Workout Tip of the Week: Ways to Make Gym Time Count!

You've finally stopped making excuses to get to the gym in the wee hours of the morning, and are committed to sticking with your fitness mantra this season. Congratulations! This is a big step, and one that will pay off in more ways than one. Still, logging in time at the gym is just the beginning; if you find yourself spending hours on the treadmill, elliptical trainer or lifting weights and aren't seeing results, you might not be maximizing your gym time.

Wearing the wrong shoes, skipping the all-important stretching routine, and not eating properly before the workout can make all the difference for your get-in-shape efforts. Here some essential tips for making the most of your time in the gym:

1. Stretch before and after. Stretching before a workout will get your circulation going and make it easier to perform your hardest routines first. Stretching after the workout is just as important; your muscles need to cool down and your mind needs to start winding down to start the recovery process. You'll be fitter and stronger for the next round with this simple routine.

2. Stay hydrated. Dehydration can prevent you from pushing yourself to the max. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water before, during and after your workout so that you can really give it your all.

3. Make sure the shoe fits. If you're not wearing the right size or style of shoe, you could be setting yourself up for injury. Even if you don't hurt yourself, you might not be getting the full range of motion you need to perform those lunges or use the gym equipment properly. Make sure you're wearing the right shoes for the activity at all times.

4. Eat right. Power up your workouts by eating a small serving of lean protein and low carbohydrate snacks right before you hit the gym. You need only a small snack to give you a boost, especially if your goal is to lose weight.

5. Change things up! Doing the same routine over and over is the fast track to a fitness rut, and you'll be burning fewer calories every time. Keep your body challenged with different workouts so you're burning up a calorie storm every time you exercise!

Fitness Resolutions: Logging in More Gym Time in 2009

New Year's resolutions have been made. You're determined to keep up with your commitment to fitness but are you really, really ready to keep up with that gym routine? Finding time to go to the gym can be one of the biggest challenges to better fitness, especially when you're just getting started. Even spending 30 minutes at the gym requires planning - add in the time to get dressed for the workout, drive to the gym, shower and getting back to your regular routine - the whole fiasco can easily take a few hours or more.

So how do you keep up with your fitness resolution this year? Here are some simple strategies for logging in more gym time in 2009:

1. Head out first thing in the morning. Scheduling a trip to the gym first thing means you can focus on just getting there, working out and showering for the day as usual. This can save you extra driving time and hassles in the middle of the day and gives you the chance to kick off the day with a healthy start!

2. Eat a small meal before you go. Fuel up with a small snack to keep blood sugar levels stable and give you the energy boost you need to finish the workout. Choose something packed with protein and a few carbs.

3. Enlist a workout buddy. When someone else is holding you accountable for clocking in at the gym, you're much more likely to go. Work out with a friend or family member to motivate you when the going gets rough.

4. Keep track of your success. Use a workout chart to map out your plan for the week and mark off what you get accomplished; this is a powerful self-motivation strategy.

5. Extend your lunch hour. If you're not able to go to the gym before or after work, request an extended lunch so you can get your mid-afternoon fix and then make up the time later in the week.

And don't forget to drink water all day long. Dehydration can cause fatigue and make it hard for muscles to recover after an intensive workout; pick up a water bottle and sip on water throughout the day to keep your body healthy and strong for your new fitness regimen.

Fitness Resolutions: Fitness Wish List

Dec 19, 2008 by Sabah K.

It's that time of the year when tempting food and long days indoors fill up your daily schedule, leaving you little time to get to the gym or outside for an exercise session. If it looks like next year's New Year's resolution will be dominated by face time with a personal trainer, enrolling in cardio boot camp or trying out a new diet to peel off a few pounds, why not get a head start on your fitness wish list with a few extra trips to the gym?

Clocking in more gym time now means you can ward off excess pounds and prepare your body for Round 2 of your fitness frenzy before the Times Square ball drops. Here are some tips to stay motivated and get going on your fitness plan:

1. Pick out some trendy shoes. Sometimes a quick shopping session can lift your spirits and keep you motivated to finally hit the gym - so why not do it in style? Pick up a new pair of versatile running shoes or cross trainers so you can give yourself an excuse to put them to good use.

2. Pack for success. Load up a gym bag with all the necessities so you're always prepared to head off to the fitness center at a moment's notice. You'll be less likely to skip the gym when you have a bag sitting in the car or right by your door as a constant reminder.

3. Boost your spirits with a new gym outfit. A fresh pair of shorts, capris or other active wear can help you get your gym groove on in no time. Make a commitment to simply get dressed for the gym at a specific time during the day and give yourself only two choices: hit the gym or change back into your regular clothing. When you're all dressed and ready to go, you're much more likely to just get your gym circuit over and done with before you have a chance to quit!

Getting more gym time into your holiday schedule isn't as tough as it seems; just take action with any of these strategies so you can get a head start on your New Year's fitness resolutions.
