Freaky Friday!

Jun 3, 2008 by Christina Y

Have you ever had one of those Fridays where, your only excuse was "Hey, its Friday man!" That's how it was for us last Friday. Everything was funny, even though it really wasn't. We were all really talkative. Laurie is here from Vegas, and she helped entertain us with her awesome dance moves. Jon drew faces for our Zappos card board cut outs. That was our main team building project.. to get faces for the card board cut outs. Yeah, since it was Friday and all it didn't happen exactly as planned! One of the faces was done by Max. If you know him, you'll know which face was his! I began filming, with no point, and thats pretty much what you'll see! So watch our weird Friday video I put together! Enjoy friends!

Fresh and Easy.. Incubation Update!

May 27, 2008 by Jim G.

Last week, we had account from Derek F., our inside man in Zappos CLT Incubation, check out his first installment here. We hear from Derek again this week, deep in the trenches and nearing the end of one of the most exciting times for any new CLT member. Take it away, good sir!

Well, the time has come! We are in our final days of Incubation, and then on to the floor of CLT land! I think I speak for most people when I say that Incubation has prepared us for the floor in a way that is much better than just throwing us right on the phones and letting us sink or swim.

With that said, I am happy to say that all of us in Incubation passed the final exam with flying colors, and all of our final QA's were very good. We have all gotten our team assignments and we have met with our new leads, and after our graduation pot luck tomorrow, we move to our new desks. I think that we will compliment our new teams nicely. All in all, it looks as though we have all progressed to where we can all one day be superstars within CLT, and I know that makes our Incubation Leads proud to be a part of that.

My lead, Abbie, helped me get from a point of frustration to a great place where I can grow and learn and be the best there is on the floor. She was able to help me set goals that were improved on with each quality assessment and she even busted out the Post-its with all kinds of tips on them to help me remember everything that I had forgotten to mention to customers. Those little things helped me get past my learning curve.

Incubation for us comes to end tomorrow and we are going to enjoy our graduation with a little trip to the Mini Grand Prix tonight and a graduation pot luck tomorrow. Goodbye Incubation, you are gone, but not forgotten. We have finally grown up...

_Congratulations to all of our new CLT members! Rock on! _

Jellyfish, Piranha and Sharks! Oh My

May 22, 2008 by Christina Y

Last Saturday a group of us from the images content team decided to go on a team outing. Newport, KY was the place to be! Newport, which is on the levee, has the one and only Newport Aquarium! It's about an hour and 40 minute drive from Louisville, but it's worth the drive, especially if its as beautiful as it was on Saturday!

It was really windy, but it was on the sunny/warm side. Newport Aquarium is right on the Ohio river across from Cincinnati, so you get a beautiful view as well. Once you're inside they have 70 exhibits and 14 galleries featuring an amazing variety of aquatic life from around the world. They have five tunnels you can walk through, surrounded by marine life. And of course....the shark tunnel! All the sharks, beautiful colored fish and sea turtles wind their way all around you when you walk through. The floors are even transparent so you can see them swim under your feet. It was amazing, really!

The Jellyfish exhibit was also very beautiful! We walked into a low lit room with soft music, huge chandelier and big, round, red, velvet seating. The jellyfish were stunning; drifting back and forth, up and down, just like they were at sea. With the lights so low, they were super bright! We saw alligators, lots of turtles, frogs, tons of fish, eels and so much more!

On the way out they have an area where you can pet sand sharks! Erin, Jessie and Kyle were getting their clothes wet because the sharks looked closer than they appeared, so they were leaning in really far not realizing their sleeves were already wet!

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1920/aquarium.jpg

After the aquarium, we went to the Hofrauhaus and had some tasty tasty drinks! They were really crowded with parties and Cincinnati was having a baseball game, so it was going to be a long wait before we could eat. We were really hungry, so after we tried some great beer, we walked down the Levee to find some food and found the awesome Claddagh Irish Pub! We ate lots:Cabbage rolls, meatloaf melts, Irish Monte Cristo, and much, much more. It was great tasting food! I will absolutely go there again!

If you ever visit KY, I highly recommend you to go to Newport on the Levee. You will not be let down! I promise!

Fresh and Easy..CLT Incubation

May 16, 2008 by Jim G.

Here at Zappos.com, our new CLT reps have many hurdles to go through to becoming full time employees, and today we are going to discussing Incubation.

After leaving our fantastic CLT training course, they head to what we call "Incubation." I visualize it as a "training outside of training." It's purpose is to fine tune the skills that you have learned in training and also get you acclimated with the general "ways of the call center floor." They move to the call center building, focus more their acquired skills and work together as
a team. With that being said, here is an account of one of our new employees, Derek Flores, who is currently in Incubation. Take it away, Derek!

