Handbag Report: Rocker Chic Style

Nov 7, 2009 by Sabah K.

This Fall, the handbag department is touting a lineup of rocker chic-inspired collections that feature oversized studs, gleaming silver and gold buttons, and chain handles galore. If you've always had a little bit of a rocker-girl style in you, this is the season to show it off! Some of the leading handbags of the season are designed with an edgy look with oversized hardware and darker colors for that tough-girl look you crave. From chain-handled shoulder bags to studded hobos, here are some of the leading looks in handbags for Fall:

1. Gunmetal hobos and satchels. While black is still a top pick for handbags this season, gunmetal silver and pewter shades reign the runways this year and are a great match for your rocker look. Look for charcoal, dark silver and pewter handbags and clutches that will accent any outfit with a fresh and sassy look.

2. Studs galore. From the miniature clutch to the oversized hobo, studs are cropping up on every piece of arm candy you can find. Look for matte silver and gleaming gold studs that look like they've been pulled right off a motorcycle jacket.

3. Chain handle shoulder bags. If you're looking for a versatile bag to last you through the season, stick with the classic shoulder bag embellished with chain handle accents. Chain handles are a top trend in handbags this Fall, and your best bet is the oversized chain style that becomes the focal point of the bag. Not only are these handles super-sturdy (yes, you can tote your heels, wallet and a few books without worrying about breakage), but they will give you that edgy, rocker-inspired look you crave.

4. Coil accents. Coils, oversized metal hardware and rings are some of the embellishments you'll find on the tough-girl bags this season. Look for crossbody bags and satchels accentuated with these details for a fresh and fun look.

5. Extra zippers. Zippers serve a dual purpose on hobos and satchels this season, and you'll find a number of bags with lines of zippers as part of the design. They're just another way to show off your rocker-chic look for the season.

Beauty Tips: Get a Flawless Face This Fall

Nov 7, 2009 by Sabah K.

Fall is finally here, which means cooler temperatures may be leaving your skin drier than usual and in need of some moisture-rich beauty products. In addition to making sure your daily skin routine is up to par, you'll need to revive your skin after the long summer with some facial masks, nourishing scrubs and a slew of other products that will keep you glowing.

The first step to flawless skin this season is investing in a high-quality moisturizer. Look for facial creams and moisturizers that are free of chemicals and the type that are non-comedogenic so your pores don't get clogged easily. You'll need to apply moisturizer right after your cleansing and toning routine day and night, and your skin may benefit from a thicker, emollient-rich version from your favorite brand at night.

Another way to get flawless skin this Fall is to use a light, mineral makeup foundation instead of the heavier liquid variety. Mineral makeup can give you that flawless, camera-ready finish you crave without looking overly done. Look for mineral foundation that can be layered with a mineral bronzer to enjoy a healthy glow all season long.

If you want to keep your makeup looking clean and fresh this season, stick with the bronze, deep red and pink tones in lipsticks and eyeshadow this season. These are among the leading makeup palette colors for Fall 2009, and can help you create a natural, buff look for casual days and everyday use. If it's time to take things up a notch for a special event, get your flawless look with the help of a cream concealer under the eyes and pressed foundation on the face and neck. This combination will give you a smooth, mattifying look for the season.

Finally, make sure to modify your skin cleansing and exfoliation routine to accommodate for the change of seasons. Cooler temperatures mean you may need to exfoliate with a moisture-infusing scrub a couple of times a week so that your skin is free of dead skin cells and flakiness. If your cleanser seems to dry out your skin, look for a milder version or one designed for sensitive skin to avoid excessive dryness for the season.

Celebrity Gossip: Another Trump Wedding!

Nov 6, 2009 by Rebecca White-Glanders

British songster Leona Lewis hasn't let fame change her - and she staunchly sticks by the people who have been with her from the start. In a new interview, Lewis, 24, addresses the fact that she is still with her boyfriend of seven years, Lou Al-Chamaa. Lewis says some people think you should ditch the people you knew before when you find fame, and she doesn't agree with that. "For people to think that you should leave someone because, all of a sudden, you're a singer and you have opportunities. I feel sorry for them." Lewis has also kept her residence in the "gritty" Hackney area of London.

There's been another Trump wedding, only this time, it's not Donald Trump playing the groom. Ivanka Trump, daughter of Donald Trump and his ex-wife Ivana, married publisher and executive Jared Kushner in a lavish Jewish ceremony at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey last weekend. Though both bride and groom are under 30, they're already a power couple. Ivanka hosts Celebrity Apprentice, has her own fine jewelry line and is vice president of Donald Trump's real estate division. Kushner, 28, is publisher of the New York Observer and an executive at his family's company. Hopefully, Ivanka will have more luck with marriage than her father has thus far.

