Family Running Tips & Advice: Start with Comfortable Gear

Family running is great for family fitness time and also can be done competitively. Before getting started, make sure everyone has comfortable and appropriate gear. Shoes are especially important, but all outer wear and clothing can have an impact.

Clothing
Clothing appropriate for family running should be lightweight and non-restrictive. Freedom of movement is important. That doesn't mean the more loose the better. Baggy clothing will be in the way when attempting to run. Stick to thin, non-wicking fabrics that conform to the body's shape without being too tight. Also remember to dress the family appropriately for the weather.

Jackets
Running jackets should be lightweight. They also should be made from materials that don't absorb and hold moisture. Cotton is not a good material for running jackets. Fleece is a popular material for running jackets. With proper construction, even lightweight running jackets can protect your family from the elements.

Shoes & Socks
Keeping in line with the lightweight trend, shoes also should be comfortable and appropriate for the terrain. There are different running shoes for trail running, track & field, cross training, motion control, stability, and more. Different features are needed depending on the running surface, Generally, look for something with moisture control, stability, and support.

Bags
If you or other family members need to carry supplies, pack as lightly as possible. Heavy luggage can weigh you down while running. Water and light snacks are a common and necessary item during running. If you aren't running far, you may not need much else. Backpacking adventures will require more equipment. Choose the lightest waterproof bag that can carry everything you need. Minimize items to mostly necessity, rather than desires.

Accessories
Depending on the weather or other factors, you may have accessories like hats, gloves, belts, a back brace, and more. Be sure to choose items that won't be in the way of running These items should not weigh you down. Also think about whether they may cause any distractions, like making adjustments to them during running. Go for minimal weight, moisture control, and minimal distraction.
