Walk the walk with Shane Anderson

Ever thought about walking to work? For some of us, I am quite sure, it wouldn't be too much of a big deal, specifically for those that live close to work. But for those of us that do not live close to work, it would most likely be quite an arduous task. Well, tell that to Shane Anderson.

Shane, who works in Dev as a software engineer, has been with Zappos since December of 2007 and has quickly become both a valued co-worker and friend to many. At the beginning of September, Zappos participated in the 8000 Meter Challenge, a 34 mile hike / race over three mountain peaks in a twenty-four hour period and Shane was a part of that. A couple of weeks before the hike Shane decided to walk to work.

“I was trying to think of ways to train for the eight thousand meter challenge with my busy schedule, so I started looking at biking to work and stuff like that, but then I asked myself what about walking to work, since it was more like a hike,” he reports. “It was kind of like an interesting thought and one of those wacky things that would be kind of cool. There was a coolness factor about walking to work from across town.”

Some may think that walking to work is nothing like a long hike, but when you take into account the distance and elevation change, it really does turn out to be quite an impressive task and great conditioning. Shane lives off of Hualapai and Ann Road, at the extreme north end of town near Centennial Hills.

“So, I looked it up to see how far it'd be,” he begins, “and it was about twenty six miles.” If that doesn't WOW you, nothing will.

“So, I wasn't too sure if I was going to do it,” he continues, “But then one morning I woke up early and I decided to just go do it and so I did it. It was really interesting. It is one of those things where you didn't really realize what the experience was going to be. I knew it was going to be hard, you know the whole walking thing, but the actual experience, what you see in different parts of town, it was really interesting.”

First off, here was Shane's route:

Left house at 4:00am, major cross street Hualapai and Alexander.
Pebble to work. Arrival at 10:20am.

Total time – 6 hours
Total distance – 26 miles

If any of us have ever gone on a walk, we can attest to how the smallest most insignificant things suddenly seem larger than life. “I was walking along and as I was looking down at the bottom of these walls I see they have these little pipes sticking out, you know, for drainage, and in each one of those there was like a spider, you know, spider webs,” Shane explains. “So, I looked into the spider webs and it was really interesting, you'd see these big black widows and some of the webs came way out, so I was way over on the edge of the sidewalk. So, it was interesting to see that they are all waiting for a meal.”

Shane also had an interesting epiphany when it comes to real estate as he was, again, coming off of the Sahara overpass. “As you go across the tracks there was one thing that really stuck out to me and that was a cardboard box with a pair of feet hanging out. And I was like. are they dead or what?

“It didn't look like rigor mortis had set in,” Shane says, “so I didn't feel the need to alert anybody. But you notice a few of those and it just got me thinking back to all the spiders because here you are laying on the ground, next to a fence, in a cardboard box and if I was a black widow that would be a perfect place to do a nest. By then the sun was coming up and I was thinking its gotta be hot under that.”

Through it all, from picketers on Paradise to people sleeping in the bushes on Tropicana and Maryland Parkway; from the giant blisters on his feet to his sweat soaked clothing, Shane did not regret the experience and even says he may do it again sometime when it cools down.

“This was real city stuff,” Shane concludes. And what better way to see it then on a leisurely twenty-six mile, six hour stroll from one side of the valley to another. Real city stuff doesn't get much better than that.

What Happens at Zappos when the Internet is Down?

Sep 30, 2008 by Brett H.

By Alfred L. (COO/CFO), reporting live from ground zero of no-internet anarchy at Zappos.com Headquarters.

We had a little Internet outage today at the Zappos offices for a couple of hours. I was told that some router's firmware puked, whatever that means. There was a time when we were able to put in a full day's work just fine without this thing called the Internet. Those days are officially over -- at least at Zappos. Since we couldn't access our news feeds, personal emails, and internet radio stations...I mean, our corporate emails, servers, and systems, we thought we would have a little fun in the process.

Our Finance team had been planning for a while to have a 10-key Olympics. For those who don't know, we wanted to know who is most proficient at using only their right hand to enter data with the numerical keypad. Pretty geeky stuff, but they had a blast because they are geeks. Given this world of edi, xml, and all sorts of electronic data transfer formats, we seem to still manually enter a ton of data. i guess every now and then smart technology just isn't so smart?

Speaking of smart technology, our development team had been slowly amassing an arsenal of low-tech Nerf weapons of mass destruction over the last few months. it began with small revolver guns with 6 Nerf pellets, but it had escalated to motorized guns with modified banks of Nerf pellets and rubber bands to make the pellets fly further. Since the Development team couldn't connect to their precious code and whatever backdoor games they'd put on our servers, they entertained themselves by shooting anyone who walked by their desks.

As with the rise of any oppressive power, a revolution began, and developed (no pun intended)into a full scare Nerf war. Our finance team invaded their area and just started shooting. I held the door open to the development lair and have scars on my back from all the pellets fired upon me.

Our developers retaliated in full force, pushed the finance team back, disrupted a peaceful gathering of 10-key olympians, and kidnapped a few hostages. An armistice was called when the war started to intrude upon conference rooms where real meetings were being had -- must be those low-tech merchants who don't need the Internet to have a productive meeting.

Others took a more solitary approach to Internet withdrawal.
Keith C. decided to use the time trying to beat his own top score on Bulls-Eye ball 2.
Johnny p. decided to catch up on some much needed shuteye. How does he sleep with the noise of Bulls-Eye Ball 2 in the background and the cries and carnage of his team members in the development lair?

oh, Internet is back up...back to work...got to make up for 2 hours of downtime!

P.S. If you like to work hard and play hard, send us a note and your resume to jobs@zappos.com.

P.P.S. To our investors, your blood might be boiling about the thought of our internet being down, but i assure you that our website was up and running during this outage and still taking orders from customers. ;-)

My Mythology - Laura M. Content Manager for Fashion at Zappos.com

Sep 29, 2008 by Jonathan H.

