For over 50 years, Original Penguin has been making apparel that exudes confidence and class. As a known icon of fine American apparel, the Penguin logo on Original Penguin clothing has come to represent the confidence and class of a timeless brand. But where did the Penguin come from?
Abbot Pederson was a salesman for Munsingwear undergarment factory in Minneapolis. While in New York City on business, he had a few drinks and found himself at a taxidermist stand that was selling stuffed penguins after stumbling out to find a taxi. He purchased a penguin, named him Pete and boarded a flight back to Minneapolis. On the flight, Pete lost his head – literally. The flight attendant took Pederson’s tie and tied Pete’s head back on; the penguin wearing a tie logo was born. Pederson had the logo embroidered on a shirt in 1955 and the company still uses it today.
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Arnold Palmer and Clint Eastwood helped make Original Penguin a true American classic. The brand saw resurgence in 2000 when there was a heavy demand for mid-century classics. Today’s styles feature the same original logo with updated details and Original Penguin continues to develop clothing for men, women and children that reflect an active lifestyle. Not bad for a stuffed penguin.
