NavWow Multi-select

Since the original launch of NavWow (faceted search navigation), one of the biggest requests from customers has been the ability to select multiple search facets at the same time. In the next couple of weeks we'll be launching that multi-select ability in NavWow. It'll be exposed only to a randomly selected subset of customers and you might find yourself seeing it (if you followed the link from a search to this blog post, you're likely in that test! Congrats!). Lots of work has been put into this by our cross functional search team.

Here's Dylan Bathurst explaining NavWow:

We have more changes planned in the next few months but we think this is a great start. We're looking forward to your feedback!

How can I say "no" to an option? For example, I'd like to see Black Sandals which are Platform, but I don't want any thongs or flipflops. How can I see all of the sandals EXCEPT for the thongs? Thanks! I like the ability to see black or white shoes at one time.

Exactly---I am looking for a specific watch in mind:

"Women’s > diver > alarms (prefer combo audible and vibrating--esp. during dives) > chrono / stop watch > solar and or ECO drive > depth at least 200M > screw down crown with o-rings and case back > perpetual calendar > UNI (or BI-directional) rotating ratcheted bezel > and ability to change-out bands easily (for dives, prefer screw band to case, so I don’t get it caught on something, and the rubber/resin rots easily, but I would like a Stainless Steel expansion that I can change it to when on the casual fly about town."

Since I have too many parameters, I usually have none resulted at the end of my search, so "searching" for me is tough and I usually have to sacrifice the extras for the basics. Maybe you could refine this. Give us the option of "Control + x-y-z" to select many items because it kicks the grid back up to the top and I have to scroll down the keep finding where I left off at.

Thanks, Cathy

I've had A LOT of people ask for this feature. It seems that when you give people the ability to mult-select, the entire way they use search changes. And now there is a big need for being able to choose what you don't want when you don't exactly know what you do want.

Fear not! I am definitely working on a good solution for this. One of the main problems I'm having right now is that the URL in the address bar would be absolutely HUGE if we implemented this feature right now. If you included every brand except for say, Nike. There would be a URL with every other brand in the list separated by an "OR".

We have a couple things coming down the pipe so they should be out pretty soon. Thank you so much for your feedback!

@CatherineD58220

Wow you really know what you want! I can see why you're having problems when you get jumped back up to the top of the page. With the new multi-select feature I tried to make it so that when you select a multi-select facet (ie. color, size, brand, width, etc.) the page doesn't jump you up to the top and no new facets come onto the page. Only when you select a top level category such as gender, product type, category, then facets with be removed from the page and new ones will come in. This also jumps the user to the top of the page.

I've been coding a proof of concept where the left side facets, breadcrumbs, sorting links and result count always stay on the page. Even when you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page. Those options are still there for the user to click. Right now it's still just a proof of concept, but hopefully this along the lines of what you were suggesting.

Thanks for the feedback and keep and eye on the site for these feature upgrades!

Great feature - would there be value to add a feature that might show "sale, discontinue" or "end of run" products similar to the target buyer's habits of "THAT" user? Am I say this right? :-)

You have great people who work for this company!! I really don't think you don't listen to what US,THE CONSUMERS ASK FOR: I have asked for women's size help/charts so many times!! What do I see as I search your site-4 videos on how to tie knots!! Women are your biggest consumers of your products-why should I have to go to live chat just to browse through dresses for example-I think if you are going to sell women's apparel-ask your female employees what they think about my idea of giving us basic size info/help otherwise I will continue to keep ONLY BUYING SHOES FROM YOU:(

@ Kathleen: Thanks for your input on sizing. A universal sizing chart has been an ongoing challenge for our Zappos Development team as every brand has different sizing conversions.

That being said, they are in the process of providing brand-specific size charts for clothing in the product descriptions to help eliminate some confusion.

We appreciate your business and your input, and as always, we have free return shipping if you ever purchase clothing and have to return due to size issues.

Thanks!

Maybe you have this, but I don't see where in searching I can indicate heel height and/or color of soles so that I can safely wear the light-color-soled shoes just as "inside" (our house)shoes.

I'm late to the party b/c I just noticed the filters have multiple-selections now, but I'm SUPER excited about it. Is it sad that something like that excites me? Who cares!

I love, love, love the NavWow feature! I have been anticipating this search capability for awhile now. It took a minute to realize that once a selection is clicked, the rendering is instantaneous and the left navigation bar changes accordingly. I wanted to execute a search for black and brown boots. I selected black and moved the mouse to select brown but in that split second, the screen changed and I unintentionally selected an option in the bottom blue standard options.

A recommendation for Release 2 would be to somehow make the left nav bar static and only change the items... like a split screen.

But I love this! Thanks for listening.

I'd love to have inseam length be part of the filtering scheme. I know it appears eventually, but after I've made more choices than I'd prefer. I know sizing is very touch-and-go, so I can appreciate the effort to standardize across brands and not make the interaction too complex. (I work in interaction design too, so I know what a drag this can be.) Anyway, good work and I look forward to updates and improvements!

We have some features the site to show you those kinds of items. You'll notice on the search pages that some of the items have a blue or orange "flag" image on the top of them that denotes the item is either on sale or is new.

As far as recommendations, across the site you'll see product that will have a green heading bar above it saying something like "Shopping recommendations for you". We have a system in place to recommend products to you based on how you've browsed in the past.

Hope this helps!

We do have a facet that will let you select heel hight! http://www.zappos.com/women-shoes/CK_XAcABAeICAgEY.zso If you go to that page and scroll down you'll see a facet on the left-hand side of the screen that says "HEEL HEIGHT".

As for sole color, there is currently no way to search for a specific sole color, but you can always click the item to zoom into that items page. Then if you click on the image thumbnail you can see the multi-view. This will show you the underside of shoe.

Thanks Anita for the feedback. I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm racking my brain trying to find a good solution for this problem. I really want to keep the interface as fast as possible and not try to put unnecessary animations or loading screens into the user interface. On the other hand, you're definitely correct that this is problem. I'll be tackling this problem in the next version.

Thanks so much for your feedback!

I have been admiring the new nav and also looking at some other sites. If I understand the problem that Anita described, I think ravelry.com has it solved. Essentially the left nav doesn't change until the user closes the selection (besides the number of items displayed), so that the user can make multiple selection, yet the items listed on the right are reflected immediately.
