Are You Ready for Go Skateboarding Day?

For some, Go Skateboarding Day is a bit of a redundancy.  Similar to Breathe Air Day or Stare At Your Phone Day, there’s some things that people will continue to do with little persuasion or reminding. For the diehards, skateboarding is an everyday occurrence that is a part of their DNA. From scoping out new skate spots across town to grinding neighborhood curbs, no time is wasted when connecting with your board and perfecting  your craft.

But let’s face it; you can’t be on your board all the time; you’ve got to account for hours spent at school, work, sleeping, eating, zoning out in front of the television, etc. Perhaps you’ve got big-time responsibilities and you only have a couple hours a week to dedicate to your favorite pastime. Maybe you put your board into the garage where it collects dust and is commonly referred to as “my old board”. You might have even told some people the ever popular, “I used to skate”, as you regale your crew with stories from your skateboard past. But it’s okay; your chance to get reacquainted with skateboarding is right around the corner.

Since 2004, June 21st has been officially named Go Skateboard Day, a holiday to embrace skateboarding and the positive impact it has had on youth culture the world over.  June 21 is also the official start of summer, making it the perfect day to put your phone on silent and roll with your squad to the local skate park, demo, or contest.

The Zappos Rideshop has you covered to kick off the skate season in style, keeping you in the latest from the top brands in the industry. Stay laced up and ready to cruise with the laid-back Cali vibes of Vans® low-tops or slip-ons, or get ready for a more serious shred session with help from Nike SB®, adidas® Skateboarding, and DC® Footwear.  No matter what style skate shoe you’re repping these days, from minimalist to technical, it’s all about a cool look and a grippy sole to keep you going strong.

Get set up with awesome designs from Blind® and Darkstar® Skateboards that showcase retro logos, gnarly skulls, and everything in between.  The standard skateboard is comfortable in the street, skate park, and beyond. For those looking to coast across campus or shuttle around local neighborhoods, longboards and cruisers will have you set for the long haul.  Expertly crafted boards from Globe®, Gold Coast®, and Dusters® will have you covering ground like never before!

When you’re not actually riding around, keep your hands free and stow your gear in durable backpacks from Dakine® and Vans®.  There’s nothing worse than getting the hook up from a local contest and not having anywhere to stash the goods! From class to the skate park, there’s plenty of room for your books and extra wheels, bearings, tools, and other necessities. After all, no mission is complete without the proper supplies.

So don’t forget to check out your local skate park on June 21 and go skate! Pay homage to the action sport that has been so influential and inspired so many to do their thing. Do what you always do and participate in the movement or remember your roots and get back out there. Whether it’s an all-day event or just an hour of cruising around with your friends, have fun with it and be safe!

Time to Update Your Skate Style!

Over the decades, skateboarding has taken on a life of its own. Once merely a by-product of surfing and the California lifestyle, skateboarding evolved exponentially and its influence stretched from coast tocoast and around the globe. Dare you call it a sport, for many, skateboarding is a way of life. Like a fish out of water, the surfer too found its way to land. Eventually moving away from the salty air of the boardwalk, the skater adapted to whatever environment provided the gnarliest of sessions, from the harsh concrete and asphalt of the skate park to more vertical landscapes.

One of the key aspects of the lifestyle is style. It’s hard to imagine another group of fanatics so obsessed with their aesthetic and dedicated to their brands as skateboarders. If you cut to the core of skateboard style, perhaps the single most important identifier is the footwear. The quickest way to let the world know you are the real deal is the skate shoes on your feet. The scuffs on the toe, the ripped laces, the subtle holes, that’s the stuff hours of dedication are made of! The selection of the right shoe can weigh heavy on a young mind, or seem downright exasperating to the parent of the radical one. From low-profile canvas skate shoes destined for maximum chilling to technical models set to shred, The Zappos Rideshop has you covered.

The evolution of the skate shoe has closely mimicked the timeline of skateboarding progression itself. The early low-profile vulcanized models led way to more advanced cupsole technology. As riding got more technical in the ‘90s, so did the shoes themselves. Skaters quickly realized that stair sets and huge gaps called for more padding, support, and comfort. A bruised heel or two have sidelined even the most hardened of skate veterans. Luckily, the skate shoe companies of the modern era have their craft down to a science. Often designed and tested by professional riders themselves, skate shoes reflect an amalgamation of style, functionality, and performance.

