Maternity Style: Casual Wardrobe Picks for the Third Trimester

Oct 14, 2009 by Sabah K.

You may long to wear muumuus and oversized sweaters during the last few months of pregnancy, but you don't have to compromise fashion and style just to be comfortable. The last trimester can be one of the most challenging to dress comfortably in, but there are some key pieces you can add to your wardrobe that will make you look chic, stylish and super comfortable. Here are your best picks for the casual wardrobe during the third trimester:

The Leggings and Tunic Combo
A pair of stretchy leggings in black or brown paired with a printed tunic are a great fit for the mom-to-be during the last trimester. Look for leggings from the maternity department instead of going a few sizes up on regular styles for the most flattering silhouette. The sky's the limit when it comes to tunic tops and stick with bold printed designs and v-neck or scoop neck cuts to make the most of this look.

The Flowing Summer Dress
A loose, flowing summer dress is perfect for the last trimester of pregnancy because it not only helps you stay cool, but is also flattering to your growing figure. Stick with dresses that have empire waistlines and wide straps so that you can stay plenty comfortable all day long.

The Long Black Skirt
A long black skirt is an important staple for your maternity wardrobe, and is a great choice for special occasions and events that demand a little dressing up. Stick with a skirt made with stretchy material and a modest slit to create the most attractive silhouette.

Bootcut Pants
Bootcut pants and not flare leg or skinny jean types are the best match for you during your last trimester, and are a staple for weekend errand-running and casual days at home. Look for a pair of bootcut pants made with either a stretch or lightweight linen material for the ultimate fit. Just make sure it's from the maternity department so you're not struggling with the waistband.

The Button Down Shirt
Whether you're gardening or shopping for groceries, a well-fitting button down shirt is a great match for casual days during the third trimester. Look for stretch cotton blends that will accommodate for your baby bump, and consider wearing a tank or tunic top underneath for some extra support.

Maternity Style: Tips for Choosing the Right Maternity Jeans

Sep 25, 2009 by Sabah K.

Maternity jeans are designed with an adjustable waistband and stretch material to accommodate for your growing baby bump and steady weight gain. However, that doesn't mean you have to stick with the 'mommy jeans' style (unless that's your preferred style) throughout your term.

When you're selecting maternity jeans, the first thing you need to decide is what type of wash is fit for the season. Keep in mind that you will probably only be wearing a new pair of maternity jeans for about three to four months, so you won't be able to wear the same color through every season. Stick with the lighter blue wash jeans during the late Spring and summer, and the darker blue or grey washes in the Fall and winter months.

Another important factor in finding the perfect maternity jean is hem length. For the most flattering fit, the cuffs of the jeans should rest at the top of your foot when wearing shoes; your feet should almost disappear without shoes on. This length creates the effect of longer, slimmer legs, and will elongate your figure from head to toe no matter how much weight you've put on during pregnancy.

Make sure that the waistband size you select truly fits you. Many moms-to-be make the mistake of purchasing one size too small to avoid worrying about jeans that keep sliding down, but you will need to pick a size that leaves you with about an inch of space in front. You can always wear a light belt if you fear slippage, but you're likely to grow into these jeans in a few short weeks.

Finally, make sure you select a style that complements the tops you will be wearing through your term. If you plan on wearing lots of tunic tops, you'll need a slimmer-fitting style so you don't disappear under your clothes. If you plan on wearing fitted, wrap-style tops, your best bet is a flare leg or bootleg style that enhances your curves.

Today's maternity fashion designers are incorporating many standard styles such as bootleg cuts, wide leg and even skinny jeans into the denim lineup for pregnant moms, so you can show off your stylish and fashionable self even when you're pregnant!

Maternity Style: Pulling Off Polished and Professional During Pregnancy

Sep 16, 2009 by Sabah K.

When you're in your second or third trimester, finding comfortable clothes can be one of the biggest challenges of being pregnant. Your growing baby bump and a few additional pounds can make it hard to find flattering clothes, and if you need to dress in business-casual or business-professional clothing during your pregnancy days, your choices may seem limited. Still, there are several ways to pull off a polished and professional look during pregnancy. All you need to do is focus on finding comfortable basic pieces, and then accessorizing with some of the latest trends.

The first must have for any office-going mom-to-be is a versatile pair of black pants. Black maternity pants can be matched with almost any type of top and will exude that professional and chic touch you need for the office. Stick with the black pants or trousers with an expandable waist so you don't have to worry about having your clothing tailored every month.

