Tattoo Time at Zappos!

Jun 30, 2009 by Jason C.

So, it's time once again to highlight some of our employee and their tattoos. With Zappos being such an open, employee friendly company, our employees have the freedom to show off their own unique personalities - and many of them show it off through their tattoos.

Some people just have one that they got on that one crazy night out with friends, and others, like Bill, have many years of tattoos across their body. But no matter how many they have, there are always stories behind them.

Nibble the Half-Byte

Jun 30, 2009 by Michele K

We, the C-Shift of Tech Support, have created life, and we shall call him… Nibble.

Nibble T. Half-Byte is our floppy haired new friend that was created out of madness, err… out of creating fun and a little weirdness. C-Shift (Blake and Kristy) each work alone except for one night a week. We get lonesome on some of the quiet nights as we work on our projects. It gets tough not having anyone immediately available to bounce ideas off of, and not having someone there when you’re thinking too hard about how to resolve an issue to tell you ‘Hey, silly, plug in the power cord!’. For these moments, Nibble is there for us. Don’t let his goofy exterior fool you; he’s a very intelligent and complex Tech Support Rep Jr..

Nibble The Half-Byte’s Bio

Hi! My name is Nibble, I work in Tech Support. I specialize in staring issues straight in the face and… well, waiting until staring fixes it. I am also a great tamer of the mischievous Kiva bots. I am a very hard worker and I love being part of the team. I resolve tickets in creative ways; usually I just throw myself into it (literally, as I have no arms to do much else). I love to have fun and frolic about the warehouse. I recently went on an outing with the team. We rode the conveyor coaster, played hide and seek, and worked on the world record for the biggest rubber band ball EVER! I also met a lot of new friends. Most people don’t quite understand me, and I love Zappos because everyone here accepts me for who I am. If you’re ever in KY and need some help with your computer stop by and I’ll help ya out!
Your friend,
Nibble

Zappos.com athlete Jeremy Chardy played some great tennis in the First Round of Wimbledon on June 23rd versus American Favorite Andy Roddick. Prior to his appearance at Wimbledon last week, Jeremy was ranked 41st on the ATP Tour with a 21-16 record this year and no Titles to his name. We were extremely happy to see Jeremy Give Andy Roddick a run for his money in this awesome matchup.

With this week bringing us several days of 100 plus degree temperatures, our Cruise Ship team decided it was time to break out the summer activities. Today they had a snow cone day for us. With several great flavors to choose from, it was a cool treat for everyone.

If you work at Zappos.com in Las Vegas or have taken a tour of our offices in the past week, you already know that this game is spreading like wildfire. I'm sure we've all played games like this, but I must say this is the most difficult of it's type I have ever experienced. We decided to go around the office and see if anyone had the skills to battle, but I think we may have to let everyone practice for a week to get their chops up to par. Stay tuned for the Barrel on a Stick Tournament!

Latrira S. gives us a little more insight into this cool and very delicious get-together.

Once the New Hires Graduate from their one month CLT training course they go straight to incubation where they are watched closely and receive helpful feedback to take with them once they are released into the wild. And we know it's stressful being new to the CLT Floor, so they schedule fun Core Value arts and craft time to help relieve some of the tension.

Shoe Tying 101

Jun 25, 2009 by Melissa L.

So just when you think you can tie your shoes correctly someone like Debbie Weitzman comes along and tells you that you're doing it all wrong (she should know, she is Stuart's niece). That's right, it all happened last week when we had the pleasure of having Debbie tour our Henderson Headquarters and upon introduction she glanced down at my shoes and screamed out "look at those laces! Come here, you're a mess!" And before I had time to take that remark personally, she was already in the process of retying and explaining the correct way to tie a shoe. And since the difference was so amazing, we decided to walk around the office a find other Zapponians in need of a shoe lace makeover.

Thank you Debbie for schooling me and all of Zappos in the art of shoe tying. Our bows will never be lopsided again!

