Breadcrumbs on Product Pages

One of our biggest focuses this year is improving the findability and browseability of our site. With breadcrumb navigation links on the product page, we're re-introducing a navigation tool we had on our site for many years until we moved to the new Zeta* site a few years back. The basic idea is that when you hit a product page you'll have hierarchical navigation links to allow you to "back out" into broader related searches and categories. This is especially useful if the product page is the first page on your visit to Zappos and you would like to view the higher level category or brand that this product is part of.

Here's some screenshots and photos showing our breadcrumbs in action.

Breadcrumb Navigation

As you can see you'll now have a hierarchical view of how the product is classified with links to those departments. This also includes a link to the brand page of the product and the product name.

Stacey and Dave

Stacey Eddy, Sr User Experience Architect and Dave Stevens, Front-End Developer, who both worked on this project are spotted here doting on the feature like proud parents.

Let us know what you think!

* Zappos terminology for "beta". Also, the Zeta site hasn't been in beta for a while now but internally we still call it that.

Breadcrumbs are nice but they disappear after you complete the survey. The survey site needs a link to get you back to shopping!

Hi Kathy,

We'll take the feedback about having a "back to shopping" link and explore our options. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

Regarding the disappearing breadcrumbs, would you mind going into more detail as to the issue you're experiencing? We're not 100% sure what you're describing. Thanks

This is nice. So are the videos which I just discovered that show people actually wearing the shoes. But I have a suggestion / request. Is it possible to show the shoes with either a dress or by pulling the pants legs up to show the full shoe? Most have the people wearing long pants that cover a lot of the shoe and it is hard to tell what the top looks like and how they might look with a skirt.

I love your site and your company!

Every time I click on a breadcrumb it just takes me to this blog post about breadcrumbs. *boggle*

The breadcrumbs are to the left of the circled area. If you click on the circled area, it will bring you here. The breadcrumbs are the broken categories that display the taxonomy of the product you are viewing. Let us know if you have any trouble!
