My Mythology - Creating our own living legacy at Zappos.

One of the joys about working at Zappos is the freedom to be ourselves through our own personal style. Style shouts! Individuals identify themselves through their personal style. Taking the chaos out of the closet and using clothing as a celebration to create personal mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Laura M., Content Manager for Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2548/laura.jpg

Today Laura is wearing a BCBGeneration top, AG Adriano Goldschmied "Angel" jeans and Vince Camuto shoes.

How would you define your look?

I would say eclectic, mixing and matching vintage with new. I’m really attracted to unique prints and one-of-a-kind items, but I try to sprinkle those in with basic pieces that fit my body type!

What inspires your style?

My mood, I guess! Sometimes I mix together different prints and accessories and leave the house like I got dressed in the dark, while other days I keep it simple with a black top and dark jeans.

Who is your favorite designer?

I don’t really have an answer for this! I appreciate all designers and the spectacle that is Runway, but I don’t really follow any one in particular.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?

A funky, patterned bag and a zip up hoodie!

Who are your fashion/style icons?

I do not follow trends or trendsetters…I’m an instinctual shopper. I buy what grabs my attention!

What are your favorite labels?

I’m not too into labels, but I like BCBG Max Azria, French Connection, anything from ‘Anthropologie’, Moschino

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?

High-Class Hippie!

What is your favorite decade for style?

For me, I find the 60’s and 70’s styles to be wearable and they fit my personality. I love wedges, flared denim, flowing tops. However, my favorite decades for style are actually the 20’s-40’s. I absolutely love those structured dresses and suits, t-strap spectators and fancy hats. Even more, I love red lipstick, matching nails and pin curls. A big part of me wishes that fancy, ever day fashion was still the norm. The bigger part of me loves to throw on a ‘wife beater’, jeans and a pair of Converse. Ooh how my split personalities conflict!

What is your favorite fabric? Modal and pima cotton, for sure!

Keep it comfy. :8}

What is your favorite color?

Right now…blue! Baby Blue and Bright Blue. Navy too!

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?

Denim. I used to snub designer denim and never understood why anyone would pay so much money for a pair of jeans, but after my first pair of Seven for All Mankind jeans I’ve been hooked. I also love AG jeans.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?

I don’t have a first mortgage…possibly because most of my extra cash goes to clothing, shoes and fun stuff for my apartment, rather than saving up for a first.

Diamonds or pearls?

I don’t care much about either! I like funky necklaces with unique charms or beads. I only really wear necklaces and on the rare occasion, a bracelet!

Which bag?

I like Lucky Brand bags a lot. I am not one of those woman who spend hundreds on the ‘it’ bag of the moment. Lucky bags are really good quality and they match my vintage look…

Sunglasses?

Give me a headache!

What are your fashion rules?

It is all about the fit for me! You can be wearing the most expensive outfit, but if it is ill fitting or just doesn’t flatter your shape, it doesn’t matter. It took me a long time to accept the fact that I can’t wear spaghetti straps, tube tops or long skirts. Accentuate the positive and divert attention from the negative!

What is the most you’ve spent on a handbag?

$160 at the most.

Would set foot in a thrift store?

Any time, any thrift store!

If your answer was yes, what is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?

A really cool vintage bag. Luggage leather, drawstring bag with a long strap. It was my favorite bag up until an ex-boyfriend spilled juice all over it.

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?

Beautiful tan Hugo Boss boots (about 230$).

My Mythology - Creating our own living legacy at Zappos.

One of the joys about working at Zappos is the freedom to be ourselves through our own personal style. Style shouts! Individuals identify themselves through their personal style. Taking the chaos out of the closet and using clothing as a celebration to create personal
mythology or legend is something I have been fascinated by.

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Jen S., Buyer for Couture Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2525/sidary.jpg

Jen S. is draped in a delightful Emilio Pucci tank, a Dolce and Gabbana black skirt and Prada sandals.

How would you define your look?
That’s a hard question since I don’t feel I have just one look. When you asked me to wear my favorite outfit I had a hard time picking just one. I have loved everything in my closet at some point in time.

What inspires your style?
Me, and I hope that didn’t sound bad. I buy amazing pieces from tons of designers from couture to moderate prices. I mix and match them to make my own style. You will rarely see me in one brand from head to toe. What makes style in my mind is to be able to mix it all up and still look like a million bucks.

Who is your favorite designer?
Miuccia Prada…She manages to out do herself with every collection and be so ahead of the trends. The items she designs are classic with so much style but still timeless. I can’t stop myself from buying her pieces season after season.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?
My credit card.

Who are your fashion/style icons?
This may sound silly but the ladies from Sex and the City which really means Patricia Field. She has made so many designers household names, it is incredible.

What are your favorite labels?
DSquared2, Alexander McQueen, Etro, Roberto Cavalli and Prada of course!

Preppy or Punk?
No question…PUNK!

How would you define your mythology that you portray through your style?
I just like to look and feel good about myself everyday and this is expressed through my fashion choices. If I love what I am wearing I feel amazing!

What is your favorite decade for style?
For me it is always the future. Being a buyer and seeing what’s to come in 6 or 9 months I am more excited about what’s coming than what’s happened.

What is your favorite fabric?
I have 2 extremes…cotton or leather.

Psychedelic ‘60’s or Rockabilly?
Psychedelic.

What is your favorite color?
Green.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?
Sandals and Boots.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?
My mom had me calculate the total of all the footwear in my closet and I could have put a down payment on a house and that was years ago.

