Clothing in Film: Kicking it 80s Style

Aug 19, 2009 by Pam Gaulin

Thanks to the late John Hughes and the romantic teen comedies of the 1980s, women learned that you don't have to be a cowgirl to wear a kicking pair of boots. During the mid-80s slouch boots where all the rage. There were even boots made of thin enough material to be worn long, to tied down to create the 80s slouch. White boots, boots with folded leather, and flat boots were all popular during the decade. Slouchy flats, Doc Martens and lace-up flat boots were must-haves for an 80s wardrobe. Luckily for boots, fashions of the 1980s are back.

Lea Thompson in Some Kind of Wonderful
Lea Thompson made it okay to wear boots and shorts, without looking like Daisy Duke. She did have a Western thing going on with her blue Western-style shirt, buttoned to the neck. Her shorts were casual and not tight. While she had plenty of leg to show, the cuffed shorts were appropriate enough for school, at least back in the 1980s.

Sloane Peterson in Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Who did not want Sloane Peterson's white fringe boots in Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Sloane wore a white leather jacket with matching white fringe, which completely made the outfit back in 1986. The blue shirt she wore is a blue similar to the blueberry blue currently in style, and a precursor to the dawn of our preoccupation with a deeper blue, indigo. Similar to Lea Thompson's character, Mia Sara's character also wore a pair of dressy shorts and a thin belt.

Mary Stuart Masterson, Some Kind of Wonderful
The only pair of boots that Watts, as portrayed by Mary Stuart Masterson would wear are a pair of strong and serious Doc Martens. They bring out the best in a pair of cuffed jeans, black belt, blue t-shirt and leather coat.

Molly Ringwald, Times Two
While Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club would have been at home in a pair of knee-high dark brown Frye boots, her character in Pretty in Pink would have gone for a pair of slouchy ankle boots.