More than four months after the death of their father, *Michael Jackson*'s kids are still trying to adjust. LaToya Jackson recently opened up about how the kids are doing, and how each of them are trying to cope in their own way. Blanket, age 7, is "just a very sad, shy little boy. He cries." Meanwhile, his older sister Paris, 11, "thinks and writes about her father all the time." But it's the eldest boy, Prince, 12, who has LaToya most concerned. "Prince just doesn't want to speak about it. I do worry about him very much". According to LaToya, all three children are currently in therapy to help them cope.

Style It: Three Easy Pieces -- Seven Great Looks!

Oct 31, 2009 by Lee S.

One of the secrets of expanding a small wardrobe is to make sure that each piece you buy can be worn with something you already have. Let's look at Zappos.com for three easy pieces, and then think about how you can wear each one with something already in your closet.

Everyone needs a good pair of trousers, and these "Jackie" wide leg pants from Liz Claiborne do the trick. They're denim with a classic cut and style. The flat waistband sits at the natural waist, and the hems of those wide legs are cuffed. These are classic pants you can dress up or down, and wear with almost anything.

The second piece of this outfit is this stylish scoop-line top from MICHAEL at Michael Kors. It has a flowing design to make it comfortable, and that scoop neckline is dressed up with little round studs. Its vivid red coloring is the perfect complement to the dark pants.

Finally, layer the top with another Liz Claiborne piece; this stretch denim peacoat is all about style, with a double breasted three-button front, pointed collar, and welt pockets. The cuffs have a button accent, and the jacket has a back vent for ease of movement.

Put the pieces together, and you've got a great outfit. But look at them separately and see what else they can do. The pants can dress down with a colorful tee, or dress up a bit with a long-sleeved shirt (think Tommy Bahama or BCBGirls) left out or tucked in. You can top the shirt with a cardigan when cooler temperatures arrive.

The peacoat, in navy denim, is a neutral that can top almost anything in your closet. If you have a sheath dress (look at the ones from Hype for ideas), top it with the jacket before you put it away for fall, and keep wearing the summer dress through the next season. Finally, the Michael Kors top would be perfect over white pants or capris for a bright summer look.

Now you've got three easy pieces and four stylish looks. Does life get any better?

Building a Wardrobe: Updating Older Pieces with Accessories

Oct 16, 2009 by Eisla Sebastian

One of the challenges of building a wardrobe is keeping up with fashion trends. As you collect clothing items it is not uncommon to eventually find yourself standing in front of a closet that is full of clothes that are out of date but that still have a lot of wear left in them. If you want to get more wear out of these quality items then you need to learn how to update older pieces with accessories and styling.

Accessorizing Within Jewelry
One of the easiest ways to update the look of an older dress, shirt or suit is to use jewelry. Necklaces in particular can be very helpful at modifying the look of a clothing item to make it more modern and chic. For example, the style of the necklace, its length, its colors and the size of the beads on the necklace will influence how modern or stylish your new outfit will look. To modernize the look of your wardrobe just select a necklace that is fashionable for today's standards and that also compliments the colors of your older wardrobe pieces.

Accessorizing With Belts
Belts are a great fashion styling item. They can be used to change the shape of an older piece of clothing to make it more fashion forward. Belts are also relatively inexpensive so you can afford to invest in multiple pieces. The height of the belt, its color, its buckle design and its general pattern will be useful in updating the look of an old suit, an old shirtdress or an older pair of slacks. You can also use belts to add a punch of color to an otherwise neutral outfit. If you are losing weight, belts can be used to modify your clothes' fit until you are ready to buy a smaller size.

Other Accessories
Hats, scarves, gloves and leggings are other accessories that you can use to modernize your out-dated wardrobe. All of these items are relatively inexpensive so it is okay to buy trendier looks. You will need them to be trendy as they will be what update the look of your outfits. As you buy accessories, however, think about what you are going to be comfortable wearing. If you are not a rhinestones and leopard print type of person don't buy accessories with these design features. Remember your wardrobe is supposed to reflect who you are.

Easy Fashion Tips: Spring and Summer trends with a Twist

Oct 15, 2009 by Yissel C.

