Recently we had a satellite poker competition in which several employees competed to win a seat in the 1st annual Zappos Poker challenge. The group was narrowed down to 10 competitors and the final table was held at the Inn Zone, a favorite hangout of several Zappos employees. Our CEO Tony Hsieh made a special appearance, and showcased his poker skills for us in the video below.
In the Photo Dept in KYFC we have a team meeting once a month. It was my turn to shine and make a team building exercise and do something extraordinarily awesome. For my first time at a team building exercise, it went well. The best part was shoving some pies into a few of our supervisor’s faces. That alone, made everyone very happy.
It all started with a game I created called “Chain Letter.” The objective: Good communication. How it starts- Two supervisors on each end of a line with team members in between. The first supervisor relays a message down the line of people that had to be acted out by the supervisor at the end of that line. Out of four teams, only one was victorious. That team was the Queens. The winning team took a pie and put in the faces of all the supervisors that were on the not so lucky remaining teams. This was where the fun began!
We gave our Supervisors their attire, including shower caps and garbage bags, sat them down in a chair and took turns smashing whip cream pies in their faces. Everyone had a blast, even the ones who received the onslaught of warm whip cream gooeyness.
This just goes to show that no matter the situation, either winning or losing, it’s all about making it a fun and everlasting experience here at Zappos.
It's that time again! The time when one of our Zapponians, well, in this case, two of them, accidentally clicked the old mouse when they shouldn't have and replied to all. They unknowingly sent an email to a group far larger than what was intended and at Zappos, we award them for their mistake! (All in good fun, of course) The mayor was there with a bullhorn and we were there with the camera and our Reply To All Hat :)
Our CLT Team North America (aka Team Canada and friends) decided to remind Zappos how proud they are to be serving our Canadian/US customers today.
At 12:30 on Tuesday, led by their fearless leader Derek C., the team departed for a parade around the office. Dressed as Canadian Mounties, and sporting some fresh captures, the group made their way through the 2280 building triumphantly. At each stop, the team proudly delivered a loud cadence to let everyone in the general vicinity know to pay attention!
Our very own Fred M., while in Kentucky, decided to do a video description at the same time as our CEO, Tony Hsieh. Fred was our first buyer here at Zappos, and his title is currently...No Title. His "No Title" position enables him to oversee a variety of departments at Zappos. Fred is a big fan of boots, and here he gives us the skinny on a nice little pair I'd like to own.
Yee haw.
Missy's desk is full clovers that she uses for good luck. Although, with her magic 8-ball that she uses to predict the future, I don't think she needs luck.
Stop by Missy's desk, and see if you can pick out a four-leaf clover.
The Zappos Finance Department teamed up with Spread the Word Las Vegas to help Clean books for At Risk Children in Southern Nevada. Spread the Word gathers gently used books from Children who have outgrown them, find groups to help clean them, and place them into hands of children who may have never had a book to call their own. We feel this not only helps our Community, but also helps the finance team to build a positive team and family spirit.
Spring and summer beauty is all about that natural, lit-from-within glow, focusing on your natural beauty, and not trying to mask it!
When the temperature heats up, it’s time to put away heavy makeup and perfumes, and trade in for lighter, summer-friendly alternatives like a tinted moisturizer with that ever-important SPF, and fresh and clean fragrances. For this Spring and Summer, the top must-have beautytrends are: clear, exfoliated skin, a natural bronzed glow, stand-out eyes and lip color and, of course, the perfect finishing touch: light summer fragrances.
Our favorite glowing skin secret this season is the amazing MD Skincare® Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel. This easy two-step at-home micro-exfoliation kit takes only a couple of minutes to use, and delivers a more luminous and even complexion, the perfect glowing canvas for your summer makeup!
After you’ve exfoliated your skin, protect it from the sun’s harmful rays while creating a polished, more even tone using a tinted moisturizer like Stila’s Sheer Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30. This handy little multi-tasker is just what you need to create a naturally gorgeous, pool-ready look!