My Mythology - Creating our own living legacy at Zappos.

One of the joys about working at Zappos is the freedom to be ourselves through our own personal style. Style shouts! Individuals identify themselves through their personal style. Taking the chaos out of the closet and using clothing as a celebration to create personal
mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Laura M., Content Manager for Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2548/laura.jpg

Today Laura is wearing a BCBGeneration top, AG Adriano Goldschmied "Angel" jeans and Vince Camuto shoes.

How would you define your look?

I would say eclectic, mixing and matching vintage with new. I’m really attracted to unique prints and one-of-a-kind items, but I try to sprinkle those in with basic pieces that fit my body type!

What inspires your style?

My mood, I guess! Sometimes I mix together different prints and accessories and leave the house like I got dressed in the dark, while other days I keep it simple with a black top and dark jeans.

Who is your favorite designer?

I don’t really have an answer for this! I appreciate all designers and the spectacle that is Runway, but I don’t really follow any one in particular.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?

A funky, patterned bag and a zip up hoodie!

Who are your fashion/style icons?

I do not follow trends or trendsetters…I’m an instinctual shopper. I buy what grabs my attention!

What are your favorite labels?

I’m not too into labels, but I like BCBG Max Azria, French Connection, anything from ‘Anthropologie’, Moschino

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?

High-Class Hippie!

What is your favorite decade for style?

For me, I find the 60’s and 70’s styles to be wearable and they fit my personality. I love wedges, flared denim, flowing tops. However, my favorite decades for style are actually the 20’s-40’s. I absolutely love those structured dresses and suits, t-strap spectators and fancy hats. Even more, I love red lipstick, matching nails and pin curls. A big part of me wishes that fancy, ever day fashion was still the norm. The bigger part of me loves to throw on a ‘wife beater’, jeans and a pair of Converse. Ooh how my split personalities conflict!

What is your favorite fabric? Modal and pima cotton, for sure!

Keep it comfy. :8}

What is your favorite color?

Right now…blue! Baby Blue and Bright Blue. Navy too!

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?

Denim. I used to snub designer denim and never understood why anyone would pay so much money for a pair of jeans, but after my first pair of Seven for All Mankind jeans I’ve been hooked. I also love AG jeans.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?

I don’t have a first mortgage…possibly because most of my extra cash goes to clothing, shoes and fun stuff for my apartment, rather than saving up for a first.

Diamonds or pearls?

I don’t care much about either! I like funky necklaces with unique charms or beads. I only really wear necklaces and on the rare occasion, a bracelet!

Which bag?

I like Lucky Brand bags a lot. I am not one of those woman who spend hundreds on the ‘it’ bag of the moment. Lucky bags are really good quality and they match my vintage look…

Sunglasses?

Give me a headache!

What are your fashion rules?

It is all about the fit for me! You can be wearing the most expensive outfit, but if it is ill fitting or just doesn’t flatter your shape, it doesn’t matter. It took me a long time to accept the fact that I can’t wear spaghetti straps, tube tops or long skirts. Accentuate the positive and divert attention from the negative!

What is the most you’ve spent on a handbag?

$160 at the most.

Would set foot in a thrift store?

Any time, any thrift store!

If your answer was yes, what is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?

A really cool vintage bag. Luggage leather, drawstring bag with a long strap. It was my favorite bag up until an ex-boyfriend spilled juice all over it.

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?

Beautiful tan Hugo Boss boots (about 230$).

Dev and Finance Go to War on Thursday

Sep 26, 2008 by Brett H.

Las Vegas, NV--On Thursday afternoon, the rebels of Finance crossed the border into Dev. to attack in fear of a preemptive strike, but were eventually overwhelmed by the Dev Forces.

The attack was prompted by sheer boredom when the Internet went down for a short period in the office on Thursday afternoon. After much deliberation, they decided that the risk of a strike from Dev was too great, so the attacked with their large arsenal of Nerf weaponry.

But the size of the Dev army overtook them and they were pushed back over into their border 10 minutes after the invasion.

"They fought like toddlers, really. It was sad," said Lt. Alex K., in a statement to the Zappos.com Blog Team. "Next time, we're coming for them, and there is no turning back," he added.

Below is a video of the attack.

Shark Swimmin'

Sep 25, 2008 by Brett H.

Lynn, our User Experience Queen here at Zappos, is a thrill seeker by nature. She has more energy than our entire blog team put together, I also wanted to point out.

So, Lynn, in her infinite madness, has decided that, for her upcoming vacation, she would kick back, relax, and swim with sharks in the waters near Guadalupe Island. It's one of the worlds capitials for Great White Shark populations.....you know....the kind of shark that Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and the scary boat captain dude were trying to catch. Ahhh....the calm soothing grooves of possible death.

And, since, today is her last day before heading off to 'relax', our design and UX teams decided to comfort her nerves with a homemade shark cage (made with great care by John F. and Sara M.).

Just about everyone in two buildings were in on this, and Lynn seemed to be completely surprised.

Have fun, Lynn. Da-Da.

A Nerf Strike is Imminent in Dev/Finance

Sep 25, 2008 by Brett H.

Las Vegas, NV-- Tensions are rising as our Development team and Finance team are ignoring requests for talk of a cease fire of the ongoing Nerf war. Both teams have given up on peace talks, and the rumors of war are abound.

There has even been talk of a premptive strike against Finance from Development, and these rumors were proven today as Alex K., stated, "We feel that we need to strike before their arsenal of Nerf weapons grows any larger. I don't think we can wait, it might be too late".

Finance has stock piled some large Nerf machine guns and bows and arrows.

There is even infighting in both camps, our reporter Brett Houchin was caught in a crossfire today and it was caught on film.

The Zappos.com Blog Team will be here to keep you filled in on this developing story.

