Importance of Clothing in Art, Film, TV, Music: Sex and the City

While Sex and the City has been off the air for some time now, its popularity has endured. The recent release of the Sex and the City movie is only one indicator of this, and is, in many ways, the most minor. Where Sex and the City has truly endured is its influence on fashion and the way it has demanded that young women view style as a constant, ubiquitous challenge.

The clothes -- like the apartments -- on Sex in the City were often ridiculously expensive and certainly beyond the means of many of the characters in the early seasons of the show before they had found success. But our heroines, brilliantly styled by long-time New York designer Patricia field, were resourceful shoppers who knew the value of a few outrageous or classic pieces to a wardrobe.

For example, Carrie taught us a trench coat can make any outfit sing, especially when belted tightly and mixed with something fun. Carrie's clothes are all about using conventional bits
of style to be entirely playful.

Meanwhile, Samantha said it all with bright colors plunging necklines and an unmistakable love for her shape. Samantha taught us that dressing for our own enjoyment was a sure way to wow others and that being the center of attention required confidence as much as skin and Samantha showed us plenty of both.

Charlotte, on the other hand, reminds us we don't have to be outrageous to be fashionable. She made preppy cute and interesting again, pairing pale colors with khakis and pearls. Instead of being bland, her pretty look was so completely well-executed that Sex and the City made preppy an aspirational style again.

Finally, Miranda's fashion stood up for quirky women in corporate jobs and reminded us that the definition of sexy is up to us. With short hair and a sometimes androgynous look,
Miranda made corporate clothes interesting but never played by the rules all the time.

Without the fashion sense of Sex and the City, we'd have missed out on the madness for "It bags," giant flower pins, the highest heels worn with absolutely everything and the belief
that high fashion can be, and maybe should be, every day.

Celebrity Style: Members Only? Really?

Jul 8, 2008 by Tiffany B

They always say that fashion tends come back someday and I guess they are right. Celebrities have been seen sporting Members Only jackets. If you are old enough to remember, Members Only jackets were very popular and trendy back in the '80s. Well, the leather and nylon jackets are making a comeback with the celebrities of today.

Fergie was seen sporting a purple nylon Members Only jacket when she performed on The Today Show. She later paired an ivory Members Only jacket with a dress at the premiere of Sex and the City in New York. Other stars, such as Mariah Carey and Miley Cyrus, also have been seen wearing these jackets. Buyer beware, the jackets are not cheap and who knows how long this trend may stay around again.

Most people think that scarves are just for the winter time, but apparently celebrities like to wear them in summer also. So many celebrities have been seen sporting scarves around their neck in the summer months. Now, with some of the heat waves we have been experiencing, I'm not sure this is one trend that I want to follow.

The brand Love Quotes is a very popular pick among celebrities for scarves. Rachel Bilson, Lauren Conrad, Nicky Hilton, Hilary Duff and Amanda Bynes have been seen wearing scarves from Love Quotes. The scarves come in a wide range of colors from cherry pie to haze. They retail for $85. The scarves can be worn several different ways: wrapped around the neck several times. wrapped once and hanging loose and wrapped around the neck and then bundled together in the front.

Red is always a hot color, but more and more celebrities have been seen sporting red on the red carpet. Stars such as Molly Sims, Debra Messing, Christie Brinkley and Renee Zellweger have all worn red dresses lately. Sara Ramirez wore a red David Mesiter strapless dress to a charity auction and she looked wonderful in the dress. If you want to try the red trend, then get ready to attract attention!

Brangelina babies, Charlie's Wedding and Sarah's Used Dress

Did she or didn't she? There are conflicting reports that Angelina Jolie gave birth to her twin babies over the weekend that started when Entertainment Tonight reported the exclusive news. Rumors began to swirl almost immediately including one that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's handlers were denying the story to cover up the fact that the twin babies had been born prematurely and were in the NICU. However People Magazine responded by saying that the reports were false and Entertainment Tonight promptly took down the exclusive story from their website. You mean the tabloids get it wrong sometimes? Shocker!

