Zappos Employees Leave The Car At Home

Las Vegas is known as a “car-town”. The city’s infrastructure was built for the car commuter and almost everyone drives a car to work (even Zappos employees). But a few Zappos troopers are bravely taking alternative transportation for the majority of their commutes.

One such employee is Steven Allen, the Zappos Campus Programs Manager. Steven lives in one of the City’s farthest suburbs but takes the RTC bus to work at least three times a week. The round trip is more than 30 miles per day; he averages 90 miles a week on the bus! The cool thing is that he rides the Centennial Express route, one of RTC’s express buses that jumps on the freeway and has a direct route (no stops) into downtown. In fact, the first stop on the route is just 3 blocks away from Zappos. Even better, the bus stop Steven uses to get home from Zappos is literally on Zappos’ campus perimeter. “I don’t even have to cross the street. I just walk around to the back of our campus, hop on the bus, and enjoy a stop-free ride home. It’s awesome! Plus, the bus is able to utilize the carpool lane, which I am painfully reminded of on the days I drive my car into work”, said Steven. He’s able to do it all on the bus. He can relax and listen to music or power through work and emails. The RTC also understands that we live in a very ‘connected’ world these days and is currently piloting a free WIFI program on the Centennial Express route.

Chris Race is a Technology Project Manager at Zappos and rides to work once a week and for fun 2-3 times a week.  When riding in, he uses the bike rack just off the North Garage behind the lobby.  For the sake of everyone in his area, he’ll clean up in the locker room located in the basement before heading upstairs full of endorphins and ready to ROCK.  Zappos installed more than 10 showers for men and women based on the guidelines established by the LEED certification.  Chris likes to ride his bike because it is a great fitness perk and helps save almost 200 miles a month on his car, which is money in the bank!  Morning rides in are usually full of neat sunrises, still air, and a line of people lined up to high-five everyone riding a bike to work.  In other words, jump on the saddle and head in on two wheels!

Zappos Continues Support of Adopt a Highway

Zappos is excited to continue its commitment to cleaner highways by renewing its partnership with Adopt A Highway for the ninth year.  When Zappos moved to Las Vegas in 2005, we were only able to sponsor three miles of highway. But every year since then, we’ve been able to adopt more miles with Adopt a Highway. Now in 2013, Zappos sponsors 158 miles of highway in the Las Vegas valley and we’re on the waiting list for 20 more miles! We are excited to say we’re the second largest sponsor of highway cleanup in the nation!

Adopt a Highway crews clean the right shoulders of these sponsored highways up to two times a month. In 2012, 9,300 bags of garbage were collected along the roadsides, equaling roughly 40 tons of waste. We don’t even want to imagine how things would be without this amazing program! Needless to say, we’re proud to continue our support of keeping Nevada’s highways clean.

Zappos "The Art of Style" inside P3 Studio

As Las Vegas residents, a lot of us Zapponians are huge fans of The Cosmoplitan because of its cool vibe and luxe gathering spaces like the Chandelier Bar and the Boulevard Pool. So it’s really exciting for us to partner with The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas to experiment with a pop-up store/art installation concept inside its P3 Studio—a space normally reserved for funky art and performance artists.

From now until October 31st, Zappos is taking over the P3 Studio space with a gallery-like exhibit showcasing some of our categories in clothing, shoes and accessories. From fashion to running to outdoor, our talented and creative designers worked very hard to tell an artistic story through the many products Zappos.com offers.

If you’re in Vegas, make sure to stop by and check out our space, redeem your Zappos Gift Card or simply shop the iPad® kiosk located inside the studio!

P.S. While you’re at it, there are tons of awesome restaurants located on the same floor as the studio including a certain “secret” pizza joint. If you don’t know what/where that is…just ask!

I Got it FO' FREEEEEEE!

Upon arrival to work, Joe heads directly to the Zcafe– Zappos' own, internal version of Starbucks. Here, Joe can, for free, order anything he wants–ranging anywhere from Lemonade to Joe's personal favorite: Double Blended Half-Soy Nonfat Decaf Organic Chocolate Brownie Iced Vanilla Double-Shot Gingerbread Frappuccino Extra Hot With Foam Whipped Cream. While Joe waits for his drink to be ready, he is free to grab a scone or other breakfasty pastry.
On the way to his desk, Joe stops by one of the many break rooms and gets a few drinks from the refrigerator to get him through the day. Joe then heads over to his desk to catch up on his email. Joe sees that he can get free tickets to Carrot Top that night. Having always wanted to see Carrot Top, he responds to the email. Soon after, he gets a response saying his tickets have been reserved and he can pick them up from the Luxor box office at 8.
So let's recap. Not more than 10 minutes after getting to work, Joe has already received a multitude of free beverages as well as free tickets to see Carrot Top.
As an intern, my experience has been similar. So far I've been to: Reggae in the Desert, Carrot Top, Las Vegas Film Festival, a Las Vegas 51s game, a screening of 'Monsters Inc.' in a park, as well as a pre-release screening of 'The Naked Brand', I have also acquired the following books: The Lean Startup, Comedy Writing, Triumph of the City, and Delivering Happiness. Additionally Zappos has paid for many-a-lunch and dinner for me, as well as *breaks out into song and dance* shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, EVERYBODY!!!!! Yesterday, as part of a team meeting, we played glow in the dark putt putt golf… on the clock!
By providing such benefits, Zappos has encouraged me to experience more of Las Vegas than I would have on my own. In doing so, they have provided me with tons of fun experiences which will turn into lasting memories and I think we can all agree that both of those things make for happier people.