"Today is the seventh day in incubation, and let me tell you, we are getting the whole Zappos experience. Our leads are awesome and have done a lot in helping us understand and overcome the various challenges that we will face once we get out onto the floor. First, we
have Jim who is the lead of the morning shift, 6:00-3:00. Then we have Derek (D-Rock) and Abbie who have the later shift, 11-8. Overall, we are very impressed with their knowledge base regarding the questions we have for them. It's kind of hard to stump them, but I am waiting for that one question that will get Jim to say, "Wow, never heard that one before!" I feel that these guys, and girl, are a great fit for our group of unique individuals.

Each day has been very interesting and fun as we are introduced into the Zappos Culture. We are all embracing the core values and are doing so through Core Value Presentations. Each person is paired up with another person within Incubation and assigned a core value to present to the entire class. So far we have had some great presentations, but these couple have stood out in my mind.

Noelle and Liz's group were assigned, Creating Fun with a Little Weirdness and they brought in pipe cleaners and clay for us to make weird little objects. Some people made unique things out of the pipe cleaners and others made really weird objects out of the clay, but it showed each and every one of us that we all can create fun and a little weirdness.

One more presentation I have to write about is Randy and Greg's group. There core value presentation was on Building an Open and Honest Relationships with Communication. They brought in bread, peanut butter and jelly and wanted us to explain to Greg how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, as if he had never made one before. I will let you know that one of us did not tell Greg to use a knife and he stuffed his whole hand into the peanut butter....it was quite a sight. The presentations are good because each group has related the core value to something that we encounter everyday here at Zappos and how we can use them to either help better us or overcome challenges that accompany the job.

Well, so far, so good, with seven days under our belt. Tune in later for more from the wonderful world of Incubation."

Thanks Derek, hang in there!!

Q&A with The Finance Sisters!

May 16, 2008 by Ryan S

Core Value #7: Build a Positive Team and Family Spirit
And thats one thing these sisters do best. Not only does Katie and Sarah work for the same awesome company they work in the same crazy department! When they arent jumping around or hanging out with random statues, you can find them working hard in our Finance Dept. I was lucky enough to catch up with them and ask them a few random questions!

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1886/Jump%21%21.jpg

What was your favorite childhood show/book?

Sarah: Popples or the Care Bears! We owned everything they made!

Katie: My Little Pony forever and ever!

What do you like about working at Zappos?

Sarah: I like how friendly everyone is. It makes the day go by fast and makes me in a good mood. Also the food! I was addicted to the Peanut Butter granola bits for the longest time. Now that they are gone I have moved onto peanut butter cups. How healthy is that for health month!

Katie: Zappos takes care of its employees and treats us with respect…it’s really amazing. I used to work at a hotel and my egotistical boss used to send me to fetch him coffee(not in my job description)…very demeaning and he seemed proud of the fact that he could make you feel that way. So glad that I found Zappos!

If we were to press play on your ipod/cd player what would we hear?

Sarah: Tegan and Sara. My ipod is new so I haven’t had time to get more on!

Katie: Possibly bagpipe music

What was your craziest call taken during CLT Training?

Sarah: I haven’t been through CLT yet, but im sure ill get some crazies!

Katie: This lady kept me on the phone for about 45 minutes talking about how her husband used to beat her. It was really sad, but I think she just needed someone to talk to.

_What do you think you would be doing if you didn’t work__at Zappos?_

Sarah: I would probably be sitting at home wishing I was working here!

Katie: Poisoning my old boss’s coffee.

1 word on you mind at this very moment!?

Sarah: Sweaty!!! ( just got done with random acts)

Katie: Twitter

Dress for Success

May 15, 2008 by Dustin C.

In keeping with the core values, our supervisor on B shift Receiving decided to embrace "Create Fun and a Little Weirdness" by making a bet. We were facing around 50,000 pieces on back log and were looking at overtime on Saturday. CJ, our supervisor, made a bet with us to help boost production. The terms were simple; if we hit over 18,000 pieces for the day he would show up the next day in a dress. Of course we all jumped on the opportunity to see our boss walk around in a dress all day, so we rushed to hit that goal. By the end of the shift we not only hit our goal, but we surpassed it with flying colors. Our supervisor, being a man of his word, showed up wearing not only a dress the next day, but also brought a purse too.

Smurf Invasion!!!

May 13, 2008 by Maggie M.

Today is the day of the Smurf here at Zappos! The halls of our offices were invaded by dozens of Smurfs just after lunch. Word has it that the Kids team was responsible for the random act of Smurf but no one will confirm for sure. ?:|

Today in C-Life, we interviewed a woman named Melissa. When asked the most facinating thing about her, she explained that she could sing a song with all fifty states. She then agreed to let us film it and post it. Thanks, Melissa for being such a great sport!

