I never understood the concept of “shoulder season” until I started working out. You see, when you work out you spend certain days focusing on certain things. If you see a friend walking funny, and you know they spend a lot of time in the gym, just assume it’s leg day — or, more accurately, you’re seeing them after their leg day workout. Back and arms day usually leaves me feeling like my arms are going to float away for the rest of the day. But shoulders … they are a different beast altogether, in both workouts and in seasons.
In the spring, weather in the high 50s and 60s makes us put our cold weather gear away. When it hits autumn we dive into our closets and pull out soft and warm pieces like a child with their blanket, wanting nothing more than to feel warm again (even when a few short weeks ago we were lamenting the heat and humidity).
Shoulder season pieces are fast becoming my favorite, especially in the fall. It marks a time that much closer to the end of a good year, and it brings to mind softer and cozier times. I love fall and winter fires in the fireplace or the pit outside, making s’mores and telling stories with my boys. I grew up in Southwestern Pennsylvania where fall meant bonfires and Friday night football under the lights, and there was nothing more exciting than pulling out your coat for a cool night with friends.
You can never go wrong with a great trench or anorak. Simple lines and timeless shapes can keep you warm for any occasion and can be dressed up or down as needed.
Whatever the Weather
If you’re lucky enough to live in a place where there is rain in the fall, or simply just a low dip, a fuzzy fleece or convertible rain jacket is essential. I especially love how Columbia’s fleece seems to just get softer and softer with wear, and I love this one a little bit more since Columbia will donate a portion of the sales to breast cancer research.
A Little Unexpected
This fall has some great and unexpected twists when it comes to staying warm. Capes are making a comeback, so every woman can channel her inner superhero while staying warm and having her hands free to pick apples or push swings. Feeling a little more vixen than hero? A girl can never go wrong with a styled moto-inspired jacket.
