Sustainability at Zappos

On August 27th, two hundred Zapponians made the move to their new office at 302 E Caron St. in downtown Las Vegas. These pioneers made the journey in advance of their other 1,500 colleagues who are scheduled to move there in October of 2013. The leased space in 302 E Carson offers a great opportunity to test innovative office strategies and ideas that will assist in the development of the new office space: cool strategies and ideas that also center on sustainability.

Why 302 E Carson? It had to be a space that could be renovated to fit Zappos’ culture and specific business needs, as well as provide a sustainable workplace. Ultimately, the 6th and 7th floors of the 11-story building at 302 E Carson were chosen to be Zappos’ first downtown office. Build out only took three months and on August 27th, Kuzco the llama chewed through a ribbon made of carrots to welcome the Zapponians to their new home!

In this post, we’ll specifically look at four of the most prominent sustainable attributes of 302 E Carson and how they foreshadow what’s to come for Zappos’ future home at 400 Stewart (Old City Hall).

LEED Certification

In 2010, Thompson National Properties, the property owner, completed a major renovation of 302 E Carson. The renovation by Shangri Lai earned a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the USGBC (United States Green Building Council) for its core and shell. Some of the most noticeable LEED features that Zappos employees will get to experience are the low flow water fixtures in the restrooms that save 40% annually, the dual glaze windows to keep out the heat, the upgraded efficient HVAC equipment that keep the space comfortable, and the ample bike parking.

High Performance Recycling

The inhabitants at 302 E Carson are also experimenting with a unique recycling system. Unlike most traditional offices, waste bins at every individual desk are not present. Instead of purchasing two hundred 12-liter waste bins per desk or two hundred waste bins and two hundred recycling bins per desk, the design team bought only forty 46-liter split bin (recycle and waste) containers from Simplehuman and spaced them strategically throughout the office. The design team then went one step further; they flipped the traditional use of the split sides, using the larger waste side for recycling and using the smaller recycle side for waste. The bins are well marked with a quirky Zappos-style graphic sticker on the top lid that clearly labels the two sides and what goes in them. The graphic lists recyclables such as “paper, aluminum and plastic” and trash such as “dirty tissues, gum, boogers, and weird stuff.” According to Brad Tomm, Zappos’ Sustainability Manager, “the removal of bins from employee’s desks make the trash/recycle experience more active and less passive. Having to physically get up and place one’s trash in the bin creates an experience where people are more apt to do the right thing and take a brief moment to sort their waste correctly.” Using this system, Zappos’ goal is to recycle 80 – 90% of the office waste.

Alternative Fuel Vehicle

One of the favorite guest and employee perks at Zappos is the use of the fleet vehicles for transportation to and from the airport or important meetings. The Zappos Concierge team (ZCON) manages a fleet of six vehicles and one bus. New at 302 E Carson is Zappos’ first alternative-fueled vehicle, a CNG (compressed natural gas) Dodge mini van. This spacious little van was converted by World CNG and is fueled at Clean Energy’s numerous local fueling stations. This van will burn cleaner and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional gasoline. As the fleet vehicles reach their life expectancy, Zappos plans to always give replacement priority to electric, hybrid, or CNG vehicles.

Sustainable Furniture

The last bit of clever coolness to cover is the choice to furnish the office space with the newest modular designs from Herman Miller, a company known for its strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Herman Miller’s Sense™ desking system was chosen for the office space because of its flexibility, compatibility and sustainability. Over two hundred desks offer employees modern work stations that can be moved, modified, and reconfigured without using a single tool. Zappos also chose the Sense™ desking system because it is comprised from 46% recycled content materials, contains FSC-certified wood and is GREEN GUARD® certified as a low emitting product.

To wrap up, Zappos’ new office space at 302 E Carson is a really sweet spot. Think of it as a sneak peak for what’s to come at the NEW Zappos headquarters at 400 Stewart St. -- Coming soon in October 2013!

Congratulations, Mitch!  How does it feel to be recognized by your Content peeps?

It feels great to be part of such an exclusive fraternity!

What do you believe are the three most important things you can do as an MA to work in tandem with Content?

Be clear, responsive, and appreciative.

Share with us the single most important piece of advice you have received and how it helps you WOW the people you work with.

Treat everyone with respect. Pretty self-explanatory.

Between the characters of Nico Toscani (Steven Seagal, Above the Law), John McClane (Bruce Willis, Die Hard) and Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson, Lethal Weapon), whom would you most want to be partnered with in a blockbuster action film?

John McClane. He walked on glass. Barefoot.

Being born and raised in Wisconsin, are you a connoisseur of exotic cheese?

Not a connoisseur, just a fan.

