FASHIONABLY FABULOUS - BECKY

Nov 3, 2008 by Stephanie_Sims

The Couture team is back with another of our 'eye on the internal fashion world of Zappos' videos, this time starring our very own Becky, fearless developer by day, stylista by night. Ms. Becky is a heady mix of '50s chic, '70s flair and a little power '80s thrown in. We love how she rocks her pencil skirts and uber high heels, her of-the-moment shorts, button up shirts and stilettos and the occasional fitted dress that says va-va without too much voom. Kudos, Becky.

In this video, Becky is wearing Taverniti jeans and Jessica Simpson shoes.

CHRISTIAN AUDIGIER, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN TOUCH

Or it would seem. His nightclub here in Las Vegas is said to be thriving, and we all love the Ed Hardy brand, so why shouldn't his selling of his vast empire in an economic downtown turn bring the $700 million asking price? That's right folks, Mr. Audigier is said to be looking to sell the entire lot, that is – ten brands, including Ed Hardy, and 92 licenses. Even with the economy at what it is currently, you can bet there are interested parties – 15 to be exact, according to WWD, who ran a story on the prospective sale in its October 16 edition. Even if he sells his stakes, hopefully he will continue to design or oversee the designs, (gasp) what would Ed Hardy look like without him?

His show was also the highlight of Wednesday's LA Fashion Week's shows. Looks like it's a good time to be Christian Audigier.

CHIC CHICAGO

Oct 28, 2008 by Stephanie_Sims

When the word “chic” is in the city’s name, you know it has to have some fashion sense. And it looks like New York and Paris no longer have a monopoly on haute couture – Chicago’s History Museum has a vintage couture exhibit: “Chic Chicago: Couture Treasures from the Chicago History Museum.” It features couture dresses from 1861 to 1996 – Chanel to Lanvin to Versace, as well as Pingat gowns from the Gilded Age. The exhibit will also show fashion-related films such as Unzipped, a documentary chronicling Isaac Mizrahi’s work after his mixed-reviewed 1993 show, and The Fashion Frontier, about the relationship between political statements and clothing.

The best part is it will be at the museum until July 2009. There’s plenty of time to check it out.

Ah, the 'style star', always on point, effortlessly turned out, the perfect "I don't care" strut, yes, this describes the darling Ms. Noel perfectly. Her look is always a sophisticated yet edgy chic. She sports elongated boyfriend sweaters belted with the de rigueur thin belt, menswear-inspired vests and skinny jeans, boho chic handbags and the magazine worthy, up-to-the-moment tousled waved hair. Like those who have come before her in our column, she deserves a 'fashionable A-plus!'

The divine Ms. Brooke is one of the Couture Team's favorite 'stylistas'. Her style is always fresh, relaxed with a splash of trend thrown in. B rocks fabulous jeans - bootcut or skinny - layered T-shirts, cutting-edge organic jewelry, sweet sundresses for her excursions to Costa Rica and the Caymans, not to mention the girl can rock a scarf. Ms. B, our hat's off to your organic, relaxed style!

We here at Couture love fashion, as you already know, but we especially love great fashion presentation. Another of our fashion favorites, due to her consistent ability to effortlessly pull off a 'rocker chic' aesthetic, is Janelle G. She rocks empire waist frocks, a plethora of skinny jeans, drapey strapless tops and enviable leather cut out sky high heels. Ms. Janelle, we love the way you rock it!

FROM MINDFREAK TO BODYFREAK WITH CLOTHING LINE

Criss Angel, the magician of Mindfreak fame, will work with Dussault Apparel to produce clothing and accessories for Angel's new line, MF13. No one knows what MF13 stands for just yet, but doesn't it sound like yet another Terminator movie? My bet is that it likely stands for Mindfreak 13, but who knows.

Judging from Angel's style, we should probably expect skulls, leather and patterned fedoras. Dussault will also design and produce T-shirts for Angel's Cirque du Soleil production showing at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas October 10th. Spiky hair and eyeliner optional.