Of course, it wouldn’t be summer without the perfect bronzed complexion! Stay the safe and natural route with a bronzer like purmineral’sUniversal Marble Mineral Powder & Bronzer. Lightly dust on your cheeks and temples for a totally natural glow, like you just came back from a fabulous Caribbean getaway!
Last, but certainly not least, create a memorable impression this spring and summer season with a light and refreshing fragrance like the Calvin Klein CK One Summer for both men and women. This energizing and vibrant scent embodies the very essence of summertime.
All of our employees at Zappos.com would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all women and men who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in all branches of the United States military.
And to all of our troops overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq fighting the good fight, we want you to know how much you are appreciated by your fellow countrymen at home. America certainly is the Home of the Brave as long as you all are citizens of this country. This day is for you. Thank you, thank you, thank you all for your service to your country.
Several OutdoorBrands attended our Outdoor Expo at our offices in Henderson, NV yesterday to help educate our team members on new and upcoming styles. Expos such as these allow our Customer Loyalty representatives, as well as other employees to understand how the items we carry on the website are sized, manufactured and designed. Our Customer Loyalty team strives to pursue growth and learning, as well as stay on top of the coolest styles. Big Thanks to the Scheduling team for organizing the flow throughout the day, and allowing everyone in our awesome CLT department to attend!
Recently Tony, Alfred and Aaron were invited to attend the season finale Filming of Celebrity Apprentice. They were milling around the auditorium when our very own Linda L. motioned for the three to come up on stage because she wanted to take a picture of them “Behind Donald Trump’s chair and the Boardroom table”.They didn’t want to come up on stage…thinking they weren’t allowed and the producer said “of course your allowed up here with Linda…” Still hesitant, Linda demanded "Get up there"! Thanks to Linda's determination and not to mention impeccable photography skills, we get to see the remnants of this fun photo op!
P.S. After our Bald and Blue event last wednesday, some of you may have forgetten what 2 of these guys look like with hair !!!!!!
Ever been thumbing through a phone book and notice that the page you're looking for is missing? Well, imagine if you found yourself flipping through a phone book that's been shredded in half! Lately, we've found several of the latter of those two phone book styles in our Las Vegas office. Jimmy A. from our Finance department, who moved from The Kentucky Fulfillment center to Las Vegas May know a little more about this subject.
For the 4th year in a row, Zapponians in the Vegas office participated in what has come to be known as Bald, Blue and Beautiful Day. Explain, you ask? That I shall!
Four years ago, while still in the office on Warm Springs, some old timers at Zappos were out having a few beers and the usual madness ensued, which led to a dare concerning a little head-shaving the next day. Let me explain how I assume this most likely came up. Just in case you were not aware, Las Vegas is hot. Sidewalk like a skillet hot. You know that talk you hear about a "dry heat"? Don't listen to that crazy talk. My oven creates a dry heat as well, if you get my drift, yo.
So, let's assume someone was complaining about how it was already 100 degrees in May and how nice a bald head would feel.....take it from there, Mr. Clippers.
Sort of like a 'very special episode' on an 80s sitcom when a special guest stops by, our CEO, Tony Hsieh, stopped by our Product Video Department while attending the Kentucky Vendor Fair at the KY Fulfillment Center.
This is what happens when you click on the cute fuzzy kitten link your aunt sent you.
Much like our "Reply to All" treatment, IT decided to make an "I Got a Virus Hat" complete with sign in order to let the entire office know, that yes, they got a virus.
Mercedes and JC from local radio station Mix 94.1 toured the Zappos Office today, and the best part had to be the LIMBO with the Merchandise Planning Team! Mercedes and JC were wonderful sports, Limo Experts! Thanks Mercedes and JC for spending some time with us!
