oooooohing and ahhhhhhing, we collectively decided we wanted one of everything, but decided a few favorites were best. We are coveting the Sterling Silver and 18K Gold Double Cross Earrings With Diamonds, swooning over the Sterling Silver and 18K Gold Cross Pendant With Diamond and Pearl Drop, and loving the Sterling Silver and 18K Gold Clover Ring with Diamonds.

Pink, especially pearlized pink, is that delightful hue that bridges the color gap between youthful abandon and grown up sophistication. What's even better than that? It is one of the hot color trends for Spring/Summer 2009. We are loving this Moschino Cheap and Chic Dual Handle Pearlized Pink Shoulder Satchel. Pair it now with a black or navy turtleneck sweater dress and boots, and for the spring, think sleeveless sheaths and peep toe pumps.

This season it is the sophisticated yet fun geometric embellished styles leading the fray. The Couture team is loving the BC Footwear Pageboy peep toe metallic bronze flats with cutout and leaf shape design, Apepazza Pissarro bold purple flat with octagonal toe box ornamenation, Marc by Marc Jacobs pointy toe silver flat with stars and ribbons, Christian Michael's Maeko classic square toe slingback flat with squoval toe box buckle, Romantic Soles Paisley in a modern pop of green with the large gold button toe box accent, and the Christian Laconic red semi-round toe flat with hearts and stars insole and red acrylic toe box accent piece.

THE HOLIDAYS HAVE GONE TO THE DOGS...

Dec 18, 2008 by Stephanie R.

... in the form of chic little cashmere doggie sweaters, coordinated leashes and collars. Designer Phillip Lim, of 3.1 Phillip Lim, designed the line of delightful sweaters and accessories using his French bulldog Oliver as his muse. Now, to me, clothing for dogs has always been a conundrum. They always seem too fussy, or worse still, too frou frou from the start. Come on, it's not like your pet begs you for a new outfit to one-up his doggie counterparts at the dog run. However, although I hate to admit it, Lim's doggie designs just may have changed my mind. These mini cashmere sweaters come in an assortment of colors - heather gray, a red/navy rugby stripe, and a soft pink - but are priced at $150 each (um, can you say expensive?). If you want to give your pet the ultimate chi chi gift, go for the $375 gift set, which includes a red sweater, a red collar and red leash. Thankfully though, Lim showed restraint and designed fashionably subtle looks that any four-leg cutie would be proud to be seen in. Better still, he did not debut the line along side his Spring/Summer 2009 line, with furry friends scurrying down the runway in uncomfortable outfits under glaring lights and non-stop light bulb flashes. Woof!

Color blocking, a strong trend for spring and fall 2008, is a delightful update of the geometric pattern that we have been seeing the last few seasons. The look has been seen on dresses and accessories in a fusion of color in bands of fabric, or patchwork designs in leather. It lends that essential pop to a monotonal outfiit, or brings a little color creativity to a multi color mix. The Couture team is loving the Sergio Rossi Peep Toe Patchwork Pumps, the Steve Madden Kobraa Bright Multi Flats, the Chinese Laundry Niko Brown Multi Pointy Toe Pumps, and the Baby Phat Multi Strap Snake Embossed Sandal.

Argyle is that preppy staple that never really goes out of style. It can be that bold colored pattern that just pops an outfit or a subtle hint of the design that makes a chic, quiet statement. We are loving the combination of argyle meets plaid in this v-neck plaid-front and stripe sweater from Moschino. Wear it alone or over a plain tee, paired with navy pants or dark rinse denim.

IT'S AN UGG LIFE FOR ME

Dec 13, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Helping a child in need is bettering one's life indeed, or so the saying goes. Ugg Austrialia's Art & Sole 2008 does just that, with bids/sales benefiting the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Boots by Ugg are painted with signature designs from the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Jessican Simpson (her second year), Cindy Crawford, Kelly Ripa, Ashley Tisday, and many, many more. The one-of-a-kind art designs are auctioned off online, with bids beginning December 1 through December 14 at ugg's website. In case you are not familiar with St. Judes Hospital, it was started by Danny Thomas - father, actor, childhood activist - in Memphis, Tennessee many decades ago. His work continues on through the ALSAC and its fundraising efforts, not to mention Marlo Thomas, Danny's daughter, whose tireless efforts help to keep catastrophic childhood diseases and cancer at the forefront of hope for a cure and research. So, do bid for a good cause, and check out the extensive Ugg boutique here at Zappos.com.

THE LOOMSTATE

Dec 11, 2008 by Stephanie R.