Finally, the big question!  Who is the best Packers QB of all-time?  Aaron Rodgers or Brett Favre?

Brett who?

For All-time I am going with 5x NFL Champion Bart Starr. For my generation, Aaron Rodgers is pretty darn good.

I Got it FO' FREEEEEEE!

Upon arrival to work, Joe heads directly to the Zcafe– Zappos' own, internal version of Starbucks. Here, Joe can, for free, order anything he wants–ranging anywhere from Lemonade to Joe's personal favorite: Double Blended Half-Soy Nonfat Decaf Organic Chocolate Brownie Iced Vanilla Double-Shot Gingerbread Frappuccino Extra Hot With Foam Whipped Cream. While Joe waits for his drink to be ready, he is free to grab a scone or other breakfasty pastry.
On the way to his desk, Joe stops by one of the many break rooms and gets a few drinks from the refrigerator to get him through the day. Joe then heads over to his desk to catch up on his email. Joe sees that he can get free tickets to Carrot Top that night. Having always wanted to see Carrot Top, he responds to the email. Soon after, he gets a response saying his tickets have been reserved and he can pick them up from the Luxor box office at 8.
So let's recap. Not more than 10 minutes after getting to work, Joe has already received a multitude of free beverages as well as free tickets to see Carrot Top.
As an intern, my experience has been similar. So far I've been to: Reggae in the Desert, Carrot Top, Las Vegas Film Festival, a Las Vegas 51s game, a screening of 'Monsters Inc.' in a park, as well as a pre-release screening of 'The Naked Brand', I have also acquired the following books: The Lean Startup, Comedy Writing, Triumph of the City, and Delivering Happiness. Additionally Zappos has paid for many-a-lunch and dinner for me, as well as *breaks out into song and dance* shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, EVERYBODY!!!!! Yesterday, as part of a team meeting, we played glow in the dark putt putt golf… on the clock!
By providing such benefits, Zappos has encouraged me to experience more of Las Vegas than I would have on my own. In doing so, they have provided me with tons of fun experiences which will turn into lasting memories and I think we can all agree that both of those things make for happier people.

On any given day, you will hear "I got it FO' FREEEEEEE", a reference to a line from the movie Bridesmaids resonate through the halls of the Zappos Interns' hotel. That's because on any given day, you can almost rest assured that someone got something for free while at work. On their quest to deliver happiness, Zappos goes out of their way to provide its employees with tons of free, life-enhancing benefits. To further examine this idea, let's follow a typical morning of a Zappos employee, Joe:

HOPE Home Foundation Helps a First-Time Home Buyer from Zappos

Earlier this year, Zappos launched a new benefit for our team members through a non-profit organization called the Hope Home Foundation. This organization is locally based and helps our employees find their perfect home or apartment by offering financial education, coaching, and even down payment assistance!

This past week, one Zapponian who took advantage of this program just signed the papers and received the keys to his very first home! The Zappos Benefits team along with a few folks from the Hope Home Foundation congratulated Matt T. on this huge milestone.

HOPE Home Foundation,home ownership,first-time homeowner,Zappos Culture,Zappos Benefits, Zappos HQ,Las Vegas,

We asked Matt a couple of questions about his home shopping experience with the help of HOPE Home Foundation:

When did your journey to home ownership start and what made you decide to purchase a home rather than rent?

M: I started looking for a home in late May and really got serious in early June. I had rented since college and always dreamed of owning a home. The housing market is Vegas was really hit hard in 2008 and it finally became feasible for me to buy a home at the current prices and interest rates. I figured this was as good a time as any to buy a home and decided to see what was out there!

How did you get in touch with the HOPE foundation?

M: Bhawna (from the Zappos Benefits team) and I are friends and I take the yoga class she set up at work. I happened to mention I was looking at buying a home. She said she had this cool program called the Hope Home Foundation and they work with Zappos employees. My interest was really piqued when Bhawna mentioned I may be eligible for down payment assistance.  The rest was history!

How did they make the home buying experience easier for you?

M: I really knew nothing about home buying when entering the program. Dawn, the HOPE foundation director, hooked me up with Tanya, my realtor and Melissa, my loan officer. The framework was all in place before I even came along which was cool. I was concerned about home buying because I didn’t want to get taken advantage of but immediately after meeting everyone over there I knew I was in the right place. They honestly want to help new home owners with finding a new home and improving the Las Vegas community. I’m really still amazed with how much they are dedicated to helping people.

Now that you have the keys in your hands, how does it feel to be a first-time homeowner?

M: Pretty awesome. Instead of throwing my money away every month in rent, I can reinvest into my new home. I have a lot of ideas with how I can really make my house a home and am very excited to experiment!
