Celebrity Style: Because Prints aren't Plain

Sep 30, 2008 by Tiffany B

It seems like prints are here to stay for celebrities. There are several different prints that all of Hollywood has been wearing. On everything from dresses to even shoes, prints are definitely in this season as a celebrity fashion trend.

Celebrities are sporting one surprising print: plaid. Now, you may think of the old, plaid, flannel shirts that are popular with lumberjacks, but this is an updated plaid look. The key to wearing plaid is including some sort of feminine touch. It should not look like you borrowed your boyfriend's old flannel. Vanessa Hudgens was a great example of this trend when she wore a fitted plaid dress that showed off her curves. Other celebrities indulging in the plaid trend are Lauren Conrad and Ellen Pompeo. If you are not sure about wearing plaid, start off small and wear a plaid scarf with your jeans and tee. You also may want to avoid the plaid mini-skirt, as you may give off the trampy school-girl look.

A not-so-surprising print that is popular with celebrities is a sophisticated floral. Floral prints are still in style for the fall, but you have to choose the right print. The floral prints for fall are richer and deeper in color, such as purples and dark pinks. Kristen Davis and Reese Witherspoon have worn floral dresses, which were feminine and flirty. If you are not comfortable wearing a whole floral dress, opt for a shirt or even a floral silk scarf. Floral clothing pieces are a great way to show off your feminine side and keep things light going into fall. Celebrity designer Roberto Cavalli has been designing for this trend. He made both dresses and blouses in sophisticated floral patterns, which celebrities have worn. With this celebrity trend, you want to avoid any floral patterns that look like baby or little girl attire. Make sure your floral pattern is sophisticated and modern.

Fashion Show of the Month: Seam Collective Presents Phenomenon

Sep 30, 2008 by Nancy L.

Some of the most innovative ideas in fashion shows lately have come from charity events. One fashion show I'm really looking forward to was conceived by Seam Collective, an initiative that matches female designers whose styles complement each other with their ideal customer, the chic, urban boutique shopper. These designers and their ideal customer have heart, though, as they're now working hand in hand with Women Rising, a Hudson County based charity that serves women and their families in Jersey City and the surrounding communities, allowing them to achieve self-sufficiency and live safe, fulfilling and productive lives through social services, economic development and advocacy services.

Seam Collective is presenting Fenomenon, a fashion show whose proceeds benefit Women Rising, at the Canco Lofts in Jersey City on Saturday, October 25, 2008. Fenomenon will also incorporate a dance party with DJ Jen Johnson. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with a complimentary wine bar until 8 p.m., when the runway show will start. Other entertainment includes interactive photo shoots, burlesque dancers and visual art.

Designers showing at Fenomenon include Elizabeth Rynish, a founder of the Seam Collective, who primarily designs women's dresses; Deepti Moti Babani, whose Indian heritage is a strong influence on her designs; Kattina Hilton, whose unique specialty is well-constructed and sexy one-piece swimsuits; Annie Lim, who focuses on clean-lined, wearable sportswear separates; Elizabeth Kosich, who designs high-fashion knitwear bikinis and loungewear; Shiana, an alumni of Ebony Fashion Fair who designs elegant evening wear; and Bieja-Flor, a mother-daughter team who produce designer jeans with a Brazilian body-conscious aesthetic.

The concept of Seam Collective is to present female designers who excel in a particular fashion niche together, so that this ideal customer, an affluent young professional woman, can utilize this seamless shopping experience to fill all her wardrobe needs at once. Fashion designers are often criticized for excelling in one area above others ("She's just a dress designer" is the kiss of death from reviewers), but if we're honest, most of them do anyway, so why not be upfront about it? This is one fashion show where I'll genuinely want to shop.

Evolution of Clothing: Out of the Trenches

Sep 29, 2008 by Racheline M.

Like many other fall and winter weather choices, today's fashionable trench coat is military in origin. Lightweight and rain-resistant, it was created as an alternative for officers and other ranked personnel during World War I, which was, of course, dominated by trench warfare. The coat is somewhat common; however, it is often easy to forget its origin, even though many of the details we consider hallmarks of the trench coat's style actually originated as military practicalities for the display of insignia and the carrying of equipment and weapons.

Military clothes have always had a presence in civilian fashion, usually because they are retained after war both for durability and as an indicator of status as a veteran or survivor. The trench coat was no different, and because its use had been restricted to those of rank, it quickly morphed into an indicator of wealth and sophistication. Civilian versions of the trench coat for both men and women began to be produced between the two world wars, and the military version of the coat remained in use during World War II, although in more variants as more countries added similar garments to their uniform options.

After WWII, the trench coat's trendiness really took off, and the coat became a staple of fashion in both books and films, particularly the detective genre. Perhaps most surprising, though, is the way the trench coat has been embraced by various alternative youth fashion movements for decades.

The trench coat was popular with the mods in the 1960s and is often seen in both the goth and heavy metal scenes (although usually in longer, black versions more accurately known as dusters). In more mainstream fashion, Sex in the City's Carrie also popularized the trench coat for women by making it sexy and flirty. For a coat that started in battle, the trench coat has had a surprising fashion history that is only likely to continue.

Fashion Show of the Week: Paris Ready to Wear

Sep 27, 2008 by Nancy L.

The Paris Ready To Wear (Pret-a-Porter) fashion shows will be held from September 27 to October 5, and one of the most closely watched shows will be Yves Saint Laurent, taking place at the Grand Palais on October 2. Although Stefano Pilati has been designing for YSL since 2004, this will be his first Parisian collection out from under the shadow of Yves Saint Laurent himself, who died in June 2008.

New York Fashion Week was filled with tributes to YSL, who was known for his slouchy silhouette and elegant appropriation of menswear. Tom Ford, who designed the collection until 2004, ignored this meme in favor of the sexy siren look he perfected for Gucci, but his worldview was met with disfavor by the Yves Saint Laurent customer. Pilati, however, has stayed closer to the mandate he's been given.

His Autumn/Winter 2008 collection featured menswear-inspired separates in neutral monochrome, with subtle shots of color like cobalt blue and sunshine yellow to alleviate the seriousness of the look. The waist and hips were a major focal point, with high-waist pants accented by narrow belts, color blocking, or ingenious cutouts in their matching jackets. Skirts and pants both belled downwards to echo the cocoon shape of the coats, allowing Pilati to present sophisticated but flattering lines. Tactile but potentially dour fabrics such as flannel, velvet, leather and tweed were accessorized with punk rock dog collars, severe haircuts and black lipstick, as if the youngest daughter in an English manor had dressed in the dark, grabbing half of her own clothing and half of her mother's. My favorite look was a high-collared brown velvet jacket with prominent zippers mixed with an asymmetrical black leather zippered skirt. It sounds odd in the telling, but it was a collection you not only wanted to look at, you wanted to wear.

