Comfy, casual attire is usually favored by the public. If you can’t wear sneakers to work, these red flats in an athletic-almost-ballerina-style are comfortable yet can pass for dressy, and they go great with skirts and work slacks (and jeans, too, for casual Friday).

It's Good to be Back in Running

Apr 7, 2008 by Chris P.

I ran my first run in like a week and a half today. I actually went to the Las Vegas Corporate Challenge 5K this past weekend, but pretty much passed out immediately after starting the thing (but I'm not counting that) - THAT was dumb. I only ran about three today and it felt good overall - but I was seriously drained afterward. Man, I haven't been this sore in a long time. I spent the rest my night on the couch watching TV - What the hell is wrong with me? Peake is so lazy right now...

My first run back and I find a penny! Very nice!

AFLAC Iron Girl Triathlon - Race Day in Running

Apr 7, 2008 by Chris P.

It's always inspiring when you go to any race and watch. These girls are absolutely incredible. I want to do a Tri at some point in my life, but I'm not a swimmer so it's gonna take a lot to get me to do one. I will though...One day. It was a really nice day for a race and I'm feeling soooooooo much better than I felt all week. Although the expo was still open for business (it shouldn't have been), I still had the opportunity to check out a good portion of the race (Thank you to Zappos Zealot Gayle for workin' the booth). Zappos' very own, Kelly Bennett, came in third overall in the sprint! She rocks! We're VERY proud of her - She's worked really hard over the last bunch of months training for her big race in Florida's Half Ironman in May. GOoOoooooooooOoOooOooooo, KELLY BENNETT!

She's also one of our athletic buyers - Passion for shoes and the sport...I love it :D

Hot dog eating contest? in Inside Zappos

Apr 6, 2008 by Brian K.

Below is an e-mail from Loren, he participated in last years hot dog eating contest and is doing so again this year in about a week! Here is his e-mail that he sent to the masses at Zappos (with some pics from last years fetivities).

Hello Zappos,

I have heard a lot of people talking around the office about taking the hot dog eating title from me. First off, I welcome the challenge and look forward to the competition, however talk is cheap without the follow through. I was informed earlier today that only one person had signed up to challenge me. If that one person is not you,
please refrain from telling me you are going to "take me down" or "this is the end of your reign" or "Watch out, I'm gunning for you this year." This type of taunting should be reserved for people with the intestinal fortitude to put their name on the dotted line and step up to the challenge. I hope this email inspires some of you trash talkers to give it a go and try to beat me, but as you can see below my technique is unbeatable.

An Employee WOW in CEO and COO Blog

Apr 5, 2008 by Tony H. (CEO)

We talk a lot at Zappos about WOWing our customers, but I found this blog post by Stephen H who works in our creative services department that I wanted to share, because it really demonstrates how building a culture of WOW at Zappos applies not only to our customers, but to our employees as well. Here's Stephen's post:

