Fun can be found rain or shine!

What's more fun than good old fashioned fried chicken, potato salad, corn hole games and a badminton match? Add a water balloon fight and the chance of getting struck by lighting and you've got the quarterly KY Content team outing!! Members of the photo, imaging, video and styling teams at the Zappos fulfillment center in Shepherdsville, KY ventured out into what looked like sunshine for an afternoon of fun, food and games at Bernheim Forest. Though we were rained out in the end, we left with full bellies, smiles and another team photo to add to our scrapbooks. See you in Quarter 3 everyone!

Spirit Week in Kentucky

Jul 28, 2009 by Michele K

Blue hair spray and Face painting?... Spirit Sticks?... Cheer contests and fake tattoos?... Where are we, at summer camp?

No, this is spirit week at Zappos.com... didn't see that one coming did ya?

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-5970-3227/spirit-weekready.jpg

When I started here 2 years ago, I walked into an environment that I had never been around before. I was surrounded by people who enjoyed being at work. Within a month, I was hooked, not only on the culture, spirit, and values of Zappos, but on the happiness I felt when I went home. Still to this day I feel the same way. Spirit week to me isn't only a week out of the year.... it lasts the whole year. As of June 28th, I became B1 singles Lead.... I never would have been motivated enough to go for a lead position if it hadn't been for the spirit and culture of Zappos pulsing through me, and THAT'S A FACT!!!!

Joon Fools Day!!

Jul 16, 2009 by Christina Y

It’s official. June 30th has been designated Joon Fools Day by the Photo Department. In a remarkable attempt to pull the greatest prank on our resident prankster, the entire team got together and, with some help from HR and some well placed articles by CNN, we convinced our resident prankster and techie nerd that Zappos had bought up all of the newly released iPhones and passed them out to team members at our All Hands Meeting a couple of weeks ago. One that Joon didn’t attend.

We kept the joke going all day with congratulations e-mails from HR and websites mentioning that the state of Kentucky was completely sold out. Joon was so eaten up that he missed out that by lunchtime he was begging those that had received one to either let him buy theirs at deep discounts or trading 6 hours of hard labor for one.

In the end we rounded up the team and pretended to present a new phone to Joon. Little did he know it was an iPhone box filled with images of middle fingers- a little joke that Joon likes to do with Post-it notes throughout the department.

Check out how excited he is in the video- he knows that something exciting is going on but he has no idea what lies in store. Thanks for being such a good sport Joon, and remember that you always get what you dish out tenfold!!

The Zappos.com Fulfillment Center was recently honored for excellence at the Best Places to Work in Kentucky awards dinner! Thirty of our managers attended the awards ceremony in Lexington, KY where they anxiously awaited the ranking results. The award is based on an assessment of our employee policies and the results of the internal employee survey. Zappos.com was recognized as #22 on the list of best places to work in the “large companies” category. Hundreds of companies in Kentucky are assessed annually to compete for this honor and we’re very humbled to be on the list! It is because of our employees’ determination to drive our culture that we are truly one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky!

Serenading the Photo Department in KY

Jul 6, 2009 by Michele K

Here at Zappos, our KY Content coordinates monthly team-building activities to Build a Positive Team and Family Spirit. We are quite the large group, but we go above and beyond to try to stay close to one another despite this fact! Events have included cupcake-eating contests, water balloon fights, cornhole tournaments, extreme Jenga and cream-pie Supervisor target practice...among many others.

When my turn came up to coordinate a team building exercise, I decided to try and do something a little different. I have played guitar for many years, so, with that in mind, I decided to serenade my co-workers and grace them with the gift of song.

So we decided to have a sing-along with the entire department. Basically, I picked a few songs that I think everyone knows (plus a couple of my personal favorites), put together a set list - ranging from Johnny Cash to The Smiths - brought in my acoustic guitar, handed out lyric sheets and gave it a go.

The audience was receptive and sang the words right back at me...so, all in all, this was a success! If anything, I think I did manage to do something that was memorable considering all of the random, amusing things that occur here pretty much on a daily basis.

Kentucky All Hands

Last week the entire team from the Kentucky Fulfillment center held their all hands meeting to celebrate our 10 year anniversary, as well as get everyone together to review our performance in 2008 and our goals for 2009. The Kentucky fulfillment center also built a time capsule inside of which each department placed several items that represent moments from 2008 and 2009. We'd love to tell you exactly what went inside, but you'll have to wait until 2013 or so to find out!