I believe Yves Saint Laurent would truly be proud of his namesake of a sort. After all, he got his start at 17 when he took over design duties for Christian Dior.

Evolution of Clothing: Capri Pants

Sep 27, 2008 by Racheline M.

Capri pants, which have enjoyed a prolonged popularity over the last several years, were first invented just after World War II and had their first surge of popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s. While capris themselves are a relatively new invention, they descend from a long history of calf-length pants.

Like many of today's popular women's fashions, capri pants can be traced to early menswear including the formfitting breeches that were popular in the Baroque period and through the early 1800s. These pants, which ended just below the knee, were worn with socks designed to showcase the male leg as an object of beauty during a time in which women's legs were always covered.

As men's pants came down beginning in the mid-19th century and women's hemlines rose at the beginning of the 20th, a shapely leg went from a male beauty requirement to a female one, and as women increasingly wore trousers, especially as women joined the work force and war effort in the 1940s, it became logical that pants should be invented that would show off the leg.

Capri pants also have cousins in the pedal pusher, a female pant of the same length that is usually cuffed, and knickerbockers (often shortened somewhat confusingly to knickers, which in British English refer to women's underwear), which were baggy pants young men and boys wore in the early 20th century.

Capri pants are clothing's perfect compromise. Easy and casual with flats, sandals or athletic shoes, capri pants in fancier fabrics can also be dressed up with ease, simply by adding a pair of high heels and a well-fitted blouse for either a retro or modern look. It is important that capri pants be at the correct length, to accentuate the swell of the calf; the wrong length can make the leg look stocky instead of shapely and can create the illusion of reduced height.

The Importance of Clothing in Film: She's a Maniac, Maniac!

Sep 24, 2008 by Racheline M.

While 1983's Flashdance may seem like a bit of cheesy 80s nostalgia now, it significantly influenced fashion at the time. With the resurgence of 1980s-inspired fashions, Flashdance continues to have an impact today.

The story of a young woman who works in a steel mill during the day and at a strip club at night, while dreaming of becoming a professional dancer of an entirely more respectable sort as she vies for entrance into a dance conservatory, Flashdance was one of many dance-themed pop culture moments of the 1980s. Television shows like Fame and an aerobics craze exemplified by Olivia Newton John's Let's Get Physical, helped popularize dance clothes as a part of mainstream fashion.

Flashdance helped bring legwarmers and leggings into mainstream fashion and paired them with everything from high heels to ballet flats and even the more logical sneakers. Additionally, the film helped popularize other forms of dancewear outside the dance studio such as the brightly colored leotards that were also becoming a common part of many women's wardrobes with the aerobics boom.

Flashdance's most significant fashion contribution, however, was probably the distressed, over-sized sweatshirt, which featured a cutoff neckline revealing one shoulder and often had cuts and slashes in other places. Shirts could be bought in this condition at hefty prices in many department stores and boutiques, while some savvy buyers often distressed their own. Gray jersey and other sweatshirt-like material became popular for high-fashion clothes and were heavily featured in at least one line from Norma Kamali. Wide belts designed to emphasize the waist also came into fashion with Flashdance's help.

In this decade, there has been a resurgence in dance fashion. Much of this is attributable to 1980s nostalgia, as well as a bevy of new dance films that combine street dance with professional aspirations that have come on the scene such as Take the Lead and Step Up. While color combinations and the ideal silhouette for a dancer have changed somewhat since Jennifer Beals starred in Flashdance the body conscious clothes and casual but calculated layering of the look remain popular.

Fashion Week Spring '09 Sneak Peek

Sep 24, 2008 by Nancy L.

Hair and makeup trends at New York Fashion Week Spring 2009!

Makeup for spring 2009 will feature dark, exotic eyes paired with rosy or neutral cheeks and lips, and hair will be streamlined, if you can believe what I saw backstage this week at New York Fashion Week. The look, ideal customer and intent is obviously going to differ from fashion show to fashion show if you're looking at Abaeté, L'Wren Scott, Carolina Herrera and Betsey Johnson, but there were a couple of common threads running through all those shows that differed merely in the details.

The makeup mastermind at Abaeté was Jeannine Lobell for Stila, and she created a dramatic eye using a Smudge Pot (gel eyeliner) in charcoal gray. The eyeliner extended around the eye in all directions, include inward (it was applied to the inner rim), and was neither smoky nor sharp but was blended to fade out like the end of a song. Jeannine let the eyes stand out by pairing them with clean skin and just a hint of rosy lips.

Carolina Herrera is the first lady of fashion, and her makeup look was positively presidential, much like that at Abaeté but slightly more ladylike and subdued. The hair at her show was slicked back but slightly textured, as shown off inimitably by Agyness Deyn.

The hair at Abaeté was created by David Cruz of Redken and featured tight buns with dimensional shine created by the application of Electric Wax. It's an elegant look anyone could wear successfully at home, and for this I applaud him!

L'Wren Scott's eyes were more rocker chick, and her hair was bed-head, but contained Bed Head, all of which was fitting for Mick Jagger's main squeeze. But the true rock star of fashion week was Betsey Johnson, and she had a look all her own, created by Fulvia of Make Up Forever and Italo of Redken. Her makeup was pure Raggedy Ann, with long faux eyelashes on top and bottom, created with Aqua Eyes eyeliner. These were paired with very rosy cheeks and lips on white skin, a look I'm about to recreate with stuff I bought at Target. Hair was synthetic wigs in bright colors with lots of shine, cut into a sharp bob to bring the eyes into focus. My good friend Italo says you need a certain personality to carry off those colors, but anyone can wear the cut.

Green Movement in Clothing: Bamboo

Sep 23, 2008 by MJM

One of the major trends in the green clothing movement is bamboo fabricclothing. Through a process, it is possible to transform bamboo stalks into fabrics that can be used to make a wide variety of products, including bamboo fabric shirts.

Environmental Friendliness of Bamboo Fabric
Bamboo has long been recognized as a preferred material for many things. It is environmentally friendly and is in abundance. It has been used in flooring, furniture and to make other wood products. Now it is being used to make clothing. Right now, there are questions about the "greenness" of the process used to transform bamboo fibers into clothing fibers. Chemicals used in this process may be of a dubious nature, and there are other issues. However, even with these concerns, the Green Guide points out that bamboo is still more environmentally friendly than wholly synthetic fibers or even cotton. This is due to the unique characteristics of bamboo:

  • Requires very little water
  • Naturally resistant to pests
  • Very hardy and requires no fertilizer
  • Grows quickly (up to a foot per day)
  • Grows in the wild (although some are starting to cultivate it due to its popularity).

There are hopes that the process will become greener, but right now a greener process would mean sacrificing comfort.