Here at Zappos.com we have our Annual Health Awareness fair every May to Celebrate Health Awareness Month. This Year we had Experts from all avenues of Health Awareness to come and show us different ways to build and maintain a Healthy lifestyle.
Our blogger Melissa visited the event to show us some the latest styles and trends at the expo. Thanks to everyone in merchandising who helped set up the event, and all the vendors for the great information on their products.
Our Zappos.com Corporate Challenge contenders are very passionate and determined to bring in as many medals as they can, but also have fun and build team spirit at the same time. The Zappos.com HR team hosted a poster making extravaganza to allow everyone who didn't participate in Corporate Challenge to show their pride as well.
So far The Archery Team and 5k run Group have each acquired a Gold Medal, and the Bike Race Group scored a Bronze medal for their efforts! Our Sand Volleyball as well as our Walk Race Teams Scored 4 points each, and the Zappos Track and Field team scored 1 point. Thanks for making us Proud to be Zapponians, and keep up the good work!
A few years ago we were looking for a solution to keep shoe box lids from falling off of their Boxes, and we found that Rubberbands were inexpensive, reusable and quite effective. However, we did run into a problem when we moved to our new Fulfillment center. Our Director of Fulfillment Operations Anthony V. tells us "the rest of the story".
Last weekend our Couture team was invited to see No Doubt’s kick-off performance of their reunion tour, at the 12th annual Tiger Jam Charity Event, at The Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.
Since our Couture team is in charge of stocking our site with Gwen Stefani’s line, L.A.M.B., they were given free tickets from the President of Schifter and Partners along with the chance to meet Gwen herself! Even though Gwen says “I’m just a girl” she’s a pop fashion icon to most and of course if there’s one team here at Zappos who’s all about fashion, it’s our Couture team.
Yes, we do sell shoes on Zappos, but we are also in the clothing business! And the Zappettes don't just want to tell you about it, they want to sing to you about it!!!!
If you call in to Zappos and are placed on hold, you will be hearing the magical sounds of the Zappettes and their original composition, Think Zappos. Below is a video performance of the tune, check it!
Anyone who has ever been a bride or has accompanied a bride through her shopping and planning knows that a bride is a landslide of emotion and if anyone crosses her path at the wrong time, things could get a little dangerous.
Jewel works in our CLT department here at Zappos, and has lots of fun things on her desk. She really likes fun family movies, especially Kung Fu Panda - evident by all the toys from the movie on her desk.
If you're ever having a bad day, go see Jewel's desk, and she may let you relax with her meditating frog.
Some people call it Bags, but here in Kentucky it's simply called Cornhole. The Kentucky warehouse has a super sweet break area with an internet cafe, library and of course Cornhole!! Dev Support All-star Noureddine E. shows us what it's all about!
Former Las Vegas Video Description Guru, Jason Lee, recently moved to Kentucky to Spearhead our Video Description Program at our Fulfillment center. In the Past 2 weeks we have started some serious construction in our old Photo studios to allow 3 video descriptions to be shot at any given time. Jason Lee tells us more in this video!
The Kiva robots in our Kentucky Fulfillment center aspire to be Kentucky Derby winners, and also have very unique names. The 70 employees in Kentucky with the longest length of service were given the honor of selecting names for all 70 of the Kiva Robots that we house in our Shepherdsville Facility.
In this second edition of "First Jobs", Zappos employees talk about the jobs that helped guide them to the job they have now. Some first jobs are fun, others times they are things that you would never want to do again; but whatever the case, most people can look back on their first job with memories that they will never forget.
What was your first job? Comment below!
Our Human Resources team is known for hosting potlucks in the 2290 building, but today they really went over and above. In honor of Frog Jumping Day, they hosted a breakfast potluck complete with freshly made french toast, waffles, fresh fruit and breakfast pastries to feed the entire building.
We lost a very special baked good today, known mostly from Golf cart ride for 3 fame. Not many Rolls can say they were in a rap video, but thats not all Ralph was known for. He and Melissa shared a desk, as well as many good times. You will be missed my small round friend.