Graveyard Shift Celebrates 5 Years!

Jun 25, 2009 by Jason C.

This week our Customer Loyalty Team's graveyard shift celebrated its 5th anniversary. That's right, June 21, 2004 is the day Zappos started WOWing customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. One of the reasons Zappos moved to Las Vegas from the Bay Area five years ago, was for the 24 hour workforce and culture that is alive and well in this town. So, shortly after moving to Las Vegas the graveyard shift was started.

The amazing thing is that even though the graveyard shift only started with just a handful of people, five years later, we still have a couple of the original members here working on the shift.

So just remember, when you're curled up in bed at night - "You sleep, they Wow!" And if you ever find yourself up on the computer in the middle of the night, and what to find some shoes, clothes or a handbag, just go to Zappos.com. While you're having fun shopping, if you need help or even just want to say hi, give our graveyard team a call, because they would love to help you out. We're here 24 hours a day, online and in person.

Today is the Kentucky All Hands Meeting for all Zappos Fulfillment Center employees! Matter of fact, it's happening right now! Brett is there and these photos are literally from a few minutes ago. We wanted to show the meeting as it is happening!

As you may have seen, on June 1st, the employees from the Vegas headquarters all met at the Henderson Pavilion for this 2nd annual event, and now it's Kentucky's turn.

Just like in Vegas, the 2009 yearbooks were handed out to everyone, and excitement is in the air!

First and Worst Jobs of Zappos Employees!

Jun 24, 2009 by Jason C.

Do you remember that first job working at the local fast food restaurant or grocery store. Some of those first jobs were so fun you wish you could still do them today and some the exact opposite – you wouldn't go back no matter how much you were paid. Some people had big aspirations of working for a pro sports franchise when they get older – our very own John D. lived that dream in his early years.

On this latest first jobs video, Zappos employees tell us about some of their first and worst jobs.

Stop Motion Zappos Charge

Jun 23, 2009 by Melissa L.

After our All Hands Meeting we thought it would be a grand idea to film a classic downhill charge scene much like the one in Braveheart - only Zappos style. So instead of William Wallace we have Tony, Alfred and Fred proudly holding the Zappos flags and leading our unarmed army of Zapponians down the hill towards, well, no one really. However, Max M. bravely stood at the bottom off the hill in front of the charge to capture still shots of this momentous event and pieced them together to make this stop motion video. You rock Max!

Many Zapponians have one if not several tattoos, and since we're a company that allows our employees to show their sleeves proudly, we're going around the office inviting our coworkers to share their body art with us. And as everyone knows, where there's a tattoo, there's a story behind it and today Stephanie, Heather and Lyle are highlighting their favorite tattoos (or the tattoos that they can show) and giving us the stories that go along with 'em.

Liz G., today's Zapponian of the Day, is a woman of many talents, one of which is being able to scratch behind her ear with her foot, kinda like a cat AMAZING! But one talent that she is most known for around the office is her better-than-Broadway voice that she uses to serenade coworkers with her group,The Zappettes.

And that my friends is why Liz is our Zapponian of the Day.

Each ticket admitted 2 people and it was first come, first serve, so needless to say, they went fast! 2009 Corporate Challenge Closing Ceremonies

Jun 18, 2009 by Jason C.

So this weekend marked the closing of the 2009 Corporate Challenge here in Las Vegas. Over the past two-plus months, we've had numerous team and many of our employees competing in events throughout Las Vegas.

We had an amazing amount of employee participation this year: From the team participants, the employees who were volunteers for certain events, and everyone who went out and supported all the teams. Because of this, even with moving up to a higher division last year, we ended this year the highest place we've had in the five years in this competition.

A big thank you goes out to Dory and Anne for coordinating all the events and making everything run so smooth. Also, thank you Ros for coordinating the blood drives that were part of this - look for more blood drives throughout the year. Overall, thank you to everyone who help make this a successful event for us at Zappos.

