Super Awesome Description Award Winner - June 2011

The Super Awesome Description award is a way of recognizing a member of our innovative content department once a month. If a product description is particularly witty or creative, anyone in the company can nominate the person who wrote it. The nominations are then read by other members of the content department and voted upon; the description with the most votes wins. The writer of that description is rewarded with a trophy and a certificate, not to mention recognition from their peers.

content team, patagonia kids, product descriptions, super awesome description, super awesome description winner, zappos culture, Zappos Development, zappos familyThe winner for June is Erica S. Erica is part of the Clothing team and her portfolio includes Athletic Performance Apparel, Outdoor Apparel and Outdoor Apparel 2. She certainly wowed us with her sweet yet funny (because it’s true) description for the Patagonia Kids Girl’s Blossoms Dress.  Congrats, Erica!

We asked Erica a few fun questions to get to know her better. Check out her answers below!

What is your biggest Grammar pet peeve?

Words that are purposely misspelled like, “Karen’s Kat Kindergarten”. I start twitching when I see stuff like that.

What inspired you when writing this description?

I have friends who talk about all the clothes their kids refuse to wear. This description goes out to them. Dress your kids in whatever you want while you can!

What's a fact people would be surprised to learn about you?

I have a lazy eye and had to wear an eye patch when I was younger to strengthen it. Arrrrrrrrrr matey!!

What is your favorite core value and why?

‘Create Fun and A Little Weirdness’ – I think too many people confuse having fun with being immature. You can take some time for yourself every day to have a good laugh and relax, even if it’s just watching a talking dog video or serenading your co-worker with Lady Gaga songs.

Thinking of a beach getaway for the family? Pack up the kids, some beach towels, beach toys,  swimsuits, and plenty of sunscreen and get ready for some memorable times on the shore this summer.

There are plenty of kid-friendly beaches across the country to explore! These beaches get an A+ for having amenities like restrooms and showers, good sand quality, kid-friendly waves*, and overall picturesque beauty. Here are just a few family-friendly beaches worth checking out this summer:

Coronado Beach, Coronado Island, California: With the historic Hotel Del Coronado as its backdrop, this wide stretch of beach makes it perfect for a family beach picnic. The little kids will enjoy building sandcastles while the older kids can play beach volleyball or rollerblade on the 15-mile pathway. There’s lots of free parking, restrooms, year-round lifeguards and showers. You can also enjoy a nice lunch in the hotel.

Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii: Just west of Poipu Beach is a little protected cove aptly named “Baby Beach”. This is perfect place for young kids and babies to get their first taste of the ocean while being protected from the currents. There’s also a grassy park by the parking lot which is perfect for picnics.

Santa Cruz Beach, Santa Cruz, California: The kids will have a blast on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk which features lots of rides, games and entertainment. The older kids can even learn to surf on Cowell’s Beach which usually has great conditions for beginners.

Siesta Beach, Siesta Key, Florida: The powdery white sand makes this beach one of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see. There’s a shaded picnic area and a playground for the kids, not to mention lots of family-friendly restaurants to choose from.

Ko’olina Beach Park, Oahu, Hawaii: Nestled in the west side of Oahu, this resort beach is home to the upscale Marriott Ihilani Resort and more recently, the Aulani Disney Resort. There is, however, a public-access section, so you don’t need to shell out big bucks to stay at the hotel or its many villas to enjoy the beach. There are three kid-friendly man-made lagoons that make up the beach area, each one protected by rock barriers. There are also several grassy and shaded picnic areas, lifeguards, restrooms and showers, making it convenient for parents and kids alike.

*constant adult supervision is a must at any beach.

Patagonia Keeps The Kids Playing Rain, Snow Or Shine

patagonia, patagonia kids, winter, snowballs, snowman, snow angels, warm, fleece, jacket, gloves, beanie

Remember going outside as a child after it snowed and the fun you would have making snowmen, building snow forts and throwing snowballs? The creative minds at Patagonia have changed playing in the snow forever with clothing that keeps your kids so warm, they won’t need to warm up with hot chocolate afterwards.

Perfect for the slopes and beyond, the Patagonia Kids Girl’s Sidewall Jacket is a durable 2-layer shell with H2No® waterproof and breathable barrier and Deluge® DWR (durable water repellent). The lightweight and compressible insulation is water and wind resistant, while the removable hood is drawstring adjustable to help keep the snow out. The articulated arms improve mobility and feature "grow-fit" sleeves, adding two inches in length.

Fight the cold bug with the Patagonia Kids Kids' Woolly Hat. This super cute beanie will keep your little one’s head and ears warm this season with style. The soft wool inside and out and fun pom pom on top make the Woolly Hat a must-have accessory for playing outside this Winter. Don’t forget the gloves. The Patagonia Kids Synch Gloves are 100% polyester double-faced fleece that is very soft with tons of grip – great for throwing snowballs at big brothers.

Patagonia’s knowledge of the outdoors is unmatched. Send your kids outside with the confidence of Patagonia’s protection from the elements. Snow doesn’t have to keep you inside. Go play and have fun with the family.