Hawaii... or bust. \\ By Stephen H. \\ Wow, what a day. \\ On March 31st like an April Fools joke that was sent too early, Aloha Airlines ceased operations and entered bankrupcy protection, stranding people who had booked inter island and other misc flights with the carrier. When that happened I received a number of concerned calls and messages from friends and coworkers who knew that I was soon to be married this coming Sunday, and that the following evening I would be traveling with my bride to spend 5 nights in Honolulu, HI. \\ "No, I flew ATA, it's all good" \\ On April 2nd like an April Fools joke that was sent too late, ATA Airlines ceased operations and entered bankruptcy protection. \\ I woke up to those same messages repeating themselves, including the SMS, voice mail, and twitters of the ever diligent Kelly who is the sole member of my team at Zappos.com. To say I was numb was an understatement. I don't really wear my emotions on my sleeve, so I guess waking up and telling my fiance knowing that she probably is going to burst into tears out of frustration/anger/disbelief (pick 2) was a cathartic way of dealing with it. Given the messages in front of me, I did what all people in this day and age do... \\ I Googled it. \\ The results confirmed my fears, I hopped over to Expedia hoping to find something rearranged automagically, perhaps a notice saying ‘oh snap, here ya go, another flight'. Having looked at the seating assignments not 10 hours prior as I was on my way to bed, I briefly let myself wonder if we'd get the same seats, or be split up on our replacement flights. I found my itinerary unaltered so I read a couple more news articles hoping to find a quick and easy resolution. ATA does a lot of work with Southwest, so there was some hope, or maybe just confusion, that they might be of assistance on this seemingly dire occasion. \\ The Expedia hold music wasn't so bad. I say that because after the 2 calls I eventually made to them, I can't tell you what it is. Being not memorable and at the same time not aggrivate you into remembering a tune is certainly an accomplishment. Roughly 45 minutes of this music in my ear, and then Expedia picked up. They explained the various fees I would have to pay if I had to cancel the entire package, and gave me an 800 number for Southwest where they were offering assistance. I did no cancelling yet, as I wanted to know the solution before taking advantage of it. Southwest is a great company with great service, so surely they have an option for me given the connection with ATA all the articles mentioned. \\ So I called Southwest... \\ I hear great things about the service at Southwest. They've come and toured the Zappos facility here in Las Vegas, and we recently had our CEO Tony Hsieh and others go and visit their facility in Texas. Thankfully, I have never really needed their customer service, and have only been exposed to cheery flight attendants and those who tend to their gates at McCarran and Sky Harbor when I was in college. I had a lot of time to think of this stuff, because the hold time was nothing short of amazing. \\ Then, 1:31 (on hour and thirty-one minutes) into some evil hold music, it disconnected. \\ No way. There's no way this great company with great service has something on their system that just bumps people if they've been on hold too long, right? Surely there are backup teams, some extra call centers that can be leveraged, I don't know, something... but was this a fluke? At an hour and a half, disconnected? Without any real choice, I called the number again, hit speaker, and resumed browsing through message boards of distressed passengers. \\ I've been on the receiving end of this kind of stuff having worked in a DirecTV call center during Hurricane so all I could imagine was a flustered rep waiting to pick up the phone just seconds after a former ATA passanger cried on their shoulder or screamed in their ear. Maybe if ATA only served Pocatello, ID and La Junta, CO things would have been simpler, but no... it had to be a Hawaiian airline... the second in just days. These aren't people just visiting loved ones or on business trips (though there are plenty there too) but instead are families, lovers, and friends embarking on trips that will change their lives. Well, lives got changed a little earlier than expected I think. \\ So yeah, I'm still on hold... let's talk about this music. Just thinking about this music turns my world a shade of red, as I begin to go into a rage and at the same time want to build an elevator because that's what my mind is hearing, elevator music.... that subtle soothing but not nice enough for you to stick around tone. This was then accentuated by the overmodulated sound of a Blackberry speaker... not to mention the false hope you get every 8 or so minutes when the music ends... only to start again after 3-4 seconds of silence and an an almost imperceptible click. \\ An hour passes. \\ So at a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes I am beginning to wonder... do I call back on the other cell phone in case I get disconnected again? Was still in disbelief that I had been disconnected and was tending to some growing paranoia that it would happen again. \\ At 1:38 (one hour and thirty-eight minutes) of my second call, a nice woman answers the phone. Just over 3 hours of holding and I am finally talking to the savior of all things aviation. She explained that because I had no part of my flight involving Southwest (just a round trip, no stops, with ATA LAS to HNL) that all we could do was dispute the charges on our credit card, and rebook a flight with another carrier at full price. \\ Resigned to defeat, I poked around online for flights. I had been doing this for a while anyways, I mean I was on hold for so long I had to entertain myself somehow and what better way to do so than to stare at the flights you might have to now overpay for. Our tickets were purchased in January for about $440 each, and there were flights from $1000 to $1200 per person on the various travel sites. \\ Now there were none. \\ Even if I had unlimited funds, on our given days, the results were null. After having a wide selection of flights to choose from, even overpriced, there were now zero. Called mom and updated her. A conversation earlier in the day had sent her to a travel agent, where they'd found one flight that was equally as overpriced. Poked around for alternate dates, not much luck there either. Kara was leaving for work early so we decided to meet at my Mom's and make new honeymoon plans. My job was to cancel the existing plans now that we knew there were no fights. \\ 20 minutes later I was canceled and the nice guy at Expedia was able to cancel the package without any fees, including things previously declared nonrefundable like our full trip of the island. I knew I was in good hands when he said he was the manager of a McDonalds for 8 years, but he exceeded my expectations. He was a good guy and in good spirits and I appreciated the service he provided, kudos to him and Expedia. "I am going to cancel this part anyways, and if they get mad at me they know where to find me" was one memorable quote. \\ The objective once I was with Kara and my Mom was to decide on what to do from here. Mom had disputed the charges, and we'd canceled the trip. Back to square one. We decided to go ahead and shoot for something early next month, 5/3 or so.... \\ And then the phone rang. \\ Sari manages the design portion of my department at Zappos. She is on the phone.... and had found a flight and was offering to book it for us as a wedding gift. We took a look at our options given the time frame and the situation we'd been put in... and accepted. She effectively saved our honeymoon, and for that I'll forever be grateful. If she ever reads this (and sure, I'll send her a link, but really, who's going to get this far down the page....?) I just want to reiterate over and over: \\ THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! \\ Working at Zappos has provided me many memorable experiences, whether that be with our customers or my peers, this will go down as the biggest WOW I've ever had in my nearly three years there. Again, thank you Sari. \\ A big thanks also go to the people I was venting with, or who there there supporting me as I went through what seemed like the longest Thursday of my life. Now next week I can only hope will be the inverse... the best Thursday of my life... my first as a newlywed, in Hawaii.