Spin it to Win it, with Dr. Vik!

Sep 24, 2008 by Melissa L.

One thing that makes this company great, (besides the copious amount of shoes and apparel and accessories that we have on our site as well as our free shipping and returns) are the wonderful people behind the scenes that make it all tick. I speak for quite a few when I say that without Dr. Vik (our resident life coach) we wouldn't be the people we are today or wouldn't have the confidence or support to be the people that we are today.

Everyone in the Zappos Headquarters is encouraged to meet with Dr. Vik in order to set a series of goals or to talk about one goal that they want to set and achieve and Dr. Vik helps them focus on getting there.

Everyone's a winner...they just need to believe it for themselves.

Here's a little insight on how to Spin it and win it:

First: You need to brush off and get rid of the 3 things that bind us.

1) Past Baggage: We all have things in our past that tend to pull us down and constantly prevent us from moving forward. Well, the truth is that there isn't a future in the past - so LET IT GO! Just like traveling, life is one wonderful adventure, but if we pack a bag that's impossible to carry we're probably going to give up early and go home. What we should do if we make that common mistake is get rid of the bag all together. You will soon realize that the things you "couldn't live without" are the things we miss the least. So for this life adventure, travel light, that way you don't have to turn down any new opportunities or trinkets that come our way.

2) Improve Self Talk: Really. If your loved ones or co-workers talked to you the way you talk to yourself you would probably stop sending them Christmas cards and request a new work position and/or quit. I, much like many others out there, am my own worst enemy. But guess what? The only person who can change that is you. So from here on out, look in the mirror with confidence and say: "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me." Or say something along those lines. You'll find that your whole day is completely different. Even if you don't believe yourself the first few times you do the 'ol pep talk, just "fake it 'till you make it" because one of these days you will. And you should. Because without everyone else, you're all you got.

3) Self Esteem: Which falls pretty close to improving self talk, but your self esteem gives you the extra bit of confidence to go the extra inch. Never underestimate the powers that come from within. We are all capable of achieving our every goal, even the goals seems unrealistic at this moment in time, they won't once you believe that it is possible. Even if your goal is to lasso the North Star and move it to the South - try it anyway. Because the odds are pretty good that you'll lasso something wonderful and just as fulfilling during your brave attempt.

Things to remember:
Setting goals that are achievable boosts your self confidence, changes the way you see yourself and allows you to stay motivated and moving forward, as opposed to backwards or no where at all. But don't set goals that are too small because then that's you holding yourself back from something more, and you don't want to do that. Do you? Ok, so lassoing a star really isn't the best goal to set for yourself. But, if you do want to get closer to the heavens, start out by climbing Red Rock, NV, then go from there.

One more thing, once we do start our journey in achieving our goals - take weight loss for example - don't start out by cutting your calories in half and beat yourself up every time you get visions of sugar plums in your head. Think 80/20. That way 80% of the time you're keeping yourself on track and 20% of the time you can have that birthday cake without punishing yourself or giving up all together because you were a bit naughty. And most importantly don't let the guilt of your slip up get in the way of achieving your ultimate goal. Guilt often times leads to bad self talk and we don't need any more un-edifying comments in our head than the ones we already have. Ok.

And that, my friends is how we spin 180 degrees away from the road that we've either traveled on before or one that's not worth traveling on at all, and move in the direction of something wonderful, exciting and new.

Thanks Dr. Vik for all that you do for the employees here at Zappos and for being an amazing source of encouragement, confidence and support.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-3170-2541/spinnin-it.jpg

For those of you who haven't taken the moment to speak to Dr. Vik, you should. At the very least you'll get to sit on the thrown, wear a crown and get a fun and beautifully retro Polaroid picture of yourself.

We really didn't mean for it to be. It just happened that way. Melissa and I crossed paths on the way into the office this morning, and to our horror, we were dressed very similar. A few people at Blogworld thought we were siblings, so this isn't helping anything. (She claims that this is impossible because she is much better looking than I)

Then, to make matters worse, I turn a corner and Kris K. had run home just to change just to look like us. (Editor's Note: That's a lie. Kris actually keeps an entire wardrobe in his desk drawers to mimic my outfit every day...it's very frustrating.)

This looks like the cover art for a romantic comedy, doesn't it?

My Mythology - Jen S. Couture Fashion Buyer

Sep 23, 2008 by Jonathan H.

Today we study the mythology of Jen S., Buyer for Couture Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2525/sidary.jpg

Jen S. is draped in a delightful Emilio Pucci tank, a Dolce and Gabbana black skirt and Prada sandals.

How would you define your look?
That’s a hard question since I don’t feel I have just one look. When you asked me to wear my favorite outfit I had a hard time picking just one. I have loved everything in my closet at some point in time.

What inspires your style?
Me, and I hope that didn’t sound bad. I buy amazing pieces from tons of designers from couture to moderate prices. I mix and match them to make my own style. You will rarely see me in one brand from head to toe. What makes style in my mind is to be able to mix it all up and still look like a million bucks.

Who is your favorite designer?
Miuccia Prada…She manages to out do herself with every collection and be so ahead of the trends. The items she designs are classic with so much style but still timeless. I can’t stop myself from buying her pieces season after season.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?
My credit card.

Who are your fashion/style icons?
This may sound silly but the ladies from Sex and the City which really means Patricia Field. She has made so many designers household names, it is incredible.

What are your favorite labels?
DSquared2, Alexander McQueen, Etro, Roberto Cavalli and Prada of course!

Preppy or Punk?
No question…PUNK!

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?
I just like to look and feel good about myself everyday and this is expressed through my fashion choices. If I love what I am wearing I feel amazing!

What is your favorite decade for style?
For me it is always the future. Being a buyer and seeing what’s to come in 6 or 9 months I am more excited about what’s coming than what’s happened.

What is your favorite fabric?
I have 2 extremes…cotton or leather.

