There is a funny thing about life and the winding, wondrous road we take on the path to romantic happiness, it’s called the dating pool. At one time or another, we have all waded in and attempted to navigate these murky waters of love. Along the way there are funny stories, misadventures and mixed signals, as one attempts to understand the opposite sex. The movie, He’s Just Not That Into You, lends the audience a comedic lens into the dating rituals and married lives of its eclectic characters looking for love.

ACNE AND LANVIN, A DENIM LOVE MATCH

Dec 23, 2008 by Stephanie R.

L'amour, l'amour... There are some fashion collaborations that are truly a match made in heaven, and the denim collection by Alber Elbaz of Lanvin with Acne Jeans is one such match. The 28-piece collection that hit stores and online this past Thursday, lives up to all the hyperbole surrounding the launch. There are sweet sleeveless tops with bow-tie fronts, classic blazers, 5-pocket jeans, chino-esque trousers, elegant strapless empire-waist dresses, chic shirtdresses and divine double-breasted tie-front trench coats. Due to this being an Alber designed collection, all of the couture details are accounted for. I love the epaulette-inspired shoulder details, the gathered waist/cuff smock top, and the decidedly French multi-pocket tie-front shirtdress. It would seem no chic detail was left unturned. Oui!

It is said that everyone has a signature piece, for the 'modern hatter' Jarett it is definitely an edgy fedora angled just so. The best way to describe Monsieur Jarett's style is a relaxed elegant one, mixed with a tinge of island influences. Throw in his love of chunky jewelry, funky Robert Wayne pointy toe shoes, Christian Audigier tees, and JM or I.N.C. dark rinse denim and it is a fashionable cornucopia. So Jarett, we tip our Couture fedora to you for always fashionably holding it down.

THE SCENE: Calling the families to get out of holiday obligations.

Ah, home for the holidays... we all remember them well. You and your beloved wish for a tropical excursion, where you can lie on the beach, sip Mai Tai cocktails, and watch the sunsets. Then, bam! One phone call and you are snapped out of your fantasy into the reality of family obligations. Now, of course, it does not really have to be that bad; there is a certain comfort in embracing the family call and soldiering through it. That is why the film Four Christmases, a delightful new romantic comedy, is the perfect pre-holiday antidote for the upcoming holiday season. We may not be able to get out of our responsibilities, but we sure can laugh at seeing how other people deal with it on the big screen. Four Christmases - In Theaters November 26th!

THE SARTORIAL STATUS SYMBOL RETURNS

Dec 5, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Selvedge denim, Long an underground denim-head’s whispered secret, has now made a triumphant return and gone main stream. Yes, even if you never noticed that white seam exposed on an upturned cuff, you have probably heard of it. What started as a jean phenomenon in the early '90s with cult jean makers like Evisu, has now reached the masses with help in part from retailers like J.Crew’s selvedge brand. For a better understanding on its importance, it helps to think of selvedge denim like an estate wine with limited bottling and distribution, an indigo brew of sorts. Traditionally peddled to men only, selvedge is now finding a home in a woman’s closet as much as a man’s thanks in part to the boyfriend jean trend. The name in itself has significance, as it means self-edge, referring to the way the fabric is woven. Selvedge, was traditionally made with shuttle looms which passed a continuous thread back and forth, where the white thread looped back into the blue, a solid, white edge was formed. The shuttle looms were sold off to the Japanese in the 1950s/60s and ceased production here. This of course explains the cult-like following of the thick, rough-hewn Japanese denim that has global retailers making pilgrimages to denim shrine Hinoya Plus Mart in Tokyo. What is even better than that? Zappos carries it. Yay! Couture’s pick: Evisu Embroidered Brush Stroke Jean.

Ah, the musical, lyrical, edgy cool Mr. Phil. Stylish Brand Designer by day, musician, father and husband by night. Phil rocks the sweater vibe, brings an understated cool to the sweater vest, works multiple faux hawk dos, styles hot kicks, and works vintage levi denim like no one else. But perhaps what is most wonderful about Mr. Phil is not just his style sense, but his humility and humanity. Thank you Phil, we are loving your style.

JEANS IN THE CITY

Recession? Yes, but we will always have T-shirts and jeans. At least that is how the designer Tommy Hilfiger sees it. “Rich or poor, young or old and regardless of size and heritage, denim is for everyone and a staple,” said Hilfiger during a WWD interview. So, what better way to prove that point than exporting a little classic Americana to the shores of Italy. The designer opened a 3,500-square-foot retail space on the bustling corner of Corso Buenos Aires, Milan, which will house his entire jeans collection, as well as accessories and outwear. What makes the spot ideal besides the retail thoroughfare? The fabulous ground floor space, and its 10 large arched street-side widows that showcase all of the classic American-inspired pieces Hilfiger is so famous for. Grazie Bene Tommy!

SHOES FOR ALL MANKIND

Nov 26, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Were you looking for just the right shoe to accessorize your Seven For All Mankind jeans, or any jean for that matter? Well, the search is finally over. The Seven jean company entered the shoe making business with a licensing agreement with Schwartz & Benjamin Inc. to produce a small shoe collection for the brand. The company started this summer with five initial women’s styles sold exclusively at the jean maker’s retail store locations, and debuted a full line this fall. The styles include a wooden heel wedge, a platform heel, a gladiator sandal, a ballet flat, a suede bootie, a slouch flat boot, and a knee-length leather boot. Considering these recession times, the line's price point is a draw as well, with styles ranging in price from $150 to $350. Why choose Schwartz & Benjamin? Probably because they know a thing or two about making shoes, as they produce shoes for Kate Spade, Diane Von Furstenberg and Michael Kors. Whatever the reason for Seven making shoes, I’m all for it. After all, it takes a lot of work to find the right shoe to match the right jean, no?