Argyle Tentacles in Inside Zappos

Apr 5, 2008 by Brian K.

First off, thank you to loyal reader 6! Also known as ZC1788, nice name! There are many like it, but that one is yours! Back on track, hello 6 readers and welcome to the very first edition of Argyle Tentacles. Argyle Tentacles is what I hope will become an ongoing effort to find argyle wearers (like yourself) from across this great country, and maybe even this giant planet (relative to a kickball). The idea was born when I was boarding a Southwest Airlines flight and saw the most creative argyle piece I have ever seen. I was not man enough to snap a pic, so I will try to describe what I saw. There was this woman, from behind I could see glimpses of argyle peeking over her shoulder trying desperately to spread across her back. But no, argyle sweater maker decided that would not happen, this was an argyle in-the-front only sort of shirt. But what made this stand out to me was the fact that the argyle pattern was mixed in with deer! That's right, deer! With antlers. Deer with antlers on a shirt with argyle. Argyle Lodgewear if you will. I was too embarrassed to walk up and get in her face and take a pic for you all, I will suck it up and do so next time. Sorry, don't hate me!

Anyhoo, it seems argyle is not only popular in the Zappos office itself, but even out in little 'ole New York City! Who would have thought that a trend that started in Henderson Nevada would influence the great city of New York. But it has, so just go with it and trust me that it all started in Henderson, Nevada! The pic below is of Aaron, he works at the Adstore, the ad agency that created our latest commercial (among many other things). Not a bad top for an ad guy (sorry guys, don't hate me because I am beautiful - Was that Kelly LeBrock or something?).

But wait, there is more. While on the topic of argyle spreading across the globe (originating in Henderson if you did not catch that twice before) and advertising, I saw the below strapping lad wearing argyle in an ad. Let me give you a little history first. The caveman below toured our office a while back, saw us wearing argyle and he had his our people call our people and we were able to convince them that argyle would help sell more insurance. They bought it, so easy!

fellow CS'ers completed their last day of CLT training, and we couldn't
be more proud of them! Fabio A, Kris K. and Phil S. completed their
last day in the four week training course.
CLT (Customer Loyalty) Training consists of three weeks of classroom
time and a full week on the phones that trains all of our fine CLT
Staff! All Zappos employees, no matter what their position, go through
the training. This allows us all to see into the world of CLT and the
WOW that they deliver on a daily basis.
Phil, a graphic designer, Kris, a production assistant, and Fabio, a
web producer, graduated in style, and all of us in CS would like to
say: "Right on, fellas! Proud of ya!"
And to all of our new CLT team members, for those about to WOW, we salute you!!!!!!

CRAVINGS in Couture

We here at Couture chat about products incessantly. For our readers, we refer, advise and suggest. However there are certain products that cross our desks that require a call to action, so ‘cravings’ was born. Our current cravings are for: Moschino’s stylish sailor-inspired scoop neck top with pleated sleeves/bottom and Jean Paul Gaultier nautically stripped cropped peacoat-esque jacket.

Wear them separately or together for a fabulously layered mixed print look.
Ooooooh la la!

AFLAC Iron Girl Triathlon in Running

Apr 4, 2008 by Chris P.

Zappos.com did a little last minute sponsorship at the AFLAC Iron Girl Triathlon at Lake Las Vegas this past weekend. I managed to pull myself out of bed for the first time all week to help out at the expo. We asked Zoot Sports to come out and help represent Zappos as our vendor partner for this expo. Zoot is such a great company (even though they won't allow us to carry their running footwear yet - I know, low blow, but I had to say it!) with huge roots in Tri.