Diamonds or pearls?
Diamonds and lots of them.

Marc Jacobs or Alexander McQueen?
McQueen because he is so demented.

Which bag?
Right now it’s McQueen.

Sunglasses?
Right now it’s Prada.

What are your fashion rules?
Don’t ever be over dressed or under dressed!

What is the most you’ve spent on a handbag?
If it’s not $1,000 it’s not a handbag in my world.

Would set foot in a thrift store?
Of course! I took my boss Eileen once in the East Village and she about died.

If your answer was yes, what is the best thing you’ve ever found at a thrift store?
A vintage Valentino black dress. It didn’t fit me so I gave it to a customer of mine at my last job. She was ecstatic.

What is the most you’ve ever spent on fashion and for what item?
$3,200 for a mini tangerine Prada suitcase. I got it in Rome with my mom.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas (or Should I Say 2290)

Sep 17, 2008 by Melissa L.

The conference rooms in the new Zappos 2290 office don't go from a boring ol' empty room to WOW over night. It takes a lot of hard work, creativity and sometimes staple guns and hot glue to pull off these famous meeting areas. The fashion department took on the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Room" as well as "The Elvis Room" and not to mention three others. They're a busy group, but they don't seem to mind too much, the Fashion Merchandisers are known to dress themselves as well, so I wouldn't expect their conference rooms to be any different. I wonder if they'd be willing to give the Creative Service 1 room a face lift.

Way to decorate Fashion Merchandising! Can't wait to see all the 2290 conference rooms once they've been officially made over Zappos style!

What is someone trying to say through their style?

Join me in the discovery. Each week I will take an employee from Zappos and find out their personal psychology through their favorite outfits.

Today we study the mythology of Elisa C., Assistant Buyer for Fashion at Zappos.com.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2459/Elisa.jpg

How would you define your look?

Simple with a splash I like to have 1 or 2 pieces that stand out and then dress it down a bit. I like to wear a cute skirt with sneakers or maybe jeans and a t-shirt with a dressier shoe.

What inspires your style?
Simplicity. I like things that look special or hard to find. Or stuff that looks really neat, but it didn't take a whole lot of time to put together (even though we know we girls need to spend a lot of time primping!)

Who is your favorite designer?

I know this may sound weird because I don't necessarily dress really crazy, but I always love to see what Betsey Johnson has to offer.

What fashion item would you never leave the house without?

That's a hard one because I like to change things all the time; bags, jewelry etc... if I had to pick though I guess I would say jewelry. It can make or break the outfit and I always have a lot of fun picking something out.

Who are your fashion/style icons?

Audrey Hepburn - she is my all time favorite.

What are your favorite labels?

Betsey Johnson, L.AM.B, Hype, Kensie are just a couple...

What is your favorite decade for style?

I like the 20's - there's just something about the flapper look - I also think I like it because that's when women started to be a little rebellious.

What is your favorite fabric?

Well I am always down for a good knit t-shirt with something cute on the front - Kensie has a lot of cute knit wear.

What is your favorite color?

My most favorite of favorite colors is red and always will be, but right now I am still digging the Kelly green and jewel tone purple.

What item do you allow yourself to splurge on?

Usually a cute top from one of the brands mentioned above.

Do you need to take out a second mortgage for your style?

No. every once in a while I will go on a shopping spree. Then later have buyer's remorse and return the items I "don't need", but I really do end up keeping most of it though - I can't help myself.

Diamonds or pearls?

Can I say both? I love diamonds because they are pretty and sparkly, but I love pearls because they are classic.

Which bag?

For handbags I like Lucky - pretty much whatever catches my eye

Sunglasses?

Betsey Johnson

What are your fashion rules?

Keep it simple and comfortable, but have some fun with color or patterns - there will always be some color that looks fabulous on you.

What is the most you've spent on a handbag?

Maybe around $100 - I'm not too sure.

Would set foot in a thrift store?

Ehh - I like finding discounts like the next person, but I am not a bargain shopper - I will go if I have to, but I don't have the patience to go through all the racks to find that "one" special item

What is the most you've ever spent on fashion and for what item?

On a single item I would have to say maybe a Hype dress... I think it was around $120 - $160...

Snowboots? In style or out of style?

They are definitely in - how can you not love snowboots?!?! It makes me think of the times I trampled through the snow as a little kid - I had pretty white and pink boots. Like I said, I love color and Rubber Duck has some pretty fabulous boots coming in this fall!

Jonathan kills exotic blue snakes in the name of fashion

Jul 30, 2008 by Hannah E.

Ok...not exactly, but my fashion-forward neighbor Jonathan showed up to work today with the most pimp-ish jacket I've seen within these Zappos walls. Keep in mind that we are located in Las Vegas and it's the middle of a scorching hot summer! That doesn't stop the fashionably-adventurous Jonathan from breaking out his pimp-blue "faux" snake blazer. Note to self: animal prints are going to be hot trend this fall! Must stock up now!

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more devoted to style and “haute” fashion than our very own Jonathan H.

Jonathan, a content coordinator for couture footwear and apparel, is infamously obsessed with Vivienne Westwood. So, it was no surprise to see him live up to his high-style ways during our recent trip to New York for the FFANY show.

Here is the always dapper Jonathan in the lobby of the W Hotel working on writing some awesome descriptions while sporting a fancy ascot. Only this “couture connoisseur” could pull it off!

Style Notes:
Black velvet blazer: vintage ,ascot: vintage, white button down: Dolce & Gabbana
Jeans: Levi’s
Boots: Ted Baker