Nibble the Half-Byte

We, the C-Shift of Tech Support, have created life, and we shall call him… Nibble.

Nibble T. Half-Byte is our floppy haired new friend that was created out of madness, err… out of creating fun and a little weirdness. C-Shift (Blake and Kristy) each work alone except for one night a week. We get lonesome on some of the quiet nights as we work on our projects. It gets tough not having anyone immediately available to bounce ideas off of, and not having someone there when you’re thinking too hard about how to resolve an issue to tell you ‘Hey, silly, plug in the power cord!’. For these moments, Nibble is there for us. Don’t let his goofy exterior fool you; he’s a very intelligent and complex Tech Support Rep Jr..

Nibble The Half-Byte’s Bio

Hi! My name is Nibble, I work in Tech Support. I specialize in staring issues straight in the face and… well, waiting until staring fixes it. I am also a great tamer of the mischievous Kiva bots. I am a very hard worker and I love being part of the team. I resolve tickets in creative ways; usually I just throw myself into it (literally, as I have no arms to do much else). I love to have fun and frolic about the warehouse. I recently went on an outing with the team. We rode the conveyor coaster, played hide and seek, and worked on the world record for the biggest rubber band ball EVER! I also met a lot of new friends. Most people don’t quite understand me, and I love Zappos because everyone here accepts me for who I am. If you’re ever in KY and need some help with your computer stop by and I’ll help ya out!
Your friend,
Nibble

Today is the Kentucky All Hands Meeting for all Zappos Fulfillment Center employees! Matter of fact, it's happening right now! Brett is there and these photos are literally from a few minutes ago. We wanted to show the meeting as it is happening!

As you may have seen, on June 1st, the employees from the Vegas headquarters all met at the Henderson Pavilion for this 2nd annual event, and now it's Kentucky's turn.

Just like in Vegas, the 2009 yearbooks were handed out to everyone, and excitement is in the air!

Sisters Get Zapponized!

Jun 6, 2009 by Michele K

Cinderella’s motto was: ”One shoe can change your life.” The Sisters’ motto is: “One shoe store has changed our lives!” Discovering Zappos.com years ago has been the “land of dreams come true” for two Southern sisters with feet as difficult to fit as Cinderella’s! (Think size 5.5 and 6N…) The added bonus of seeing hundreds of shoes from every conceivable angle without leaving the comfort of our homes can only be topped by Zappos saving the best surprises for last: free shipping both ways and delivery the next business day. Can you say INSTANT gratification?

The real reason for this note is to thank the “team members” in charge of shipping and receiving who spend their days inside the Shepherdsville, Kentucky, Zappos facility. My sister’s birthday present to herself and a sister surprise for me was a visit to Zappos in May 2009. This was a true fantasy adventure loaded with perks.

Prior to our flight to Louisville, while selecting magazines at the airport, Sissy found one with an article about Zappos and their CEO, Tony Hsieh. At that point, I had no idea of the significance of ‘the find’ except that we both love Zappos! Just before boarding, Sissy gave me the itinerary of our adventure for the day and many screams later, we arrived in Louisville. A quick twenty minute drive had us at the front door of the shipping/receiving/outlet of Zappos. Ever wonder how your shoes magically arrive the next day? Hmmm… Louisville is the hub for UPS.

On arrival, the plasma screen in the lobby was flashing a “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” greeting to my sister Alicia. That was cool enough, but was only the beginning of a wild afternoon with the Zappos team members. Sissy asked everyone who materialized in the lobby to sign her magazine while we awaited Stefanie, the representative who created this magical event. Her energy came through the door before she did and we seemed to hit warp speed as she ushered us through the security “phone booth” and into the Internet Café where team members were yelling “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”; waving pom-poms and directing our attention to a birthday cake, crown & huge Zappos bags filled with goodies for us. After much singing, signing (the magazine) and cake eating, we were introduced to the elusive, Craig A.. He even offered to take Sissy’s magazine to Las Vegas and ask Tony Hsieh to autograph it for her!