First it was the ultra cool denim line which burgeoned into a full blown clothing line. Next it was the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist in 2007. Then of course there is the furniture pieces, better known as Rogan Object and the brand's extension into shoes. How could Target not be far behind? Well, actually they were not. Target, known for their designer capsule collections, had its eye on target with getting Rogan on board. The Loomstate project, reflects designer Rogan Gregory’s environmentally conscious designs and approach to fashion. In April 2009, the mass retailer will unveil the Loomstate by Rogan Gregory label with a kick-off of items for both men and women. The line will feature luxurious sustainable fabrics rendered into simple styles and shapes. The line will range from $14.99 to $44.99, with its launch coinciding with National Earth day on April 22. Now this is not the first fashion foray for Rogan with Target, he designed Rogan for Target in May of this year. Of course as most recessionistas already know, mass retailers in this economy are a girl's best friend.

GIVE ME LIBERTY AND GIVE ME KATE

Dec 9, 2008 by Stephanie R.

The divine Ms. Kate Moss is at it again with her newest presentation for Topshop for spring. The Londonista is working with London-based Liberty store print designers to create exclusive fabrics for her upcoming line for S/S 2009. Liberty - a print maker that dates back to 1875 - is not new to high profile collaboration. In the past they have worked with everyone from Nike to the Gap. The Kate Moss for Topshop prints are not the brands first foray into fashion with Topshop either. Earlier in the month they launched a lingerie line made from their famous prints for Topshop's Oxford Circus locale. So if you are a fan of Moss and Liberty, keep your eyes peeled on Topshop's online site because anything Ms. Moss makes, sells out like hot cakes.

GETTING ALL HOPPED UP

Dec 8, 2008 by Stephanie R.

If you are like most guy, you like your beer cold, at the end of your day, with a few of your best buds and a ball game playing on the wide screen plasma t.v., right? Not necessarily. If you have ever been to Exsalonce Salon & Day Spa in Chicago, you get your hops served in the form of a facial. Yes, a facial. The Beer Enzyme Facial, a male-focused spa treatment, is a warm and soothing facial that includes a rejuvenating exfoliating cream that contains three percent beer hop enzymes, plus the normal skin nourishing oils . The enzymes in beer gently exfoliate skin dislodging dead skin cells and revealing a newer, more supple skin surface. After the exfoliating cream, you are steamed, re-moisturized and massaged into a beer-relaxed state of mind. Well, sort of. What is a guy's motivating incentive to have the facial? The spa offers you a cold one prior to your facial to help get you prepped for your hour-long treatment. Of course you could always opt for tea or water, but why go against the grain. To make an appointment, you can contact the Exsalonce Spa at 773.327.4848.

CALENDAR GIRL

Dec 6, 2008 by Stephanie R.

You have to hand it to French Vogue and Carine Roitfeld, the magazine is never a boring read, especially the current issue. Provocateur extraordinaire, photographer Terry Richardson, has re-imagined the Vargas girl for modern times in the form of a 2009 calendar for the issue. There is a partially clad model on the cover dressed as a cat lapping up a bowl of milk; model Alana dressed as a naughty french maid for January; an adorable hanna as a gun-toting cowgirl for February; Ms. Taryn in cherries and stripes for March; Anna J. as a lingerie clad sailor for April, Anna S. as a good scout for May; a kitty hugging Erin for June; an ‘Americana-clad’ cheerleader Ali for July; and a nurse clad Model of the Year, Jourdan Dunn for August. Of course there are several more months that were not mentioned, but you get the picture. So if you are a Francophile, collect calendars, or just enjoy interesting takes of photography, this calendar is for you.

THE SARTORIAL STATUS SYMBOL RETURNS

Dec 5, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Selvedge denim, Long an underground denim-head’s whispered secret, has now made a triumphant return and gone main stream. Yes, even if you never noticed that white seam exposed on an upturned cuff, you have probably heard of it. What started as a jean phenomenon in the early '90s with cult jean makers like Evisu, has now reached the masses with help in part from retailers like J.Crew’s selvedge brand. For a better understanding on its importance, it helps to think of selvedge denim like an estate wine with limited bottling and distribution, an indigo brew of sorts. Traditionally peddled to men only, selvedge is now finding a home in a woman’s closet as much as a man’s thanks in part to the boyfriend jean trend. The name in itself has significance, as it means self-edge, referring to the way the fabric is woven. Selvedge, was traditionally made with shuttle looms which passed a continuous thread back and forth, where the white thread looped back into the blue, a solid, white edge was formed. The shuttle looms were sold off to the Japanese in the 1950s/60s and ceased production here. This of course explains the cult-like following of the thick, rough-hewn Japanese denim that has global retailers making pilgrimages to denim shrine Hinoya Plus Mart in Tokyo. What is even better than that? Zappos carries it. Yay! Couture’s pick: Evisu Embroidered Brush Stroke Jean.

A HOMAGE TO COCO

Dec 4, 2008 by Stephanie R.