Benefits of Wearing Bamboo Fabric Clothing
Toasted bamboo fabrics have benefits to the wearer, beyond the knowledge that he or she is wearing something that is better for the environment. Bamboo fabric provides wicking, which keeps moisture away from the skin. It is antibacterial and absorbent. These qualities mean that bamboo fabric has a high level of comfort and performance. It seems a little odd to be wearing bamboo fabric, but it really is comfortable and environmentally friendly.

In the end, it may not be a bad idea to look into bamboo fabric clothing for your next new clothes purchase.

Evolution Of Clothes: How the Mini Skirt Got So Mini

Sep 22, 2008 by Racheline M.

The miniskirt, which seems a rather ordinary part of fashion today, was shocking when it first emerged on the scene. While hemlines started to go up significantly with the abandonment of corsetry by some in the 1920s with flapper-style dresses often showing off the knees, women's clothes for most of the first half of the 20th century remained fairly modest and well structured.

Then the miniskirt arrived. Considered part of the Mod fashion trend of mid 1960s in Britain, the skirt, which generally must be at least eight inches above the knee to qualify as a mini, is usually credited to fashion designer Mary Quant who began experimenting with the shorter skirts as early as the 1950s. Other designers picked up on the trend and hemlines continued to rise, resulting not just in the ubiquity of the miniskirt but also the arrival of the micro-mini. In fact, it was thanks to these skirts that pantyhose and tights became more common than stockings with garters. The short skirts would reveal garter belts, stocking tops and possibly more without the new hosiery.

In the 1970s, the miniskirt faced a backlash, not on moral grounds (although there have always been some objectors) but on fashion grounds. With hemlines unable to go higher, and fashion always thriving on change, skirts necessarily became longer and more flowing in response to the mini. The 1980s brought the return of the miniskirt (not that it ever really went away) and more styles and cuts. Popular miniskirt trends included those based on the skirts of cheerleader uniforms and those structured into puffs and spheres with tulle and other even heavier construction.

The miniskirt, however, became truly tame in the 1990s, when it became a common part of women's business wardrobe, at least on television. The sexy business suits of shows like Ally McBeal and Sex in the City became so ubiquitous that many workplaces found their dress codes and expectations challenging by younger office workers who had used these shows for blueprints.

Today the miniskirt, micro-mini and mini-dress continue to be alive and well and appear both on their own as well as worn over pants, leggings or tights, often in a nod to international styles that pair long tunics (or short dresses) with pants.

Clothing from Around the World: Why so Many Women Love Spanish Fashion

Sep 21, 2008 by Fabletoo

I'm totally in love with the Spanish fashion world. Why? Skinny girls have now been banned from the catwalk. In Spain, skinny girls are out, and larger, more normal looking girls are in. For those of us who aren't a size 0 (most of the world, I might add), this is a welcome change and one that should be adopted by every other country's fashion industry.

I was in Spain recently on vacation and immediately noticed that Spanish girls are quite curvy (good for me, as I tend to be the same). But they have fabulous fashion sense and wear gorgeous clothes in beautiful, high-quality fabrics and designs. The latest fashion trends in Spain have been long flowing floral dresses that are really romantic, jeans with a faded look and lots of jersey pieces. Leather three-quarter length jackets are also making a comeback along with plaid skirts and pants and thigh length knitted cardigans. (Spain can get quite cold in winter, which surprises many foreigners who arrive in December toting bikinis for 50 degree weather).

Lately, Spanish fashion has been influenced by designs from acting luminaries like Penelope Cruz and Milla Jovovich, who have been designing collections for a popular Spanish chain boutique. Knitted pieces in vibrant greens and purples are part of Penelope Cruz's latest designs along with dark brown and black leather pieces. Milla Jovovich, on the other hand, is into flowing, flowery dresses that are slightly off-beat and cool. Clutch bags in bright yellows, greens, purples and pinks are also all the rage, especially if made in Italian silk and complimented by brightly colored accessories.

Overall, there is no strict fashion code in Spain. Everyone pretty much wears what they want. In the summer, you'll see lots of dresses, skirts, skinny tops and shorts, and in the winter, sweaters, jeans and jackets reign supreme. For this reason, Spain is one of my favorite fashion countries. The Spanish have great style but don't insist that everyone looks alike. Other country's fashion cultures could take some hints from that.

Celebrity Fashion: Fall Dress Code

Sep 20, 2008 by Tiffany B

As we head into the fall season, it appears that shirt dresses will still be popular with celebrities. Shirt dresses are a great way to be casual but still trendy. Basically, a shirt dress looks like a long structured shirt. Most of the time it is a button-up dress and sometimes has a tie or belt around the waist. Blake Lively was seen wearing a blue shirt dress as she headed to the David Letterman show. Other celebrities such as Kelly Ripa and Katie Holmes have also sported shirt dresses. To go for a dressier look, pair a shirt dress with some high heels by Alexander McQueen. And to go for a more casual day look, pair the shirt dress with some cute flats by Marc Jacobs.

Well, it seems that not all celebrities like to wear skin tight dresses and skirts, which is good to know. Full skirt dresses have been seen all over in Hollywood. America Ferrera was just seen wearing a full skirt dress to an awards night. The full skirt dress can help camouflage a tummy or love handles, not that celebrities know what those are! Other celebrities that have been seen all dressed up in full skirts are Scarlett Johansson, Debra Messing, Minka Kelly and Paris Hilton. Full skirt dresses make a great alternative to having a tight dress if you are uncomfortable with your body. This is a definite celebrity fashion trend that should be followed.

Trench coats are timeless and celebrities are seen wearing them all the time. Trench coats are a great option for fall. As the weather gets colder, don't ruin an outfit with a bad coat, but invest in a good trench coat. Of course, someone like Anne Hathaway, who almost always dresses in classic pieces, has been seen wearing trench coats quite often. Other celebrities such as Mandy Moore get more creative with their trench coats and opt for bolder colors such as yellow. Black, tan and white trench coats are all classic pieces and can be worn with just about anything. Celebrities just love the black trench by Jean Paul Gaultier, because it is a classic piece that will never go out of style.

History of Manolo Blahnik Shoes

Sep 19, 2008 by Eisla Sebastian

If you are a fan of "Sex and the City," then you have undoubtedly heard of Manolo Blahnik. Manolo Blahnik is a shoe designer who was born in the Canary Islands on November 27, 1942. He studied art and fashion in Geneva and Paris before launching his career in the fashion industry. His unique and artistic perspectives on shoe design have allowed Blahnik to make a name for his shoes in countries around the world. Today, his shoe designs are legends, and his vintage and contemporary designs still remain big sellers in the fashion capitals of the world such as New York, Paris and Tokyo.