Fall has arrived and so have fall trends. However, some spring/summer looks are rolling over into the new season with an added winter twist. The simplistic look of a classic white t-shirt worn over a pair of distressed denim remains a strong look. But fall is all about outerwear and this year, designers are giving us plenty of variety to style with.

To take your effortless t-shirt and jeans look from day to night, simply add one of this season's most sought after jackets. Sequence jackets are already all the rave, this look has recently been inspired by signature stage costumes worn by the late King of Pop. Jackets with embellishments on the shoulders are also a strong look for the season. These eye-catching jackets provide the right amount of glamour to make any simple outfit shine. Finish this look with a sexy pair of ankle booties and clutch and you'll look red carpet ready in an effortless way.
Boyfriend blazers continue to be in the spotlight. Heavier emphasis on the detailing, like the lining on the cuff sleeves, will be the newest design to revamp this jacket. This jacket is still worn best draped over a pair of shorts; of course, try this look with a pair of over the knee boots to coordinate this style with its current season. The crop motorcycle jacket is another returning contender. Look for this jacket to draw additional attention to the exposure of zippers, another revolving trend of seasons past.

Military jackets may be the most influential jacket of all for fall. Designers like Vivian Westwood are creating strong silhouettes with a huge focus on exquisite detailing. Free people adds a feminine touch to its military jacket by adding ruffles along its closure while Moschino's military jacket features all the bells and whistles including an asymmetrical button closure, tri-tone stripes at the collar, pockets and sleeve ends, not to mention extended shoulder accents, proving once again, that shoulders play a significant role in fashion this season.

Celebrity Gossip: Avril gets Divorced

Sep 23, 2009 by Tiffany B

After several months of rumors of a separation between singer Avril Lavigne and musician Deryck Whibley it appears that the rumors were in fact true. Avril took to her blog to let everyone know that she and her husband Deryck are separating. After writing some things about how she "admires" him and still loves him with all her heart, she writes, "Deryck and I are separating and moving forward on a positive note." Unfortunately, it also appears that Avril is making up the "positive note" part. According to an inside source, "she dumped him and told him she was leaving him." The sourced added, "divorce papers will be filed any day now," and that Whibley is "crushed." Avril had been seen just a few weeks ago enjoying time on the beach with other guys and her husband was nowhere in sight. The couple married young as she was only 21 when they got married and was 19 when they started dating. It appears this is another Hollywood (or wannabe Hollywood) marriage gone horribly wrong.

Kate Gosselin from Jon and Kate Plus 8, may be losing a husband but may be gaining an awesome job as a talk show host. According to Radar online, the reality star is said to be teaming up with Food Network star Paula Deen for a talk show that is completely focused on moms. The proposed show has a mixture of beauty, health, and parenting tips mixed in with some celebrity gossip. Apparently they are now looking for other women for the show to talk to and they want all the women to be moms. A few months back Kate had told Entertainment Weekly, "There are no mom-centered talk shows. I think that would be a very comfortable thing for me." A rep for Telepictures would not deny nor confirm that the show was currently in the works. Kate has said that she would do anything to provide for her 8 kids, well apparently that means being a talk show host. Really, how hard could that really be and does this mean she will be moving from their million dollar home as well?

Building a Wardrobe: Starting a Collection of High Heel Shoes

Sep 18, 2009 by Eisla Sebastian

As you mature from girl to young woman and then from young woman to business woman, your shoes will need to evolve in your wardrobe. The high heel shoe is going to be a staple for your grown-up wardrobe. High heeled shoes are sexy, dressy and fun, but if you select the wrong high heel shoe you can end up in a lot of pain.

Fit of the Shoe
The first thing that you need to do when buying high heel shoes for the very first time is to have your foot measured. You need to know your foot length and its width. These measurements will help you to select high heel shoes that are going to compliment the natural shape of your foot. It will also help you to find a shoe that will be comfortable. If you are teetering between two sizes it is generally a better idea to move up a size than it is to buy the half size, especially if you are new to wearing high heel shoes. However, if they feel too loose when you try them on you can go down to the half size.

Height of the High Heel Shoe
High heel shoes come in multiple heights. They range from very low heels, like the kitten heel, to very tall heels that can be six plus inches tall. It is usually recommended that you start off with a short heel and work your way up, but you may have better luck if you try on several heights and decide which angle feels the most comfortable to you. Sometimes a higher heel will create a more natural arch in your foot and be more comfortable to walk in than a lower heel.