My athletic buyers and I here at Zappos are big fans of their story and product. Mike and Kevin, our representatives for Zoot, spent the whole weekend helping us out at the booth. Mike and Kevin are great guys and a lot of fun to hang around with. I love race expos. It's always great to get out there and hang with people in the industry and chat it up with the people doing the races...always cool and always inspiring. I wasn't feeling it this time around though. Being sick all week really put me in a lazy, pile of rocks mode. I really wasn't helpful at all during the expo - Thank goodness for Kelly, Gayle (Zappos.com Employee Extraordinaires) and the Zoot Sports reps being there!

The Run to the Venetian in Running

Apr 3, 2008 by Chris P.

Theo is still in town and he invited me and the girls to come live it large at the Venetian Hotel Pool. Sweet! My girls totally love swimming and I got the chance to run to the Venetian AND get a cool down with a nice little swim. My house to the Venetian is a nice little eight mile run up Las Vegas Boulevard. My wife and the kids were meeting me at the Venetian, so I took off a tad earlier than they did. It was hot today. I think it reached the mid eighties, but the ‘coolest' part about the run was when my wife drove by me and the kids were yelling out the window, ‘There's Daddy! HI DADDY! HI DADDY!' Very Cool Stuff indeed :)

Finance has the MADNESS!! in Inside Zappos

March Madness that is! Like always Finance went all out, this time around Finance
threw a March Madness parade. Helping spread the madness, leading the Allstar Varsity Team was Nothing but Net Jimmy and White Chocolate Johnny dribbling the team through the halls! Frank and Devlyn lead the cheerleaders and the Finance Mascots pumped up the crazy Zappos fans! The Referees and Coaches were on hand to closely watch for any foul plays!! Of course like any sporting event there were plenty of peanuts and cotton candy flying through the air to feed the crowd. Big thanks to Audrea for organizing the Madness!

What the Heck, Theo?!?! in Running

Apr 2, 2008 by Chris P.

I was supposed to go for a run yesterday, but things got really busy and I wasn't able to. Nothing wrong with that because I usually try to make it up the next morning (key word: ‘try', because running in the morning sucks). We had our team picnic yesterday (you might have read a little something about this picnic from Brian's Blog), so after a whole day of drinking and eating, a run was completely out of the question. In addition to the picnic, my friend Theo came into town last night, so I should have known I could kiss the whole run idea good-bye when I woke up yesterday morning.

Let me tell you something about Theo. I think we all have friends like this, but Theo is the kind of guy that you wanna totally hang out with twenty-four straight hours and then you don't wanna see him again for another six months. Yes- THAT guy. Seriously though, he's a blast to hang out with. Remember for future reference: Theo Logian Explosion. In any case, we had a really great time last night, so I'm not running today either. Yes, I'm a slacker.

Meet the Zappos Development Team(s) in Inside Zappos

Apr 2, 2008 by Pawel S.

http://blogs.zappos.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-1481-1508/dev-collage.jpg
Check our group photos here!

The Zappos Development team (or Dev) is currently made up of 37 people distributed somewhat unevenly across our 3 offices in Henderson and Reno in Nevada, and Shepherdsville in Kentucky. The Henderson team is the largest group and handles much of the development of the website and back office tools to manage products and any other things that might need managing. The team in Kentucky is based out of our warehouse and works primarily on software related to the picking, packing, shipping and returns of merchandise. The Reno office consists of Dave. He generally rewrites things in C (Booyah!), generates several different kinds of graphs and authors lots of LaTeX documents with complicated mathematical formulas.

We work with a pretty interesting mix of technology. Much of our code is written in Perl, but we also have a lot of code in Java and even some Ruby. We love open source software and try to use it whenever we can because it saves us some development time and is easy to customize.

One of the things that differentiates us from a lot of companies is that we don't really hire coders (or people who just write code). Our developers are also expected in some degree to be architects, project planners, designers, database programmers and system administrators. It may sound like our standards are pretty high (and they are - we do a lot of interviews!), but the most important qualities we look is self motivation and a willingness to learn. If you have those, then all of the other skills will come in time. Of course, Dev isn't just made up of programmers. We also have database administrators, QA testers, release engineers, dev support personnel and managers all under our departmental umbrella.

We're very serious about our work, but we're also pretty goofy and like to have fun. Don't believe me? Check out our group on Flickr - there you'll find shots of some of our departmental outings and a recent parade we put on that was featured in a segment on 60 Minutes:

Does it sound like you or someone you know would like to work in Development at Zappos? Check out our jobs page and give us a call. We're always hiring!
