How to Wear Colored Heels Properly: Pair them with a Little Black Dress!

If you have never worn a pair of colored heels before then the perfect way to start wearing some awesome colored heels is by pairing them with a black dress. Colored heels are a great way to spruce up a little black dress for just about any event.

The reason why wearing colored heels with a black dress is the best place to start is because every color goes with black, with maybe a few exceptions when it comes to fashion. You can pair a red pair of heels just as well as a purple pair with a black dress. It all depends on your personal style and what color shoe attracts you.

The most common colored heel that we normally see with a black dress is red. A red shoe will definitely draw attention to your legs, so if you are not into showing off your legs, you may want to avoid a pair of bright red heels. A red heel adds an interesting contrast to a black dress and can be worn to just about any event, such as a cocktail party, a wedding, or even to a work party.

If you are willing to be a little more daring and take on a more stylish approach than just red heels, try branching out with different colors. For example, hot pink is a really popular color now and with a black dress, just about anyone can rock hot pink heels. Another trendy color is purple. Unlike hot pink, purple is a little more subdued but definitely will still get you on the best dressed list. Some other colors to consider with a black dress are green and yellow.

With a black dress you can also choose to wear multi-colored or patterned heels as well. A really trendy fashion style is a black dress with a pair of leopard or zebra print heels. Look for patterns and prints that have unusual colors such as an animal print with red coloring as well.

If you have wanted to try your hand at wearing colored heels, try out this fashion trend with a little black dress and you may just end up wanting to explore new options for your fancy colored heels.

Evolution of Clothing and Shoes: The Little Red Dress Grows Up

Sep 25, 2009 by Pam Gaulin

Women know all about the little black dress and probably have a collection of them in their closet. But what about the red dress? Red dresses have strong connotations of power and sexuality. The red dress has evolved from a wild exclamation to a more modest but still powerful fashion statement in movies and on TV.

Fictional Ladies in Red
From fictional images of the innocent Little Red Riding Hood to the cute and sexy cartoon Betty Boop, it's hard not to run through a pop culture flipbook of red dresses in your mind. Most recently Number Six on Battlestar Gallactica, as played by Tricia Helfer is the most sultry woman in red.

Before Number Six, Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek wore a signature red dress uniform. The dress was short, and paired with black boots. The dress had long sleeves and a black collar, under the collar bone. Lt. Uhura was a strong female character on the show, allowed to be both smart and have sex appeal.

In 1938, Bette Davis plays a rebellious woman who throws conventionality to the wind and wears a red dress to a society dance, causing a scandal, in Jezebel.

In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Cate Blanchett wears an elegant red dress, in a Retro 1940s style. While the dress is modest, it's used to represent the passion between Brad Pitt's and Cate Blanchett's characters. The symbolism works because of the moviegoers' collective association, built on all previous incarnations of the red dress on film. The dress represents sexuality, power and passion.

Red Dresses Now
The First Lady wears subdued red suits modestly tailored, making red and the red dress an acceptable choice for all women. Formal red dresses have raised the bustline and dropped the hemline, upgrading red to a positive choice even for modest party goers. Adding a patch of pattern to a red dress adds an element of sweetness to a red dress.

Wear This, Not That: Black is the New Silver

Black is the New Silver
We all love the little black dress, our black heels and our black skirts, but what color are your accessories? Black is in, from black bangles to beaded black necklaces, black accessories are making the grade this fall.

The appeal of black jewelry is that the shapes and designs can be intricate and heavy, and because they are black and not a bright color, they look chic not gaudy. Necklaces of 20 or more beaded strands or large pendants in black work with office attire, rocker chic club wear and casual tops with jeans.

Pre-Layered Separates
Easy layers are being created on separates, and layering your own is now optional. Skirts and dresses, in shell, ivory and silvery grays are layers of chiffon or tulle, and flower petal-like shapes, giving outfits volume without adding the bulky layer of separates. Even handbags are being designed with bold and layered flaps and thick and visible seams.

Vertical, Not Horizontal
It would be a dream if designers would abandon the horizontal stripe altogether, but for now fashionable women can continue to embrace the vertical lines created by draped fabric on tops, heavily pleated skirts, and column-like dresses.

Loosen Up with a Long Tank
A low scoop shirt with a racer back creates a subtle vertical line. A loose, light gray tank with a comfortable, airy fit is a must for the end of summer and fall. You don't have to worry about anyone trying to count your ab muscles in these comfortable tops, and you will forgive yourself for the morning croissant and skipped workout. Wear these tops as is, sleeveless, with jeans or dress it up with a skirt.

Emphasize feminine hips with a flattering tapering on the bottom of the shirt. Or wear a low belt on a long tank top, and add a white top underneath, with long sleeves, for a casual work outfit. For a day of shopping, wear the long tank with a pair of tights and some comfortable shoes.

