Dec 8, 2008 by Jonathan H.

One of the joys about working at Zappos is the freedom to be ourselves through our own personal style. Style shouts! Individuals identify themselves through their personal style. Taking the chaos out of the closet and using clothing as a celebration to create personal mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Matt T. : Content Coordinator for Electronics at Zappos.com.

How would you define your look?
Proletariat-chic

Playstation, Wii, or Xbox?
I'm a huge online gamer, so Xbox 360 for sure. I have a PS3 as well, but the PlayStation Network isn’t as vibrant and established as Xbox LIVE.

Is Blu-ray the best way?
Downloadable HD movies are my preferred method of viewing. Blu-ray is super awesome since it is (almost) the only way to view 1080p content with pure surround sound.

Hard or floppy disk?
Hard of course.

External, flash, or internal hard drive?
Internal hard drive. The transfer speeds are much faster than external USB drives and flash drives are too expensive for the storage space.

Handheld, marine, or vehicle GPS device?
I bring it old school with the analog map. But I would go with the Mio C520 because of the clean, sleek design and all of the features it includes for an affordable price

Which camera?
The Canon PowerShot A590 IS. Great combination of performance and quality.

Are you a digital boy in an analog world?
Definitely digital for convenience, but I’ve got love for the quality of analog.

Favorite MP3 player?

SanDisk Sansa Fuze 4.

J. Lindebergor Bikkembergs?
J. Lindeberg because of golfers such as Camilo Villegas and Aaron Baddeley.

Birdy or bogey?
What golfer doesn't love birdies?

What inspires your style?
I get inspired by people who wear t-shirts or layer long sleeves under t-shirts and wear the same jeans and sneakers every day.

Who is your favorite designer?
Is Hanes a designer?

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?
Cigarettes.

Who are your fashion/style icons?
Kevin Federline.

What are your favorite labels?
Wrangler, Faded Glory, Hanes, Levi, Route 66

What is your favorite decade for style?
50's because plain white tees and jeans were cool.

What is your favorite fabric?
Cotton.

What is your favorite color?
Whatever color free Zappos t-shirts come in that day.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?
Sneakers.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?
Second mortgage? Hell, I don't even need to break a $20 on my style.

Diamonds or pearls?
Oh god.....

Which bag?
Free Zappos man-bag

Sunglasses?
Oakleys my rich aunt bought for me.

What are your fashion rules?
Never spend more than 5 minutes picking out an outfit.

What is the most you've spent on a handbag?
20 zollars.

Would set foot in a thrift store?
Every weekend.

What is the best thing you've ever found at a thrift store?
Super great flannel when I used to wear grunge in middle school.

What is the most you've ever spent on fashion and for what item?
$90 on the Saucony Grid Stabil size 9.5 2EE before I worked at Zappos and got a discount.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-3846-2756/Hannah-blog.jpg

Today Hannah's outfit shoutouts are a vintage Moschino Cheap&Chic dress, CC Skye, Accessories & Beyond bracelets, Miss Sixty boots, and a Sheila Fajl ring.

How would you define your look?
Vintage-inspired or beachy casual, depending on what I feel like that day.

What inspires your style?
I get inspired by people who look effortlessly stylish…there’s absolutely nothing worse than someone who looks and acts like they try too hard.

Who is your favorite designer?
My all-time fave is Christian Dior, but some of my favorite contemporary designers are Zac Posen, Alexander Wang , Charlotte Ronson and Marc Jacobs…oh! and I can’t forget—TOM FORD!

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?
Underwear…just kidding. I’d say jewelry. On days I do forget to wear jewelry, I feel naked.

Who are your fashion/style icons?
I think Nicole Richie has a great instinct for style…and of course I love Kate Moss, she’s like the Twiggy of my generation.

What are your favorite labels?
I’m not too particular, as long as it fits and looks good.

Local or haole style?
Haha! I’m no haole…I can get down with the slippahs and shorts any day…just not in the office!

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style? Laid-back beach bum meets high-maintenance Vegas chick? Yeah…let’s go with that!

What is your favorite decade for style?
My favorite era for style and everything else is the 60s, and early (PRE-DISCO!) 70s.

What is your favorite fabric?
Cotton (Supima cotton to be exact)

Pleasers or Naughty Monkey?
Oh boy…Naughty Monkey, but Pleasersfor Halloween!

What is your favorite color?
I have three I can’t live without, grey, black and white! Are those even colors?

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?
Handbags and Jeans

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?
In this economy? Never!

Diamonds or pearls?
I don’t wear either

Trina Tarantino or Gasoline Glamor?
Tarina of course! She’s fabulous.

Which bag?
Bulga, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Kooba…I just like bags in general!

Sunglasses?
I love my Ray Bans, but I buy cheapies and vintage sunglasses too

What are your fashion rules?
If you can’t drink beer and still be comfortable in it, your outfit is too tight!

What is the most you’ve spent on a handbag?
800 bucks, Dior logo saddle bag, which I sadly never wear anymore.

Would set foot in a thrift store?
Of course!