Psychedelic ‘60’s or Rockabilly?
Psychedelic.

What is your favorite color?
Green.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?
Sandals and Boots.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?
My mom had me calculate the total of all the footwear in my closet and I could have put a down payment on a house and that was years ago.

Diamonds or pearls?
Diamonds and lots of them.

Marc Jacobs or Alexander McQueen?
McQueen because he is so demented.

Which bag?
Right now it’s McQueen.

Sunglasses?
Right now it’s Prada.

What are your fashion rules?
Don’t ever be over dressed or under dressed!

What is the most you’ve spent on a handbag?
If it’s not $1,000 it’s not a handbag in my world.

Would set foot in a thrift store?
Of course! I took my boss Eileen once in the East Village and she about died.

If your answer was yes, what is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?
A vintage Valentino black dress. It didn’t fit me so I gave it to a customer of mine at my last job. She was ecstatic.

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?
$3,200 for a mini tangerine Prada suitcase. I got it in Rome with my mom.

Stitchnapping!

Sep 22, 2008 by Melissa L.

That's right, a horrible thing has happened here at the Zappos.com HQ. Elvis Stitch, (as in Lilo and Stitch) the action figure has been taken from Kathleen J's desk! First of all, it really is a serious issue when things go missing from co-workers desks. Most of us (including myself) like to kidnap things from others from time to time...but once the laugh is over, give it back.

Here at Zappos we keep fun things on our desk because we can, and our culture encourages it. So please...just like we all learned in Kindergarten, keep your hands on your desk, and your desk only. (Unless you taking something from someone's desk brings about a serious laugh and possibly a fun CSI to go with it.)

BRING STITCH BACK!!!

Zappos Blog World Twitter Party (Part 1)

Sep 22, 2008 by Melissa L.

For those of you who follow our CEO Tony Hsieh (@zappos) on Twitter – which is roughly 13,000 of you – then you got the invite to our exclusive Twitter party hosted at Prive' in the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino, here in our hometown Las Vegas.

@Zappos likes throw parties or Tweet-ups fairly often, but very rarely do the leading personalities on twitter get to join. Blog World Expo 2008 brought bloggers, podcasters, and all types of social media giants from all over together under one big roof in the Las Vegas Convention Center. And that, my blog-reading friends, was definitely something to throw a party about.

This week we will be sending you bits and pieces of our private party containing interviews from quite a few well known people in Social Media circles, as well as just some regular old party-goers, who lucky for them, might get a few more followers on Twitter from this one.

So if you're not a huge social media buff or are having a hard time deciding which blog you will add on to the blogs you already follow religiously, then stay tuned, because we had a lot of web dwelling rock stars at this event.

National Talk Like a Pirate Day @ Zappos!

Sep 20, 2008 by Brett H.

Here at Zappos, we love pirates. We can't help it. Go look at some Twitter names from Zappos employees, you'll see that we have some really big fans of pirates. So, we decided that this madness needs to be documented on this fine holiday. We even had some bloggers from around the country who are in town for Blogworld do the pirate alphabet for us.

Enjoy. Maties.

Back in Wax! The Kids Content Team visits Madame Tussauds

Sep 19, 2008 by Nicole B.

As the Kids Content Team recently discovered, dreams really do come true! Several dreams were realized when we took a little trip to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Nick finally realized his dream of becoming an honest woman with George Clooney, Matt was seen displaying his ultimate nerd-dom with Captain Picard and Chanele, Matt and Nick all got in touch with their gangsta side when I caught them chillin’ with Tupac. However, nothing could prepare us for the big star of the night... Mr. James Brown! Now we finally have our Christmas card photo!

(Editor's Note: If you're wondering what the ghostly apparition is in the middle, it's Steve the Ghost, who showed up just in time to block the wax statue of James Brown that we can't put on our blog. )

Crime Scene!

Sep 19, 2008 by Brett H.

Poor Melissa. She was knocked out of her chair by Brett and his chair. Let me explain.

After the UX team left the room, the fancy J-Chair was left for the taking. Bryan M. claimed it many a month ago, and Brett saw his opportunity. But, there is an issue here. Brett and Melissa sit back to back,(she's in the old Laurie W. spot) and this chair is much bigger than Brett's last chair....and Brett cannot wield the power with responsibility. It's too much. He has spilled three cups of coffee this week just by turning to talk to a fellow Zapponian who was seeking his assistance.

So, this Friday afternoon, Brett hopped in his chair to answer some email and poor Melissa was caught in the cross-fire.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2513/n578497641_1492965_1410.jpg

She is now resting with a nice bowl of Chicken and Dumpling soup and should make a full recovery in 6 or 7 minutes.

Please comment below to wish her well.

Pulled Pork's for Lunch Today!

Sep 18, 2008 by Melissa L.

What's for lunch today!?!

Well, today my dear friends is Pulled Pork Day. That's right, delicious pork stripped apart in a scrumptious sauce....yummy! But the best part about Pulled Pork Day are the delicious accoutrements that go along with it - watermelon slices, rolls, pasta, and potato wedges.

And there is absolutely no connection between river dancing and pulled pork, except for the fact that pulled pork day makes me do a jig!

Meet the Kids Content Team: Episode 2-Amanda The Enforcer Plays Hockey...

Sep 18, 2008 by Nicole B.

Amanda was born in a town that I bet nobody can say five times fast-Monongahela, PA. When she was a child she enjoyed playing hockey, rock climbing and water rafting. She was definitely an adrenaline junkie. When she was a teen she realized that the girl’s hockey team was way more violent then the boys. She loved to play defense because she really got a chance to let out her aggression and hit people. However, every addiction has its consequence, and Amanda felt those consequences when she was checked from behind and received a class III concussion. I guess she should have checked herself, before she wrecked herself! Amanda is so much of an adrenaline junkie that I asked her to put her finger in the light socket just for fun and she totally did it! (Don't try this at home. You might really hurt yourself)

If there is anything that Amanda loves more then hockey it’s definitely grammar. She has taken many classes and frequently throws down with people over the subject. She is always poised and ready for a grammar smack down. So don’t challenge her!