On any given day, you will hear "I got it FO' FREEEEEEE", a reference to a line from the movie Bridesmaids resonate through the halls of the Zappos Interns' hotel. That's because on any given day, you can almost rest assured that someone got something for free while at work. On their quest to deliver happiness, Zappos goes out of their way to provide its employees with tons of free, life-enhancing benefits. To further examine this idea, let's follow a typical morning of a Zappos employee, Joe:

HOPE Home Foundation Helps a First-Time Home Buyer from Zappos

Earlier this year, Zappos launched a new benefit for our team members through a non-profit organization called the Hope Home Foundation. This organization is locally based and helps our employees find their perfect home or apartment by offering financial education, coaching, and even down payment assistance!

This past week, one Zapponian who took advantage of this program just signed the papers and received the keys to his very first home! The Zappos Benefits team along with a few folks from the Hope Home Foundation congratulated Matt T. on this huge milestone.

HOPE Home Foundation,home ownership,first-time homeowner,Zappos Culture,Zappos Benefits, Zappos HQ,Las Vegas,

We asked Matt a couple of questions about his home shopping experience with the help of HOPE Home Foundation:

When did your journey to home ownership start and what made you decide to purchase a home rather than rent?

M: I started looking for a home in late May and really got serious in early June. I had rented since college and always dreamed of owning a home. The housing market is Vegas was really hit hard in 2008 and it finally became feasible for me to buy a home at the current prices and interest rates. I figured this was as good a time as any to buy a home and decided to see what was out there!

How did you get in touch with the HOPE foundation?

M: Bhawna (from the Zappos Benefits team) and I are friends and I take the yoga class she set up at work. I happened to mention I was looking at buying a home. She said she had this cool program called the Hope Home Foundation and they work with Zappos employees. My interest was really piqued when Bhawna mentioned I may be eligible for down payment assistance.  The rest was history!

How did they make the home buying experience easier for you?

M: I really knew nothing about home buying when entering the program. Dawn, the HOPE foundation director, hooked me up with Tanya, my realtor and Melissa, my loan officer. The framework was all in place before I even came along which was cool. I was concerned about home buying because I didn’t want to get taken advantage of but immediately after meeting everyone over there I knew I was in the right place. They honestly want to help new home owners with finding a new home and improving the Las Vegas community. I’m really still amazed with how much they are dedicated to helping people.

Now that you have the keys in your hands, how does it feel to be a first-time homeowner?

M: Pretty awesome. Instead of throwing my money away every month in rent, I can reinvest into my new home. I have a lot of ideas with how I can really make my house a home and am very excited to experiment!

Three-Week Recap from the Zappos Interns

Hey everyone!

It’s been over three weeks since the last blog post from the Zappos Interns, so here’s a quick rundown of what we’ve been up to lately:

1. Our first All-Hands meeting: On June 22, we participated in a Tech All Hands with all the other tech employees at Zappos. The afternoon included the usual briefings from top company officials, the CTO doing a ridiculous dance, and even a spoof video made right here at Zappos called “Sh*t Developers Say”. After that, we all enjoyed a Happy Hour poolside at Green Valley Ranch, which had been booked out specially for Zappos employees. Pretty sweet. But the highlight of the afternoon was definitely the surprise appearance of the legendary Steve Wozniak, who indulged us with a half-hour Q&A about his time at Apple, his thoughts on the future of technology, and some funny stories. That was surreal.

2. A volunteer day at the local Animal Shelter: Zappos is really involved in the Vegas community, and it trickles down all the way to the interns. All of us spent a day learning about the great animal shelter here, as well as walking and playing with dogs. It was ridiculously hot outside, but hanging out with dogs usually makes things much more bearable!

3. General craziness around the Zappos campus: Probably the best part is the frequent table tennis sessions all around the office. Zappos even has a unique 3-on-3 version of ping-pong, aptly named “Zing-Zong”. It’s a bit ridiculous to outline all the rules (basically because when you watch it seems as if there are no rules, and when you play you learn a new rule every time). Suffice to say that it’s a cross between regular ping-pong and volleyball, with each team setting up teammates and the ball not being dead till it hits the ground. It’s sick.

4. July 4th week(end): My superhero Christina had a July 4th pool party, and that night we all walked to a nearby parking lot to watch fireworks. The display here in Vegas was definitely better than what I’ve seen in most other places. Then, on July 6th, for another day outside the office, all of us hiked up the nearby Mt. Charleston. The weather was beautiful, about 20 degrees cooler than in Las Vegas, and the views were fantastic.

5. A trip to the Grand Canyon: One of the best things about working in Vegas is the proximity to so much nature (e.g: California beaches, Zion, Grand Canyon, etc.). Three of us decided to make an impromptu trip to the Grand Canyon a couple weekends ago, and were there within two hours. We spent all day taking in the sights and climbing to as many treacherous places as possible. Good times.

All in all it’s amazing how quickly the time has gone – we’re already starting our eighth week here at Zappos! I’m pretty bummed that summer is over in a month. But up to this point, I couldn’t have asked for more. As interns, we’re always involved and in the middle of things here, it’s never lonely, and there’s a great work-life balance – all things that I’d heard thrown around at the beginning of the summer, but that I’d never truly understood until now. It’s a great feeling.

Till next time,

Ravi

Out with Old City Hall, In with the New Zappos Campus!

A couple of weeks ago, a few Zapponians were invited to start demolition on the old Las Vegas City Hall building on 400 East Stewart. What better way to kick off the construction of our new campus than by starting with Mayor Goodman's old office?

Move over Old City Hall! Zappos is moving in to the neighborhood!
