As some of you may know, our content team, in Nevada and now in Kentucky, are creating our very own product description videos. The videos are meant to highlight some of the really cool products that we sell on the site, as well as some of the talent that we have employed under our collective roof. On March 13th, some of our already famous Photo Dept. members participated in a fashion show for our valued customers. They strutted their stuff down the runway and modeled some fashionable Merrill clothing. Katie B., Kaya F., Michele K., Mark S., Shane R., April S., Mindy B., Jimmy M., Ashley P., Taurie M. and Amanda E. all took their turns walking it out. They modeled different styles and collections. All had fun and it was a great time for our wonderful customers to enjoy some food and our great Zappos culture.

1st Annual KY Wow Awards!

Mar 25, 2009 by Christina Y

It was last quarter of 2008 and we were in need of some good old-fashioned morale boosting. The photo studios were quiet, the fun was at a standstill, and the core values were on the back burner of everyone's minds. We knew that the team members thought the world of each other but they just weren't really saying how much they genuinely care or how working with them made their days better.

What we really wanted to know is: If they had to put a core value with the way they felt about their team members, what core value would it be?

So, Betsy D. (Photo Operations Manager) and I decided to host "The WOW Awards." We set out a ballot box with voting ballots (designed by Jon B., Senior Image Coordinator) next to it. On the voting ballot, they were to write the team members name and the Core Value that they exemplify. It was completely anonymous. After 3 months of open voting, we collected the ballots and had 10 WOW Award winners for each Core Value. We hosted an Awards ceremony with handmade trophies for each Core Value and a certificate (designed by Kyle S., Senior Image Coordinator) to hand out to all WOW Award winners.

All the ballots were placed up on the Photo Studio wall by Katie B. (Senior Photographer) so that all the ballots could be read by everyone. Everyone brought appetizers and hors d'oeuvres as well as games to play. We even had a room set up with an X-box, which was a big hit. Here is Matt W. (Senior Photo Assistant) happily accepting his WOW Award for Core Value #8, Do More With Less. His trophy was decked out in 8-track tapes, a Fisher Price camera, and other miniature items, like dollar bills. Thanks to everyone for voting! We look forward to our 2nd WOW Awards so get out there and vote!

Science Fair!

Mar 7, 2009 by Christina Y

Zappos was recently asked for volunteers to judge the 3rd grade Science Fair at Nicholas Elementary School. Tenicia S., Val F. and Lacy G. stepped up to the challenge. “When Stefanie sent out the e-mail about volunteering as judges at the Science Fair, we looked at it like a great opportunity to become involved with the community.”, stated Tenicia and Val as to why they participated.

Lacy talks about her experience, “My experience was amazing! The kids were so personable and interactive, it was so cute! They were all intrigued by my tattoos and I think that broke the ice a little for the nervous ones. Just seeing the excitement in their eyes when it was their turn to explain the presentations was priceless. I would definitely love to have the chance to experience this again! I'm glad Zappos gives us the opportunity to volunteer and help out in the community.”

The winners had projects such as the Bottle Band, Magnetic Compass and Canology. The judges went back to the school later for the awards ceremony. When they walked in the gym, all the students were waving and yelling, "Hi judges!!" “We really felt like a celebrities.”, said Tenicia. As a special prize all nine winners received a Zappos Monopoly game.

Pass the Baton!

Mar 1, 2009 by Christina Y

What does half a keyboard, hot chocolate, puzzles, cupcakes and bowling have in common?

It is a way to pass a culture baton! Starting at the January All Hands Meeting, 10 batons, representing the Zappos.com Core Values, were distributed to various departments. When a team receives a baton they must demonstrate the core value in a fun and creative way as they pass it to another department or shift. For example, Core Value #8 Do More With Less Baton was passed by replacing a laptop with a half (yes half) of a keyboard. CV #7: Build a Positive Team and Family Sprit included one of the tastier demonstrations, a cupcake challenge! Teams only have two weeks to pass the baton on. Once the baton has been passed, an entry is made into the culture baton log. At the end of the year, the results will be tallied and we will see which baton has the most passes!

Zappos Gear Day!

We have started a monthly dress up theme for each department in the warehouse. This month, the Content team chose to wear as much Zappos stuff as possible. We had some pretty creative ideas. Some people wore as many Zappos shirts as they could get their hands on. We had a pair of binoculars made from Zappos shot glasses. We had a lot of Zappos hats, some strategically placed Zappos ducks, some hand made creations including a zollar headband and artisically altered Zappos shirts. I took the Zappos card deck and pinned the cards on my jeans and put the Zappos car visor around my neck like a cape. We all had a great time creating some fun and weirdness in the Photo Studio!