Tony's Whistling Lesson

A few weeks ago, our friend Jay Spaleta at Footwear News sent Tony the gift of music (well, at least he tried) as well as another opportunity to Pursue Growth and Learning. Local Jazz Musician Michael Ray Tyler arrived at our offices with the mission to teach Tony how to whistle, and had no idea what he was getting himself into. Not only does Tony not know how to whistle, but Snapping his fingers is also quite a challenge. Senior Blogger Brett H. joined Tony in this lesson, as he has absolutely zero whistling skills either. Thank you both Jay Spaleta and Michael Ray Tyler, we hope you enjoy the video!

New Members Appear in Area 52!

Jun 17, 2009 by Jason C.

Like the mysterious things that are said to take place in Area 51, there were some really amazing things happening at our own Area 52 here at Zappos last week. Each day emails were sent out about promotions into this area. So we decided to investigate what was happening by speaking to Jane J., our Senior Manager in charge of our Customer Loyalty Team.

Our CLT team is our call center, which is our main interaction of Zappos and our customers. Area 52 is the management staff for CLT. While Zappos is know for customer service, and the amazing job our CLT does is one of the main reasons why, they feel like they want to continuously improve the level of service they give. With Zappos call center growing so rapidly over the past few years, they felt they wanted to make some changes that would strengthen the department, and the service they give even more.

Zappos believes that if you take care of your employees, they will in turn take care of the customers - happy employees = happy customers. The CLT department's goal for this year is to "Develop people and cultivate culture." By promoting several supervisors into management positions, this will allow each manager to have less reps under them, and therefore, build even stronger manager and team relationships.

Congratulations to all those going into Area 52's management staff, and thank you to everyone in CLT for continuing to deliver WOW through service.

Zappos Zollar program is a fun way that Zappos managers use to recognize employees around the office for doing a good job. Zollars are made up money that Zappos uses to allow employees to purchase things from the Zollar store.

It may not seem like much, but it's just another great program we have here to show employees how valuable they are. Our Cruise Ship Captain, Jamie, who is in charge of the merchandise for the program, talks about how it was started and some of the new item being put in store.

Development's Hack-a-Thon

Jun 8, 2009 by Brett H.

Development, or Dev, for short, is the department at Zappos.com that truly makes some magic happen on a basis that is quite daily, we gotta say. They build the Front and Back End of the website...and that is the simple explanation. If you want the 'more simplistic than necessary' explanation that I came up with, here you go:

"They type things into a black box on a computer screen, and then Zappos can sell you clothing through the computer screen."

I know, I know, that doesn't help. No one ever accused me of being smart in the ways of a Dev-er.

But I digress...This past week, the Dev Department were allowed 2 days to create and build whatever their hearts desired and all of the current projects that they are busy with were put on hold. Just to see what kind of Technological awesomeness that they could come up with to make our customer's shopping experiences better.

The Blogs Team crossed over into Dev to see what we could film without being reprimanded by Dev's Forces.

What you are about to see is Top Secret.

Sisters Get Zapponized!

Jun 6, 2009 by Michele K

Cinderella’s motto was: ”One shoe can change your life.” The Sisters’ motto is: “One shoe store has changed our lives!” Discovering Zappos.com years ago has been the “land of dreams come true” for two Southern sisters with feet as difficult to fit as Cinderella’s! (Think size 5.5 and 6N…) The added bonus of seeing hundreds of shoes from every conceivable angle without leaving the comfort of our homes can only be topped by Zappos saving the best surprises for last: free shipping both ways and delivery the next business day. Can you say INSTANT gratification?

The real reason for this note is to thank the “team members” in charge of shipping and receiving who spend their days inside the Shepherdsville, Kentucky, Zappos facility. My sister’s birthday present to herself and a sister surprise for me was a visit to Zappos in May 2009. This was a true fantasy adventure loaded with perks.

