Easy Fashion Tips: Put a Spring in Your Step with Flowers, Seashells and Super Wedge Heels

The warmer months are finally here, which means it's high time you traded out those jeans and full-sleeved shirts for capri shorts, mini dresses and tank tops. Since it's time to bare it all for Spring break and to count down the days to summer, you can get a head start by picking up some Spring-inspired sandals for the season. This year's top fashion trends include lots of feminine flair, which means it's time to go all out with flowers, ruffles, feathers and fun girly-girl accents.

This season's lineup of the hottest sandals include cork wedges and flats embellished with oversized jewels, and fun flats accented with seashells. Here are a few more ideas for adding some seasonal pizazz to the closet:

1. Croc-inspired slides. Skip the patent leather and plain buckles this season in favor of some flashy, crocodile leather slides. These are great for going out for a weekend brunch or for jetting off on a fun shopping trip with the girls.

2. Seashell ankle-strap sandals. If you can't go to the beach, why not bring the beach home to you? Stuart Weitzman's Shelly Sandals will help you do just that with their soft nappa or calf leather bands and cluster of seashells, fresh from the sea shore, trimming the top.

3. Super wedge heels. Forget about the conservative 2" wedges and reach new heights with 4"+heels decked out in oversized jewels or flowers. Like these Dccyclops by Stuart Weitzman. They're a real head turner with the super-stacked heel and chic espadrille-inspired design. Pair these up with a minidress or short-short skirt of the season and you'll be the life of the party.

4. Open-toe ballerina flats. If you've become a fan of the flats, or just want to give your calves a break this season, slide into a pair of open-toed flats made with patent leather straps. These are perfect for those picnics in the park and relaxing on the sands.

5. Festive thong sandals. Dress up any plain-Jane outfit with a rich leather upper covered with chrome, foil and metallic embellishments. Metallics are back for another season and are sure to add a little sass to your step this Spring.

Office Style: Choosing Sandals for the Office

Aug 20, 2009 by Sabah K.

If you're working in a professional environment, the boss may allow open-toed shoes and sandals on casual Friday or for certain special events. If you work in a business-casual or very casual environment, you might be able to get away with sandals five days per week during the summer. Either way, you still need to pick a pair of sandals that will complement your office attire and keep you cool and comfortable all day long. Here's how to choose a pair of sandals that lean towards a more professional look for your office days:

Neutral-toned sandals in black, beige, or white are a good investment for your shoe closet this summer because they're so versatile. You can wear them with pencil skirts, tailored capri pants and even some types of dresses at the office, without drawing too much attention to your legs.

Ankle strapsandals are a great way to get some extra support you need at the office and keep the 'flip-flop noise' to a minimum. This season's gladiator sandals may work well for casual office environments, and many are designed with extra straps that provide plenty of support.

Try cork heels with capri pants or skirts if you want to add some height. Cork wedges may be too much for the office, but a skinny cork heel or cone shaped heel can add a classy touch to your outfit. Just make sure you stick with the 2 to 3-inch heel range to keep your look somewhat professional.

If you want to wear a dressy sandal, stick with a low-heel flat or kitten heel to add some height without going overboard. Dressy sandals with criss-cross straps, jewel embellishments or shiny patent leather bands are great ways to add a stylish twist to your look this summer.

Finally, if you work at a job that requires you to be on your feet for most of the day, invest in a pair of slides or wedge heels with an extra-padded footbed. These will keep you comfortable throughout the day with the extra support you need.

If wearing sandals at the office is allowed in your work environment, you still need to pay attention to the design, colors and style to make your chosen pair complement your semi-professional or professional wardrobe. Stick with these sandal styles to maintain an office-friendly look this season.

Celebrity Gossip: Salma Hayek Ties the Knot for the Second Time This Year

Salma Hayek has officially tied the knot (for the second time) with French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, and the beautiful wedding took place in Venice, Italy on April 25, 2009. The couple exchanged vows at La Fenice, one of Venice's historic opera houses. Valentina, the couples' 19-month-old-daughter, played her part as the flower girl, and Francois-Henri's son and daughter, ages 10 and 8, helped with the ceremonies. Over 150 guests attended this celebrity wedding, and the VIP guest list included the likes of Charlize Theron, France's former President Jacques Chirac, Penelope Cruz, Anna Wintour and Woody Harrelson.

The theme of this fabulous event was even more romantic with the 'The Carnival in Venice' masked ball; guests were asked to dress head to toe in black, and sport a gold mask as soon as they arrived at the gates. Salma Hayek arrived in a beautiful navy and blue gown and a pair of criss-cross strap stiletto sandals. The ball took place in an historic courtyard, a place that was once used as a trading spot and marketplace by merchants during the 15th century. It was a grand event that gave guests a chance to have fun and dance under the stars.