I asked Amanda how she ended up working at Zappos and she replied that she had heard that everyone who works here is crazy, so she immediately thought she would fit in. She loves Zappos because it feels more like a family then just a job to her.

Amanda is a great asset to the Kids Content Team and to Zappos as a whole. She’s a force to be reckoned with, so if anyone’s got a problem with that, you can come talk to her. I’m sure she’ll straighten you right out.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas (or Should I Say 2290)

Sep 17, 2008 by Melissa L.

The conference rooms in the new Zappos 2290 office don't go from a boring ol' empty room to WOW over night. It takes a lot of hard work, creativity and sometimes staple guns and hot glue to pull off these famous meeting areas. The fashion department took on the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Room" as well as "The Elvis Room" and not to mention three others. They're a busy group, but they don't seem to mind too much, the Fashion Merchandisers are known to dress themselves as well, so I wouldn't expect their conference rooms to be any different. I wonder if they'd be willing to give the Creative Service 1 room a face lift.

Way to decorate Fashion Merchandising! Can't wait to see all the 2290 conference rooms once they've been officially made over Zappos style!

My Mythology - Creating our own living legacy at Zappos

One of the joys about working at Zappos is the freedom to be ourselves through our own personal style. Style shouts! Individuals identify themselves through their personal style. Taking the chaos out of the closet and using clothing as a celebration to create personal mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Jonathan H., Sr. Content Coordinator for Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-3082-2502/blog-shot.jpg

Today Jonathan is stylishly sporting a vintage motorcycle jacket that he customized with a John Galliano scarf, safety pins, leopard and plaid fabric and some mementos. He is also wearing a Vivienne Westwood square ring, a Vivienne Westwood crystal orb ring, other random rings, a Nixon watch, a white t-shirt, John Galliano newsprint trousers, an Alexander McQueen keychain (on his belt loop), and Diesel shoes.

How would you define your look?
It depends on the day. Depending on how I feel, I play these roles with my style: a dandy, 1950’s rockabilly, goth, rock star, punk, movie star, Madison Avenue businessman, pirate, Two-tone ska, 1980’s Nu-wave, cabaret entertainer, starving artist, mod, Henry VIII or any of the English monarchy, beatnik.

What inspires your style?
Anyone who is unique and creative, but knows what looks great on him or her and isn’t afraid to show it.

Who is your favorite designer?.
Vivienne Westwood, of course. But Alexander McQueen and John Galliano are my second favorite designers.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?
My Vivienne Westwood square ring. I LOVE IT! I got it at her King’s Road store in London.

Who are your fashion/style icons?
James Dean, Clive Owen, Gary Day (from Morrissey), Marc Almond, Andre 3000, Johnathon Schaech, Peter Murphy, John Galliano, Elvis Presley, Daniel Day Lewis.

What are your favorite labels?
Vivienne Westwood Man, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, C'N'C CoSTUME NATIONAL, DSquared2, King Baby, and Moschino.

*Psychobilly or Emo*?
Psychobilly, baby!!!!

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?
Passionate mystery!

What is your favorite decade for style?
1940 or early 1960.

What is your favorite fabric?
Gabardine, cotton, or leather.

What is your favorite color?
Black and blue.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?
Vivienne Westwood.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?
Yes! I already have!

Do you have any tattoos?
I have a tiger, a panther, a dragon, a Vivienne Westwood logo, a John Galliano skull.

Which bag?
My Vivienne Westwood Abstract Orb bag of course! I carry it everyday!

Sunglasses?
Dior Homme.

What are your fashion rules?
If there are any, break them!

What is the most you’ve spent on a handbag?
$800.00. My Vivienne Westwood Abstract Orb Bag, a gift to myself.

Would set foot in a thrift store?
Of course. I go about every other day.

What is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?
A King Baby chain wallet for $25.00. It’s worth about $3,000.00!!!!!!

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?
My Alexander McQueen suitcase. I think I spent a little over $900.00.

Jennifer P., Sept.12, 2008 Winner!!!

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2501/brenda.jpg

What is your favorite type of shoe and why?

I love any shoe/ boot that demands attention. A little bit shocking, even a little over the top. I know it's a hot shoe when even Zappos people are like "WOW, those are some cool shoes!"

Give me one Core value that you think best represents your fashion statement?

Without a doubt core value # 3: Create fun and a little weirdness. Anyone who knows me can tell you that I live for weirdness. I love living outside the norm! Helping people open their eyes to different options other than the boring old normal way of doing things.

What has been your favorite Zappos fashion Expo so far of 2008?

I actually really enjoyed the Private label expo. It gave me some good insight to upcoming fashion trends.

Fashion Pick- If you could have ANY pair of shoes on the Zappos.com website, which ones would you pick?

These!

Wowza, I say!

More Good Times from our Bone Marrow Drive!

Sep 15, 2008 by Brett H.

On Friday, Zappos.com hosted a Bone Marrow Drive in partnership with the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation in order to try to save the lives of 6 Children in the Las Vegas area who are in need of a bone marrow transplant. We hosted the drive in multiple locations, one here at the Vegas Headquarters and at two of our Zappos Outlets. Many employees answered the call of duty.

The bone marrow mouth swab program was simple, as you can see in the video below. It was some paperwork and then you swab your cheeks and that's it!

Also, later in the afternoon, radio station 98.5 KLUC did a live remote from our offices and rocked the 2280 building. All in all, quite a success. Thanks to everyone!

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Claire S., Merchandising Assistant 3 for Fashion at Zappos.com.

