CHRISTIAN AUDIGIER, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN TOUCH

Oct 31, 2008 by Stephanie_Sims

Or it would seem. His nightclub here in Las Vegas is said to be thriving, and we all love the Ed Hardy brand, so why shouldn't his selling of his vast empire in an economic downtown turn bring the $700 million asking price? That's right folks, Mr. Audigier is said to be looking to sell the entire lot, that is – ten brands, including Ed Hardy, and 92 licenses. Even with the economy at what it is currently, you can bet there are interested parties – 15 to be exact, according to WWD, who ran a story on the prospective sale in its October 16 edition. Even if he sells his stakes, hopefully he will continue to design or oversee the designs, (gasp) what would Ed Hardy look like without him?

His show was also the highlight of Wednesday's LA Fashion Week's shows. Looks like it's a good time to be Christian Audigier.

THE FOURTH TIME IS THE CHARM FOR FETISH

Jul 31, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Or at least we hope so for rapper/actress Eve, who is relaunching her fashion line Festish for the fourth time in less than five years. The line got off to a rocky start during its initial launch in 2003 due to a revolving door of business partners and production troubles. But time lends itself to reflection, retrospection and learning from being burned by the design fires. So, understandably so, Fetish has hired a seasoned designer — Arnold Williams — to give the line a much needed design boost and continuity. Fans of Eve can expect the line to be chock full of trendy jeans,
impactful but subtle details as well as a smattering of the spot-on-trend embellishments. The new line up wil be carried at FetishCollection.com and Macy’s.

KARL LAGERFELD ON THE ROAD

Jun 20, 2008 by Stephanie R.

The man with the golden touch and fingerless gloves, Karl Lagerfeld, designer of Chanel, Fendi, Lagerfeld Gallery, product campaign photographer, writer, has just added road safety to his lofty resume. One does not think of road safety as a hot or sexy commodity, nor do you associate the Kaiser with a fluorescent yellow safety vest, but it is a collaboration that is underway for summertime. Lagerfeld will appear in the road safety ads in France with his typical dour expression, white ponytail and dark glasses, all the while sporting the yellow safety vest encouraging drivers to equip themselves with safety vests with this simple statement, "It's yellow, it's ugly, it doesn't match anything, but it can save your life." But fear not, Karl remains his stylish self, pairing the safety vest with a black suit, crisp white shirt and bow tie.

ADIEU YVES

Jun 2, 2008 by Stephanie R.

The legendary couturier and trailblazer Yves Saint Laurent died at his home in Paris late Sunday after a prolonged illness. The designer, considered by many to be one of the greatest designers in history, began his 50 year-plus career at the tender age of 21, when he blazed an assured trail by replacing the original legend, couturier Christian Dior himself.

Yves would go on to become a beloved icon, known for shaking up the buttoned-up tight collars of Parisian couture with street influences and seductive nuances like the Le Smoking Jacket atop a bare chest, the menswear-inspired tuxedo for women, the 'into the wild' look of the lace-up safari top open down to the navel (who could forget Veruska standing out in the wilds of the African savannah with a safari top, big floppy hat and a rifle behind her head?), the famous white suit that Bianca Jagger wore to her wedding to Mick and countless others. Where would modern day ready-to-wear be without him? He was considered to be single-handedly responsible for its creation with the 1966 launch of his Rive Gauche collection that reflected his distinctive design aesthetic, sense of color and artistry of cut. So powerful was he in the fashion world once upon a time, that if he changed a hemline slightly or shifted the placement of a waistline, it would send the fashion world into a frenzy and his changes would ripple around the world. The designer would go on to create a plethora of fragrances as well as a very successful YSL Beaute beauty line. It was a sad day when he retired in 2002, an end of an era really, but today in the fashion world a very bright light has been permanently dimmed. Yves you will be missed!

I’m sure that Katherine Noel Brosnahan, now known as Kate Spade, never imagined from her humble beginnings in Kansas City, Missouri, going on to study Journalism, that she would someday invent a handbag that would launch a thousand imitations and would soon become the staple of her still flourishing Kate Spade international empire. Kate, while working as a Senior Fashion Editor/Head of Accessories at Mademoiselle magazine discovered the consistent lack of stylish and practical handbags in the marketplace. She would visit local flea markets for inspiration, and fabric swatches which led to the creation of her initial prototype — the black, stain resistant fabric handbag with dual handles, which officially launched her label in 1993. She quit the magazine in the early ‘90s and the rest as they say is history. Kate Spade, along with her now husband, Andy Spade, have built the Kate Spade empire into a brand which consists of handbags, shoes, stationery, personal organizers, address books, beauty products, perfume, pajamas, eyewear and home which was launched in 2004.

We here at Couture are never to be out done and were able to procure Kate’s shoes and handbags, which one third of the Couture team can’t ever be without. Our faves are: Kate Spade's Hera shoes, Kate's Anguila Flat Ava Clutch and Kate Spade's Becca Sunglasses.

PROFESSOR CAVALLI?

May 28, 2008 by Stephanie R.

Yes, it would seem so. It was reported by Fashion Wire Daily that Roberto Cavalli will follow in the famous footsteps of such luminaries as Tom Ford, Bill Clinton, Anna Wintour and the President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, in giving a lecture at Oxford University, as part of their Oxford Union Society’s student encounter lecture series. The university arranges for the students to encounter scholars and leading figures in film, politics, the arts and fashion. Um, my college did not do that, why? As if designing fabulous collections, hotels/nightclubs and accessories were not enough for Roberto.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT - COLE HAAN

In 1928 Trafton Cole and Eddie Haan designed the first Cole Haan shoe. It was Chicago, the jazz age. Quality was everything — and style, like the sound, was smooth and sophisticated. So goes the intro on the Cole Haan website.

Today, like its early beginnings, creativity, luxury, technology and sophistication still reigns supreme in the company’s approach to design. Cole Haan has grown significantly since its first pair of shoes to include clothing, small leather goods, belts, luxury outerwear, watches and fabulous handbags. The company had been collaborating with Nike with their air technology for shoes and Nike eventually purchased the company outright in the late ‘80s. Of course, here at Couture.Zappos.com we carry a vast array of the Haan products. Our faves: the Air Ricki Sandal (women), the Air Granada Sport Ox (men), the Whitford Shave Kit (men) and the Village Soft East/West Triple Zip Bag (women).

THE TIES THAT BIND!

LiLo — that’s Ms. Linsay Lohan to you — will be the new face of fashion lifestyle brand Fornarina, making for a hopefully strong and trouble-free pairing. The news was revealed a la Ms. Lindsay herself at Fornarina Urban Beauty Show at the Carrousel du Louvre on Monday in Paris. It was reported that the crowd was 2,000 strong, whether that was due to the brand, the curiosity of Lindsay or both, it is not known. The first pictures of Lindsay fronting the brand break in 2009.

Thankfully for us here at Zappos.com, it won’t matter when the ads break, as we already carry the brand. Hear that LiLo? We are already in the know, thank you very much.

What's yellow, green, red and white all over? These fabulous stilettos from Guiseppe Zanotti, silly. You are able to walk many city blocks in them, they make your legs look longer than the fifty-foot woman (okay, maybe four inches longer), they elicit whistles wherever you turn. Yes, we love them so. But don't take our word for it. Buy them, try them and whistle while you strut.