However once the Brangelina babies are actually born the real question will be which magazine will win the exclusive rights to the babies first pictures. It's said to be between OK Magazine and People Magazine now with bids as high as $15 million! Not that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will actually pocket the money for themselves - they claim to be planning to donate the entire sum to a worthy charity.

TMZ broke the story of Clay Aiken impregnating David Foster's sister, Jaymes Foster-Levy last week. However, there are new reports that this story might not be entirely true. While Jaymes Foster-Levy is a long-time friend of Clay Aiken and most certainly pregnant, there is still the question of whether it really is Clay Aiken's baby.

Denise Richards may be causing a lot of buzz with her new reality show these days, but Charlie Sheen managed to steal the spotlight from her this past weekend by marrying finacee Brooke Mueller. The couple celebrated with 60 of their closest family and friends, including Grey's Anatomy, McSteamy and his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, who actually introduced Charlie to Brooke. Meanwhile, when paparazzi approached Denise and Charlie's daughters, Sam and Lola, about their father's wedding, Denise fended them off by saying the questions were "inappropriate".

Is boyfriend swapping the latest crazy in Hollywood? It appears so. Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz are two of the latest celebs to be taking part in this new (or maybe not so new) trend. Most people know that Jennifer Aniston has recently hooked up with John Mayer, who previously dated Cameron Diaz. But this past weekend Cameron Diaz was spotted out to dinner with Jennifer's ex, Paul Sculfor. Maybe Cameron and Jennifer are just really eco-friendly and believe in recyling everything... even boyfriends.

The Sex and the City movie scored big at the box office on opening weekend, but the moment was somewhat ruined for Sarah Jessica Parker when she found out that her stunning Nina Ricci gown had actually been worn before - by at least two other people. The worst part is that one of those people was Lindsay Lohan herself! Sarah Jessica did take it a bit too far when she called the designer's behavior "unethical". Hmm, seems pretty harsh considering we're talking about a dress.

Sex, Headwear, Gowns and the City

May 15, 2008 by Brett H.

How can you talk about fashion without mentioning "Sex and the City?" When the London premiere of the "Sex and the City" happened on May 12, all eyes were on Sarah Jessica Parker and her hat. She must have been channeling her character, Carrie Bradshaw, or else she just wanted to really stand out. Along with a strapless green Alexander McQueen dress, she wore a Phillip Treacy hat that resembled a person's garden. It even came with a huge flower and two butterflies planted on the top. What I wonder is how did she last all night with that thing on her head and who had to sit behind her during the premier of the movie?

The other three other stars of the movie also attended the London premiere, but Parker's headwear might have out-shined everyone involved.... Kim Catrall, who plays Samantha Jones in the movie, wore a stunning red Vivienne Westwood dress. She was also appropriately dressed to match her character's personality in a vibrant red cocktail dress. Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda Hobbes wore a sleek, long black dress from Calvin Klein. The dress was cut down low in the front, but she still looked very elegant in the dress. Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte York in the movie, donned a vintage bright red dress. With her long brown hair down and her ruby earrings she looked gorgeous on the red carpet.<p>For the actual movie, the well-known stylist Patricia Field returned to dress the cast. You can be sure to see the famous designer's clothing , such as Dior, Vera Wang, and Oscar De LaRenta, make an appearance on the women. In fact, the wedding gown that Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Carrie Bradshaw, is wearing in the advertisements for the movie is a satin Vivienne Westwood creation. In other parts of the advertisement, Carrie can be seen wearing a Burberry belt and sporting a Chanel handbag. In one of the most visible advertisements for the movie, Carrie is seen in a white Ralph Lauren vest and pants with a pink top and black tie.

Anyone wanting to stay on top of the oncoming fashion trends for the oncoming seasons, might want to pay close attention to this flick....keep your eyes peeled!