Claire is wonderfully wardrobed in a Trunktank top, D&G Dolce and Gabbana black satin pants and Givenchy shoes.

How would you define your look?
I attempt to do a little of everything (with the exception of athletic- I don’t think anyone looks good in spandex).

What inspires your style?
A little bit of everything I guess. High fashion magazines & ready to wear.

Who is your favorite designer?

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?
A great handbag.

What are your favorite labels?
Dolce and Gabbana , Catherine Malandrino, Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Dsquared2, Moschino and the list goes on and on.

Preppy or Punk?
Preppy.

Emo or Athletic?
Emo I suppose- I do love my skinny jeans and graphic print tees.

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?
Ever-evolving.

What is your favorite decade for style?
I doubt I could choose just one- since everything old becomes new again. I am a big fan of the 80s though.

What is your favorite fabric?
Cotton: it’s simple & comfy.

What is your favorite color?
I tend to gravitate towards bright colors: yellow, red, turquoise and white.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?

Eventually, yes.

Diamonds or pearls?
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

For every Customer Loyalty Training class here at Zappos, there is always a graduation, and it is always a sight to be seen! Each class, in their last week, chooses a theme and creates a cheer, in which they present in a parade around the office! It's Zappos tradition, and it's a blast always.

At Zappos, one of our Ten Core Values is Building a Positive Team and Family Spirit, and our wonderful CLT department is an excellent example of how it can be applied and make coming to work a joy!

The latest class had a football theme and had their diploma ceremony upstairs in the 2280 Building...below is a video of how it all went down.

Finance test gets down and dirty by cleaning books

Sep 12, 2008 by Cyndi T.

This month seems to be a "give back" kind of month for Zappos. The Finance team jumped right on that train and volunteered their services to help clean books for Spread the Word Nevada.

The goal of Spread the Word Nevada, is to promote literacy and to make it possible for all of Nevada's children to experience the magic of books. Its flagship program, Kids to Kids distributes books to elementary schools throughout Southern Nevada and has had a profound impact on the lives of thousands of children in Nevada schools.

The Finance team had a blast cleaning books and catching up on their elementary reading. The team made the day a true team bonding event and spent most of the two hours laughing and scrubbing.

Some of the books that were donated weren't always directed at children and we made sure to pull those and giggle about them later.

1950s Day at Zappos!

Sep 11, 2008 by Brett H.

Today is 1950 day at Zappos! We have a few different blogs and videos planned to celebrate this fine decade in American history. Melissa L., our blog reporter out in the Zappos trenches everyday, planned a nice outfit to celebrate the working woman that blossomed in the 50s. Her outfit was inspired by the 'We Can Do It' poster, created by J. Howard Miller.

According to Wikipedia, this poster is often mistakenly described as 'Rosie the Riveter'. These iconic images and themes were associated with World War II, when women began entering the workforce to help out with production because thousands of men were sent to fight in the war. Leave it to Melissa to always put a lot of thought into her outfit....and leave it to me to always be a party-pooper.

When I saw her, I mentioned that I believe that look was popularized more in the 1940's. A long argument ensued, (i now have a black eye and bruised kidney) and we agreed that although, the look might have originated in the 1940's, it, and the women's workforce movement, carried on long into the 50s.

Melissa then argued that though the "do-rag" look was made popular in the later 40s, it was still used in the 50s for the casual woman who is either setting her curls for the day or (heaven forbid) doesn't have curls in at all! She then argued that so many people look to the 50s with a very stereotypical eye and forget that women didn't run around in poodle skirts drinking chocolate malts all day long, but worked outside in the yard, cleaned house, went to school and studied for exams. To think that all women put on lipstick and curls for all of these occasions is impossible. True, in the 50s, it wasn't very lady like to step outside your house with your hair a mess, so when in doubt, throw it up in a rag. Also, the jeans are levis (a brand which did exist in the 50s) and they are rolled in a slight cuff (a look which was also made popular in that time) complete with white boat shoes (something Marilyn wouldn't be able to live without).

Any history buffs want to challenge us? Comment below!
And by the way, I am going to try my best to avoid Back to the Future references. McFly.

Yesterday, one of our Facilities heroes, Richard D., came to me and informed me that he had a Mardi-Gras parade-type head thing that was in his garage, and he needed to get rid of it. He warned me that it's very, very big, but, of course, I accepted this fine offer. (We are quite the scavengers in this department)

This thing is awesome beyond belief. It is huge, yellow and made of Fiberglass, with a baseball helmet mounted inside to allow you to wear it around. We believe that it needs to be a nice Zappos blue, but we're still trying to come up with a game plan for it's future incarnations. John F. in CS is on it, he is the creative genius behind many of our projects.

Below, Sean C. models this fine machine for us.

RrrrrDesk: Fun Dollar!

Sep 10, 2008 by Brett H.

The Fun Dollar is awarded to those Resource Desk Pirates that are willing to risk life, limb and general well-being in the pursuit of recognition for their "a little weirdness". To be awarded the Fun Dollar you must successfully accomplish the assigned pirate trials. From doing crazy dances, to eating gefilte fish and random mystery Easter eggs! If it is crazy enough, it may be worth a Fun Dollar!

A lot of reps outside of the RrrrDesk like to bring us new and exciting challenges. This was the case this past Thursday. A wonderful rep named Arcelia was at the Asian food store and found some very pungent dry fish and thought "This is a perfect Fun Dollar Challenge. The challenge was presented to us and the very fabulous Faby stepped up. Below are some pictures of Faby and very gross sea creatures she so bravely ate. We were so wow-ed by the feat that she was awarded the Fun 5 Dollar instead. Go Faby!

Zappos Gives Up Lunch to Give Back to Community......

Sep 9, 2008 by Melissa L.

....in order to give money back to those in need. Here's an interview with Jamie N. giving us the inside scoop on why we're bringing our brown bags to work this week.