Prior to our flight to Louisville, while selecting magazines at the airport, Sissy found one with an article about Zappos and their CEO, Tony Hsieh. At that point, I had no idea of the significance of ‘the find’ except that we both love Zappos! Just before boarding, Sissy gave me the itinerary of our adventure for the day and many screams later, we arrived in Louisville. A quick twenty minute drive had us at the front door of the shipping/receiving/outlet of Zappos. Ever wonder how your shoes magically arrive the next day? Hmmm… Louisville is the hub for UPS.

On arrival, the plasma screen in the lobby was flashing a “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” greeting to my sister Alicia. That was cool enough, but was only the beginning of a wild afternoon with the Zappos team members. Sissy asked everyone who materialized in the lobby to sign her magazine while we awaited Stefanie, the representative who created this magical event. Her energy came through the door before she did and we seemed to hit warp speed as she ushered us through the security “phone booth” and into the Internet Café where team members were yelling “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”; waving pom-poms and directing our attention to a birthday cake, crown & huge Zappos bags filled with goodies for us. After much singing, signing (the magazine) and cake eating, we were introduced to the elusive, Craig A.. He even offered to take Sissy’s magazine to Las Vegas and ask Tony Hsieh to autograph it for her!

Then, it was tour time with Byron and Julie. As a member of the photo department, Julie creates many of the incredible photo shots of clothing, shoes and other items found on the website. Nine shots of each shoe in every color, any way you do the math, that’s a lot of shots! She had been asked to create a photo journal of our visit and as an aside, to answer all my questions. Believe it or not, as we passed through the photo department we interrupted a staff meeting (where someone was wearing a pirate hat and parrot) and folks stopped the chatter to yell, “Happy Birthday”.

Byron was the enthusiastic tour leader who was educating and entertaining us about how each area of the facility functions. At several locations, Sissy was encouraged by Byron to test her skills in the multiple roles of Zappos’ team members. Her favorite job was that of “picker”. She loved the idea of being paid to walk up to 14 miles per day. If you thought that the products that you order get to you by an automated method; think again. Real people pull, pack and ship those babies! Being a nerd, I was fascinated by the “Kivas”, the robots of Zappos. There are 70 of these little orange critters scurrying from station to station in a room the size of a university football stadium and each one has its own name, courtesy of members with senior status.

Following our personalized tour, we had time to visit the outlet store where Sissy was especially taken with a pair of Marc Jacobs denim heels with zippers and bling. I couldn’t get over a pair of “clear” mules (think ‘glass slippers’) with 5 inch heels. Meanwhile, dear Julie was snapping away and laughing as we tried on the most outrageous, the most expensive, the most beautiful and even a few conservative pairs. If I had more grace while hobbling across the floor, I would have come home with RED stilettos!

Customer service really does give Zappos the edge; every member we met had energy, enthusiasm and devotion, not only for Zappos, but for their colleagues. We would love to meet Tony! Then we could thank him for encouraging his team members to exceed the customer’s expectations in any and every way possible. The folks in Shepherdsville earned our respect and gratitude. Stefanie, thank you, thank you, thank you for creating an experience that certainly qualifies as “the adventure of our year” and a birthday extravaganza that no one can top! Overall, it was a fantasy come true where our every thought was anticipated and fulfilled. Customer service exceeded excellence.

And yes, we called and e-mailed everyone we knew about our visit as soon as we got home that evening.

Totally devoted to Zappos…Valerie & Alicia (the birthday girl)
P.S. You must have a reservation to tour the facility.

Split Shift has the Spirit

Jun 5, 2009 by Michele K

In order to keep Zappos a great place to work, employees continue to find ways to live our core values. One of our 10 core values is #7: "Build a positive team and family spirit." The Kentucky Fulfillment Center came up with a culture baton to represent this.