Importance of Clothing in Film: Breakfast at Tiffanys

Mar 25, 2009 by Racheline M.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is, of course, one of the most iconic films for fashion of all time. It brought us the little black dress and the conviction that anyone can pursue their dream of being a New York socialite no matter how unlikely and have an oddly great time in the process.

The story of the film's costumes, however, is one of legendary Hollywood revenge. Just like in Hepburn's earlier film Sabrina, Givenchy had been hired to design her gowns. After all, Hepburn was a former model of his, and he loved the idea of a rising star showing off his clothes. Givenchy became, of course, the creator of the little black dress for which Breakfast at Tiffany's is so famous.

Sabrina, however, had led to cruel results for Givenchy, when Edith Head, the costume designer who hadn't designed all of the costumes (or any of the real standout show pieces used in the Paris sequences) won an Oscar for Givenchy's work and never acknowledged his part in the film's look. The studio even helped her cover it up! So when it was time for Head and Givenchy to work on the same project again, Givenchy made a point to protect his interests. Head's credit line on the film wound up being merely "wardrobe supervisor," which was a huge demotion for her.

Don't feel too bad for Head though, not only did she win more Oscars than any other woman and garner an amazing thirty-four nominations in her career, she got her first costume design job in film using sketches she'd borrowed from someone else!

Luckily we can all borrow the idea of the little black dress from this classic film, and there's truly no better time than now, with the current resurgence of interest in late-50s and early 60s vintage looks thanks to the current crop of Hollywood period pieces, which should ensure that sophisticated simplicity is a major fashion statement for some time to come.

Clothing Sizes and You: What Kind of Body Type Am I?

Jan 29, 2009 by Stephanie Modkins

*One-size-fits-all clothing*? It's a concept that I have hated all of my life. I was always too tall -- too something -- to really take advantage of clothing with this kind of tag. So, I had to pay the extra money in order to get a similar item that fit. Yet, through the years, I have learned that sometimes one size actually does fit all.

For women, the idea of one size fitting all can be translated into clothing items or accessories that accentuate every gal's wardrobe. Regardless of your shape or size, they upgrade or increase our fashion clout. Below is a list of the top five. They are items you should consider adding to your wardrobe this year.

A New Headband
They are bejeweled, checkered, patterned, zigzagged and complement a variety of hairstyles and face shapes. You should add an array of headbands to your accessory drawer to help on those bad hair days.

A Classic Pair of Jeans
They can carry you through a variety of social situations. Match a cute tee and pair of sneakers with a pair of jeans for the big game or a pretty blouse and pair of heels for a date.

A Little Black Dress
You can dress it up with a scarf, necklace or pin. It can be your signature outfit for events or that stand in when you can't find the right outfit.

A Pair of Diamond Hoop Earrings
Whether you get a pair that's big or small, they add a bit of flare to an outfit. Don't sleep on this tip, especially if you have a tendency to look outdated.

A Pretty Pair of Sandals
Forget about buying another classic pump. Invest your money in a pretty pair of sandals. Matched them with a fresh manicure and pedicure to upgrade almost any look.

Purchase these five items and you will start your 2009 out right and in style.

Celebrity Style: Handbags, Little Black Dresses, and Liquid Latex Leggings

Dec 2, 2008 by Tiffany B.

Follow the latest celebrity fashion trend by carrying about a handbag that makes a statement. This can mean a large tote handbag or even a smaller handbag that is a bold color, has beads or has a bold print. This season celebrities are letting their handbags speak for themselves. Choose a large, red, striped handbag like Blake Lively was seen carrying. Or you can go with a beautiful clutch that is covered in metallic sequins like the one by Be & D. This is actually one of the more doable celebrity fashion trends to follow because there are plenty of statement handbags that you can buy. Also, you don't have to be worried about it drawing as much attention to you as a statement top would. It's a more subtle statement.

Every woman knows that you can't go wrong with the little black dress. Well, celebrities are no exception on this one. You can find a little black dress popping up on every red carpet in Hollywood. Such celebrities as Charlize Theron, Kelly Ripa, Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Klum and Reese Witherspoon have all worn the little black dress and done it with style. When looking for your little black dress, look towards the celebrity style and find one that stands out a little bit. Maybe it's belted at the waist with a gold belt or has pleating in the front. Making your little black dress a little more interesting is a great way to stand out and still fit in at every event. This is a great time of year, with Christmas parties and events coming up, to invest in your little black dress.

One celebrity fashion trend that may take some more guts to pull off is the liquid latex leggings. These leggings appear as if they have been basically glued on to your legs. They appear to be leather but are actually latex. Celebrities such as Rihanna, Kate Moss, Lauren Conrad and Alicia Keys have all been rocking these leggings. But beware; these leggings are not for the ordinary, everyday person. They are for the person who wants to be noticed and get attention!
