Hey My Go-Greeners! Today I must say I was very sad, and maybe a little furious when going into the lunchroom to rinse my mug out this morning.

Did you know that we as Zapponians are not taking being wasteful seriously? Sometimes I see employees take as many as Five styrofoam bowls in a sitting for their lunch break. There are so many ways that we as Zapponians can do our part to help Zappos as a company and the environment just by paying a little more attention to the waste we produce.

For example, if we brought in our own utensils such as bowls, forks, plates, mugs, etc., we would cut down dramatically on the wastes we produce as a company.

If one employee used 3 bowls a day (one for breakfast, maybe soup for lunch, and salad bowl for a snack) that would add up to 1095 bowls a year. If one employee used 2 styrofoam cups a day for coffee, that adds up to 730 cups a year.

Lets say 20 employees followed this trend of using 3 styrofoam bowls a day and 2 Styrofoam cups a day that would add up to 36,500 styrofoam utensils for the year. (and Zappos has over 300 employees)

So the Green Tip today is for employees, both a part and not a part of Zappos, to bring in their own reusable utensils, bowls and plates. Now if that's not going to happen, than at least try to use the same utensils and plates, etc. throughout your day, that way you're cutting back from 5 to 1 a day.

STAY GREEN, YO!!!

Great blog!!!

This morning, I ate cookies with no utensils and my orange juice container will be recycled in the provided receptacles. The banana nut muffin I enjoyed was eaten by way of only a napkin, which appears to have already been recylced at one point of its existence.

When I enjoy a cold bowl of cereal, I own a reusable, blue Zappos.com bowl and spoon that I purchased from the Zollar Store. When I am lucky enough to enjoy a nice hot cup of chai, I can choose from a variety of coffee mugs that I own, thanks in part to certain vendors and friends.

I do my best and my part where I can. I hope more people will follow suit.

Latrira, I love your blogs. Regarding this one, I heard an interesting show on the radio about a guy who for one year threw all of his trash into the basement, just to try and train himself to not throw away as much trash. Now, even though this blog isn't exactly about trash, I think WASTE is something that this blog is about. Anyhow, back to this guy, after ONE YEAR, he had 36 pounds of trash in his basement, which is what the average person throws away in ONE WEEK. He said that once it was trained in his brain that he was throwing this stuff somewhere in his home, the amount of trash he used was reduced by some 2000% or more for the year, practically off the charts. Next time we go to throw something away, we should contemplate whether we needed that thing in the first place.
