Saving Money in the Kitchen: Halloween Makeup

Oct 26, 2009 by Amy B.

Halloween makeup is not only expensive, but it can be a problem for people with allergies as well. While you can get creative with regular makeup that's hypoallergenic, there are more creative ways to make Halloween makeup. Believe it or not, you can save money on Halloween makeup by turning to your kitchen and be health conscious at the same time.

First of all, instead of using harsh dyes on your hair, why not use Kool-Aid? Kool-Aid comes in a large variety of colors, but you must use caution. Kool-Aid powder can be mixed with conditioner and applied to the hair, left to set for 10-15 minutes, and rinsed out. It's best to do this right before heading out and then wash the Kool-Aid out as soon as you get home. Otherwise, you could end up with blue hair for a couple weeks to a couple months.

What if you want to add a bit of texture to your face, such as icky scabs? You can create this look by using a paste made with oatmeal, corn syrup, and food coloring. If you want a variation of color, it's best to mix oatmeal and enough corn syrup to create the desired texture and then apply it to the area. Then use a paint brush and food coloring to add a variation of shades. For example, there might a bright pink around the scab because it's infected. The center of the scab would be dark red which would resemble dried blood. If you wanted to get really gross, you could mix corn syrup with green food coloring to create a nasty looking infection on the scab.

Of course, one of the most important pieces of Halloween makeup is fake blood. Because this type of Halloween makeup is often used so close to the mouth, it's important to use non-toxic ingredients. Here's a recipe to get you started that is perfect for little kids who want to celebrate Halloween.

Fake Halloween Blood

1 cup of light corn syrup
¼ cup flour
Red food coloring

1. Mix the light corn syrup and enough flour to crate a thick blood texture.
2. Add enough food coloring to get the desired color of blood.
3. Place inside a squeeze bottle of easy application.

Football season has finally arrived and with it comes big football parties. While you can order pizza, or even pick up large subs, it's much more affordable to make food at home. If you have an open kitchen, you can even get your guests involved. This week, let's talk about saving money in the kitchen, while still preparing awesome food for your football parties.

First of all, take advantage of the great deals at super department stores. These stores have awesome deals on chips, dips, drinks and frozen appetizers. This is a great way to get a big bang for your buck. Of course, while you're there you can also shop for items to prepare delicious meals at home.

There are so many dishes you can make for your football party. Some of the most popular choices include chili, pizza, sandwiches, hot dogs and nachos. No one ever said these popular foods had to be done in the same old way. There are many different ways to kick up everyday football party foods. For example, why not combine the flavors of hot wings and nachos to create a whole new dish?

Buffalo Nachos

1 large bag of yellow corn tortilla chips
1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 bottle of hot wing sauce
1 bottle of queso cheese sauce

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and heat the tortilla chips until they start to brown, around 10 -15 minutes, and place on a large platter.
2. Cut the chicken breasts into bite sized pieces and brown until cooked through.
3. Toss the chicken with the hot wing sauce and pour over the tortilla chips.
4. Heat the queso cheese sauce and pour over the chicken and chips.
5. Serve immediately.

Who said football party food had to be expensive or boring? Take your favorite football foods and make them at home in new ways. Your guests will love the new flavor combinations and you'll love the savings.

Saving Money in the Kitchen: For Sale By Owner

Listing your home as for sale by owner means that you can save a lot of money. Of course, you should still have an open house to bring interested parties to the home. Listing an ad in your local paper promising free drinks and appetizers is another great way to bring more people to the open house. Unfortunately, paying for catering can be quite expensive. Thankfully, there are ways to save money in your kitchen while preparing for an open house.

The number one thing to remember when preparing food for an open house is to keep it simple. It takes time to get ready for an open house. You have to clean the house, put out the signs, and make sure the home looks its absolute best. If you try to prepare dishes that are time consuming, you'll have to invest even more time in cleaning.

A great way to save money and time is to prepare store bought cookie dough. Not only is it easy to make, the cleanup is easy as well, if you use aluminum foil. Also, fresh baked cookies give a home an inviting smell, which makes the home more appealing to buyers. You could also choose to bake cinnamon rolls or bread. Just make sure the aroma is one that homebuyers will find inviting.

When it comes to appetizers, the freezer aisle can be your best friend. There are a number of high quality appetizers to choose from and the prices are much more affordable than catering. Just make sure the appetizer is easy to eat and not messy.

Of course, if you want a homemade appetizer, you can't go wrong with this recipe:

Gorgonzola and Prochuto Pears with Warm Honey Dipping Sauce
20 pears, cut into six wedges each
1 pound of gorgonzola, cut into thin slices
1 pound of prochuto, cut into strips
2 cups of honey
2 tablespoons orange zest

1. Take a slice of pear and a slice of gorgonzola and wrap them in a piece of prochuto.
2. Combine the honey and orange zest and microwave for 1-2 minutes or until hot.
3. Place the dipping sauce in the middle of a large platter surrounded by the pears.

Saving Money in the Kitchen: Rib Eye Steaks

Aug 3, 2009 by Amy B.

Do you love taking your friends and family out for a steak dinner on special occasions? What if I told you, that you could *serve your friends and family a delicious steak dinner for a fraction of what a steakhouse would charge*? It's all about saving money in the kitchen and this week we're tackling the classic steak dinner. Most steak dinners come with a salad, bread, and a choice of potato. While a steak dinner can range from $9.99 to a few hundred dollars, depending on the type of steak and restaurant, you can prepare the same delicious meals for under $50 for four people. Talk about huge savings!

First of all, don't overdo the salad. A salad that comes with a steak dinner should be simple. Purchase a large bag of salad mix and a couple different types of salad dressing and you're done. As for bread, shop your grocery store's bakery for inexpensive, but homemade tasting choices. And, for the best savings on potatoes, go with French fries. That way, you don't have to buy toppings.

As for the steak, because you're cooking at home, you can afford to serve your guests high quality cuts of meat. For around $20, you could serve your guests half pound rib eye steaks. If you wanted to serve sirloin, the cost would be around $10. Now, time for the weekly recipe:

Easy Rib Eye Steaks
Serves 4

4 (8 ounce) rib eye steaks
Fresh cracked pepper, to taste
Sea salt, to taste
Garlic powder, to taste
Olive oil

1. Season the steaks on both sides and place in a large, oven-safe skillet with enough olive oil to coat the bottom of the skillet and brown on both sides before transferring to the oven.
2. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes.
3. Remove the steaks and serve immediately for medium well or cover and let sit for 15 minutes for well done steaks.

Last, but not least, top your delicious steak dinner off with a special dessert from your local bakery. It's really that simple and that inexpensive. Stop waiting for special occasions and have your friends over for a delicious meal tonight.