"Lacy is a Production Coordinator in the Photo Department at the KY Fulfillment Center in Shepherdsville, KY. Over the past 2 years, she has built a vast collection of various items that sets her desk apart from everyone around her (including a Spider Man Mr. Potato Head that I gave her). Take a minute out of your day and check it out.
This year for our running expo we had several Athletic Performance vendors visit and inform our team members about their new styles for Spring and Summer. Our friends from BrooksRunning had a shoe lacing competition where the winner scored free airline tickets! Check out the video for a peek inside what a Zappos Expo is all about.
Our Blogging Queen Melissa L. is taking safety to a new level, and she's starting from the ground up. We always knew she had a good head on her shoulders, and she intends to keep it that way. Fashionable functionality is her new motto.
We get lots of folks who come in for a tour of the Zappos office here in Las Vegas, and there are several Zappos team members are certified tour guides. Loren B., is a Tour Certifier and quite the fashionable tour guide. He has a new sporty look that we would like to show you.
If you've ever been around Vanessa for more than a few minutes, you definitely could tell she has a love for comedy. In fact, Vanessa loves comedy and being on stage so much, it's no wonder her entire wall around her desk is filled with pictures of her favorite comedians.
If you ever want to see some of Vanessa's stand-up improv, just sign up for one of her Pipeline classes. She teaches several, and I understand she teaches all of them in her fun comedic style. You can also see some of Vanessa's other work on the Zappos blogs.
Around Christmas 2008, we had this story come through our Customer Loyalty Department.
Jeanette called on December 22 to order some Ugg boots for her close friend, who had just lost all of her and her family's belongings in a house fire. She had explained to the Customer Loyalty Representative that she was very happy she found these boots in stock, as it was the one thing her friend's child really wanted for Christmas. She was really floored when the rep offered to upgrade the shipping free of charge so the boots would get there overnight. Her friend called her the next day and was very happy with the gift.
Jeanette then left to go to Florida. Once there, she received a call from her friend who was in complete shock because of an additional Zappos Box that showed up on her doorstep.
Derby is no longer just for us Bluegrass residents! Robots can have Derby too! Right?! Yes they can! Some KIVA folks flew in last week from Boston to show us that! They came to the Zappos.com Kentucky warehouse and recorded some robot action! With that they put together some awesome stop action work to create the scenes for the KIVA Kentucky Derby!
The Zappos.com Customer Loyalty Team is always looking for ways to better serve the customers. One of the most important things they do, is to make sure they are always available to answer any customer questions, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In order to do this, they need the right amount of people here at all times. Last year, the CLT scheduling team came up with the "Pandy" award as a way to recognize all members of the CLT team who had perfect attendance.
Each month, the CLT members with perfect attendance receive the Pandy award, along with additional benefits, depending on how many consecutive months they have received it.
They started the Pandy award in January 2008, and there are 30 CLT representatives that have a current streak of perfect attendance for one year or longer. Their longest current streak is held by Jean D., who is currently at 28 months of perfect attendance (started even before the award existed).
Here are the CLT members with a current streak of one year or longer:
Jean D., Anna C., Crystal M., Elissa S., Elsie F., Laura R., Peri G., Quintaye P., Rebekah F., Sharon R., Stacy H., Tami L., Jennifer M., John D., Susan J., Candace S., Eleni D., Eric P., Grace H., Lacey J., Monfredo M., Thomas S., Irene V., Kathy H., Krystle G., Lauren A., Rosario S., David J., Joyce E., Mark G.
Today, Kenny L is our Zapponian of the Day because he is graduating from College, it's his Birthday, well, on Saturday it is, and he ate pudding for breakfast. If this doesn't deserve a Zapponian of the Day, then I don't know what does.
The Pipeline team got festive on Cinco De Mayo and invited some members of Finance and HR to take a swing at a traditional Mexican Fiesta Piñata full of candy and Zollars! Little did Finance know, the Pipeline team would be handing out more than just Candy this year.