Manolo Blahnik Gets His Start
Like most great fashion designers, Manolo Blahnik did not start out designing independently. After graduating from the University of Geneva, he spent some time in Paris studying fashion. He got a job in a little London boutique called Zapata in 1968. His position in this boutique provided him with the exposure that he needed to develop his understanding of the fashion world, which he used to write for Vogue Italia.

His entrance into the world of shoe design occurred as the result of an infamous meeting with Diana Vreeland. She took a look at his fashion portfolio and told him flat out that his forte was in shoe design. For shoe lovers the world round, this was an epiphany that lead to the development of one of the most famous shoe lines in the world.

In 1972, Blahnik was asked by Ossie Clark to design shoes for one of his fashion shows. This was the start of the Blahnik line. Shortly after this runway show, Blahnik borrowed 2,000 pounds Sterling, bought Zapata and started his own footwear boutique.

The Manolo Blahnik Shoe
The history of shoes would not be complete without mentioning the designs produced by Manolo Blahnik. His shoes are known for their unique shapes, unique ornamentation, heels and straps. Some of the most memorable shoe designs created by Blahnik include the original Blahnik shoe produced for Ossie Clark in 1972, the Cherry Shoe and the Piaggi.

Celebrity Gossip: Jennifer Aniston Returns to TV, Ashlee Simpson Is Eating for Three, The Queen wants Babies!

Sep 17, 2008 by Becky

It's official - John Mayer has officially moved on after breaking things off with his ex, America's favorite friend, Jennifer Aniston. In Touch Magazine reported that John Mayer hooked up with a cocktail waitress just the other night and frankly, nobody is too surprised. John Mayer certainly has a history of hooking up with random and not-so-random girls, like Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Love Hewitt and most recently Jennifer Aniston. Hmm, I wonder if that cocktail waitress' name started with the letter J as well.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Aniston is moving on in her own way as well. Sources are confirming that Jennifer will appear in an episode of NBC's hit sitcom, 30 Rock, this upcoming season. It's nice to see that Jennifer doesn't consider herself too big of a star to return to her TV roots.

Star Magazine is reporting that Ashlee Simpson's doctor told her that she's gaining too much weight, too quickly during her pregnancy. Now do doctors really talk that way to pregnant women? And even if it's true, it seems highly unlikely that Ashlee Simpson could gain too much weight, seeing as how she didn't weigh much to begin with. Still, Star Magazine claims that Ashlee is so scared by what the doctor said that she is stocking up on Size 0 jeans to help motivate her to get back in shape once the baby is born.

Celebrity publicist Lizzie Grubman just announced that she is pregnant with twins. She and husband, Chris Stern, already have a 1-year-old son, named Harrison, who is eagerly anticipating his new siblings.

And another couple who just announced their plans to have a baby very soon is Queen Latifah and her partner, Jeanette Jenkins. Now, I didn't even know that Queen Latifah was involved with anybody, much less a woman, so that's even bigger news to me than the fact that the two are eager to adopt a child of their own. The recently slimmed down actress is also planning on getting married in California to her partner very soon.

Green Movement in Clothing: Bringing Clothes Pins Back

Sep 16, 2008 by MJM

When you decide to join the green movement in clothing, it does not mean that you should get rid of what you have and run out to buy new threads. Quite the contrary. It is important to note that the greenest clothing is using the stuff you already have for as long as you can. One way you can preserve your clothing -- and the earth -- is by changing the way you wash your clothes. This goes beyond just using earth-friendly detergents. It also includes laundering in cold water and line drying your clothes.

Most clothing, if you check the label, can be washed in cold water. This means that you are losing less energy to heat the water used in the wash. Additionally, if you hang your clothing to dry, you will be saving energy (and money) by using less gas or electricity. If you do buy new clothes, check labels to make sure that they are cold wash garments. Do your best to avoid dry-clean only clothing, since the chemicals and processes used can damage the environment.

Line drying your clothes

Line drying your clothes can be a great way to save energy, making your clothing "greener." Plus, it gets you outside. Your children can play outside while you do some of your chores. Hang shirts from the bottom (use two pins) and pants from the waistlines. You can make your clothing softer by either using a fabric softener in the wash cycle, or by fluffing the clothes in the dryer on "air" setting. Since heat is not used, not much electricity or gas is utilized, and clothes only needs about 10 minutes.

For the winter months, you can use an indoor dryer rack. This can be a great way to humidify your home as well, since heaters can make the air dry. This way, you can save money on a humidifier.

With some careful planning, you can make the clothing you have greener, just by changing how you launder your clothes!

Importance of Clothing in Art, Film, TV, Music: Sex and the City

Sep 16, 2008 by Racheline M.

While Sex and the City has been off the air for some time now, its popularity has endured. The recent release of the Sex and the City movie is only one indicator of this, and is, in many ways, the most minor. Where Sex and the City has truly endured is its influence on fashion and the way it has demanded that young women view style as a constant, ubiquitous challenge.

The clothes -- like the apartments -- on Sex in the City were often ridiculously expensive and certainly beyond the means of many of the characters in the early seasons of the show before they had found success. But our heroines, brilliantly styled by long-time New York designer Patricia field, were resourceful shoppers who knew the value of a few outrageous or classic pieces to a wardrobe.

For example, Carrie taught us a trench coat can make any outfit sing, especially when belted tightly and mixed with something fun. Carrie's clothes are all about using conventional bits
of style to be entirely playful.

Meanwhile, Samantha said it all with bright colors plunging necklines and an unmistakable love for her shape. Samantha taught us that dressing for our own enjoyment was a sure way to wow others and that being the center of attention required confidence as much as skin and Samantha showed us plenty of both.

Charlotte, on the other hand, reminds us we don't have to be outrageous to be fashionable. She made preppy cute and interesting again, pairing pale colors with khakis and pearls. Instead of being bland, her pretty look was so completely well-executed that Sex and the City made preppy an aspirational style again.

Finally, Miranda's fashion stood up for quirky women in corporate jobs and reminded us that the definition of sexy is up to us. With short hair and a sometimes androgynous look,
Miranda made corporate clothes interesting but never played by the rules all the time.

Without the fashion sense of Sex and the City, we'd have missed out on the madness for "It bags," giant flower pins, the highest heels worn with absolutely everything and the belief
that high fashion can be, and maybe should be, every day.

Evolution of Clothing: It's a Wrap!

Sep 15, 2008 by Racheline M.

The wrap dress, a popular silhouette today because it is flattering to so many figures and accommodating to a fluctuating size, got its start in the 1920s, when hemlines went up and the heavy structural garments that had been a part of women's clothing for not just decades but centuries went away. The wrap dress was just one of many fashions to come out of the flapper
era and was a celebration of women's free movement. But more than being part of the outrageousness of the time, the wrap dress was deeply practical, being easy to construct and not needing to be fit precisely.