Then, it was tour time with Byron and Julie. As a member of the photo department, Julie creates many of the incredible photo shots of clothing, shoes and other items found on the website. Nine shots of each shoe in every color, any way you do the math, that’s a lot of shots! She had been asked to create a photo journal of our visit and as an aside, to answer all my questions. Believe it or not, as we passed through the photo department we interrupted a staff meeting (where someone was wearing a pirate hat and parrot) and folks stopped the chatter to yell, “Happy Birthday”.

Byron was the enthusiastic tour leader who was educating and entertaining us about how each area of the facility functions. At several locations, Sissy was encouraged by Byron to test her skills in the multiple roles of Zappos’ team members. Her favorite job was that of “picker”. She loved the idea of being paid to walk up to 14 miles per day. If you thought that the products that you order get to you by an automated method; think again. Real people pull, pack and ship those babies! Being a nerd, I was fascinated by the “Kivas”, the robots of Zappos. There are 70 of these little orange critters scurrying from station to station in a room the size of a university football stadium and each one has its own name, courtesy of members with senior status.

Following our personalized tour, we had time to visit the outlet store where Sissy was especially taken with a pair of Marc Jacobs denim heels with zippers and bling. I couldn’t get over a pair of “clear” mules (think ‘glass slippers’) with 5 inch heels. Meanwhile, dear Julie was snapping away and laughing as we tried on the most outrageous, the most expensive, the most beautiful and even a few conservative pairs. If I had more grace while hobbling across the floor, I would have come home with RED stilettos!

Customer service really does give Zappos the edge; every member we met had energy, enthusiasm and devotion, not only for Zappos, but for their colleagues. We would love to meet Tony! Then we could thank him for encouraging his team members to exceed the customer’s expectations in any and every way possible. The folks in Shepherdsville earned our respect and gratitude. Stefanie, thank you, thank you, thank you for creating an experience that certainly qualifies as “the adventure of our year” and a birthday extravaganza that no one can top! Overall, it was a fantasy come true where our every thought was anticipated and fulfilled. Customer service exceeded excellence.

And yes, we called and e-mailed everyone we knew about our visit as soon as we got home that evening.

Totally devoted to Zappos…Valerie & Alicia (the birthday girl)
P.S. You must have a reservation to tour the facility.

Split Shift has the Spirit

Jun 5, 2009 by Michele K

In order to keep Zappos a great place to work, employees continue to find ways to live our core values. One of our 10 core values is #7: "Build a positive team and family spirit." The Kentucky Fulfillment Center came up with a culture baton to represent this.

The objective of passing this CV #7 culture baton was to get to know some of our co-workers a little better. Split Shift was given the opportunity to invite another group in the KYFC to enjoy some good ol' hospitality! When you think of a family gathering, what comes to mind - FOOD! That's always my favorite part about 'em!

So, in the passing of our baton, and building a Team and Family Spirit, the group decided to bring in desserts to enjoy with the PM Part-timers. Cakes, cookies and more. Boy, they were super delicious, too!

We ended the gathering by inviting them into our family portrait, which is now posted on our "Important Stuff" board for all to see!

Pie -O- Rama

May 29, 2009 by Michele K

In the Photo Dept in KYFC we have a team meeting once a month. It was my turn to shine and make a team building exercise and do something extraordinarily awesome. For my first time at a team building exercise, it went well. The best part was shoving some pies into a few of our supervisor’s faces. That alone, made everyone very happy.

It all started with a game I created called “Chain Letter.” The objective: Good communication. How it starts- Two supervisors on each end of a line with team members in between. The first supervisor relays a message down the line of people that had to be acted out by the supervisor at the end of that line. Out of four teams, only one was victorious. That team was the Queens. The winning team took a pie and put in the faces of all the supervisors that were on the not so lucky remaining teams. This was where the fun began!

We gave our Supervisors their attire, including shower caps and garbage bags, sat them down in a chair and took turns smashing whip cream pies in their faces. Everyone had a blast, even the ones who received the onslaught of warm whip cream gooeyness.

This just goes to show that no matter the situation, either winning or losing, it’s all about making it a fun and everlasting experience here at Zappos.

Derby is no longer just for us Bluegrass residents! Robots can have Derby too! Right?! Yes they can! Some KIVA folks flew in last week from Boston to show us that! They came to the Zappos.com Kentucky warehouse and recorded some robot action! With that they put together some awesome stop action work to create the scenes for the KIVA Kentucky Derby!

They did a great job! Watch it!