What is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?
Someone found it for me….this Moschino dress!!

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?
That aforementioned Dior bag. I don’t know how I afforded it…I was a broke college student!

How would you define your look?
Where’s Waldo meets American Apparel.

What inspires your style?
I am super tall and super skinny, so anything long and lean.

Who is your favorite designer?
None currently, but I did like the design team behind Esprit in the late 80s and early 90s – Alice Heller, I think her name was.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?
Funny because I frequently have nightmares about this very topic. I usually don’t leave my house without wearing some sort of pants or shorts.
Chaps at the least.

Who are your fashion/style icons?
Vegas Vic and Buffalo Bob Smith.

What are your favorite labels?
American Apparel, Earnest Sewn, Rock and Republic and any vintage western wear brand.

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?
I like co-workers to look at my outfit and think to themselves, “Didn’t he wear that yesterday?” I probably did, but I’ll never tell. Wait! I just did. Oh dip!

What is your favorite decade for style?
I have to say that I really like the puke greens and the burnt oranges of the 70s.

What is your favorite fabric?
Cotton! Thank you Eli Whitney.

Which watch?
I don’t wear watches, but Cat S. on the Athletic team gave me a cool OBEY watch. Wasn’t that just so sweet of her?

What brand of denim do you prefer?
Please refer to the second and sixth question! Thanks.

What is your favorite color?
Green.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?
First, let me tell you that I consider $97 splurging. Now that we have that out of the way, I would splurge on a great fitting pair of designer jeans.

Kid Robot bags, apparel, or toys ?
Kid robot jewelry!

Fixed gear or freewheel?
If I say free-wheel, my friend Brandon will get mad at me and skid on my face, so I’ll say fixed-gear (even though I am a free-wheel kind of guy). How’s that for some critical sass?

Black tie, bow tie, skinny tie or bolo tie?
Skinny tie for the skinny guy.

Which bag?
Military-issued mask, chemical and biological messenger bag.

Sunglasses?
I usually don’t wear any, but I probably should considering my future is so bright.

Maui Jim or Ray-Ban's?
I used to have Maui Jim glasses, but now I prefer Paul Frank ‘Crafty Engineer’ glasses.

Paris Hilton or Playboy?
Oh boy! If I say Playboy, Paris will get upset, but if I say Paris, the bunnies will get upset. Um, you may have to ask me this again next time I’m in the grotto and have had a few martinis.

What are your fashion rules?
I just have one: Try to remember not to wear my Ed Hardy clothes.

What would you consider a fashion faux pas?
I would say the rat tail, but I’ve had one during my adult life, so…

Man bags or man jewelry?
Man bags with American flags, zig-zags and dish rags. I just wanted to rhyme.

What women’s style do you admire?
Keira Knightley is pretty hot, I mean has style that I admire.

What beer do you consider fashionable?
My favorite beer is Hitachino Nest beer – white ale. The Japanese know how to brew, dude.

Emo or grunge?
Emo, but the trick to dying your hair with kool-aid is adding a little ketchup. Trust me, I read it on the Internet.

What band do you consider fashionable at the moment?
I have to give props to my main man, David Bazan (Pedro the Lion).

Crew neck or V-neck?
I’m trying to grow pectoral muscles so I look better in American Apparel deep V-necks. My goal is to have massive pects like Brandon A. and Mike F.

Briefs or boxers?
Diesel Briefs!

Andrew Buckler or Diesel?
I am not really a sexy bastard, so I am going to say Diesel.

Would set foot in a thrift store?
Yes, in fact, I would set my whole body in one.

What is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?
I found a vintage Christian Dior sweater that I love. It’s pink and has a V-neck to show off my man muscles.

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?
I forget how much, but it was for a Betsey Johnson bag and shoes. Let’s just say that I’m a nice boyfriend. ;)

My Mythology - Creating our own living legacy at Zappos

One of the joys about working at Zappos is the freedom to be ourselves through our own personal style. Style shouts! Individuals identify themselves through their personal style. Taking the chaos out of the closet and using clothing as a celebration to create personal mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Jonathan H., Sr. Content Coordinator for Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-3082-2502/blog-shot.jpg

Today Jonathan is stylishly sporting a vintage motorcycle jacket that he customized with a John Galliano scarf, safety pins, leopard and plaid fabric and some mementos. He is also wearing a Vivienne Westwood square ring, a Vivienne Westwood crystal orb ring, other random rings, a Nixon watch, a white t-shirt, John Galliano newsprint trousers, an Alexander McQueen keychain (on his belt loop), and Diesel shoes.

How would you define your look?
It depends on the day. What inspires your style?
Anyone who is unique and creative, but knows what looks great on him or her and isn’t afraid to show it.

Who is your favorite designer?.
Vivienne Westwood, of course. But Alexander McQueen and John Galliano are my second favorite designers.

James Dean, Clive Owen, Gary Day (from Morrissey), Marc Almond, Andre 3000, Johnathon Schaech, Peter Murphy, John Galliano, Elvis Presley, Daniel Day Lewis.

