Zappos Wedding!

Feb 24, 2009 by Angela T

You may have heard the news, but our beloved benefits goddess, Sarah, is officially off the "market". She married her man, Brandon, a picking lead here in the Kentucky Fulfillment Center. Naturally, I had to get to the bottom of this... so I asked her a few nosey, but imporant questions. Please read on as I uncovered this mystery.

How did you and your husband meet?

We actually met through mutual friends a very long time ago. He dated one of my good friends when we were 14 and I even chaperoned a date for him with another girl during the first 3 or 4 years that we were friends. i was asked out on a date with him on a note on a white board by my room-mate, who he had asked to ask me out for him. ( are you confused yet? )

Where did you get married, and why didn't you have it at Zappos so we could all attend?

We got married in Shelbyville, only because we can't have alcohol on the premisis here, the dress code AND you can't have a shotgun wedding without a shot-gun, and guns are also a no-no at our warehouse. However, I will totally consider having our anniversary party here next year for everyone.

Was your cake shaped like a shoe?

Actually no, it was a 3 tier white cake with black branches and cherry blossoms on it.

If you had to wear a brand from Zappos to be married in, what would you have chosen?

He would probably wear Affliction, and I would choose Betsy Johnson.

If you and your husband were animals, what do you think you would be?

I would want to be a basset hound, they are so cute and lovable, and he would definitely be a cat. I could see him being perfectly happy sleeping all day and just getting up to eat and poop.

Do you guys have nicknames for each other, and what are they?

His is, baba and mine is booger bear.

What were your something "new, old, borrowed & blue" items?

The oldest thing I had on was my underwear. I had new shoes. I borrowed make-up because I forgot mine, and I wore my Zappos sweatsuit to set up and break down the whole wedding AND I wore it for my rehearsal dinner.

So as you can see by these answers, it looks like the rumors are true. They really are headed for happily ever after. Another Zappos union for the history books. The picture is truly worth a million words.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM!!!

Feb 13, 2009 by Angela T

On Tuesday, February 10, we had our ice cream social for the whole KY content department. We as a team were challenged to each write an entry for the company culture book. Everyone had to write an entry in order to have the party. We all went around encouraging those who were unsure and helped them out if they needed it. At the end, almost everyone did do it. It was a great "building team and family spirit" experiment.

Luckily, because the turn out was SO CLOSE to 100%, we still had our parties!! B-shift had theirs after lunch time. The girls all sat around in a circle to have an "ice cream slumber party".

Theresa came up with that idea and she asked everyone to tell about their first real kiss. We found out some juicy stuff. Did you all know that Laura's lasted five hours?? And that Theresa can't stand to hear the word saliva?

We had great laughs while the boys of the group watched us from a distance, laughing and commenting to each other about the things we were talking about. Eventually some of them joined the girls group. We ended the party with everyone talking about astronomy and how to read our astrological birth charts. We went back to work with a sugar high that quickly crashed, causing us all to feel very sleepy.

Thanks to our managers who put this party together! What a great time!

Snow, Ice, Snow, Ice, Snow, Ice in Kentucky

Gorgeous, but dangerous! Snow would be a lot more fun if it didn't also carry along with it downed power lines and trees. Tuesday was the start of it, and Wednesday might have been the worst of it. For half of the day on Wednesday the power was out here at the Zappos.com Warehouse in KY. Which left us a bit behind on orders, and people from different departments pitched in on Thursday to get orders picked and sent out to our awesome customers! :D

Getting to work was no fun; I personally wanted to give up when it took me almost 2 hours to clean my car off and get it out of my complex, but we were having the Fishery for lunch on Thursday! Who can miss that?!

Despite the danger and pain the storm caused, it leaves some beautiful sites to behold. Many people from our Photo Department took pictures. Here are a few of mine. Hope everyone is safe and warm today!

Bags O' Bands!