Dedicated brands such as Vans®, DC®, Emerica®, and HUF® have developed skate shoes to be less bulky, more comfortable, and durable than ever before.  Traditionally speaking, vulcanized soles are low-profile and provide optimum flex, board feel, and grip for superior control. Although not as durable or impact resistant as their cupsole counterparts, vulcanized technology has progressed to provide the best of both worlds.  Cupsole technology is easily described as an outsole that is shaped like a cup around the sole of your foot.  Cupsoles were thought to have less feel and flex compared to shoes with vulcanized construction, but many brand such as Nike SB®, etnies® and, adidas® Skateboarding offer slimmed- down versions with great board feel.

From future pros imagining their first video part to casual cruisers intent on the next sesh, there’s nothing like lacing up a fresh pair of skate sneakers right out of the box. Update your current kicks or pass on a new pair to the next generation of shredders. With brands like Supra®, C1RCA®, and Globe®, it’s no wonder that skateboarding shoes have set the standard for cool since the late ‘80s and have pushed the limits ever since!

New Brand Spotlight: Penny Skateboards

Penny founder Ben Mackay received his first plastic skateboard when he was 5-years old. "I got my board second hand and painted it blue with gold pinstripes. I thought it was the baddest thing ever." Nearly 30 years later, he realized it was time to bring that little plastic board back for good.

With 12 years experience in skateboard manufacturing, Mackay and the rest of the Penny crew has a strong appreciation for what it takes to make great quality skateboards. "I've channeled everything I've learned in manufacturing and design to come up with a high performance, long lasting, and mega fun plastic skateboard," says Mackay. From looking at any skateboard you can see whether its fundamentals are balanced. You can see it as each component comes together to make the final product and you can feel it under your feet and in your hands. And it's what sets Penny Skateboards above the rest.

Each Penny Skateboard is built with the highest quality raw materials and fanatical attention to detail. Penny Skateboards are designed and built to look good, perform well, and exceed all your expectations. Penny Skateboards - since forever.

Skateboard Pioneers Do It Again

santa cruz, completes, rideshop, skateboards, skateboarding, tiki cruise missle, tuck n rolla, surf, screaming foot,

As if Santa Cruz Skateboards hasn't done enough for the skateboarding industry in the past 30 years, they've done it again with their new line of innovative completes. In the '80s and '90s, Santa Cruz began to produce legendary boards, designs that would help usher in a new wave of popularity for skateboarding and their latest releases could spark a whole new movement.

In 1985, Jim Phillips drew the Screaming Hand, which not only became an iconic Santa Cruz image, but an image that would become nearly synonymous with the entire skateboard industry. To this day, the Screaming Hand can be found on Santa Cruz decks, nearly untouched from when it was first created. The Santa Cruz Screaming Foot Right Complete is a throwback to the original Screaming Hand design, but the board has been cut into a foot shape and detailed with Phillips’ original aesthetic detailing. The White Bullet B147 trucks and 60mm OJ Hot Juice 78A wheels provide a smoothly stable ride. This complete offers a mellow concave design; with the board being so flat it almost feels broken in, great for flip tricks and maximum board control when flipping in and out of tricks. If you prefer the brands streamlined, old-school styles, the Santa Cruz Eye Pod Complete is a durable 100% Norther American maple wood deck that features original Jim Phillips artwork and a sleek stripe griptape. Cruise and striking speeds with the 65mm Road Rider™ 78A wheels and Yellow Bullet™ B137 trucks.

You don't need to be on the big island to cruise around with the Santa Cruz Rob Tiki Complete. The Cruz Missle II concave design features a steeper kicked nose for added response along with Yellow Bullet B147 trucks and 60mm OJ Hot Juice 78A wheels for cruising all night long. The surf-by-day/skate-by-night set will really enjoy the Santa Cruz Mako Shark Complete, a plywood board with a classic top graphic and sand spray grit. Hang ten on the streets using the equipped Black Bullet™ B147 trucks and 65mm Road Rider 78A wheels. Don’t worry, this board is only 33 inches long from nose to tail, so you don’t need to tie it down to the roof of your car. Speaking of cars, they also created the Santa Cruz Tuck N Rolla Complete, a hot and heavy hot rod-inspired design. The metal flake vinyl topdeck with custom stitched diamond pleats along with a foam liner for a cushioned and smooth ride that doesn't require shoes make this one of the most distinctive styles in the brand's history.

Santa Cruz Skateboards have proven once again that they are true pioneers of the industry. Check out all of our Santa Cruz Skateboards and other action sports products in the Rideshop on