What are your favorite labels?
Vivienne Westwood Man, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, C'N'C CoSTUME NATIONAL, DSquared2, King Baby, and Moschino.

*Psychobilly or Emo*?
Psychobilly, baby!!!!

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?
Passionate mystery!

What is your favorite decade for style?
1940 or early 1960.

What is your favorite fabric?
Gabardine, cotton, or leather.

What is your favorite color?
Black and blue.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?
Vivienne Westwood.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?
Yes! I already have!

Do you have any tattoos?
I have a tiger, a panther, a dragon, a Vivienne Westwood logo, a John Galliano skull.

Which bag?
My Vivienne Westwood Abstract Orb bag of course! I carry it everyday!

Sunglasses?
Dior Homme.

What are your fashion rules?
If there are any, break them!

What is the most you’ve spent on a handbag?
$800.00. My Vivienne Westwood Abstract Orb Bag, a gift to myself.

Would set foot in a thrift store?
Of course. I go about every other day.

What is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?
A King Baby chain wallet for $25.00. It’s worth about $3,000.00!!!!!!

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?
My Alexander McQueen suitcase. I think I spent a little over $900.00.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-2874-2426/police.jpg

ELENI D.

a.) What is your fashion statement?

My fashion statement I would say is Urban/Ghetto fabulous!

b.) Give me 1 Core value that you think best represents your fashion statement?

The Core value that represents my fashion statement would be "Do More With Less(I'll put a shirt on, wrap a belt around it, put on my heels(Dereon's) and I'm set)!"

c.) What has been your favorite Zappos fashion Expo so far of 2008?

The "Athletic Performance &Rideshop/Urban!"

RACHEL M.

1) What is your fashion statement?

I usually don't make "loud" fashion statements. When I shop, I try to stay away from super trendy items, and try to buy more classic pieces. I think that one of the best compliments that I get is when people tell me that I look like Jackie O! She is the epitome of classic style!

2) Give me 1 Core value that you think best represents your fashion statement?

Do More With Less! By buying clothing items that will stay in style for more than just one season, I am able to stretch my wardrobe. Typically, whenever I buy something new, I ask myself what in my existing wardrobe can be mixed and matched with the new item. I love it when I come home from a shopping trip and realize that the new top I just bought will look great with the skirt hanging in my closet or the cute flats I bought a few months ago.

3) What has been your favorite Zappos Fashion Expo so far of 2008?

The Fashion Team Expo. The shoes featured at this Expo were right up my alley. I loved checking out the designers new colors, interesting materials and beautiful styles.

GERALD M.

1.) Q: What is your fashion statement?

Beauty knows no pain or budget

2.) Give me 1 Core value that you think best represents your fashion statement?

Do more with Less. I hate spending a lot with the exception of my car payment and pony
hair boots!! Sometimes you gotta have something

3.) What has been your favorite Zappos fashion Expo so far of 2008

I haven’t been to one yet, but looking forward to it!! !

MICHELLE F.

a.) What is your fashion statement? Sophisticated fashionista

b.) Give me 1 Core value that you think best represents your fashion statement? Do more with less (money)

8:00am - Waking up to finish packing for 11:20am flight to NY, realizing that I can only check ONE bag foran entire week of work, knowing NY is never predictable weather.

10:45am - Arrived at airport, tons of people all hung over going home from a long weekend in
Vegas…love it!

12:30pm - Signing Jonathan’s fashion book, racking my brain for about an hour as to what where and who aboutmy opinions of fashion, fun

7:30pm - We land at JFK and as we wait for our bags... Leemarie’s still isn’t showing it’s face…she starts to panic, can you imagine an entire week of work appointments without any of your clothes, hair products, contact solution!

8:00pm - Looking at the cab line, no way! It’s like a 2 hour wait so we decide to take up this guy on a car service as he promises 15-20 minutes.

9:00pm - finally getting into the car! Haha, 15-20 minutes translated is 45 to 60!

10:00pm - Just pulling up to W Hotel, STARVING! Check in, grab handbag, start searching for food.

10:45pm - Find South African place called XaiXai randomly on 9th and 51st. Very quaint, wine, tapas... a great way to say hello to NY before a crazy week!

12:00am - noticing a man with a stroller passing the restaurant on the opposite side of the street going right with black bag in stroller, left without, right with…weird…

1:00am - Time for bed, long day of trend shopping and appointments tomorrow.

traditional glass of champagne as we overlook central park…I’ve never seen NY in June, amazing! We were so lucky to get a great weather day!!

8:00pm - East village for some awesome French food, had steak tartar and wine - great conversation.

9:30pm - Heading back to the hotel to check emails from today.

2:00am - Finally getting to sleep after finishing emails and reviewing business for appointments starting at 9am.

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

amazing! Such a gorgeous collection!

10:00am - Headed back to first room, see reps in hallway, they tell me that they were there at 8am! Lesson of the day, knock on the door!

11:30am - Time to eat something. Grabbed a flat bread at a little café on 57th between 5th and 6th called Mangia, killing time checking Blackberry emails before 12:30pm appointment - so loud here with sirens going off every moment!
