ECO GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK

Very few companies have the storied history, longevity and forward-moving vision that Ferragamo does. Known for their exquisite shoes and luxury handbags, the company has now ventured into the future with their new Eco Ferragamo collection. The line features handbags made from nontoxic tanning techniques, and tannins made from tree bark with handwoven hemp used as a durable liner alternative. Combine these eco techniques with the company's craftsmanship and you have a luxury, biodegradable and extremely stylish alternative to leather handbags. The line's price point is not necessarily recession-friendly though, as it rivals its leather brethren with a range of $1,200 to $1,900 depending on the style - small totes to maxi hobos. The line is not due to debut until February '09, so that gives you plenty of time to save up for one. Okay, maybe not.

Trends are dictated by many mediums, notably film and television. With the success of Mad Men many trends have emerged from it. There is the Don Draper effect - manicured hair, crisp white collared shirts and cigs, the resurgence of the hour glass silhouette, crystal encrusted brooches and of course, the exaggerated collar. Couture is loving this Ali Ro '50s-inspired, exaggerated collar ponte knit dress with attached hip belt. Give it the full Mad Men effect by pairing it with a crystal brooch and colored stiletto heels.

The fabulous Alexander McQueen knows the way to a woman's heart is through her favorite color and definitely through her sole. Perfect with a black sheath and hot pink skinny belt, with an exaggerated collar knee length dress, or with stovepipe jeans paired with a ruffle-front crisp white shirt.

FILIPPA K'S SAN FRAN DEBUT

Whether or not you are a fan of San Francisco, and how could you not be, there are a lot of great things about the city to be grateful for. There are the wonderful hotels, fabulous dining, great wine bars, the Castro, and now the Swedish retailer Filippa K’s first U.S. flagship store. The 2,500 square foot space reflects more than just the Swedish retailer’s fashion sense, but also the minimalist aesthetic that Sweden is known for — clean, open design, lots of windows and lots of wood. The store is equitably split between mens' wear and womens' wear, with a 20 foot natural log table running down the center acting as the gender divide. The brand Filippa K, not to be confused with its fast-fashion brethren H&M, is best known for their reasonably priced, quality clothing. The designs are focused on cuts and materials, rather than trend cycles, producing items that amortize beautifully into anyone’s current wardrobe. Think perfectly cut trousers, blazers, effortless shirtdresses, military-styled jackets, crisp white blouses, denim and everyday tees. So if you are in San Francisco, any where near Kearny Street, do drop in.

A shirt, is a shirt, is a shirt, right? Wrong! There are the classic button downs, the logo-emblazoned versions, and then there is the classic silhouette given a little graphic edge. We are loving this C'N'C Costume National Logo Print Front Button Up. Pair it will dark rinse jeans or black dress pants, paired with a funky lace up shoe or boot. Um, to maintain that edgy cool, leave the shirt untucked.

RAG AND BONE IS STEPPING OUT

Dec 30, 2008 by Stephanie R.

First it was jeans, then a full blown clothing line, shoes would have to be right around the corner, right? Of course. It is either shoes or handbags when it comes to expanding your clothing line into accessories these days. For Rag & Bone, shoes were a natural fit for their hip line with a cult-like following from London to the West Coast. With a debut of no-fail women's styles of detailed ballerina flats, tailored loafers, and slipper-esque lace-up oxfords, how could they not succeed? The line, although very hip and chic, is not a cheap one. With a price point starting at $330 and topping out at $515, if you are like me - a newly formed recessionista - you have to think long and hard before buying anything. One ponders if it will it live up to the clothing line? Will they prove to have longevity, like other more established classics? The answer to both is yes. Marcus Wainwright and David Neville - co-owners and co-designers of Rag & Bone - are both New Yorkers now (formerly of London), and accustomed to walking most of the time, a motivating factor in the designs of the shoes. The label focused on classic silhouettes that would sell well regardless of the economic climate, and used all-natural materials and custom lasts to ensure that each shoe was both comfortable, flexible and beautiful. Although I am still closely analyzing every purchase I plan to make, these seem like the right splurge and perfect keep sake.
