Zappos Monopoly is Coming!

May 8, 2008 by Graham M.

The Zappos Merchandising team is working with ZU to put together a Zappos.com Edition of Monopoly. 5000 custom Monopoly boards will be created by Parker Bros. featuring Zappos.com and our Core Values, and will feature properties "sponsored" by many of our top vendors! The proceeds from the property sponsorship and sales of board game set will benifit The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Special thanks to Andy H., Richard Z. and Mark G. for putting this together! We're almost there! More info to follow!

How’s that for an attention getter? Well, that’s the title of a new Zappos University inhouse seminar. It’s led by our ZU keepers and has been very popular. Topics on nutrition, beliefs, behaviors and motivation are covered.

I bet most of you, deep down anyway, know what foods are good for you and which ones.... not so much. Now I would also bet that most of you didn’t know that the frequency at which you eat a fixed amount of food can affect your weight. In other words, let’s say you have 2 pounds of your favorite healthy food packed up for one day’s worth of meals. If you eat all 2 pounds at one sitting, your body will actually react as if your food supply was uncertain and channel more of the food into your body’s fat reserves. If instead you ate the 2 pounds spread out over 5 meals, your body will react as if your food source is reliable and less fat will be created. Pretty clever, eh? Now, this does not mean you can just nibble on a 4 pound sack of candy all day long and expect minimal weight gain.

That’s Loren B. He is one of our new hire trainers and he is my hero and mentor. Why? Well he is our reigning Zappos Hot Dog eating Champion and Chile Cookoff champion but he is not our BBQ champion and that keeps him humble. So yes, he is a powerful eater, drinker, and all around nice and funny guy. He attended the seminar and also graciously consented to having his picture taken. <cough attention hound cough> Loren says stay tuned for more Gazelle tips from the ZU!

Up in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope, it's firmly on the ground. ZU stands for Zappos University but we're definitely having a lot of fun with the "Zoo" wordplay. Mark, our ZU Director is nicknamed the "ZU Keeper" and the entire team is also called the "ZU Crew."

About a week ago the ZU Crew assembled for their first ever group picture. It will be used in our new Employee Handbook which has a yearbook theme. I think the kids in the foreground are power napping. About a half hour earlier I saw them hammering away on the Dance Dance Revolution in the lobby. Missy had everything under control with our Easter recess visitors. The ZU crew will also be "shepherding" a yearbook for 2008. Yep, club and team pictures, a superlatives list (best/most likely to x, y, z), "letterhumans", a Prom Court, the whole 9 yards.

Now ZU also has a very serious purpose at Zappos. Our culture is not just about having a positive attitude. We know we also need the best possible training so we can develop and maintain top caliber skills. ZU will be rolling out 3 broad, overlapping initiatives soon:

PE - Professional Growth & Enrichment
O&A - Outreach & Assessment
Life Styles – Personal Growth & Enrichment

One of the first classes will be the inaugural session of “ZULE” which stands for Zappos University Leadership Essentials. It will be in the PE category and the first class will have many of our senior managers.
The feedback they give will be incorporated for following classes. We’ll let you know how it goes!