Diane von Furstenberg is widely credited with bringing the wrap dress back to
modern fashion in a trend that has now lasted more than 30 years. She highlights how easy the dress is to wear and the way it echoes more traditional garments from kimono to togas. The kimono comparison is particularly apt; the 1920 were mad for all things Asian in fashion, hence the wrap dress's initial success.

Since then the dress has found succes for any number of reasons -- it's quick and easy to put on, but looks great, thus accommodating the modern woman and her very busy life and is just as easy to take off, a real bonus in a society that is relatively nonrestrictive about women's sexuality.

Today's wrap dresses come in a huge range of fabrics and styles, making them perfect for everything from casual to formal wear. The silhouette has even become to popular that the faux wrap dress is now often seen on racks, allowing women to have that look of criss-crossing fabric without having to worry about slipper ties that made need adjustment. The true wrap remains the most practical however, allowing one to wear it as modestly or outrageously as is appropriate for the occasion. A knee-length version can be the perfect day to evening dress with an under 60-second adjustment.

Celebrity Gossip: Rehab, Break-Ups, Hook-Ups, And a Wedding

Sep 15, 2008 by Becky

David Duchovny, of X Files fame, checked himself into rehab this past week. No, he's not an alcoholic or drug addict. David Duchovny checked himself in to treat his sex addiction. That's right boys and girls, David Duchovny has an Internet porn addiction. Now I don't feel so bad for David Duchovny - after all he is a grown man. But I do feel bad for his wife, actress*Tea Leoni*. Especially because news of David being a sex addict quickly sparked rumors that he obviously must've cheated on his wife. But no, no allegations of David straying have surfaced ... just a good, old-fashion, Internet porn addiction.

Pink broke things off with her husband, Carey Hart, not too long ago. But now she claims that she's still in love with him, even going as far as to claim that they remain the best of friends. Now it really drives me crazy when separated or divorced couples play the "We're still best friends" card, because if that were true, then why not just stay married to your best friend? Am I right? But hey, that's just my opinion.

Sopranos star James Gandolfini tied the knot in Honolulu, Hawaii, with his fiancée, Deborah Lin, this past Saturday. The bride, a former model, wore a beautiful white gown made of Italian lace. Since the wedding took place in Hawaii, there were a lot of Hawaiian touches and Chinese touches to the wedding and reception as well as to celebrate Deborah's Chinese heritage. Congrats to the happy couple!

And finally, here's the latest "Who is Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps dating now?" rumor. Word has it that Michael Phelps heard that American Idol winner Carrie Underwood thinks that he's cute and that was all it took to get things going. Michael and Carrie are apparently texting up a storm and already planning their first date. No word on what they're going to do on the first date (dinner and a movie, anyone?), but it will most likely take place close to Carrie's home in Nashville, Tennessee, and far from the eyes of paparazzi in LA.

Clothing from Around the World: UK Fashion!

Sep 14, 2008 by Fabletoo

One thing my mother always says about British fashion is this: If it's in fashion in the UK this year, it'll be in fashion in the U.S. next year. Her philosophy is that British fashion is usually one year ahead of the U.S., and from what I've seen, I think she's correct.

The first thing that always surprises me and makes me laugh when I go to the UK is how quickly the Brits strip down to bare bones clothes - shorts, tank tops and spaghetti strap tops - even though, by American standards, it's still freezing outside. My latest trip was no exception. The weather in England is so cold for most of the year that, when it hits 65 degrees, that's a heat wave for the Brits and they're darn well gonna take off as many clothes as possible to enjoy the sun.

Overall though, the Brits do have a good sense of style. Also, as they go out quite a bit to the local pub orceat dinner with friends, British women tend to spend a lot of money on clothes for evenings. For women, current fashions are spaghetti strap tops and dresses, brightly colored dressescand skirts in all lengths and shawls (both heavy and lightweight) forcevening wear. Pants are also in style in block colors, with Capriscstill being pretty fashionable, especially in black, white and beige. These are paired with designer T- shirts or filmy, flowing tops. There's also been a re-emergence of ethnic fashions with clothing from India, Thailand and Nepal coming back in vogue.

For men, classic khakis and black trousers or jeans in classic cuts, paired with shirts cut in clean lines and often with a colorful sweater or hooded sweatshirt to finish out the outfit. In the evenings, the UK gets pretty chilly. Keep a sweater or jacket to keep out the cold.

In the UK, as long as clothes are cut well and have a stylish flair, it doesn't really matter what you wear. All lengths of dresses and skirts are fine along with T-shirts, shirts, blouses and spaghetti strap tops. Classic British men's clothes will never go out of style so an investment in beautifully tailored pants and shirts will always be a good bet. Oh, don't forget Bermuda shorts. They're back in fashion too and look great with a nice pair of Italian leather loafers.

Clothing Rules: Time To Turn In the Old Coat

Sep 13, 2008 by Stephanie Modkins

Do you have a favorite fall jacket? If you are like most people, the
answer is "yes." It's that funky blue jean jacket or black leather one
that you pull out each year when the weather starts to cool down. You
got it several years ago on sale or as a gift from a loved one. Oh
sure, a few buttons are missing, and it's kind of tight. Of course,
there are a few tears (not really noticeable.) And, unfortunately the
hemline isn't straight anymore. But - you just can't let it go. Well .
. . it's time.

It's time to realize that a well-fitted, contemporary jacket
is one of the best accessories you can have in your fall wardrobe. Not
only does it set off a pair of pants or skirt well, it also highlights
and de-emphasizes figure flaws. Below are a few examples.

Example
1:
A superhero with a tendency to leap tall buildings and wear tights
wants to hide his identity from the rest of the world. So what does he
do? Invest into a suit and long trench coat. Now, no one can recognize
who he is, not even the girl of his dreams.

Example 2: A pig
with a love for pearls wants to impress a certain frog on a dinner
date. As a result, she throws on a satin purple jacket with a large
belt. Walla! Her voluptuous figure is now cut in half and she's
vivacious.

So, you see. A fashionable jacket can do wonders for you. It can literally transform a person. All you
have to do is pick one or two fashionable ones that fit your needs and
life. Here are a few rules. Buy jackets that:

  • Match the theme of your wardrobe
  • Flatter your overall figure and skin tone
  • Fit you (not too loose or too tight)

By
doing these things, you will be able to march into fall with a great
jacket and a whole lot of style. Also, you'll be able to let go of an
old friend (your old jacket) that really isn't stepping up to the plate
these days anyway. Have a going away party and toss him in the trash.

Celebrity Gossip: Pam and Mike, Heidi and Lauren, Tiger's New Baby, and Miley Cyrus' True Inspiration

Sep 12, 2008 by Becky

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that these two
celebrities would end up going out on a date together, but I guess
anything is possible in Hollywood. The latest odd couple
in Tinsel town is none other than Pamela Anderson and Michael Jackson.
It seems that the date was arranged by their respective people (most
likely agents) and all done in secret. However, witnesses from the
restaurant state that the couple really seemed to hit it off, and it
seems that Michael even asked Pamela out for a second date. What I want
to know is what do the two possibly have in common - besides plastic
surgery?