Another essential for the office is a cardigan or vest that fits you properly. Make sure your cover-up is designed for the pregnant mom so there's plenty of room for your baby bump. Avoid materials that are too clingy or ¾ sleeve cuts, because these can make you look much larger than you are. Stick with loose-fitting cardigans and tops that tend to drape rather than cinch at the waist.

A great way to look more pulled-together with any outfit is to accessorize properly. You can draw attention to your neck and face by wearing attractive, eye-catching jewelry with a square-neckline top and your hair pulled up so that the baby bump isn't the center of attention. A bright-colored scarf tied around your neck can also have the same effect. Just make sure that you're complying with the company dress code.

Finally, the right pair of shoes will finish up your polished ensemble for the office. When you're pregnant, it's especially important to wear shoes that fit you properly and select a pair that is made with expandable, breathable materials. Look for super-soft leathers and stick with the kitten heel so you're not putting too much pressure on your calves and legs during the day. A kitten heel is great for the office and will help you create that chic and stylish look you need.

Maternity Style: Essentials for Staying Stylish Throughout Pregnancy

Aug 19, 2009 by Sabah K.

Staying stylish and fashionable throughout a pregnancy often takes a backseat for many moms-to-be, simply because they're dealing with so many changes, higher stress levels, and juggling a busy schedule. However, you don't have to turn into a fashion victim just because you're expecting. Some careful shopping decisions and building up a basics wardrobe can help you get through those nine months staying chic and stylish. Here are some essential fashion tips for staying stylish during every trimester:

1. Stick with soft and natural fabrics. From organic cotton to light wool blends, stick with the soft fabrics that won't irritate your skin, and designs that aren't too form-fitting. These will put you at ease throughout your days of pregnancy, and a few bold colors and fun prints will help you stay fashionable.

2. Buy your actual size from the maternity department. Many women make the mistake of buying clothes from the regular Misses or Women's department, and just going a few sizes bigger. Your growing figure won't benefit from the extra material, and you'll end up hiding beneath a tent in most cases! Head to the maternity department so that you're buying your usual dress size designed with some minor tweaks.

3. Avoid the empire waist until your second trimester. Contrary to popular belief, the empire waistline will accentuate the tummy area so it won't be flattering to your figure until you're ready to flaunt the baby bump. Stick with loose and flowing styles that elongate your figure and accentuate your natural waistline during your first trimester, then shift over to empire lines as the baby bump begins to show.

4. Buy a maternity bra for overnight use. If you're large-chested, you will need some extra support overnight. Purchase a maternity bra that you can comfortably wear overnight so you can look forward to a restful night throughout your term.

5. Build up your bottoms basics. Jeans, tailored black pants and a simple skirt are three basics you need to get through your pregnancy days. Make sure they're from the maternity department so you have the flexibility of an adjustable waist.

Staying stylish throughout your pregnancy may not be at the top of your priority list, but building your wardrobe doesn't have to be an overwhelming process. Stick with these essential fashion 'dos' so you can be chic and fashionable through every trimester!

Maternity Style: Catch the Bohemian Wave

Jun 10, 2009 by Sabah K.

One of summer's hottest trends is the boho chic look, a mix of gypsy-inspired pieces with splashes of rich colors from the Far East. The bohemian look is here to stay for another season, and moms-to-be are great candidates for sporting this fresh, fun and sassy look during any trimester. You can enjoy the relaxed, carefree look with loose, flowing peasant tops, ruffled blouses and eclectic prints from the Far East. Here are some tips for catching the Bohemian wave this season so you can freshen up your pregnancy wardrobe:

1. Sport a loose-fitting floral dress. As temperatures rise and you want to sport a laid back and casual look, go for a flowy, floral or tropical-print dress that provides plenty of coverage but is high on comfort. Floral-printed dresses in deep purple, orange, brown and earthy tones are the perfect color palette for your bohemian look. Wear this with some comfy flats and you'll be plenty comfortable during those hot days ahead.

2. Play with dolman sleeves. Dolman sleeves are perfect for the mom-to-be, because this style is very loose around the waist and covers up the arms and shoulders with its drapy style. If you're feeling bloated and uncomfortable, this is the top for you. Pick yours out in a paisley print or earthy tone for a casual, versatile look.