The objective of passing this CV #7 culture baton was to get to know some of our co-workers a little better. Split Shift was given the opportunity to invite another group in the KYFC to enjoy some good ol' hospitality! When you think of a family gathering, what comes to mind - FOOD! That's always my favorite part about 'em!

So, in the passing of our baton, and building a Team and Family Spirit, the group decided to bring in desserts to enjoy with the PM Part-timers. Cakes, cookies and more. Boy, they were super delicious, too!

We ended the gathering by inviting them into our family portrait, which is now posted on our "Important Stuff" board for all to see!

CLT's newly established team of Senior Representatives met on Saturday, May 30th for a few cocktails and some good times at BJ's Brewery. Most of the group have worked together in the past, but some catching up was definitely in order. Following dinner, the team was joined by more friends, family, and even some of the management at the Rush Hour Tavern for further partying. Getting together with comrades outside of work is just another way we build a positive team and Family Spirit at Zappos.com

Zappos Helps Mashable with the Summer of Social Good

At Zappos, we are excited to be part of Mashable’s Summer of Social Good event to raise funds for The Humane Society, LIVESTRONG, Oxfam America and WWF. The campaign runs from June 1st through August 28th and culminates with the first ever Social Good Conference on August 28th at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. We have proudly sponsored this event so that 100% of funds raised can be donated directly to the charities.

This charity drive is different from others as the entire campaign will be held online and shared through social media tools (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, 12Seconds and Globalgiving). To find out more about the program or to help the cause, please go to Adam Hirsch’s blog, COO of Mashable, or http://summerofsocialgood.com/ and help spread the word!

We not only think that Rackspace is an awesome brand, but we also like that Rackspace is about fanatical Customer support. They recently made us a video wishing Zappos a happy 10th Birthday, and we wanted to pay them a little tribute.

I'll let him tell the story.

Zappos is known for service…and for letting their service agents “be themselves”. I put this to the test tonight and threw a curveball or two at the guy helping me in a Live Chat. I used the name “Timmy” as my alias and asked a totally random question about a random product. See actual chat log below. Zappos rocks! I could not even make this stuff up, I swear.

You are now chatting with Jonathan
Jonathan: Hello Timmy. How can I help you?
Timmy: do you know how wide the G-Shock Atomic Solar - AWG101 SKU #7403774 is?
Timmy: i mean, how big a wrist it would fit?
Timmy: Timmy has a big fat wrist
Timmy: Timmy need watch grande
Jonathan: I’ll see what I can find out for Timmy.
Timmy: awesome. and can we please continue to talk about Timmy in the 3rd person? Timmy likes to boost Timmy’s ego by talking about Timmy that way
Jonathan: Jonathan would be happy to neglect the use of pronouns for the duration of this conversation.
Timmy: Jonathan and Timmy shall get along just fine
Jonathan: Will Timmy be able to measure Timmy’s wrist?
Timmy: Timmy’s wrist is big, but not Biggie-Smalls big. Timmy doesn’t have the required measurement instruments.
Timmy: Timmy is 6′4″ 220lbs if that helps Jonathan
Jonathan: Luckily, that is roughly the size of Jonathan’s brother, so that does help.
Jonathan: Jonathan thinks that this watch will work out well for Timmy. The watch’s circumference is 9 inches, so it will probably fit around Timmy’s wrist.
Timmy: Ok cool
Timmy: Do your watches and stuff have free return shipping like your Zapatos?
Timmy: in case Timmy wants another one or something
Jonathan: And if it doesn’t work out, as long as the watch is in its original condition and in the original packaging, Timmy has 365 days to return Timmy’s order. We will even pay for the return shipping! As always, our shipping to Timmy will be free.
Timmy: Timmy thanks Jonathan for good help
Jonathan: Jonathan welcomes Timmy.
Jonathan: It’s Jonathan’s pleasure!
Jonathan: Can Jonathan do anything more for Timmy?
Timmy: no that is all timmy needs
Timmy: timmy happy
Jonathan: Good. Does Timmy have an account se up with Zappos yet?
Jonathan: Jonathan will upgrade Timmy’s account.
Timmy: yes timmy is repeat shopper
Timmy: but “Timmy” is my alter ego and not my actual name
Jonathan: Well, what is “Timmy’s” email address? I’ll hook you up.
Timmy: Timmy has placed orders using txxxxxx@gmail.com in the past
Jonathan: Alright TODD!
Jonathan: :)
Jonathan: I’m going to upgrade your account to VIP status! This will ensure that all future orders go out with 1-business day shipping free of charge!
Just place your future orders at http://vip.zappos.com.
Timmy: Timmy Likey!
Jonathan: Good. Good…
Jonathan: Let Jonathan know if there is anything else that Jonathan can do for Timmy.
Timmy: Ok, Timmy ok now. Timmy time to go shopping!
Jonathan: Have fun!