Style of Your High Heel Shoes
After you have the fit and the height selected you can move on to something a bit more fun, the style of the high heel shoes. High heel shoes come in an almost unlimited number of styles. There are open toe, rounded toe, pointy toe, lace ups, strappy heels and clogs. There are also wedges, stiletto heels and chunky heels. In addition to shape and pattern differences there are also choices to be made about the color and the finish of the shoe.

Buying Your Shoes
If you are just starting to build your high heel collection then you will want to buy one pair of basic black high heels. These no frill shoes will go with most of your evening and work outfits. Next you will want to select a shoe for a day look. You can select a lighter colored neutral high heel shoe for this. After you have your basic day and evening shoes you can select shoes that are more exciting and that will be used to complete specific outfits.

Wear This, Not That: Cardigans are good for you!

Sep 15, 2009 by Pam Gaulin

Streamlined Sweaters, Not Clunky
Forget last year's bulky sweaters with larger-than-life triangle collars and buttons worthy of an elementary school bulletin board. Opt instead for a sleek and streamlined cardigan. Rather than a torso shortening collar, this fall's cardigan lengthens you with long columnar draping in the front, ideal for pairing with your favorite leggings.

Monochromatic, Not Complementary
Make your mornings easier and pick out a monochromatic outfit one or two days this week. Dress from head to toe in one hue, from earrings to shoes, and revel in the accolades and approving nods. The color does not have to be a citron or red, but try something other than black.

Ethnic Prints not Factory Shapes
Get rooted with ethnic prints in your wardrobe. Replace your favorite plaid with prints resembling woven fabric.

Over the Knee Not Under
If you were floored by the high knee-grazing boots of seasons past, you will love the new over-the-knee boots. Pull off the look with a pair of warm velvet over-the-knee stockings, or embrace the look with thigh high boots. The key to wearing over-the-knee boots gracefully and with style is choose a pair of flat, neutral colored boots. It's okay to wear with a short skirt or dress, but arms and decolletage should be covered up. Let the attention fall to the boots and your legs.

Squares over Rectangles
Going back to elementary school for a moment, opt for square-shaped, compact handbags over rectangular ones.

Dark Lenses, Not Rose Colored Glasses
You can still look at the world through rose-colored glasses, but only proverbially. For hip eye wear, choose the sunglasses with strong frames, worn by movie fashion icons from Audrey Hepburn in the 1960s to Tom Cruise in the 1980s. Don't worry, though, you can still match them to your outfit thanks to Wayfarer's new colored frames.

Belted Coats not Loose Coats
Your transitional season coat should be belted, buttoned and rest mid-thigh, perfect for wearing with your favorite skirt or leggings and to protect you from cool Autumn breezes.

Celebrity Style Mashup: Classy Meets Casual

Sep 15, 2009 by Pam Gaulin

Two actresses featured in films at the 66th Venice International Film Festival provide the inspiration for a classy and casual celebrity fashion mashup: Eva Mendes and Chloe Sevigny.

While it's possible that Eva Mendes and Chloe Sevigny met up at the 66th Venice International Film Festival, what would happen if their luggage had been swapped?

Classy Lady: Eva Mendes
Eva Mendes is one of those breathtaking Hollywood beauties that does not get enough camera time. She exudes classic Hollywood glamour and is a true fashion icon for any well-heeled woman. Recently she strolled down the red carpet with Nicolas Cage at the Venice Film Festival. Her eye make up was toned down and she wore her hair straight, parted in the middle and highlighted.

Most at home in a formal dress or matching pant suit, Eva Medes was born to wear white. She is also often seen wearing solid colors and monochromatic outfits. The star who describes herself as environmentally-conscious could wear this stretchy white skirt with a champagne tank top, giving her a more casual look.

Art Film Chic: Chloe Sevigny
Another not-often seen but always admired actress is Chloe Sevigny. Her fashion style fits her movie roles: more artsy and creative, as she thinks outside the hat box. Chloe Sevigny should continue to include quirky elements in her outfits, while adding classic pieces and designer wear. Her current style has moved from art house to coffee house, and it seems more relaxed and casual. She can wear a fitted jean jacket with a short designer dress.

Similar to Eva Mendes, Chloe Sevigny is one of those actresses blessed with long legs and she wears shorter dresses and skirts to show them off. Eva Mendes emphasizes her legs by wearing longer, sometimes below-the-knee skirts which hug her curves.

A Week in Venice
Even if their luggage had been swapped, Chloe Sevigny and Eva Mendes will be turning heads long after the film festival fanfare fizzles.
