Two TV stars with Retro appeal graced the 2009 Primetime Emmys: January Jones and Kristin Chenoweth. Ironically, it was Kristin Chenoweth, co-star of the now-cancelled Pushing Daisies that went home with an Emmy, rather than Mad Men's January Jones.
Both women are winners, though, as anyone can see by the keen fashion sense of their characters. January Jones as Betty Draper and Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook. Chenoweth even praised the show of her Retro counterpart when she exclaimed, "I'm not employed now so I'd like to be on Mad Men."
Retro Femininity at its Best
In a time when women have seen and bared almost all for fashion, the Retro femininity of both Betty Draper and Olive Snook are a welcome change of pace. In the world of form-fitting dresses with high collars and no sleeves and below-the-knee hemlines and high heels, the occasional flared skirt on a waist-emphasizing dress, these women know how to work a dress.
January Jones as Betty Draper
The look of Betty Draper is complete and without surprise, yet completely fresh and interesting. Her outfits take cues from one perfect dress. Adding gold metallic heels to a silk dress ensemble with matching earrings is one way to pull off the Betty Draper look. Add a pair of gloves, regardless of the temperature, a matching coat and handbag and you're ready to hit the town.
Additional accessories could include a neatly tucked neck scarf, a headband to keep hair perfect, and a necklace. While Betty Draper is the look of perfection, there is a longing in her eyes, and a distant coldness.
Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook
Olive Snook provides the breath of fresh spring air as a counterpart to Betty Draper. The petite Kristin Chenoweth can pull off the feminine dresses and adds a bit of quirky to her style. No Olive Snook outfit would be complete without a pair of black pumps that you can wear on any occasion.
