Zappos iOS 2.9 0 App Release

Today, Zappos is happy to release the latest update to its Zappos app for iOS (iPhone®, iPad® and iPod®): Version 2.9.0, which offers some exciting improvements to the Zappos shopping experience on a phone or tablet.

Customer Account Improvements

We’ve continued to renovate our user account information and the latest update increases a user’s control of his or her account.

In addition to being able to modify saved billing information and saved shipping address information, users can also modify their account password. We’ve also added the ability to set a primary billing information and shipping address for faster checkout!

Once a primary billing and address are set and verified, Zappos shoppers can use “EXPRESS” checkout to skip the selection process and go directly to the “Submit My Order” screen. If the purchase is a gift, users will see another added bonus: we’ve added personalized gift messages as an option in the checkout process.

We’ve always considered the detailed order history within Zappos mobile apps a key differentiator. The “My Account” section features each shopper’s entire Zappos purchase history, accurate order status information, visual live order tracking and access to our easy return process.

We put a cherry on top with 2.9.0 by adding product images to order numbers on the order history page so it’s easy to tell which order is which. Tap the product image to see the other items in the order.

We’ve also made the checkout experience more intuitive by detecting out-of-stock items in the shopping cart before the checkout process begins. If the item requested is out of stock, shoppers can move that item to their favorites and we’ll notify them with a push notification when it’s back in stock.

Browsing and Searching for Products

One of the best parts of the Zappos app is the fun and ease of finding the products you’re looking for. We’ve already got streamlined category navigation, powerful search as well as easy access to recent and saved searches right from the search entry field.

With this update, we’ve taken our powerful sort and filter options a step further: users can now exclude brands, specific styles, colors (and more!) they don’t want to see results for. For example, if you want to see every new blouse but hate the colors red and orange, you can just filter red and orange items out. So much easier than selecting every single color other than red or orange, right?

Cats, Dogs, Robots and Zappos Flair

Zappos isn’t just known for its unmatched customer service, wide catalogue selection, detailed product information and high definition images and videos. It’s also the market leader in quirkiness! This undervalued metric is something Zappos prides itself on and we’ve taken our “quirks” a step further with the ability for the user to choose their own “flair”!

An early Zappos feature, putting an item in a cart triggered a cat animation on the screen. Now, users can choose between cats, dogs and robots or a combination of them to add their own flair!  For added fun, try shaking your iPad while on the Zappos App home screen, and see what happens next!

Shop From Your iPhone and iPad

That's right. Thanks to the combined efforts of multiple departments within Zappos tech, users of the Apple iPad and iPhone can shop at Zappos.com anytime and from anywhere.

To get started a customer just needs to download the fee app from the iTunes app store and start shopping. The customer will see the familiar brand styling and identical catalogue to our "regular" site. In addition, the mobile application adds some extra functionality not found on the website. For example, users on the mobile app can simply tap, pinch and swipe to easily navigate the storefront. And thanks to the great work of our API team, customers can shop with confidence, as the app even offers secure transactions.

So far, iTunes has served up 70,000 downloads of the free Zappos Mobile App, we've had a near-constant 4 star rating, and we were even highlighted in Apple's featured shopping Apps section!

Each app required close to 10 weeks to complete. Development required the bulk of the time at close to 6 weeks. This is a remarkably efficient turnaround based on the complexity of the application and relative unfamiliarity tech had with the format. The most interesting hurdle that they had to overcome was that the team couldn't view the complete app until the very end when all the various components are included. At that point, it was a mad dash to put the final touches on the app, get all the QA done, and release the app to the public.

The team that brought Zappos.com to our adoring and tech savvy public is comprised of all-stars from various departments. The UX team designed the customer-friendly look and feel. The DEV team provided the underlying code to support this highly-functional app while the QA team kept everyone honest by making sure no "bugs' made it to the final app. Special thanks also to the CLT for fielding customer support inquiries and keeping our customers happy. Finally, the Product/Program Management team wrangled all of these teams into one cohesive, efficient and creative whole. We've all been busy working on various projects, and it's been humbling to see these teams come together to take advantage of this evolving segment of the market.