Fringe reminds some of days in the Ol' West, clearly designers drew inspiration from those days for Fall 2008. Fringe, seen on scarves and bags, above, seems to be making a comeback. What do our readers think? Is this trend too cowgirl? Or do you love the boho chic about it? Tell us, we'd love to know.

WEEKLY BABBLE - PROJECT RUNWAY

Jul 31, 2008 by Stephanie_Sims

There was another episode of Runway last night, which means we’ve got another rundown of it for you here. We also are priviledged to have another opinion of the episode. John Fanok, Brand Designer here at Zappos, gives us his thoughts.

The challenge: Get inspired by New York City at night, and design something that reflects that. Flashback to Season 2 episode: get inspired by New York City during the day challenge…

The winner:
SS: Kenley was channeling Mad Men/early ‘60s style (clearly, her personal style) among other trends. Her winning design, a printed bubble-shaped mini dress with long sleeves, impressed the judges with its shape and abstract print. Prints are a major trend for fall 2008, congratulations Kenley.

JF: What's with that balloon on her hip? Looks like a goiter, ew! I don't agree with the winning decision but what do I know? I thought Leanne made a great comeback and learned to edit, edit ,edit. Leanne captured the essence of the NYC photograph that inspired the design.

The loser:
SS: You know, Emily’s dress really wasn’t that bad – basic black asymmetrical dress with a T-shaped orange and yellow ruffle up the front – but it was boring in comparison with the others. Other designers like Stella’s metallic vest and skinny gray jeans and Korto’s all black pantsuit were equally boring due to their monochromatic color scheme and all too familiar fashion shapes, but were better executed. Every episode someone must be auf’d, so the judges had to say Auf Wiedersehen to Emily. Come on, when Nina gives you the condescending smile, you know you’re a goner.

JF: Loser and rightfully so. She may have captured the image in the photo, but it was poorly executed. Keith skated by and he had better watch out. His piece was innovative but the model looked like she was wearing a paper bag, she had no curves.

Dear readers do you have any predictions for who will last ‘til the end? I think Suede will go far, but I wish he would stop talking about himself in third person. John thinks Kelli and Blayne will make the top three, too. We welcome your opinions, so write back and let us know.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT - KATE SPADE

May 28, 2008 by Stephanie R.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-1736-1954/katespade350.jpg

I’m sure that Katherine Noel Brosnahan, now known as Kate Spade, never imagined from her humble beginnings in Kansas City, Missouri, going on to study Journalism, that she would someday invent a handbag that would launch a thousand imitations and would soon become the staple of her still flourishing Kate Spade international empire. Kate, while working as a Senior Fashion Editor/Head of Accessories at Mademoiselle magazine discovered the consistent lack of stylish and practical handbags in the marketplace. She would visit local flea markets for inspiration, and fabric swatches which led to the creation of her initial prototype — the black, stain resistant fabric handbag with dual handles, which officially launched her label in 1993. She quit the magazine in the early ‘90s and the rest as they say is history. Kate Spade, along with her now husband, Andy Spade, have built the Kate Spade empire into a brand which consists of handbags, shoes, stationery, personal organizers, address books, beauty products, perfume, pajamas, eyewear and home which was launched in 2004.

We here at Couture are never to be out done and were able to procure Kate’s shoes and handbags, which one third of the Couture team can’t ever be without. Our faves are: Kate Spade's Hera shoes, Kate's Anguila Flat Ava Clutch and Kate Spade's Becca Sunglasses.

THE TIES THAT BIND!

May 16, 2008 by Stephanie R.

LiLo — that’s Ms. Linsay Lohan to you — will be the new face of fashion lifestyle brand Fornarina, making for a hopefully strong and trouble-free pairing. The news was revealed a la Ms. Lindsay herself at Fornarina Urban Beauty Show at the Carrousel du Louvre on Monday in Paris. It was reported that the crowd was 2,000 strong, whether that was due to the brand, the curiosity of Lindsay or both, it is not known. The first pictures of Lindsay fronting the brand break in 2009.

Thankfully for us here at Zappos.com, it won’t matter when the ads break, as we already carry the brand. Hear that LiLo? We are already in the know, thank you very much.