Hill's vixen, Heidi Montag's clothing line, may be
outselling Lauren Conrad's at Kitsons, but that doesn't mean that
designers are clamoring for her to wear their stuff. In fact, word is
that designers frequently send free items like dresses, sweaters and shoes
to the other stars of The Hills, like Lauren Conrad and Audrina
Patridge, but they don't really want their clothes associated with the
Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt name. Ouch.

Tiger Woods and his
wife Elin Nordegren are expecting baby number 2! Tiger Woods announced
the happy news on his web site. The couple just welcomed their first
daughter, Sam Alexis Woods last summer.

And Brett Ratner,
director extraordinaire, recently spilled the beans about the true
inspiration for Miley Cyrus' hit song, 7 Things. Apparently the whole
song came about because of her ex-boyfriend, Nick Jonas, the youngest
member of the Jonas Brothers. Brett talked about going to Miley Cyrus'
house and even being able to see Miley's "ex-box" - you know that box
that everyone keeps after a break-up with things that your ex gave you.
Now here's the clincher - Brett Ratner never mentioned any names in his
interview with MTV, but he did give a rather big hint to anybody
familiar with the Jonas Brothers. He said that Miley Cyrus wore her
ex's diabetes necklace in the video. Of course, Nick Jonas was
diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes not too long ago.

Fashion Show of the Month: Macy's Passport Fashion Show

Sep 11, 2008 by Nancy L.

The Macy's Passport Fashion Show is celebrating it's 25th
anniversary this year with a theme you'd expect from Northern
California: Passion and Compassion. This event, sponsored by Macy's
West and American Express, will be held over Wednesday and Thursday,
September 17th and 18th, at the Fort Mason Center
in San Francisco, and will benefit charities that fight against
HIV/AIDS. Macy's Passport has contributed over $27,000,000 to these
charities to date.

Macy's Passport is one of the
highest-anticipated fashion shows for San Francisco society. Tickets
cost $200 for runway seats, or $85 for general admission. San Francisco
is a liberal, creative city, of course, and besides the kinds of things
you'd expect at a fashion show sponsored by a department store, like
trend forecasting for Nike, Hugo Boss and Wonderbra, it could be
described as a circus, if the term was used complimentarily.

Macy's
Passport features unique entertainment such as motorcyclists, break
dancers, strippers, Bollywood musical numbers, and sex education game
show-type audience participation games. The lighting and music for the
show are award-winning, and celebrities who have appeared at the show
include Claudia Schiffer, Christie Turlington, Elizabeth Taylor, Sharon
Stone, Annette Bening, Tyra Banks, Macy Gray, Cindy Crawford, Tina
Turner, Will Smith, Liza Minnelli, k.d. lang, Jennifer Lopez, Sean
Combs, Dita von Teese, and Mary J. Blige. Designers Calvin Klein,
Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Tommy Hilfiger, Anna Sui, Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs have all participated as well.

After
the show the clothes from the runway will be available for sale on eBay
as well, providing another opportunity to fundraise for AIDS charities.
Fashion shows outside of New York can appear provincial, especially
when Fashion Week is tacked on arbitrarily at the end of any city name
that's having a fashion show for even an afternoon-Mattoon Fashion Week
and Bagel Fest, anyone? San Francisco is a world-class city, though,
and the fashions at Macy's Passport rival anything you could find in
the tents in Bryant Park, with the atmosphere possibly trumping the New
York shows. Don't snub it because it has the name of a department store
found in every mall across the country in its title; take a look, it's
time well-spent.

Celebrity Gossip: Welcome New Celebrity Babies!

Sep 8, 2008 by Becky

The Hollywood stork was working overtime these past couple weeks delivering babies to celebrities from all over.

Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana, welcomed baby #3 on August 20th to their growing family. The couple has two other children - Alexia, 10 and Isabella, 2. Their new baby was named Gia Zavala. With the addition of his new daughter, Matt Damon is really outnumbered now, being the only male in a houseful of girls.

And who would've thought that Latin superstar, Ricky Martin, would pull a Michael Jackson and actually hire a surrogate mother to carry his children for him? The twin babies were delivered just a few short weeks ago and they are already under Ricky Martin's care. News of Ricky Martin becoming a single father overnight spread like wildfire and it seems that everybody has an opinion. No one really saw this one coming, but we do wish Ricky and his new babies the best of luck!

Gwen Stefani finally popped! I don't know about you, but it was getting almost painful for me to view pictures of how big Gwen Stefani had gotten. I know it had to be extremely uncomfortable for her as well. Nevertheless, Gwen remained stylish to the end, wearing maternity dresses in typical Gwen Stefani prints and colors. Their new baby boy, Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale, caused a lot of controversy with his name, but apparently the name has special meaning to the Gavin and Gwen, so that's really all that matters.

Jason Lee, the star of My Name is Earl, welcomed his first child with girlfriend, Ceren Alkac, on August 10th.The couple are now proud parents of a new baby girl. Jason Lee has another son, Pilot Inspektor, with his ex-fiancee, Beth Riesgraf.

And finally, Victoria's Secret model, Alessandra Ambrosio, gave birth to her first child, a beautiful baby girl. She and boyfriend, Jamie Mazur, named their daughter Anja Louise Ambrosio Mazur. Models must be superhuman because Alessandra claims that pregnancy and motherhood have been easy. She's even planning to be back on the runway by November.

Congrats to all the new parents!

Evolution of Clothing: Jeans, From Gold Mines To High Fashion

Sep 8, 2008 by Racheline M.

Blue jeans -- or, in fact, jeans in all colors and fabrics -- are now ubiquitous. But how did denim work pants go from fields and garages to schools, restaurants and high fashion?

The earliest form of today's jeans was invented by Levi Strauss & Co (which was really Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis) in the second half of the 19th century, but their true precursor was the 16th century cotton dungaree worn by sailors.

Jeans found their way into fashion consciousness and pop culture with the rise of the teenager in the 1950s. Considered a form of low-level rebellion, jeans-wearing teens emulating James Dean and other movie sex symbols of the times were often barred from restaurants and movie theaters. Certainly, jeans could never be worn at school.

But all of that changed quickly. With the advent of the 1960s pop culture, fashion got a lot more outrageous than jeans, and by the end of that turbulent decade jeans were a comfortable, uncontroversial part of most Americans' casual wardrobes. In the 1970s, jeans innovated to keep up with the styles of the times leading to versions of the pants made in different cuts, including bell-bottoms, and treated with different colors and washes.