Reebok Stops by Zappos!

Reebok has developed a new technology in their footwear called Easy Tone. It’s basically footwear that you wear all day that is designed to tone your body… like taking the gym with you wherever you go. Reebok is going across the country to show and promote this new product on a multi-city tour, and they were nice enough to make a detour so they could stop at our offices for a private pit stop!

And they brought Hot Dogs!

Ki's Video Description Blooper Reel

Ki works on the KY Content team as a Production Coordinator and in his free time helps out with the video descriptions. Ki is an interesting fella, in fact, he is part human, part amoeba. It's true!!! No, I'm not talking about a parasitic protozoan with pseudopods; it was just a metaphor to say he is able to change forms at will. I just wanted to use a metaphor to make me sound intelligent. Anyways, just take a look at this blooper video that Tracy P. put together! Enjoy.

Furry Friends at Zappos!

A lot of us have our sweet little pets waiting for us to get home from a long day of work, and there is nothing more wonderful than their excitement to see you!

At Zappos, we take our pet-ownership very seriously! And we would like you to be able to show your love for your pets, along with your love for Zappos at the same time. Just because your pet lacks a thumb and a bank account, that doesn't mean that they can't also be a fan of Zappos, right?

If you take a photo of your pet with some kind of Zappos box, shirt, hat or any kind of Zappos.com gear or schwag, email it to pets@zappos.com and we'll put it up here:

Be creative with that kitty or puppy or elephant or aardvark, whatever wild beast that you have, send it over!

Meow! Arf!

Zappos License Plates!

Jun 1, 2009 by Brett H.

On Thursday of last week, our Human Resources department had a special treat for our Zappos family, and no, it was not a pony. (I like Pony)

To celebrate the 10th Birthday of Zappos.com, HR ordered personalized license plates that even had the little sticker in the top corner like a normal license plate, but in this instance, the sticker represents how many years the person has been at Zappos.

We also received a lanyard pin that proudly displays the number of years that we've been roaming these halls and being proud to work at Zappos!

Thanks HR!

All Hands on Deck! All Hands on Deck!

Today, Monday June 1st, is fine day for all Zapponians in the Henderson, NV office....it is the 2nd Annual All Hands meeting! This is a meeting in which all 700 Las Vegas Zappos employees get together and hear from our CEO, Tony Hsieh, and COO, Alfred Lin, about where we going, where we been...Did I do another Forrest Gump reference? Brett, you must stop that!!!!

We will actually shut the CLT phones down (which only happens twice a year) for 2 hours while we all make the pilgrimage on foot to the Henderson Pavilion for the two hour 'All Hands on Deck' meeting. The blog team is acting as camera crew today, catching the presentations and a few other secret bits that I have been sworn to secrecy about: )

We love getting together as a group, so whatever happens on that huge stage today, we know that our Zappos family will go crazy and have the time of their lives!

YeeHaw, I say, YeeHaw!!!