Snow, Ice, Snow, Ice, Snow, Ice in Kentucky

Gorgeous, but dangerous! Snow would be a lot more fun if it didn't also carry along with it downed power lines and trees. Tuesday was the start of it, and Wednesday might have been the worst of it. For half of the day on Wednesday the power was out here at the Zappos.com Warehouse in KY. Which left us a bit behind on orders, and people from different departments pitched in on Thursday to get orders picked and sent out to our awesome customers! :D

Getting to work was no fun; I personally wanted to give up when it took me almost 2 hours to clean my car off and get it out of my complex, but we were having the Fishery for lunch on Thursday! Who can miss that?!

Despite the danger and pain the storm caused, it leaves some beautiful sites to behold. Many people from our Photo Department took pictures. Here are a few of mine. Hope everyone is safe and warm today!

Ky Holiday Party

Jan 25, 2009 by Christina Y

Better known as the Zappos Winter Bash 2009!

I have been to three Zappos holiday parties since being with the company, and I have to say Thank you Zappos for the best KY holiday party yet! It was so cold outside, but way hot inside the Horseshoe Casino in Indiana. It was so much fun! I couldn't even begin to put into words how awesome it was! From the huge Ice bar to the beautiful decorations, the dancers, and all the in between...drinks!

Thank You!

Here is what a few of my co workers had to say about the party as well:

"I didn’t realize this until after I had left but the entire bar was made of Ice. Had it entirely melted, that would have been astonishing. I feel next party we should combine a sort of ice/glacier theme and get a live polar bear or at least Viking dancers--All in all, a great party and lots of fun!"--Jon B.

"As Juvenile banged 'Back That Thang Up' over the speakers, after the 4th shot of rum settled uneasily in my battleground of a stomach, before spilling my bourbon and coke on an innocent bystander, I had a thought… 'This is really fun'"-Kyle S.

“The Zappos party warmed my heart. Though it was a bitter cold night, the ever flowing tequila shots, Merlot, and puffs of ham and cheese brought a warmth over me that won’t be replaced until the next Zappos Holiday Party.”-Erin R.

What did you think of the holiday party?

Bags O' Bands!

Dec 26, 2008 by Angela T

Zappos photo department made the FC a bit cleaner and safer last week with a little friendly competition. Both A and B shifts challenged each other to see who could collect the most bands lying around that have come off the shoe boxes. These bands are found floating around everywhere and are very easily tangled and slipped on, it only takes a second to pick one up as you travel through the warehouse. The photo team members collected enough bands to fill two large trash bags in one week!!

Congrats to the winning team members!!!

Jingle Bells, Zappos sells, lots and lots of shoes!

The Photo department decided that we wanted to share some Christmas cheer last week. We decorated Christmas cards and delivered them to our fellow team members in other departments. Not only did we deliver cards but we delivered the sound of our BEAUTIFUL singing voices. YES we sang Christmas carols and it was AWESOME.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-4153-2884/carol.jpg

So maybe some of us don't have the best voices (like myself) but we rocked it! Our song list included Jingle Bells, Rudolph, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and Frosty the Snowman. We started our journey with HR and finished with picking. We received smiles and laughter, and I think we may have scared a few people! Happy Holidays Everyone!

Zappos Kentucky Holiday Ornament Program

Dec 17, 2008 by Christina Y

This holiday season Zappos teamed up with the Bullitt County Family Resource Centers to help some families holiday wishes come true! We put up a Christmas tree in the break room area and the first day with 60 ornaments on the tree. Each ornament contained the child's clothing size and two desired toys. Less than 24 hours later the tree was practically empty! Stefanie W.(Our awesome Super Solutions Supervisor) had to call the resource center for more wish lists!!

The Family Resource Centers are grant funded agencies within the school system that assists families with a variety of needs, as well as bring great programming opportunities to our students and families. The families served by the resource centers fall at or below the state's defined poverty level. Last year, over 600 children participated in the wish list programs in Bullitt County.

I'm very proud to say that Zappos employees helped 86 children have a great Christmas this year! Approximately 70 kids were helped by Zappos employees Directly! The remaining kids were taken care of by the money we raised from the sale of our left over fleece jackets!

The resource centers have expressed sincere gratitude towards Zappos employees for their assistance this year! With rough times, and just being the holiday season in general, it makes me so proud that so many employees participated in this program. Way to go Kentucky FC Employees!!

Thanks to Stefanie W. for helping with information for this blog.

Dodge Ball Daily @ 3pm

Nov 6, 2008 by Tammy L.

As a stress reliever from planning warehouse budgets, making purchases, hiring and handling all benefits paperwork, writing scripts to run site manager, and becoming friends with OSHA; the admin team wants to throw something!!!

They decided to start a friendly game of dodge ball, the all time favorite recess sport! Dodge ball is played daily at 3pm in the upstairs office. What a great work out and stress reliever! Kudos, my friends, and remember... safety first!

At Zappos.com, safety comes second to none and it is better to be safe than sorry. The team has created many rules to keep the game fair, friendly, and safe. They actually have too many rules now but they are still having FUN!

We are looking forward to next spring when the weather warms up. Maybe the game can be taken out side and more players can join in. Go Team!