Interestingly enough, this was the couple's second wedding celebration of the year. The first wedding took place over Valentine's Day in Paris, but Wedding Number Two was designed just for Italy and brought together the couple's closest family and friends for a fun adventure through Venice's most notable sights. The rehearsal dinner took place at the Punta Della Dogana, a regal building that guards the south entry of the Grand Canal in Venice.

People Magazine reports that this wedding cost nearly $2 million; Salma Hayek wore a stunning Balenciaga wedding gown by Nicholas Ghesquiere, and she carried a bouquet of orchids and stephanotis covered with crystals.

The couple's guests were given a grand tour of Italy the day they arrived, and were spotted all over the city doing some last-minute shopping, enjoying some classic Italian food at local eateries, and soaking up the sun. It was an extravagant and joyful weekend that gave both the wedding guests and the happy couple a chance to enjoy the best of beautiful Venice.

Clothing Sizes and You: What Kind of Body Type Am I?

Jan 29, 2009 by Stephanie Modkins

*One-size-fits-all clothing*? It's a concept that I have hated all of my life. I was always too tall -- too something -- to really take advantage of clothing with this kind of tag. So, I had to pay the extra money in order to get a similar item that fit. Yet, through the years, I have learned that sometimes one size actually does fit all.

For women, the idea of one size fitting all can be translated into clothing items or accessories that accentuate every gal's wardrobe. Regardless of your shape or size, they upgrade or increase our fashion clout. Below is a list of the top five. They are items you should consider adding to your wardrobe this year.

A New Headband
They are bejeweled, checkered, patterned, zigzagged and complement a variety of hairstyles and face shapes. You should add an array of headbands to your accessory drawer to help on those bad hair days.

A Classic Pair of Jeans
They can carry you through a variety of social situations. Match a cute tee and pair of sneakers with a pair of jeans for the big game or a pretty blouse and pair of heels for a date.

A Little Black Dress
You can dress it up with a scarf, necklace or pin. It can be your signature outfit for events or that stand in when you can't find the right outfit.

A Pair of Diamond Hoop Earrings
Whether you get a pair that's big or small, they add a bit of flare to an outfit. Don't sleep on this tip, especially if you have a tendency to look outdated.

A Pretty Pair of Sandals
Forget about buying another classic pump. Invest your money in a pretty pair of sandals. Matched them with a fresh manicure and pedicure to upgrade almost any look.

Purchase these five items and you will start your 2009 out right and in style.

Flip-Flops Are Not Just For the Beach, My Friends

Jun 4, 2008 by MJM

Summer time is fast approaching (despite the rain I've got in my neck of the woods), and my thoughts are turning longing toward my comfort "around town" and "on the beach" shoe of choice: the flip flop sandal. My husband despises the flip flop sandal, with its casual revelation of almost the entire foot. Not to mention the "slap-slap" sound it makes as I walk. But....my love for the flip-flob continues

The flip flop is arguably the oldest shoe in the world. It has stood the test of time, and is the best selling type of shoe in the world. Flip flop sandals can be seen everywhere, from the streets of New Zealand to the beaches of the French Riviera and everywhere in between. They range in look from utterly simple to more elaborate, dressy varieties.

Simple construction of flip flop sandals

The simplest -- and cheapest -- construction of flip flop sandals use rubber as the material of choice. A thin rubber sole is cut out and manufactured, and then two thin straps are attached. These straps are placed on the sandal so that they are between the big toe and the second toe. These straps can be made of rubber as well. Sometimes, the Y shaped straps are connected at the base, and then spread out into two separate straps. Sometimes, the straps truly are separate. The straps are usually anchored somewhere at the bottom of the flip flop sandal. On thicker soled flip flop sandals, the straps are anchored at the bottom of a top piece and then a bottom sole cushions the whole. In developing countries, rubber flip flop sandals are most popular, since they are very inexpensive. And, of course, in most developed countries, flip flop sandals are a favorite on the beach or on a casual day out.

Dress flip flop sandals

But flip flops have moved beyond casual and beach wear. Now there are dressy flip flop sandals (some makers of nylon hose stockings have started adding gaps so that they can be worn with dress flip flop sandals). These dressy sandals are made with different materials: hemp straps, patent leather parts, suede, metallic looking parts and other materials that take the flip flop sandal beyond rubber. Additionally, some dress sandals include embellishments of jewels, buckles and beads. In their dressy incarnation, these sandals are rarely referred to as "flip flops." But even though they are becoming more popular as dress shoes, flip flop sandals are getting some bad press. Remember when some of the girls from the Northwestern Women's Lacrosse team wore flip flop dress sandals to visit the White House? Lamentations on the order of the end of Western civilization ensued.

While I wouldn't wear flip flop sandals as dress or formal wear, I still find them quite comfortable. And I have no problem with women who want to wear them. But they do still seem a little too...casual...for my taste. But I can't wait to hit the beach with my flip flop sandals!