The Zappos Merchandising team is working with ZU to put together a Zappos.com Edition of Monopoly. 5000 custom Monopoly boards will be created by Parker Bros. featuring Zappos.com and our Core Values, and will feature properties "sponsored" by many of our top vendors! The proceeds from the property sponsorship and sales of board game set will benifit The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Special thanks to Andy H., Richard Z. and Mark G. for putting this together! We're almost there! More info to follow!

Apr 28, 2008 by Angela T

Hello world!

This is my first Zappos blog entry, and I am excited to be introducing myself and the photo department to the rest of you, inside, and outside the company. My mission here is to give your hungry eyes a feast of photo department fun. We are a very active group of creative people not only looking to please our vendors and customers, but have a lot of fun in the process.

The core values are held in high regards in our studios. I have been with the company for about 3 years myself, and I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else. As I post more blogs, and you read further, I think you will understand why we all love it so much! ( As if all the other bloggers haven't given you enough reason already!)

Be looking for our department "quotes out of context" (coming soon) for a good laugh!

Fun with C-Life!

Andrea C. brought these spiffy sunglasses to the last Zappos Happy Hour and managed to get shots of many interesting people wearing them. This series is of members of Merchandising's Casual Lifestyle time (C-Life). At the happy hour there were many things to celebrate, one of which being Shyloh's promotion to Buyer. Another one: Galen, Mr. Capital G himself, was promoted to Senior Director of both Casual Lifestyle and Performance! Way to go, boss!

More sunglasses photos will follow! I understand there's one or two of our VP of Merch as well as our Senior Corporate Counsel. Great job, Andrea!

We Came, We Picnicked, We Encountered!

Apr 18, 2008 by Drew K.

Salutations, rapturous readers! I hope this merry missive from yours truly finds you reasonably chirpy! There was no wayI could let the week come to an end without one last update, as there was a boat-load of stuff that happened in Zappos.com's HR and Training teams since last we spoke!

So much culture, so little time…

Much of that boat-load had something to do with Jamie N., Zappos' resident Cruise Ship Coordinator! Also called “JamStar!” by those who know her best, she creates and coordinates myriad and momentous employee-related events, activities, and programs…kind of like Julie from the Love Boat, but without that 80's perm and with a bit more of an edge.

Our 4th Annual Zappos Employee Picnic was the largest to date, and ridiculously successful…

The calm before the crazy.

Kris Z. and Angela M. realizing they’re clearly outclassed. (Not that there’s anything classy about Bryan T.’s utter abandonment of all civility…)

L to R: Steve P., Mark G., Steve H., Fred M., Meghan B., and Eileen L. Winners of the Team Challenge!

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-1564-1631/winningteampicnic.jpg

...and JamStar just couldn’t resist making some mischief along the way:

“Ever since HR’s very own Dave H. won the typing contest, there have been vicious rumors aboutHR rigging results. Some of us decided to fight back. We held a raffle at the picnic, drew the winners yesterday, and sent the following email:

Congratulations to the following folks lucky enough to win a prize in the Picnic Raffle:

  • 1 Play Station 3 (Valued at $400) = Dave W. from HR
  • 1 Stainless Barbeque Grill Station (Valued at $200) = Drew K. from HR
  • 2 Flip Video Camera (Valued at $155 each) = Rebecca R. and Hollie D. from HR
  • 1 Espresso Coffee Maker (Valued at $100) = Christa F. from HR
  • 2 Polaroid Digital Camera (Valued at $90 each) = Jacob P. and Rosalind S. from HR
  • 1 Margarita Madness Machine (Valued at $80) = Eric V. from HR
  • 1 Shell Gift Card (Valued at $50) = Heaven T. from HR

Wow, it looks like HR really swept the grand prizes. Luck of the draw I guess.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-1564-1634/ps3fight.jpg

“Phones started to ring, inboxes started to blow up. It was great! http://blogs.zappos.com/images/emoticons/devil.gif Just some of the comments: Cheaters!...Jamie, that's statistically a little suspicious…this is gonna really upset people that everyone in HR won and no one else, wow…rofl!...You should send a follow-up picture of HR loading everything into someone's trunk.

“We let the team off the hook and sent the list of the real winners out. This caused another flood of emails: THAT WAS GREAT!!!... You guys are too much!... Here we all were with out mouths agape, when we got your second email…You punks!... You should have heard the grumbling goin on over here!!... Nice trick. LOL

PS: For those of you questioning whether Dave H. actually won the typing contest last week, he's happy to go mano a mano with anyone doubting his skills. You name the time and place.

Meanwhile, the trail-blazing Training team was having an out of this world Las Vegas Encounter! Super Trainer,
Adrienne “Abductee” C. probes into greater detail for us: “Remember the exchange student program in high school? Zappos does! Every 3 weeks or so, we fly 5-10 employees from the fulfillment center (our warehouse) in Shepherdsville, Kentucky out to Vegas, put them up at the local Station Casinos hotel, and give them rental cars to run wild around town!