The House of Chanel has a long and storied history thanks in part to Dame Gabrielle Chanel herself, and the guardian of the modern-day brand, Karl Lagerfeld. The interest in the brand has never been stronger in modern times than now. There have been two films this year alone on Chanel herself, along with a fascinating exhibition making its rounds around the world. Now comes a homage to the silent film era with a film on Mme. Chanel from Kaiser Karl himself. A high-budget, 10 minute film which portrays a young Coco from 1913, the year that Chanel first set up shop, to 1923, when Chanel was established and thriving. I caught the two minute teaser online, and it is a clever nod to Chanel’s talent, her innate charm and ability to seduce many men along her fashionable way. Leave it to Karl to bring the film industry full circle with the usage of silent era techniques - flip cards, no sound, filming in black and white. The technique is in keeping with the economic times, when we as people are seeking a more grounded and meaningful way of expression, of life. They say history repeats itself, in this case it is aptly so. The film will appear on Chanel's website on December 5, 2008.

Ladies, rev your engines! Cooler air calls for leather jackets – but think biker chic, not greased lighting. A cropped, contemporary black leather jacket looks tough-girl fabulous over a long tank top with skinny jeans tucked in to black boots. Soften the look by pairing it with a flowy skirt and metallic pumps. Both looks are understated yet sexy. Our pick: Bod & Christensen Black Azzure Lamb Bolerzo.

AN ODE TO SPROUSE

Dec 3, 2008 by Stephanie R.

The House of Vuitton had one of its most successful accessory collaborations in its history with the late artist Stephen Sprouse in the early 2000s. Who could forget those day-glo graffiti handbags, more grade school scribble than Pollack strokes, lighting the wrists of downtown denizens and uptown mavens alike. Well clearly Vuitton couldn’t as the brand’s Creative Director, Marc Jacobs, has designed a new line of handbags that sort of pick up where the Sprouse bags left off. It is important to point out though that the bags are not a rip off of the artist’s original works, but more of an admiration of his artistry and success. The ode comes at a time of renewed interest in the artist’s works, starting with a retrospective - “Rock on Mars” - at the Deitch Projects’ Wooster Street gallery from Jan. 9 to Feb. 28, and a new Stephen Sprouse book. Deitch approached Jacobs about doing something with Vuitton to coincide with the retrospective and the tribute line was born. The line focuses on two of Sprouse’s mainstays: graffiti and the rose, with the pieces being available in both accessories and ready-to-wear. So if you did not acquire an original Sprouse-Vuitton piece in 2001, here is your chance to get in on it this time around.

If you have ever owned a bicycle, then the odds are you have had a flat tire or two, right? Um, yes. The lifespan of an inner tube is a short one in use, but has a lasting environmental effect in landfills, that is until now. English Retreads handbags, more Goodyear than Gucci, are handbags and accessories made out of reclaimed treads from landfills and tire manufacturers in Colorado. These cutting-edge bags are the brainchild of entrepreneur Heather English, a strict vegetarian who had searched for and could not find a stylish, eco-friendly alternative to leather handbags. The design process for each bag begins with the treads being machine washed, buffed, cut and shaped into one of the many handbag styles the company makes. Each handbag is unique due to each tread providing distinct details and markings from its previous use. English Retreads carries bags for both men and women, in styles ranging from satchels, to vertical messengers, to mini shoulder totes. The bags can be found online at englishretreads.com and thegreenloop.com, with prices ranging from $15 for a key chain to $209 for a large tote. Buy more than one though, because everyone needs a spare, at least in Colorado.

GAP'S JINGLE BELL ROCK

Dec 2, 2008 by Stephanie R.

If you are starting to feel all warm and fuzzy, dreaming of sugar plums and argyle sweaters, and more importantly singing holiday tunes, then you will love the Gap’s merry mix it carols. Chock full of stars from Rainn Wilson, to Flo Rida and Trey Songz, to Napoleon Dynamite star John Heder, to the Dixie Chicks, you can’t help but want to start making your list and checking it twice. After watching it a few times, the synchronicity of the music made me want to shop, jingle some bells with the three kings, dance with Rainn and Selma, and maybe even bake a few cookies. Next stop, decorating, wrapping and finding the mistletoe.

JEANS IN THE CITY

Dec 1, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Recession? Yes, but we will always have T-shirts and jeans. At least that is how the designer Tommy Hilfiger sees it. “Rich or poor, young or old and regardless of size and heritage, denim is for everyone and a staple,” said Hilfiger during a WWD interview. So, what better way to prove that point than exporting a little classic Americana to the shores of Italy. The designer opened a 3,500-square-foot retail space on the bustling corner of Corso Buenos Aires, Milan, which will house his entire jeans collection, as well as accessories and outwear. What makes the spot ideal besides the retail thoroughfare? The fabulous ground floor space, and its 10 large arched street-side widows that showcase all of the classic American-inspired pieces Hilfiger is so famous for. Grazie Bene Tommy!

Is there such a thing as being too tall? Not when you’re wearing over-the-knee boots. These Sergio Rossi boots stand tall when you wear them with a dress and leggings, but look just as fashionable folded over with your jeans tucked in.