As clean jeans in good condition became acceptable at schools, teens found other ways to rebel with the pants, leading to fashion fads where jeans were ripped in specific ways. Even so, the acceptance of jeans continued to march on, with most people of all ages owning several pairs.

With the advent of more casual dress codes in white collar workplaces during the Internet boom of the 1990s, jeans arrived at the office on casual Fridays or every day, even as they were often paired with a sport jacket, collared shirt and tie for men, and fashionable blouses for women.

Perhaps most startling in the rise of the jean was the shift from affordable work pant to high-priced status symbol. In the 1980s brands like Jordache and Guess dominated. Today it's names like True Religion, Lucky Brand and Ben Sherman.

But despite the ability to spend $200 or more on a pair of jeans, they're still not welcome anyway, with high-end restaurants, bars and even clubs. But with the persistence jeans have shown, these rules are unlikely to last for long.

Clothing Sizes and You: So You're Well Endowed In Your Hind Side...

Sep 7, 2008 by Stephanie Modkins

"I like big butts and I can not lie. You other brothers can't deny that when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face . . ."

  • Rapper Sirmixalot

Are you struggling with a badonkadonk? The junk in your trunk is so full that there is barely room for it in a pair of jeans? Your booty is so high that you could put a saucer and teacup on it without spilling a drop? Of course, in some circumstances, it can come in handy. You never have any trouble getting a free bag of apples from the old man at the fruit stand. But, in other situations, it's a deficit. When you want to come across as wholesome, serious and business-like, some people refuse to take you seriously. They can't seem to get their mind off of you or your backside. So you need a few solutions.

The two most obvious solutions to anyone dealing with a large posterior is to cover it up or minimize it. This feat can be accomplished in several ways. All are fashionable and won't completely lose your lovely shape. They are as follows:

(Cover-ups)
Long Sweaters
Thigh-length Jackets
Shapely Tunics
Colorful ponchos

(Minimizers)
Pocket-less Jeans/Slacks
Black/Beige Spanx
Flowing Skirts

These items can work for any woman who's trying to tone down her backside. It will help take the focus of attention off that area when you are in more conservative settings. Of course, you an always ignore these fashion tips when you want to strut your stuff. You know - like when you're at a good club, wearing an outfit designed to flaunt every curve and Sirmixalot hits the airwaves. Then, you dance with your boyfriend or husband like it's the early 90's when the song was first released. It's a time in which shaking your badonkadonk is appropriate, fun and able to get you the attention from the one person you really want it from.

Green Movement in Clothing: HEMP!

Sep 6, 2008 by MJM

When one thinks of hemp, for some reason often the first thoughts that come to mind are of marijuana. Nothing could be further from the truth. (No, you can't smoke hemp fabric and get high.) Instead, hemp clothing provides a durable natural fiber that can make comfortable clothing that is also eco-friendly. This is why hemp has such a prominent place in the green movement in clothing.

Characteristics of hemp clothing:

Strong. A tensile strength that is three times that of cotton.

Lightweight. Hemp clothing is very light. It is also absorbent.

Versatile. There are many uses for hemp material. It can be easily blended with other natural fibers, including silk.

Weather resistant. Hemp clothing is durable and tough. It resists mold and it blocks harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Better for the environment. Hemp farming requires little water, and hemp is resistance to pests, so pesticides are not needed. Additionally, hemp grows very well, so fertilizers are not usually used. Hemp is very renewable.

Cost-effective. Because of its ease of growth, hemp is easy (and less expensive) to grow.
It is important to note that in some countries (notably China) the production of hemp clothing does include harmful chemical processes. However, there are other manufacturers that use enzymes with a biological basis in order to maintain the earth-friendly hemp clothing process.

Hemp clothing can be rougher than cotton, which is why it is often blended with cotton for shirts. However, hemp is used a great deal in the manufacture of sandals and shoes.
Hemp clothing is mostly available online, although some offline retailers are starting to sell hemp as part of the green movement in clothing. Local clothing boutiques and Fair Trade shops also usually carry hemp clothing.

Here are some online places where you can find hemp clothing:

Clothing Rules: Fall Fashion No-Nos

Sep 6, 2008 by Stephanie Modkins

Fall is just around the corner and soon Mother Nature will start responding to its call. Leaves will fall. Lawns will look colorful. Temperatures will drop. And people, well, we'll start changing too, but not necessarily in a nice way. For some reason, cool weather convinces some people to forget all about their fashion sense and start doing a few wacky things.

You won't notice it at first. The change will be gradual. It'll happen a little bit at a time. However, the end result will be large groups of people breaking fashion rules because they refuse to accept that the season is changing and they need to let go of summer. Of course, I understand. I love summer too. But when something you love leaves or takes a sabbatical, you've got to let it go. So the following are a few fashion no-no's that you shouldn't do at all in the fall or at least stop by October 1st.

Fall Fashion No-Nos

These things are the common fashion blunders that people do in fall because they refuse to accept that summer is over. However, these ideas are just partly right. There are ways to fix a few of these things with just a change of piece of attire. Here's some help.

Fall Fashion Fixes

As you can see, by switching a few things around, you can turn your fall fashion no-no into a yes. It's just a matter of buying a few additional items and putting a few others back into the closet. Do these things and you won't be walking around this fall wondering why people are giving you weird looks. You'll be fashionable, warm and appropriately dressed for cool weather.

Celebrity Gossip: Baby Fever!

Sep 5, 2008 by Becky

It seems like everyone in Hollywood suddenly has baby fever! This past week, a handful of celebs came out of the woodwork to announce that they're pregnant.

Jennifer Garner finally confirmed that she and hubby, Ben Affleck are indeed expecting baby #2. Jennifer had refused to either confirm or deny the pregnancy up until now, although her loose-fitting shirts and baby bump were reaching the point of no return. In an interview with Access Hollywood, she stated that she and Ben Affleck are excited and looking forward to bringing in a little baby brother or sister for their daughter, Violet.

Another hot couple adding another child to their growing family is Angie Harmon and husband, Jason Sehorn. The actress and former NFL star already have two beautiful daughters, Finley and Avery, but are anxiously awaiting baby #3. Angie Harmon is hoping for a boy, but Jason has said that he'd actually prefer a girl because any son of his is bound to face pressure about playing sports. Either way, I'm sure the new baby will be a welcome addition to the beautiful family.

And I know I'm not the only one who didn't see this one coming - adult film star, Jenna Jameson is also expecting a baby! She and her boyfriend, Tito Ortiz, are expecting their first child together. Jenna was actually pregnant once before several years ago, but ended up losing the baby to a miscarriage due to the stress of cancer (she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma). She's being extra cautious this time around, so best of luck to the new mommy-to-be! I guess even adult film stars get the hankering to settle down and start a family too.