“They spend a week with us in our corporate office learning how the ‘other side’ lives and works. They visit
different departments and get to do some hands on stuff. Before this group left to go home, they wanted to do a parade around the office. You know how much we love parades!http://blogs.zappos.com/!!

“A Vegas trip isn’t complete without visiting the sign!”

Some parting notes: Jobs@zappos! For all my friends!

Have any ideas on how this crazy, kooky thing we call a blog could evolve? They don’t even need to be good ones! Have a burning question, or a need to wax philosophical? Need some sage advice? I’m here for you, citizens of the interweb!

Breaking the Habit- Love at First Sight

Apr 11, 2008 by Nikki W

I've never personally been one of those butterflies-in-the-stomach, cuddle-loving, super mushy romantic types. I've had great loves, to be sure, but some aspects of love have always been beyond my comprehension. For example- having never experienced it first hand, I've always viewed such concepts as "love at first sight" with a somewhat skeptical eye.

Not to mention, I'm a creature of habit. It's not that I'm afraid to try new things, I'm just stubborn in my tastes and don't often venture outside of my box. Basic observation of the world around me, and the people therein, has lead me to the belief that when it comes to fashion, I'm a far cry from the minority in that respect. I know the brands I like, and tend to loyally stand by their side through thick and thin.

Although I don't think these are inherently bad traits, they're not exactly things to brag about. I've been working on the self improvement section of my brain. I'm trying to open myself up to new and exciting possibilities on all fronts, and working at Zappos has certainly helped in that regard (see Core Values 2, Embrace and Drive Change, 4, Be Adventurous, Creative and Open-Minded, and 5, Pursue Growth and Learning). Since Zappos.com carries so many brands (1,175 and growing!), we will occasionally have brand representatives come in to familiarize us with their products- supplying information about any new merchandise, new styles, new avenues into which they may be venturing.

Yesterday, I met our Camper representative. Admittedly, I didn't know too much about the brand going into the meeting, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

How do I explain what I saw, what I experienced? I'm still trying to process it, to be honest. They say a picture is worth a thousand words...

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1573/Camper+Twins.jpg

I never thought I'd say it, but it was love at first sight. I fell hard and I fell fast. It was my first time experiencing the sentiment, and I wasn't sure how to respond... and with Camper the hits just kept on coming.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1572/Camper+Collage.jpg

It was unnerving at first, but it didn't take long for me to give in to the wanton, uncontrollable, fantastic, wonderful, all-consuming enthusiasm that filled my heart. And it took even less time for my favorites page to grow exponentially.

What I've come to realize is that although loyalty and caution are certainly valuable sentiments, it is worthwhile on occasion to break out of routine and try new things. Have you looked through our brands list lately? You may be surprised by how quickly the love bug can come up and bite you!

Merchandising Trip to Shoe Factory

Apr 10, 2008 by Graham M.

In the spirit of Zappos Core Value #5, Pursue Growth and Learning, Jeanne and I took a group of Assistant Buyers, Merchandising Assistants and members of our Product Information team from Casual Lifestyle on a one-day, turn-around round trip to Southern California to tour the Magdesians shoe factory. One of only a few left in California, the Magdesian family was gracious enough to open their doors to us.

They have an incredible laser cutting machine that eliminates the need for costly dies and is also 30% more efficient in terms of raw materials. For those of you who don't know, a die is, in essence, a metal "cookie cutter" traditionally used to cut the upper pattern from a sheet of leather or other material. As each size and width combination required a separate die, this is one of the highest costs to a manufacturer in production. By using this new technology, Magdesians can keep the costs, and in turn, the retail prices of their U.S. made shoes significantly more affordable.

Thank you VERY much, Magdesians! It was a great trip and very educational for all!

Greetings from Customer Loyalty!

Mar 30, 2008 by Jesse C

Hey, World! My name's Jesse and I wanted to introduce the Customer Loyalty Team (CLT) to everyone. We are a fun and weird (core value #3) crew consisting of people from all walks of life.

Our hobbies include playing music, memorizing every episode of Golden Girls, making good choices, repairing vans, winning jackpots, listening to Savage Garden, healing winter borne injuries, staying at home, flying to distant countries, singing in the musical group The M-52s, sweet mustaches, and many many more activities. Actually, these are some of the hobbies of the Email Team, the team of which I hail from.

If you don't already know me or the rest of the email team, we are located right by the Copier of Doom on the east side of CLT. Yes, the copier that has a mind of it's own...but that's a topic for another blog. Until then, I will see you later.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/1447/Copier+of+doom.jpg

P.S. My favorite shoe company in the world is Globe, and I may refer to them cryptically when necessary ;) Excelsior!