Dec 26, 2008 by Angela T

Zappos photo department made the FC a bit cleaner and safer last week with a little friendly competition. Both A and B shifts challenged each other to see who could collect the most bands lying around that have come off the shoe boxes. These bands are found floating around everywhere and are very easily tangled and slipped on, it only takes a second to pick one up as you travel through the warehouse. The photo team members collected enough bands to fill two large trash bags in one week!!

Congrats to the winning team members!!!

Jingle Bells, Zappos sells, lots and lots of shoes!

The Photo department decided that we wanted to share some Christmas cheer last week. We decorated Christmas cards and delivered them to our fellow team members in other departments. Not only did we deliver cards but we delivered the sound of our BEAUTIFUL singing voices. YES we sang Christmas carols and it was AWESOME.

So maybe some of us don't have the best voices (like myself) but we rocked it! Our song list included Jingle Bells, Rudolph, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and Frosty the Snowman. We started our journey with HR and finished with picking. We received smiles and laughter, and I think we may have scared a few people! Happy Holidays Everyone!

Photo B-shift Holiday Bash!

Dec 16, 2008 by Angela T

On Friday December 12th, B shift photo department had a secret Santa/Holiday bash!! It was my first Christmas party with the Zappos team. It was also our last night of a full B shift team before our schedule change the following Monday.

We put our own names in a bag and drew someone else's name out to get them up to a $10.00 gift. Most everyone brought in yummy food and / or gifts. It was a lot of fun and tummy filling! There were lots of laughs, hugs and smiles. It was very special to me to have the great opportunity to party with the TM's that are going to a different shift and the TM's that I still work with on the new B shift. I feel that I've gotten close to many Zappos employees and I feel very grateful to have these people in my everyday work day and life. One thing that separates Zappos from other companies is the family atmosphere and culture. We all smile, hug, cry, walk, eat, talk and work together. I can truly say that I love coming into work and I love Zappos.

Since I've been employed here ( since August ) I've been blown away by all the fun interactive games, parties, team building and much more. I love the culture of this company compared to most, actually, there is no company that compares to this wonderful place! Zappos Rocks! In a given work day here at Zappos we work hard, play hard and laugh hard.

The Secret Santa party this past Friday was very special to all that attended. At one point in the night I took a step back to observe everyone having a good time. I looked around and everyone was giving compliments on the great food and thanks for the gifts received. It truly made me smile and I thought to myself I hope that I will have this job for along time to come.

Thank you all for the great time Friday and I look forward to the next party and great quality time with all of you.

Dec 14, 2008 by Angela T

On 12/9/08, the Photo Dept. had their 1st Annual Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament. It was a long, tough journey through the brackets to determine the winner. Weird hand gestures were made, sore hands abounded. But in the end, the true Champion was decided. Shane R. took home the trophy as the Rock, Paper, Scissors Champ. This day will go down forever in history. Long live the Champ!

In Loving Memory of Max McLeod

Dec 9, 2008 by Angela T

It is with a heavy heart that I sit and write this tribute today, because here at Zappos, we are not just co-workers, but we create such friendships with each other that we truly care for one another as family. Last friday we were devastated to hear that Max McLeod, someone who has been a part of our family, has passed away. He died Friday morning from injuries he received in a car accident.

Max was a great person, a great friend and a long time member of our family. Always playing fun pranks on friends, helping those in need and always going the extra mile for anyone of us that asked. He brought a lot of laughs and smiles to our workplace and our memories of him will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family today, and throughout what will be undoubtedly a hard holiday season.

Max's obituary has been posted here, ( which has the times and location of his services )

Please have a safe holiday season and be sure to always keep yourself, and all others traveling on the road safe, not just through this highly celebrated time of year, but at all times.

Max, we loved you dearly. You will always be in our hearts and memories.

A Photo Department Thanksgiving Feast!!

Dec 4, 2008 by Angela T

Turkey day is a day of celebration every year here at Zappos in the photo department! We always have a pot-luck style Thanksgiving dinner sometime around the end of November. That being said, we would like to thank everyone for making our Thanksgiving feast a great one! We were all WOWed with so much great food!!

