Fall Festival of the Week: The Georgia Apple Festival in Outdoor

Nov 17, 2009 by Lee S.

Want a fall festival you can really sink your teeth into? Then head south to the Georgia Apple Festival, held each October in the town of Ellijay in Gilmer County.

The festival is a paean to apples, with the football field arranged into streets with names like Granny Smith, Red Delicious and Jonagold. Everything apple can be found at this festival. And what's more American that apple pie? Maybe apple fritters!

The whole apple thing started in the early 1900s, when farmers in Gilmer County planted some apple trees. In 1922, the county's main crop, cotton, was attacked by the insect that nearly destroyed the south's economy - the boll weevil. But by 1922, Gilmer County was producing enough apples to help keep the county's economy from collapse, and the focus of their farming turned to apple orchards.

The festival offers a play area for children, with inflatable rooms filled with soft cushy balls, a climbing wall for older kids and teens, craftsmen of all kinds, and musical acts that include country, Gospel, and rock and roll. And don't forget the apples. You'll find apple fritters, fried apple pies, caramel apples, and more to eat, and apple dolls and apple art to buy.

The Georgia Apple Festival started in 1970, when local growers planned a fair to honor the fruit that saved the county. It's grown astronomically since then, so go early and be prepared to walk a long way along the apple-named "streets." Wear a cute pair of walking shoes like these darling Vianas from Tsubo to keep your tootsies comfy, and be environmentally conscious while you're doing your shopping -- bring along this Harvest Bag tote from Keen, made completely of recycled brown and white bags that would otherwise be in landfills, and big enough to hold all your purchases!

Even in Georgia, October evenings can be chilly, so bring a light jacket like this one from Patagonia, that combines classic fleece inside and out, with a wind-stopping layer sandwiched between. Enjoy the crisp air as you bite into a crisp apple or a warm fried pie, and you may never want to go home!

Most Posh Hotels/Spas in the World: A Trip to Venice in Vegas in Fashion Culture

Nov 17, 2009 by E.A. Anne

Las Vegas, Nevada is not a place frequently thought of by tourists who simply want to kick their feet up, relax, and rejuvenate. More likely, Vegas is thought of as a party-lover's paradise, with slamming clubs, bars, lounges, gambling, shows, and rides. Vegas, at least the Vegas strip, is often thought of as a city that never sleeps. However, if combining a vacation of partying hard and relaxing easy sounds perfect to you, a luxurious hotel in the middle of the chaos could be just what the doctor ordered.

The Venetian Resort and Hotel Casino is like a city of its own within the Vegas strip. Stepping into the Venetian transports you into a whole different world-- the world of romantic Venice, a city on the east coast of Italy. What makes the Venetian a city of its own? For starters, the Venetian contains a whopping 19 restaurants! These restaurants feature some of the most famous chefs, from Wolfgang Puck to Emeril Lagasse. The Venetian also houses the Grand Canal Shoppes, a massive collection of the best and most prestigious designers in the world. At the Venetian you can enjoy a lovely gondola ride down the reconstructed Grand Canal, an experience which really feels authentically Italian. All this, not to mention a huge casino packed with all of your favorite games and adventures. For all this gambling fun, you're not going to want to carry around your old and beat up wallet, but a new soft leather checkbook clutch.

The Venetian also houses the Canyon Ranch SpaClub, a gorgeously outfitted center for relaxation. There you can opt for a massage, a facial and a host of other luxurious spa treatments. Or if physical activity is what you want, go ahead and try their 40 foot rock climbing wall, a group fitness class or just a calm swim in the pool.

If you thought the Venetian could not get any grander, just wait until you step inside one of their sparkling suites. The Venetian offers a whole range of suites to fit all tastes, but my personal favorite is the Venezia Terrazzo Suite, with its 100 square foot private terrace and 130 square foot decadent bathroom. It won't get any better than this!

Yoga/Meditation Technique of the Week: The Cobra Pose in Health and Fitness

Nov 17, 2009 by E.A. Anne

One of my personal favorite yoga poses is the Cobra pose – and all of you who have tried it probably know why. The Cobra pose has to be one of the most relaxing poses involving upper body stretching that I have ever indulged in. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a go.

Lying on your stomach, slowly straighten your arms until your torso reaches as far back as is comfortable for you. Keep your thighs, legs and arms engaged as you stretch backwards, not forgetting to breathe deeply throughout the length of the pose. Remember that while doing the Cobra you should concentrate on lifting your chest as you stretch back-- so don't arch your back, but lift your chest upwards. Keep your arms slightly bent, taking care not to lock your elbows tight.

Hold the pose for about 20 seconds, then retract back down to your mat. When you feel ready, go ahead and enter into the pose again, this time challenging yourself even further. See if you can deepen the stretch by reaching your chest higher. Remember that comfort is key here, and the moment any part in your body tells you to stop, your first priority is to listen!