September 8th – September 12th we will not be serving lunch at our offices or the outlets and the money will be given to the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation to help them in the cost associated with their upcoming Bone Marrow Drives. Their goal this year is to save the lives of 6 children here in Nevada. It could take hundreds or even thousands of people to get tested in order to save these children. Here are a few quick facts:
· 46 Children are diagnosed with cancer everyday
· 30,000 children and adults right now have a disease that could be cured with a bone marrow transplant.
· Only 30% of them will find a match
Zappos will be hosting 3 bone marrow drives for the NCCF in September. The support of “Zapponians No Lunch” money has allowed the foundation to double their bone marrow efforts this year. On September 12th the Bone Marrow Registry will be on site at the 2280 building for Zappos Employees interested in joining the registry. You will need to fill out a quick form and they will swab the inside of your mouth. That’s it! You can change your mind if you do get called, but we hope you won’t. On September 13th 2 more bone marrow drives will be hosted at our outlet stores.

My Mythology - Elisa C. Fashion Department Assistant Buyer

Today we study the mythology of Elisa C., Assistant Buyer for Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2459/Elisa.jpg

How would you define your look?

Simple with a splash I like to have 1 or 2 pieces that stand out and then dress it down a bit. I like to wear a cute skirt with sneakers or maybe jeans and a t-shirt with a dressier shoe.

What inspires your style?
Simplicity. I like things that look special or hard to find. Or stuff that looks really neat, but it didn't take a whole lot of time to put together (even though we know we girls need to spend a lot of time primping!)

Who is your favorite designer?

I know this may sound weird because I don't necessarily dress really crazy, but I always love to see what Betsey Johnson has to offer.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?

That's a hard one because I like to change things all the time; bags, jewelry etc... if I had to pick though I guess I would say jewelry. It can make or break the outfit and I always have a lot of fun picking something out.

Who are your fashion/style icons?

Audrey Hepburn - she is my all time favorite.

What are your favorite labels?

Betsey Johnson, L.AM.B, Hype, Kensie are just a couple...

What is your favorite decade for style?

I like the 20's - there's just something about the flapper look - I also think I like it because that's when women started to be a little rebellious.

What is your favorite fabric?

Well I am always down for a good knit t-shirt with something cute on the front - Kensie has a lot of cute knit wear.

What is your favorite color?

My most favorite of favorite colors is red and always will be, but right now I am still digging the Kelly green and jewel tone purple.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?

Usually a cute top from one of the brands mentioned above.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?

No. every once in a while I will go on a shopping spree. Then later have buyer's remorse and return the items I "don't need", but I really do end up keeping most of it though - I can't help myself.

Diamonds or pearls?

Can I say both? I love diamonds because they are pretty and sparkly, but I love pearls because they are classic.

Which bag?

For handbags I like Lucky - pretty much whatever catches my eye

Sunglasses?

Betsey Johnson

What are your fashion rules?

Keep it simple and comfortable, but have some fun with color or patterns - there will always be some color that looks fabulous on you.

What is the most you've spent on a handbag?

Maybe around $100 - I'm not too sure.

Would set foot in a thrift store?

Ehh - I like finding discounts like the next person, but I am not a bargain shopper - I will go if I have to, but I don't have the patience to go through all the racks to find that "one" special item

What is the most you've ever spent on fashion and for what item?

On a single item I would have to say maybe a Hype dress... I think it was around $120 - $160...

Snowboots? In style or out of style?

They are definitely in - how can you not love snowboots?!?! It makes me think of the times I trampled through the snow as a little kid - I had pretty white and pink boots. Like I said, I love color and Rubber Duck has some pretty fabulous boots coming in this fall!

Thank you for all of the cunningly clever questions! I didn't get to answer them all, but don't let that stop you from asking another question! Perhaps I'll answer it next time. http://blogs.zappos.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif

Field Trip!

Sep 8, 2008 by Melissa L.

Zapponians are real people with real appetites and they sometimes venture out of the office to feed on many a delicious dish.

Even though Zappos spoils their employees with a free salad and sandwich bar daily along with soup and snacks beyond belief, some days eating outside of the office is great too!

What ever would we do without the wonderful strip mall across the street from the Zappos.com Headquarters!?!

(Editor's note: Brett H. has been trying to win a rubber bouncy ball with tentacles in the claw machine in the grocery store for 1.5 years now. He's beginning to get discouraged.

Tim: New Guy in Finance!

Sep 6, 2008 by Brett H.

Like to leave your computer unlocked? Leave your Badge in the Break Room? Tim hasn't been here a month and has learned the hard way that leaving his computer unlocked while away is a BIG No-No! Tim sits in a somewhat crazy section of Finance so leaving his guard up is a must ecspecially being the "New Guy".

He has accidentally left his computer unlocked and was given a new and very strange background along with an email sent to the Department from "Tim" that read "One time at Zappos I left my computer unlocked." Just today he mistakenly left his Badge in the break room. Good thing someone was nice enough to return it back to his desk, well, not exactly on his desk, but close enough!

1) What is your fashion statement?
Dress everyday like you’re on a runway. People will scrutinize you everyday so might as well look fabulous and make a good impression.

2) Give me 1 Core Value that you think best represents your fashion statement?
Be Passionate & Determined. I get a lot of ribbing in Development that software engineers aren’t supposed to be fashionable and that I should dress like everyone else. I love getting dressed up, but it takes a lot of effort and there are some mornings when I truly hate getting ready. It’d be easier to throw on a t-shirt and some jeans, but that doesn’t represent who I am as a person.

3) What has been your favorite fashion Expo so far of 2008?
As far as the items presented, I loved the Fashion Expo. There were some great shoes for fall that I’m already coveting. However I had the most fun at the outdoor expo. I participated in the sleeping bag challenge (lie on the pavement in 117 degree weather inside a sleeping bag for 10 minutes and win a free $200 sleeping bag). A lot of people didn’t think I’d make it, but I had the advantage: I wore a dress that day; everyone else had jeans on.