LOOKS OF THE WEEK - JONATHAN

Ah, the fabulous Mr. Jonathan, where does one begin to describe this fashion visionary's sense of style. He has the classic tastes that evoke images of a bygone era, from his bespoke jackets, to his crisp tailored and embroidered shirts, right down to his enviable cufflink collection and vintage watch chains. The Couture team finds him to be that wonderful combination of old Hollywood - think Robert Mitchum/Humphrey Bogart - polish mixed with a relaxed, yet edgy modernity. Whether he is perfectly turned out in cuffed denim, a dress shirt and funky shoes, or a suit jacket, tie and classic jewelry pieces, his style sense always deserves a fashionable yes!

Ah, the 'style star', always on point, effortlessly turned out, the perfect "I don't care" strut, yes, this describes the darling Ms. Noel perfectly. Her look is always a sophisticated yet edgy chic. She sports elongated boyfriend sweaters belted with the de rigueur thin belt, menswear-inspired vests and skinny jeans, boho chic handbags and the magazine worthy, up-to-the-moment tousled waved hair. Like those who have come before her in our column, she deserves a 'fashionable A-plus!'

PIECE OF ME

Sep 17, 2008 by Stephanie_Sims

No I am not speaking of the ‘lifestyles of the rich and famous’, nor of ‘that Britney shameless’ but of that ‘xtra, xtra, this just in,’ a new tattered, torn denim spin. The look of which I speak, is on full display as Ms. Spears dances around in an original pair of Destroyed Brand jeans in her VMA winning video Piece of Me, a look which is fast becoming a small trend in the denim kingdom. The style, a bleach-splattered, ‘drive over them a few times with your car wheels’, is a resurgence of its edgy predecessor from the early ‘90s. However, the Piece of Me video is not the only one leading the ripped charge, designer Christopher Kane paired ripped denim with lady-like blouses for his Spring 2008 runway collection, and denim maker Destroyed Brand, takes a more stylized approach to their torn designs with spray paint bleaching and strategically placed horizontal rips. If you are like me, or any one else who has ever owned, worn or designed a pair knows, the rips grow with every washing, so do watch your strategic placement. The best news of all? This time around the look comes in multiple washes and variations on the rip theme. Yay!

We here at Couture love fashion, as you already know, but we especially love great fashion presentation. Another of our fashion favorites, due to her consistent ability to effortlessly pull off a 'rocker chic' aesthetic, is Janelle G. She rocks empire waist frocks, a plethora of skinny jeans, drapey strapless tops and enviable leather cut out sky high heels. Ms. Janelle, we love the way you rock it!

LEVI JAPAN ROCKS THE SKELETON HAND

Jul 30, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Why does it seem like all of the denim that comes out of Japan or is created for the Japanese audience is cooler than most things we see here in the States? Levi, an American brand since the late ‘20s, has created a funky, two-rinse jean with painted skeleton hands on the pocket. Of course, you may ask why anyone would want skeleton hands on their pockets, which is a legitimate question, but this is Japan, and they are open to all things fashion. Just think, if you are the type of guy who walks around with your hands in your pocket all the time then this jean is perfect for you, kind of like a pseudo X-ray on the outside. The jeans come in a dark rinse as well as a distressed rinse that seems to have a slight metallic wash and are the standard bootcut width. They are not available in the States or Europe yet, but keep your eye out for them on levi.com and then get your hands on a pair.

THE CANDIE GIRL

Jul 29, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Where does one begin? Every starlet in Hollywood these days is either a model/actress, actress/model, actress/designer or actress/singer, no? Or so it would seem. On Wednesday, July 16, the Candie’s brand and Hayden Panettiere took over PerezHilton.com to promote the new Candie’s ad campaign and to um, promote the new single by Ms. Panettiere. Now I am not hating on anyone expressing their talent and/or gifts, but when did it become passe to just be good at one thing? But I digress. The ads feature Hayden rocking a metallic jacket, black jeans and high-heels with a side-lying microphone in hand with her lips apart as though singing, obviously that should have been my first clue as to what lay ahead. The ads and Candie’s logo were all over the site as well as montages of Ms. Panettiere’s face, and low and behold in the middle of that garish pink background was a large video screen window, all set for the reader/viewer to just hit play. On comes island-esque music (reminiscent of another blonde one-hit wonder), the oh-ooo-oh, maybe you need a wake-up call, and lovely images of Hayden, doing the one-handed microphone grasping warbling (more oh ooo oh...) that most starlets do these days. All in all, the song was not that bad, it had a catchy beat and refrain, and as for the outfits, the clothes were cool.

If Couture were to have been consulted on the video we would have made the following suggestions: Moschino metallic bubble hem mini dress with an accompanying D&G Dolce & Gabbana Flat Strap grey belt paired with Moschino Cheap and Chic black retro ankle boots for her strut into the club; John Varvatos for Converse bronze metallic leather bomber jacket (silver and washed gold are so overdone) left open, C’N’C Costume National five-pocket style black skinny jeans, Crystal Rock’s Rockabilly black tee with Giuseppe Zanotti handpainted booties for crooning on stage to the crowd; C’N’C Costume National grey racer back sleeveless elongated tank with iridescent palettes, Just Cavaili grey distressed jeans with Moschino red platform gathered tie-front pumps for the rolling around the floor number; for strutting a la Britney, Studio Gabriella Rocha black satin deep v-neck dress with draped sides worn with DSquared opulent lace, beaded and faux jeweled platform ankle-tie sandal (black wig optional).

Hey, they did not ask Couture, but I thought I should put the style tips out there any way.
