Fulfillment Center Confessions

Nov 5, 2009 by Pat W

As a former Warehouse worker, and the son of a Warehouse worker, there are many things you come to expect when working in a Distribution or Fulfillment Center. One of those is not free lunch everyday, and heated and temperature controlled work areas are also not considered common. Zappos FC (Fulfillment Center) team members tell us what they feel sets Zappos.com apart from previous employers and work environments.

Thank you to our comrades in Kentucky for all you do to keep Zappos running smoothly and efficiently!

Also, special thanks to our KY Content video team for producing this awesome video!

The Blogs team is responsible for putting content on the blogs page, but that's not all we do. We are actually known internally as the A/V or "Audio Visual Club" We film product knowledge seminars for our CLT counterparts, as well as create videos for the presentations of our fellow Zapponians. Recently, we were asked by Craig A, our VP of Services and Operations to produce an updated video of our FC to show in the front lobby of our Henderson, NV office. We were happy to do so, and we hope everyone enjoys the new video.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, The Zappos.com Fulfillment Center!

Kentucky Warehouse Rubberband Ball

A few years ago we were looking for a solution to keep shoe box lids from falling off of their Boxes, and we found that Rubberbands were inexpensive, reusable and quite effective. However, we did run into a problem when we moved to our new Fulfillment center. Our Director of Fulfillment Operations Anthony V. tells us "the rest of the story".

The Kiva robots in our Kentucky Fulfillment center aspire to be Kentucky Derby winners, and also have very unique names. The 70 employees in Kentucky with the longest length of service were given the honor of selecting names for all 70 of the Kiva Robots that we house in our Shepherdsville Facility.

1st Annual KY Wow Awards!

It was last quarter of 2008 and we were in need of some good old-fashioned morale boosting. The photo studios were quiet, the fun was at a standstill, and the core values were on the back burner of everyone's minds. We knew that the team members thought the world of each other but they just weren't really saying how much they genuinely care or how working with them made their days better.

What we really wanted to know is: If they had to put a core value with the way they felt about their team members, what core value would it be?

So, Betsy D. (Photo Operations Manager) and I decided to host "The WOW Awards." We set out a ballot box with voting ballots (designed by Jon B., Senior Image Coordinator) next to it. On the voting ballot, they were to write the team members name and the Core Value that they exemplify. It was completely anonymous. After 3 months of open voting, we collected the ballots and had 10 WOW Award winners for each Core Value. We hosted an Awards ceremony with handmade trophies for each Core Value and a certificate (designed by Kyle S., Senior Image Coordinator) to hand out to all WOW Award winners.

All the ballots were placed up on the Photo Studio wall by Katie B. (Senior Photographer) so that all the ballots could be read by everyone. Everyone brought appetizers and hors d'oeuvres as well as games to play. We even had a room set up with an X-box, which was a big hit. Here is Matt W. (Senior Photo Assistant) happily accepting his WOW Award for Core Value #8, Do More With Less. His trophy was decked out in 8-track tapes, a Fisher Price camera, and other miniature items, like dollar bills. Thanks to everyone for voting! We look forward to our 2nd WOW Awards so get out there and vote!