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-3914-2798/thanksgiving.jpg

It was especially nice to have all of the photo & imaging team together for a movie, good food , card games, board games, and of course, Rock Band 2. We spent about 4 hours being just like a family. Catching up with those we don't see as often on other shifts, laughing about the good times and laughing off the bad times. We had the special treat of one of our former supervisors, Steph, coming in to visit and spend time with us all as well. Having her here to celebrate meant a lot, since she was such an important part in creating this tradition for our team years ago. All we needed was a nap after all that eating, because the turkey wasn't the only thing stuffed that day!

Thanks to everyone, and we are looking forward to doing it all again next year!

Kaya was told there was a meeting in the photo studio today. However, the Superheroes in the KY warehouse planned a surprise party for team mate Kaya. Kaya is a stylist on the KY Photo Team. He styles, designs, and assists the photographers so the product images on http://www.zappos.com/ look amazing. Keep up the great work team!

Thanks for putting together this surprise party and showing our Core Value of Building a Positive Team and Family Spirit really works! Not to mention, its fun and, who doesn't love cake?! By the way, I'm not sure who has the creepy voice saying "this is cake in the dark" but enjoy the video.

Good Luck Kaya!

Long time no blog..right?! We've been busy moving and getting situated in our new habitat. We finally got moved into our HUGE new Studio in the third quadrant of the warehouse. You know, next to the cute little KIVA bots!

We get to watch them glide, spin around, and nap all the time. Life must be so great if you're a KIVA baby! If you're in the warehouse, you should stop by and check out our living space. Its massive. I tried to get a few photos for you, just show you how big it is, but the photos don't even do it justice! In our new area, we have Strobe City where all the apparel (adults and kids) are photographed, We have a meeting room, known as Hall of Justice, some of the production coordinators are in here, and Image Coordinators reside by the Hall of Justice. I do wish we were a bit closer to our other studio, because I miss seeing the photographers, assistants, and production coordinators over there! We are all one big happy KY Content family no matter what studio! Come and Visit us!!

I took this photo from the very back of the room to try to show you the size of this place!

Jeff, the traveling Gnome!

Meet Jeff, our resident traveling Gnome. Jeff's permanent resident is at Jess T., our Project Coordinator's desk in landlocked Kentucky. But, every once in a while, Jeff gets bored and he needs to get out and experience the world at large as any good traveling Gnome would. Recently, Jeff packed his bags and made his way to gorgeous, sunny Southern California.

Here you can see some pictures of the man himself partying it up all over Los Angeles and San Diego.

Where will Jeff's travels take him next? One can only guess...

Feeling the Love!

Aug 12, 2008 by Angela T

In the online world of customer service a company like Zappos prides themselves on WOWing their customers. Whether it be having a special brand or particular shoe size in stock or being able to deliver an order in less than 24 hours, practically every department gets their fair share of praise.

Not too long ago, the Photo Department had a great moment in the sun and it came to us through an unexpected source. Skip Jackson is the Photography Instructor at Nashville State Community College and has been using Zappos' images as part of his curriculum for several years now. With Zappos' images setting the bar he begins each semester encouraging his students to think like customers. He asks questions such as, "How would you like to see this presented?" and "How can I show this product in the best light?" to get them thinking less like fine art and more like an applied art. "Chances are their work isn't going to be hanging in the Louvre. I want to teach them that these are marketable skills and that they can use them to put food on the table."

After one of his students informed him that Zappos photography department was just down the road in Louisville, Ky. Skip (pardon the pun) jumped at the chance to meet everyone involved in the photography process. Needless to say those of us in the photography department couldn't have been happier to have our own personal cheerleader for a day. Skip made his way from table to table and praised each photographer not only for their ability to shoot in a high volume environment but also for maintaining such quality standards. It was a fantastic opportunity on both parts - we as photographers got to have our ego stroked and Skip got a chance to learn the names and faces behind the images he presents his class every day.
