Trading Places: "West Coast Meets Southern Style"

This internship has gone by so fast! I can’t believe I only have a couple weeks left with the other interns! One of my favorite components of the internship has been the mentor program. A group of three to four interns are assigned to a single mentor, who operates not as a manager or direct report, but as someone to go to with questions about work, Zappos culture, or any other concerns. The mentor also acts as a guide for the intern culture project.

My mentor Thomas has met with me and his other interns weekly to create personal weekly goals, and discuss any concerns with the internship. Although I have never been one to regularly set and update personal goals, I have found that doing so has helped me see my progress.

One of my favorite bonding moments with Thomas happened a couple weeks ago. He and I were talking about men’s style after grabbing some beverages from the ZCafé. Off the cuff, I commented that I thought his style was very “West Coast.” He took offense, and we spent the rest of the day going around asking random Zapponians whether or not he dressed in a “West Coast” fashion.

I myself am from the South, and I consider my style to be rather preppy. So we came up with the idea to switch styles for a day. I would dress like him, and he would dress like me. I didn’t have a lot of West-Coast attire in my wardrobe, so Thomas let me borrow some of his clothes, and I went out and bought the rest. The next day, Thomas dressed as preppy as possible, while I tried to go for the most stereotypical West-Coast outfit. We proceeded to go around the office (once again) and figure out who impersonated the other’s style better. I think it’s pretty clear who won. Hint: it’s the guy wearing the hat and Dickies shorts!

Content Does it Again!

The Content department decided to bring back its long-lost tradition of “Picnic Olympics” this year on Tuesday, April 9th.  What a windy day it turned out to be!  At least I didn’t get slapped in the face by a flying hamburger again this year!

The fun-filled shindig took place at Pecos Legacy Park, where everyone donned their Content t-shirts and creatively decorated themselves in their team colors.

While Dickey’s BBQ set up the catered spread of beef brisket, pulled pork, potato salad, baked beans and other picnic favorites, six teams feverishly scoured the park for scavenger hunt clues.  There was no actual hidden temple, but it was Team 1, the Purple Parrots, who claimed victory in this event.

With bellies too full for any intense physical activity, the next round of competition involved five Minute to Win It-inspired games.  This fast-paced event really had everyone cheering each other on!  From fishing pennies out of pantyhose to stacking dice on Popsicle sticks, the hidden talents of some Content members became all too apparent.  Team 3, Vitamin C-ya, pulled ahead of all others in this round.

No one was safe from humiliation during the final round of competition!  Teams battled it out in several relay race games, which included jumping rope, running like a chicken, hopping like a frog, and more.  Team 4, Cruel and Unusual Content Chaos (AKA: Your Worst Nightmare), took first place.

As you can see, team and family spirit was in full swing at the Spring 2013 Content Picnic Olympics.  Some great prizes were awarded not just to the overall winning teams of the games, but also to these honorable mentions:  Team 5, Green Eggs and BAM!, for best team name and Team 2, Pinky and the Brains, for best use of team color.  A great time was had by all, and hopefully history will repeat itself at Content’s next Picnic Olympics this fall!

Happy Hour with Chinese Laundry & Miss Universe Competition® Contestants

A couple of weeks ago, our friends from Chinese Laundry threw us one of the most memorable Happy Hours to date. As the official sponsor of the Miss Universe Competition® 2012, they brought all of this year’s contestants to tour our headquarters and cut loose with the Zappos Family.

There was karaoke, drinks, spin-the-wheel for prizes, and a photo booth to show off all of our goofy sides! And of course, it wouldn't be a Zappos party without some impromptu dancing! Everyone had a blast, including the lovely contestants!

Be sure to watch the Miss Universe Competition® LIVE from Las Vegas tonight on NBC, 8/7 Central.

Winning Big with Zappos Vendors

Winning on the Race!In typical zashion, members of both the Zappos Kentucky and Las Vegas families were on hand on May 12th to applaud our amazing vendors. In the morning, the visitors had the opportunity to tour the one-of-a-kind Fulfillment Center in Shepherdsville, KY, observing how the Zappos machine works from the inside, out.  Then, just as the sun rose to its peak in the afternoon sky, Zappos turned up the heat!

No trip to Kentucky is complete without a journey to historic Churchill Downs. After loading up the buses, our favorite shoe, apparel, and houseware reps headed to the site of the “best two minutes in sports”.  Never missing a chance to show why Zappos is one of Fortune 100’s Best Places to Work, 10 tables were also reserved for employees who assisted with the 2011 Vendor Fair in the high-class Skye Terrace, complete with a full buffet and open bar.  Tony Heish and company sponsored the sixth race of the day and celebrated up on Millionaires Row and in the Winner’s Circle.

With the Delivering Happiness bus parked out front, the mood in Suite 5 was elated and excited, enjoying time away from packaging and prepping in style. While not everyone won money at the races, the entire afternoon received an awesome review.

The night continued on to Fourth Street Live in Downtown Louisville, where the pubs weren’t the only thing crawling…

The Amazing Easter Hunt

culture, easter, fun and weird, fun and weirdness, games, minute to win it, the amazing race, zappos culture, zappos family, Zappos fun, zappos hq

Here at the Zappos HQ, we love to celebrate every holiday. Actually, we love to celebrate just about everything, and always manage to find reasons for celebrations. Since Easter is coming up this weekend, we held an Amazing Easter Hunt yesterday. What is the Amazing Easter Hunt you ask? It’s a crazy combo of Minute To Win It, The Amazing Race and a good old-fashioned Easter Egg Hunt.

Each team had to complete Minute To Win It-style games such as strapping on a belt with a tissue box filled with ping pong balls and shaking and shimmying like mad in order to get all the balls out of the box as fast as possible.

After teams were eliminated, three teams were left standing to do the actual Easter Egg Hunt. The premise was like The Amazing Race in that they had to complete challenges to get clues about where the eggs are hidden. In the end, Team "Egg-cellence" (Corey B., Jesse C. and Maureen S.) reigned supreme and took home 1st place.