After you feel satisfied with your stretch, lower your torso back onto the mat, place your hands folded in front of you, and let your head rest gently on your hands. Close your eyes, and relax as you feel the new found freedom that your back now can enjoy. As with all yoga poses, you should mark your progress as a personal achievement, and do not compare your results to what others are capable of doing. All of our bodies are very different, all of us have our own weaknesses and strengths, so just work at your own pace!

As you begin your yoga practices, its important that you have a comfortable mat that is thick enough to protect your body from the hard floor. Be sure to find a good yoga mat that has great traction, and that will let you concentrate on your pose without slipping.

Should Of Been Eggs aka S.O.B.E in Zappos.TV

Nov 16, 2009 by Pat W

When Coworkers live together and enjoy breakfast on a regular basis,
they occasionally like to express themselves through song. Myself,
along with the help of my Roommates, Scott J. and Loren B., and some premium breakfast ingredients, S.O.B.E. was born. I speak for all of us when I say the most important meal of the day was our biggest inspiration.

S.O.B.E Lyrics

I sit at the table, I sit down and say
Tell where are the biscuits and give me some gravy
All I know is that I like to smell some bacon in the pan
Or maybe sausage, or little chunks of ham

I like bacon cooked just right
I like pancakes stacked up high
I like orange juice freshly squeezed

Chorus
Should of been eggs on a Sunday morning there on my Plate
No time for sausage, or sausage links

I Cry out to God Nestle Quik is so delicious
But the Kitchens dirty and I don't like doing dishes

Chorus
Should of been eggs on a Sunday morning there on my Plate
No time for sausage, or sausage links

Nov 16, 2009 by Kari P.

The Zappos Outlet Store set a record of $500,000 in sales for the month of October, and celebrated this week with a surprise team party on Wednesday, November 11th. The team was treated to breakfast from Panera Bread, as the managers dressed in 70's costumes, presented each team member with Stress Relief Kits and gift certificates to the store, all to the theme of Kool and the Gang's "Celebration!".

Sue Maurer, Outlet Assistant Manager, commented on how awesome the team has been at displaying Core Value #2: Embrace and Drive Change

"The Outlet Store has been transformed since August with the help of our Fulfillment Center friends! We have increased our display capacity on the sales floor and our back stock area by at least 30%. We have also changed our pricing structure and have increased our marketing efforts in order to pump up the volume of our sales. Our team has definitely driven and embraced the many changes that have come our way over the past few months and their dedication has paid off in a big way! Special thanks to our fellow team members in Finance, IT, Maintenance, and all of the people in the FC who have helped us with their expertise!"

Day 831 in Coach

Nov 16, 2009 by Dr. Vik

Think too much?

Some of us do, and that's why we just need to get "out of our heads"
once in a while and let things flow...and relish the moments.

What make us different from other species is our unique cognitive
abilities of "thought" which allows us to process information and
intellectualize.

It's quite useful for opening a jar, typing on the computer or even
understanding complex tasks, things a dog simply isn't equipped to do.

But as we continually think, some of the beauty of the moments slip by,
that's why dogs may have it a bit better, in that department.

Remember, as Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer says, "a dog does not
intellectualize, she just accepts and enjoys what the world gives her".

The Best '80s Workout Videos: Jane Fonda's "Complete Workout" in Health and Fitness

Nov 16, 2009 by Tiffany B

When you hear the name Jane Fonda, what's the first thing that pops into your head? It most likely involves workout videos, leotards and the 80's. Jane Fonda released several different workout videos in the 1980's but one of the best workout videos that will still have you working up a sweat today is called Jane Fonda's Complete Workout.

This 80's workout video is not called "Complete Workout" for nothing. In this video Jane will have you working your entire body from head to toe, beginning with the whole body warm-up and finishing with the cool down and stretch.

The workout video starts with an upper body workout aimed to get your arms, shoulders, chest, and back toned and sleek so you can look hot in your halter and sleeveless dresses. It goes through several different toning exercises for a complete upper body workout.

The next part of the workout is a fat burning aerobic workout. You have to remember that this is from the 80's and an aerobic workout today and back then are slightly different. If you do not like to dance or are not very coordinated, then this part of the workout may be a little tricky for you. Jane Fonda likes to keep her aerobic workouts on the dance side and this is very evident in this workout video.

The third part of this workout consists of a lower body workout including the butt, hips, thighs, and the rest of the legs. Jane goes through a variety of different lower body exercises so you too can look good in your leotard for the next workout. The workout ends with a classic cool down and stretch, which is very important during any exercise.

Although the dance moves may be a little out of date for the aerobics portion of this 80's workout video, it will definitely still have you sweating and burning some major calories. This video can be a great change of pace from your usual spinning or kickboxing class. If anything you will definitely get a kick out of the clothing and hairstyles!