It's cinco de mayo and we have salsa on our minds. Not salsa as in salsa dancing but the tomato based Mexican dip that when pared with a tortilla chip becomes highly addictive. Lets find out who at Zappos.com can salsa.
Congratulations to our salsa winners! 1st: John P. - Our Software Engineer who also knows how to engineer a refreshing cilantro and lime pico de gallo style salsa.
2nd: Jeanne M. - Our Dir. of Casual Lifestyle & Outdoor Performance and she may have actually kicked her husband out of the kitchen in order to make this full flavored chunky tomato and onion salsa, but just in case, we'll congratulate him too!
3rd: Casey L.- Our Beauty Buyer and well, it's her job to like pretty things, so I'm not surprised that her salsa was full of color and a beautiful combination of sweet and tangy flavors.
Kacee works in the shipping and receiving area here at Zappos corporate office. If you walk back into her area, all you will normally see is stacks and stacks of Zappos boxes throughout the room.
If you take the time to venture through the maze of boxes, in a small corner of the room, is house that Kacee built. If you make that far, you'll see the heart of all shipping in and out of the Vegas.
Yesterday the Pipeline team invited everyone over to their area for a Hot Dog Social! Brett had a chance to talk to a few pipeline instructors and ask a few questions about classes, and of course enjoy a tasty Dog! Is there a dancing class coming up in the near future?
We've had a lot of good guesses as to what Jerry's key might be to in the last blog, "This Could Save Your Life" and to whomever guessed that it's a faucet key, you are correct! Water is essential and without it, we would all die. So with this key, and a functioning faucet, you will never go thirsty and if you live in the desert like we do, where a natural spring is just a facade, this key may come in handy.
In the Spirit of Health Awareness Month, Chris P. from the Performance team lead us on a walk across the street. We were initially promised party hats and Fat Free Pork Rinds, but we settled for coffee. For the entire month of May, there will be scheduled fitness walks led by different members of the Zappos.com team, Monday through Friday. Some days actually have 2 scheduled walks, so get out there and help raise Health Awareness!!
While Tony was in "The Big Apple" he met up with the founder of Meetup.com for a tour around their headquarters and to challenge whomever is daring enough in a razor scooter competition. Tony has obviously been practicing.
Oh...and did I mention that Tony is now a cartoon? Check it out.
If you're a regular Blog Reader you know about Bald Blue and Beautiful, and possibly about Free Golf cart rides for 3, but beautiful and Lustrous permanent Hair Color? That's right, The Lovely Ladies from Procter & Gamble stopped by with the new Frederic Fekkai hair color and hooked a couple of gals in our merchandising department up! Stayed tuned for Frederic Fekkai Hair color on Zappos.com!
As you all know our IT department at Zappos.com isn't exactly what you would expect. Sometimes you may see them carrying a broken computer to their workshop and ultimately parting it out like a 1982 Camaro. Today we noticed that Charles A. and Dave L. were dressed similar and asked them why. Their only explanation was that they had absolutely no explanation at all.
Although you may not have guessed it, Brett's looked at as kind of a Renaissance man around the blogs team. He enjoys music, reading, journalism, plays in a band and whatever you do, don't get him started on politics - no really, please, please, please don't get him started on politics.
So if you ever wanted to know what a pack rat looks like, take a look at the things on Brett's desk.
May is "Health Awareness Month" at Zappos.com. The entire month is filled with events and ideas to get and keep employees and their families healthy.
This year there will be be daily walks, a health fair and many other great activities to participate in. Make sure you stay tuned for all the upcoming events.
You get to decide which description is the ultimate champion. Will it be the Tyrant of Text? Maybe the Wizard of Words? You decide! Just comment below and state which product you think is the winner. Remember though, two descriptions enter the ring but only one will become the Verbiage Victor.