Next up, will be the development of apps for the Android and Chrome OS. Like all projects that we get passionate about, the team will also constantly tweak, update and improve the current apps. Feel free to stop by and say hi to the team! They're sequestered in the Penn and Teller room in building 2290!

How to Scan QR Codes

iphone,applications,android,blackberry,QR codes,qr code,scanning qr codes,qr code reader,qr code scanner,smartphone applications,zappos qr codes,how to scan a qr code,

How many times have you come across these pixilated squares? On the pages of your favorite magazines, on your shopping bags, even on your cereal box, QR codes seem to be everywhere these days!

QR codes have quickly replaced URLs as a quick and easy way to get to a web page, video or  other digital experiences, right on your smartphone.

Want to get started on the QR code scanning craze? First, you need to install a QR code reader on your phone. There are lots of apps to choose from for every type of mobile device. Try NeoReader for the iPhone®, Barcode Scanner for Android® phones, and ScanLife for Blackberry®, iPhone or Android.

Once your app is installed, all you need to do to scan a QR code is to take a photo of the code. Then, depending on the app you have, it will ask you if you want to visit the target, or perform the action. The QR code will either take you to a website, show a video, send an SMS message, add the company to your contacts, follow them on Twitter, or add them as a Facebook friend.

That’s all there is to it! Happy scanning!

Joon Fools Day!!

It’s official. June 30th has been designated Joon Fools Day by the Photo Department. In a remarkable attempt to pull the greatest prank on our resident prankster, the entire team got together and, with some help from HR and some well placed articles by CNN, we convinced our resident prankster and techie nerd that Zappos had bought up all of the newly released iPhones and passed them out to team members at our All Hands Meeting a couple of weeks ago. One that Joon didn’t attend.

We kept the joke going all day with congratulations e-mails from HR and websites mentioning that the state of Kentucky was completely sold out. Joon was so eaten up that he missed out that by lunchtime he was begging those that had received one to either let him buy theirs at deep discounts or trading 6 hours of hard labor for one.

In the end we rounded up the team and pretended to present a new phone to Joon. Little did he know it was an iPhone box filled with images of middle fingers- a little joke that Joon likes to do with Post-it notes throughout the department.

Check out how excited he is in the video- he knows that something exciting is going on but he has no idea what lies in store. Thanks for being such a good sport Joon, and remember that you always get what you dish out tenfold!!

Will it Blend an iPhone?

It all started when Mary and George from Blendtec were touring around the Zappos HQ in Vegas when Loren from the Pipeline team told the how much of a fan he is of Blendtec blenders. A week later Loren received a Blendtec blender in the mail and it didn’t take the Pipeline team too long to put it to the test.

List of things that the Blendtec blender can blend:

  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Teddy Bears

But they never imagined that an iPhone would ever be added to their list until Thursday, April 22, a day that will go down in history as the day Eric from ChoiceStream blended his iPhone. That’s right, a group of ChoiceStreamers were just touring around Zappos when they spotted out mighty Blendtec blender. Eric said, “I’ve heard that these things can blend iPhones.” Our Pipeline team said without a doubt in their minds “why, yes it can!” So, for the sake of science, fame and of course for pure entertainment, Eric A. sacrificed his personal iPhone to the Blendtec blender.

Thank you Mary and George and everyone from Blendtec for giving us this amazing blender, and a big hoorah to Eric for putting this blender to the ultimate test.

DEAR READER:

Dear Reader, last week we asked you to illuminate us on your
favorite shoe style and why. This week we are delving into the what
the contents of your handbag says about you.

So tell us what’s in your handbag and what it says about you.

What do the contents of Couture’s handbag say about us? We travel often and like to capture the little moments (hence the notebook and camera), we are always prepared for inclimate weather conditions (the wrap); we understand the essentials – make-up for touch ups, car keys (how else would be get to and from), hair spray for the fly-aways; that we love a little bit of technology – yes the latest iPhone (feel free to wretch now); we like to be seen but more importantly, to see (eyeglasses), smelling good is always important (thank goodness for pocket-sized products); and finally that we love a little bit of couture, hence the handbag (Gucci) itself and the card case (Goyard).