Celebrity Gossip: Twilight's Robert Pattinson and Kristin Stewart in Fashion Culture

Nov 16, 2009 by Tiffany B

+Twilight's +Robert Pattinson is setting the record straight in the new issue of Vanity Fair. The actor says he and co-star Kristin Stewart are "simply good friends" and he considers her to be the best "young actress." The star also talks about how he is a very shy and reserved guy and how all this press from Twilight and his supposed romance with Kristin is not something that he likes at all. He tells the magazine, "I guess I'm not the type of guy cut out to do a franchise." Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has something slightly different to say about the actor being shy. She says that he was definitely not shy on the set of the movies as he was "always drunk" and playing his guitar for others. On the relationship between Kristin and Robert, Catherine says, "What Rob and Kristen had is a multitude of feelings for each other . . . Complex, intense fascination." Kristin and Robert have sparked even more rumors about a relationship as the two were seen out several times together while filming the latest installment of Twilight: New Moon, which hits theaters on November 20th.

Jessica Simpson is not taking her sister's being axed from Melrose Place sitting down. The singer voiced her opinion about the show now that Ashlee has been released, and let's just say that she did not speak too highly about the show. On her Twitter account, Jessica wrote, "CW catching up on MP.who writes this crap? i have had bad scripts to work with, but this? thank God my sister is amazing and got you some press." It was announced last month that Ashlee would no longer be starring on Melrose Place and had been let go from the show. Her last episode will be seen in January. It has also been said that Ashlee and her husband Pete Wentz were putting off having another baby since Ashlee had her role on Melrose Place. Could this mean that another little Simpson-Wentz could be coming soon?

Outdoor Movies: "The Blair Witch Project" in Outdoor

Nov 16, 2009 by Steve B.

Ten years ago, Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez redefined moviemaking with "The Blair Witch Project," a labor of love that turned into one of the highest grossing films of that year. According to the movie's opening credits, three student filmmakers went into the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland to do some research on the "Blair Witch," a local Burkittsville legend. The students allegedly disappeared in October 1994, but the footage they shot was recovered a year later.

Myrick and Sanchez reportedly assembled "The Blair Witch Project" from the recovered camcorder tapes. The shaky footage shows Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams camping out in the woods for their film project. Unfortunately, creepy images and sounds start tormenting the young filmmakers. The movie ends with jumbled footage and screaming before the screen finally goes blank.

Prior to the release of "The Blair Witch Project," the movie's publicists were conspicuously silent when asked if the film was real or fiction. The question was quickly answered in the Midwest when Heather Donahue appeared as a waitress in a series of commercials for Steak 'n Shake restaurants. As it turns out, the three "student filmmakers" actually were recruited by the directors to play themselves in the film.

According to the cast members, Myrick and Sanchez handed Donahue, Leonard and Williams instructions on slips of paper prior to each day's shooting. The instructions would say to do things such as "Start an argument" or "Don't believe anything that Heather says." This improvisation gave the film its realistic and chilly feeling, especially the famous scene where Heather Donahue is crying into the camera lens.

In many ways, "The Blair Witch Project" remains one of the purest horror films that uses an outdoor setting. In fact, Emily Riemer of "Paste Magazine" recently reported that Myrick and Sanchez are planning a sequel to their original film, which should be more faithful to the original than the disappointing follow-up in 2000.

Thanksgiving Cooking with Kids in Parents

Nov 14, 2009 by Lisa Kothari

There are many kids who are little chefs in disguise, and even if they aren’t, come Thanksgiving, when everyone is in the kitchen, the kids will appreciate helping you out! It’s a great way to get them involved in the excitement of the big meal. Children will appreciate contributing in any way that they can.

When thinking about some tasks they can do, keep in mind both the child’s age and the amount of time a task takes to do. Make sure that the kitchen fun is age-appropriate, i.e young children should not be using knives or other sharp objects preparing food, and these types of objects should be out of reach so no accidents take place. You may want to provide an apron to your little chef to protect clothes and help them get in the mood. Also, remember that kids will not want to be in the kitchen the whole day, as there are parades to watch, the football to throw, and perhaps a turkey craft to do. So, keep their time in the kitchen limited to keep them excited, but not bored and restless.

Here are some great cooking ideas for the kids:

• Mash the potatoes
• Fill the pie shells with the filling
• Stuff the celery with cream cheese
• Arrange the vegetable tray
• Set out cheese and crackers
• Stir Jell-O
• Freeze ice cubes with cranberries
• Stuff the turkey
• Place ingredients in the salad and toss
• Whip the cream
• Fill the deviled eggs
• Rolling out the pie crust

All of these will be fun. If you have older kids (tweens and teens), perhaps they would like to peel potatoes and/or make the pie filling.
This is a great Thanksgiving Day activity and will really get your children into the spirit of the feast!