3. Relax in distressed denim. Jeans don't have to be your enemy when you're pregnant, and a pair of bootcut, wide-leg distressed denim jeans or crop pants are a great fit for your bohemian chic ensemble. You can easily pair these up with any flutter blouse or tank top; just look for a style with an expandable waistline if you want to wear it throughout the season.

For accessories, pick up some chunky bracelets, bold necklaces and ethnic-print hair scarves to instantly transform your wardrobe. You can also try a textured hairband or chandelier earrings to freshen up your look. Big and bold accessories can add a fun and playful twist to any ensemble, and work especially well as a contrast to neutral-colored pieces.

So go ahead; show off your playful side and stay comfortable and cool with a few bohemian chic essentials this season!

Maternity Tips: Finding Your Cozy Maternity Style

May 20, 2009 by Rebecca White-Glanders

I know, I know . . . it seems like the words "maternity" and "style" don't belong in the same sentence. Not long ago, that may have been true: as little as eight years ago, most of my maternity options involved tent-like dresses and shirts with (ugh) bows! Fortunately, today's selection of maternity wear is as unique and stylish as the women who wear it. And best of all, most of it is made in comfortable, stretchy fabrics that flatter the pregnant body and are nearly cozy enough to sleep in (I did it, I admit it). The key to maternity wardrobe bliss is finding maternity clothes that are affordable in the real world. Pregnant celebrities always look great - after all, if you can afford to pay hundreds of dollars for a piece of clothing, you can find just about anything. Here are some great ideas for affordable maternity fashion you can get today.

The perfect maternity pants are the foundation for any maternity wardrobe. It's a good idea to buy 2 or 3 pairs of maternity bottoms in basic colors, then mix or match them with tops as your outfit requires. The most popular type are black yoga-style maternity pants or capris. A pair of brown or tan linen maternity pants also makes a great addition to your pregnancy wardrobe. And finally, a great black maternity top is a must! You can dress it up for church or social functions, or dress it down with flip-flops and a comfortable tee. You can even wear it during that in-between post-baby phase before you can squeeze back into your jeans!

When it comes to maternity tops, the sky is the limit! Kimono-style maternity tops come in every shade and pattern imaginable. Button-down maternity work tops are no longer tent-like and blasé. Instead, they tend to be embellished with center twists, beading or other interesting accents. Regardless of what type of top suits your style, you can likely find it in today's maternity fashions.

It's good to know that pregnant women can throw away their oversized t-shirts and sweatpants, and find something that fits their pre-pregnancy styles. After all, pregnancy doesn't sap you of your pre-pregnancy personality. It gives you an opportunity to discover a whole new you.

Maternity Tips: Make Your Pregnancy Easier with Wardrobe Basics

Feb 13, 2009 by Kelly H.

Though pregnancy is an exciting and happy time in a woman's life, it still has its own fair share of ups and downs. From swollen feet to an ever expanding belly (and likely the rest of your body, too), getting comfortable may be one of the most difficult parts of your pregnancy.

Thankfully, clothing designers have realized that maternity clothing can be stylish, fashionable and improve your comfort level during pregnancy. By filling your wardrobe with a few maternity clothing basics, you'll help make your entire pregnancy a bit easier. By starting with your undergarments, you can assure that you get the support and comfort that you need where it counts the most -- close to your skin.

Start with the basics when selecting your pregnancy wardrobe. Purchase maternity underpants and bras, like the Nummies and Belabumbum lines. Nummies bras are also designed to serve as nursing bras, so it won't go to waste after delivery. If you need to purchase larger bras and underpants early in your pregnancy, consider leaving a bit of room to grow. You'll appreciate it when your third trimester is in full swing. Belabumbum also makes maternity swimwear -- a must if you'll be out in the sun during your pregnancy.

Add a belly wrap to your maternity wardrobe, too. Not only are these fashionable, but belly wraps, like those designed by bao bei, also offer increased belly support. For moms-to-be toward the end of their pregnancy or for women suffering from back pain during pregnancy, belly wraps can prove to be an invaluable addition to your wardrobe. Plus, they prevent unwanted belly exposure when your shirt shifts out of place.

Once you've got the basics of a maternity wardrobe in your closet, you'll be ready to make the move and expand your collection to pants, shirts, dresses and comfortable shoes suited for pregnancy. Dressing right can help make pregnancy comfortable and easy from the start.