Recently the Casual Lifestyle Content Team moved desks from a row near Monkey Row, where Tony, Alfred, and Fred sit, to a room nestled deep in Zappos 2280. In an effort to dress up the walls in our new space, I perused Ebay for posters or pictures and came across the holy grail: a 'vintage' New Kids on the Block framed poster. After a fierce bidding war, I won the item for $4.25. - a steal. With bated breath I waited for the poster to arrive. Once it did, I was bowled over by the sheer awesomeness of the poster. Check it out:

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-2950-2451/n578497641_1429695_5861.jpg

Their hair is so high and perfectly coiffed. NKOTB should have appeared in an Aqua Net Commercial. What a missed commercial opportunity. It's a bit bizarre that Donnie is the only one who's smiling. I always thought of him as the bad boy of the group. The framed poster rests on top of the thermostat. When I'm writing descriptions I sometimes stare at the poster for inspirado.

Unbeknownst to me the poster came with the biography, "New Kids on the Block" by Keith Elliot Greenberg. (to my left, above)

Wicked, huh? I appreciate that Jordan is wearing a t-shirt of himself and Danny has on a pair of biker shorts. The book chronicles New Kid's meteoric rise to fame from hardscrabble roots. On the last page there is a stamp that reads, "Discarded by blank Public Library". The name of the library is faint, but it starts with "La". It never occurred to met that libraries discard books - it's sad. We keep the book next to the poster for people to read when they pop in for a visit. I feel lucky that I am able to showcase a book that was once discarded. It gives me strength.

Yours in Hangin' Tough,
Danielle T.

Marketing Moving on Up! (or Over, if you wanna be like that)

Sep 5, 2008 by Libby H.

Brand Marketing has left the building… well not really, we just left our former spot.
{Insert “Moving” by Supergrass here} We’re driving and embracing our new department, our new home and our new intern. Exciting!

For those of you feeling a little lost and looking for the newly promoted, Senior Marketing Coordinator Holly O. can be easily located in new Brand Marketing Room. Curious George helped us ring in Holly’s promotion and our new room, as you can see below. We are located in the room, next to the room, next to the old Development spot. It’s like the womb of Zappos.

As we take our journey to the East side of the building, we felt strongly that we form a more perfect union and grow our departmental chi. With the help of free paint from Miss Patti and a disheveled Feng Shui chart found randomly on Google, we have re-organized our chi to look a little something like this.

2290 CLT's New Home

Sep 4, 2008 by Melissa L.

The name tags are up, the rubber chicken is hung, but the new CLT abode in the top floor of the 2290 building, "just doesn't feel like home yet", according to the CLT residences. "It's nice, it's big, but we miss the chaos and noise that we had in the 2800 building."

Bucker up 2900 dwelling Zapponians! I'm sure once a few more Zapponians with noise makers move in and the conference rooms are all decorated and start holding big and important meetings, you won't feel so isolated.

For what it's worth, I envy your new space with a sweet view of the desert (which has a strange resemblance to Mars) and colorful walls.

The rumors are true! The good fruit, the good trail mix, fresh popcorn, coffee – pretty much all of the good snacks dwell near the 2800 help desk. So if you're craving a juicy nectarine...you now know where to find 'em!

My Mythology - Eileen Lewis: Director of Fashion Strategy

Sep 3, 2008 by Jonathan H.

My Mythology – Creating our own living legacy at Zappos

One of the joys about working at Zappos is the freedom to be ourselves through our own personal style. Style shouts! Individuals identify themselves through their personal style. Taking the chaos out of the closet and using clothing as a celebration to create personal mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Eileen L., Director of Fashion Strategy for Zappos.com.

The Post Labor Day Weekend Blues

Sep 3, 2008 by Melissa L.

There's no denying it, there's a change of pace here at the Zappos Headquarters as everyone tries to cope with the after Labor Day blues. Labor Day weekend is so much more than a Sunday do-over, it's a benchmark holiday that means Summer has come to a close and Fall is on it's way. Students of all ages dread this weekend because it usually means that school is back in full swing. Fashion gurus (and those who abide by the fashion law) retire their white attire for the season and welcome the rusty colors of fall. And everyone else buckles down for the long road ahead until the next paid three day weekend (which is - Yikes - Thanksgiving).

So readers and fellow Zapponians, don't dread the end of Summer (if you live here in Las Vegas, the Summer heat is still going to be with us for while) and, I love Fall, it's my personal favorite, nothing beats waking up to crisp Fall air!

Now get up all of you who decided to spend the day in the "Quiet room" wishing that today was yesterday, because inevitably Tomorrow will come and it's a waste of a day, a week, or even a year, if you spend the majority of the time wishing it away.

You heard me....Get out of those nap pods and shake off the post Labor Day Weekend Blues!

Things to Do With Zappos Box..........

Sep 2, 2008 by Brett H.

There certainly are a number of things one can do with a Zappos Box, below are two examples of what we do with the boxes during a given work day:

1.) Ship Shoes and Clothing to the Best Customers in the World

2.) If you are a developer here at Zappos, apparently you actually use the boxes for shelter, and possibly transportation.

Hina, one of our developers here at Zappos, was caught on Friday actually inside a Zappos box. We're not sure if she was trying to ship herself to our Kentucky Distribution center or not, but she sure seems to have fit into that box very easily. I guess that's one way to save on airfare.

La-zag-nay Day!

Sep 2, 2008 by Melissa L.

Here it is, the infamous question that is whispered through the Zappos headquarters every Tuesday and Thursday: What's for lunch today?

It's La-zag-nay day! Which is very similar to Lasagna, but, well, different. (Actually, we just didn't have the heart to tell Brett he was mispronouncing it.)