Newlywed couple, Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller, are expecting their first child together as well. Charlie already has three daughters from previous marriages, including Sam and Lola with ex-wife, Denise Richards.

And finally, Sporty Spice is going to be a mom! Mel C will be the last member of the Spice Girls to have a child. She and boyfriend, Thomas Starr are super-excited about the pregnancy and we wish them the best of luck.

Clothing Rules: White After Labor Day?

Sep 4, 2008 by Stephanie Modkins

Labor Day is over and I am sure that one question is on your mind. It's plaguing you like an old lover who refuses to believe your relationship is all over. Well, don't feel bad. This question is one that has boggled the mind of many fashion scholars sparking ugly debates and fits of fashion rebellion. What is it? "Is it okay to wear white after Labor Day?"

Now, this question is a valid one. Every year, the information released by fashion gurus on the topic is sketchy at best. Oprah sends out the word that it's perfectly okay to wear white after Labor Day while her competition Tyra Banks says it isn't. So who is right? The answer is both. Certain clothing attire are okay to wear after Labor Day while others or not.

The rule of thumb to follow after Labor Day is not to wear anything white below your waist. So that means that you should store away all of your white pants, skirts and shoes. Wearing them after Labor Day will make you look like a fashion reject. Instead, replace these items with beautiful fall colors: greens, blacks, blues and browns. These colors will make you look festive and ready for Fall. And, if you are really into white, you can top them off with a nice white or crème sweater.

Feel better now? I know you do. The question of wearing white after Labor Day is a big one. It can ruin holidays and other festive events because the fashion police are always lurking around reading to give you a verbal ticket. However, now you know enough information to fight it. You can wear white after Labor Day as long as you follow a simple rule and be the bell of the ball.

Celebrity Gossip: Babies for Beyonce, Olsen Twins Outed, And Jimmy Wants Sara Back!

Sep 3, 2008 by Becky

Is funny man Jimmy Kimmel having second thoughts about his recent split from Sarah Silverman, his girlfriend of five years? The National Enquirer is reporting that close sources have said that Jimmy has actually been drunk dialing Sarah and asking to get together so the two can talk. Unfortunately, Sarah seems to already have moved on. No, she's not dating anybody new yet (that I know of), but her friends say that once Sarah cuts a relationship off there's no going back. Too bad for Jimmy.

One of Mary Kate Olsen's ex-bodyguards is spilling all her secrets, but it's seriously nothing that we haven't heard before. He claims that Mary Kate is into smoking pot and other drugs and has been a heavy drinker since her high school days. Now, you know that Mary Kate and her famous twin sis, Ashley, both have tiny, childlike bodies, so you can imagine the toll that alcohol and drug abuse takes on their bodies when they indulge. He also touched on Mary Kate's struggle with an eating disorder and says that Ashley and her family were frantic with worry over how to deal with it and most importantly, how to get Mary Kate back to a healthy weight again for her own sake.

Now that Beyonce and Jay-Z are supposedly married, Beyonce is feeling the pressure to start popping out kids ... soon. But the pressure isn't coming from her, as much it's coming from Jay-z and her own mother. It seems that Beyonce has the entire next two years planned out for her career already and she doesn't see how having a baby at this point in her life would be possible or even beneficial for her career. Of course it doesn't help that her little sis, Solange, already has a four year old son and that her dress designer mother, Tina, is desperate for another grandchild already. I mean, if Solange can do it then Beyonce should be able to, right? Hmm, good luck with that one Beyonce!

Green Movement in Clothing: Organic Cotton

Sep 2, 2008 by MJM

One of the trends picking up steam in the green clothing movement is the use of organic cotton. Organic cotton provides a more environmentally friendly clothing product, while at the same time increasing your health by decreasing your exposure to the harsh chemicals found in pesticides.

Conventional Cotton vs. Organic Cotton
Conventional cotton is grown using vast amounts of pesticides. Indeed, among crops, cotton is one of the most pesticide-dependent. Organic cotton, on the other hand, is grown naturally, using practices that are earth friendly. Pesticides can cause all sorts of problems. They are toxic, and some people with sensitive skin find that conventional cotton is uncomfortable because of these chemicals. Organic cotton, though, does not have allergens or toxins. (You still have to be wary of dyes, however. Try to find organic cotton products that use natural dyes for color.)

Organic cotton feels soft on the skin, and many companies now make tag-less articles of clothing so that there is no itching or scratching. Additionally, you have the good feeling that comes with knowing that your clothing choices are fairly sustainable.

Clothing Made from Organic Cotton
Several companies, including Faerie's Dance, Butterfly Maidens, Lotus Organics, Nubius Organics, Go Natural Baby and more offer clothing, towels, bathrobes and other products made from organic cotton. For babies, organic cotton is becoming especially popular, since crib sheets, onesies and more can be made from organic cotton -- creating an ideal textile environment for newborns.

It is possible to buy organic cotton jeans, a variety of shirts made from organic cotton, as well as accessories like handbags and organic cotton totes. All of these products are a little more earth friendly. It is true that in some cases participating in the green movement in clothing means that you may have to pay a little more for your clothes. However, prices for organic cotton clothing are coming down as it becomes more popular.

Celebrity Gossip: Christina Applegate Fights Cancer, Adoption Agencies Fight Heidi Montag

Sep 1, 2008 by Becky

I'm sure you've heard the sad news about Christina Applegate being recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The famous blonde underwent a double mastectomy, which is a hard choice for any woman to make, but ultimately the best choice for her since she didn't want to take the chance of the disease coming back. Christina's own mother battled with two serious bouts of cancer, so she definitely knew what she was in for. She will be having reconstructive surgery and is looking forward to having a baby sometime in the near future as well with boyfriend, Martyn Lenoble. Let's hope this is the end of the cancer scare for Christina!

At this point, I'm not really surprised by much of anything that comes out of the mouth of Heidi Montag and her slimy boyfriend, Spencer Pratt. I know that the two will say just about anything for publicity. But the latest verbal fallout to spew from Speidi is that the clueless blonde couple actually wants to adopt children just like their A-list role models, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Can you imagine bikini-wearing Heidi Montag with a child from a Third World country? You know that orphaned children all over the world just went into hiding to save themselves from the fate of having Heidi and Spencer as their parents.

And finally, former model/talk show host, Tyra Banks, has been showing signs of diva behavior recently and even her Tyra Banks show studio audience is seeing it. Now I've personally never like Tyra Banks very much because she seemed incredibly self-obsessed. In fact, one of my favorite guilty pleasures is watching The Soup's Joel McHale mercilessly make fun of her on a weekly basis. But the latest story is that she actually went as far as keeping her studio audience waiting for over two hours while she chatted with the crew backstage. Then when she finally did head over to the stage, she didn't even bother to apologize to the audience for the long delay - she just started the show as if nothing had happened.
