ReCommerce Hack Day

hackers,Zappos API,Zappos IP Inc.,zappos technology,FEZ team,Zappos San Francisco team,recommerce hack day,hackathon

A few of us here at Zappos (including members of the API, San Francisco, and FEZ teams) are currently in the works of hosting the first ReCommerce Hack Day on September 16-17, 2011. We're excited to see developers reinvent e-commerce and create some mind-blowing vertical retail experiences. It will be held in sunny Sinicon Valley (aka Las Vegas), and we invite you to come and join our growing tech community!

We'll be providing prizes for Best Overall Application, Most Fun & Weird, and Best Mashup in line with the retail hackathon theme. You don't have to use any specific API for these prizes – choose whichever strike your fancy and figure out how to WOW us!  Additionally, our sponsor partners will be providing prizes for the best use of their specific APIs as well. (If you're interested in sponsorship, please reach out to us at api@zappos.com!)

On Friday night, we'll keep it casual - start out with a few presentations from our partners to hear all about their cool APIs, then we bring out the beer! This is your time to mingle with other hackers and to figure out who you want to work with along with which APIs to use. On Saturday morning, you'll wake up early, drink lots of water to cure your hangover, then start hacking away! We'll be providing food and drinks to keep your energy levels up.

Full details on the schedule and registration can be found on http://recommerceday.com. We're looking for developers, hackathoners, students, retailers, and good ol' API-lovers to join in on the madness! Hope to see you there!

Bon voyage and happy shopping!

NavWow Multi-select

Since the original launch of NavWow (faceted search navigation), one of the biggest requests from customers has been the ability to select multiple search facets at the same time. In the next couple of weeks we'll be launching that multi-select ability in NavWow. It'll be exposed only to a randomly selected subset of customers and you might find yourself seeing it (if you followed the link from a search to this blog post, you're likely in that test! Congrats!). Lots of work has been put into this by our cross functional search team.

Here's Dylan Bathurst explaining NavWow:

We have more changes planned in the next few months but we think this is a great start. We're looking forward to your feedback!

Play-on-hover videos!

A small enhancement to our images on some landing pages was rolled out quietly a few weeks ago. On some of our larger images if you move your mouse over the image, the seemingly still image will start to play a video. Laurie Williams, the video product manager, and Daniel Lopez, a front-end developer, we're involved in this project and we hope they wow'ed you with this feature.

See it in action on this video:

Here's Daniel with the feature that can be seen on Zappos.com/rideshop

We've got Videos!

We've got videos! In fact we have over 50,000 product videos and continuing to shoot more. We've always had them but we've made it even more obvious that we do and made it even easier for you to access them. For products that currently have a video description on them, we've identified by a small play icon in the top corner of the product image. If you click the icon, it'll popup to the playing video but you can also access the typical multiview still shots of the product.
We create these short videos using real Zappos employees as models to give you an up close and personal look at our shoes, clothes and bags. If you haven't checked one out, you can see a typical example here:
