HOLMES AND YANG, THE BEGINNING

Nov 26, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Former Dawson’s Creek star? Check. Wife of uber star Tom Cruise? Check. Fashion designer? Maybe. Mrs. Holmes-Cruise has been showing up to important events dressed to the nines in her favorite new label, Holmes & Yang. Yes, that Holmes. The hinting at a possible fashion line began with the photograph seen round the world of the leather bodice and dark blue satin skirt number at the Tropic Thunder premier. Next, it was a photographic splash of the lace and cream one-piece number worn at the opening of her All My Sons premier. Then on a casual stroll in NYC, it was the sighting of Ms. Suri Cruise in a polka dot empire waist dress, since identified as a Holmes & Yang design. Currently, the Holmes & Yang line is a burgeoning fashion line that Katie designs with her stylist Jeanne Yang. However fashion rumors have been circulating wildly that TomKat is shopping the brand around, looking for a high-end fashion designer to partner with. What with sleek evening pieces, and children’s dresses, can diaper bags and handbags be far behind?

A TIME TO BE PROPR

What do you get when you mix together the style of a quirky Los Angeles actor/director and a popular folksy/rock ‘n’ roller? An eclectic, organic clothing line for men and women, with a built in celebrity following. Mr. Arquette, as you may or may not know, is married to actress Courtney Cox, best friend of Jennifer Aniston, and Mr. Harper, is married to Laura Dern, a noted actress in her own right. Their novice capsule collection, which debuted a few weeks ago at the Cox-Arquette household in Beverly Hills, is a wearable collection which targets everyone from South Central to Capri and St. Tropez. The line features breezy, ‘70s vibe, just roll up and throw in your suitcase separates like pleated empire waist flutter sleeve dresses, denim short suits, A-line sleeveless box pleat dresses, butter soft polo shirts with ink-colored bootcut denim pants, and classic long shorts paired with crisp white button downs. The line was designed by Arquette and Harper along with Penguin’s David Bedwell and Loden Dager’s Paul Marlow. The launch of Propr is a dream come true for Harper, prior to his current fame and the plethora of celebrity lines that exist today, he had tried his hand at designing a line of Western shirts in 1994, a line which never got off the ground. But from the looks of the line, finding an audience won’t be a problem, there is something for everyone from the Wall Street banker (well those that are left), to the Venice Beach skater dudes.

DEATH OF A CELEBRITY LINE

Aug 15, 2008 by Stephanie R.

We here at Couture have often scoffed at celebrities designing clothing lines. Truly, shouldn’t clothes be designed by people who have it in their blood from the embyro stage, or at the very least dressing paper dolls since preschool? Harsh I know, but we also have given kudos to a few who do it well, namely Jovovich-Hawk. Milla Jovovich and her design partner/model Carmen Hawk were spot-on with their fabrications, drape and that ‘I’m fabulously dressed but couldn’t be bothered making an effort’ elan. How sad are we here at Couture to report that Milla dropped the bomb in the September issue of Lucky magazine that her divine fashion line will be no more. “When one door closes... she mused.” Come on, how does one close a successful line sold in all of the best stores? Is this because of her little cherub? Is this because of the man that she had the cherub with? Well whatever the reason, I’m disappointed, no mad. Where will the Couture team get our silky boudoir ‘20s inspired dresses, our tiered daisy design spaghetti strap summer dresses, our silk faille tap pant shorts and belle short sleeve jackets (okay this one is a stretch)? Darn it woman, have you no feelings? Well, one can only hope and pray that the next door/window that does open will be a fashionable one. Well that and begin scouring the online and
offline universe for any Jovovich-Hawk creation you can find.

THE FOURTH TIME IS THE CHARM FOR FETISH

Or at least we hope so for rapper/actress Eve, who is relaunching her fashion line Festish for the fourth time in less than five years. The line got off to a rocky start during its initial launch in 2003 due to a revolving door of business partners and production troubles. But time lends itself to reflection, retrospection and learning from being burned by the design fires. So, understandably so, Fetish has hired a seasoned designer — Arnold Williams — to give the line a much needed design boost and continuity. Fans of Eve can expect the line to be chock full of trendy jeans,
impactful but subtle details as well as a smattering of the spot-on-trend embellishments. The new line up wil be carried at FetishCollection.com and Macy’s.

'STORKING' CELEBS

Was there something in the water last winter and this past spring? Because, damn, lots of celebs are pregnant or rumored to be pregnant. Of course some
are more obvious than others. Nicole Richie seems to have settled into impending motherhood better than expected. A glowing Cate Blanchett happily confirmed that she was in the early stages of her third pregnancy.

But some celebs aren't ready to confirm what we all know to be true. There have continued to be denials and slips of the tongue — her own mother speaking about twins and Roberto Cavalli publicly announcing last week that she had special needs &mdash and J. Lo's ever-increasing baby bump has still not been confirmed that it is, in fact, a baby bump (come on, we know Jenny from the Block wouldn't let herself go). At least a very happy Halle Berry is ecstatic --and vocal! -- about her baby she's expecting with her gorgeous Calvin Klein model boyfriend Gabriel Aubry. That'll be a baby whose looks will rival the Jolie-Pitts newcomer(s?). Diaper bag, anyone?
